And I figured using vanilla SF2 to make a boss version of Gief was already too limiting, but the mystery cancels and some of the frame data still confused me, as in who thought that was a good idea. No wonder he looked so underwhelming. Well, with boss Gief out of the way, it can really only go up from here.
If they wanted to properly pay homage to SF2 Gief, they should have given him quick lariat and Green Hand even though that would be a huge kick in the dick. He has those move in ST.
Its hilarious that a boss meant to be broken as a challenge would probably still only be mid tier if they were actually playable, and even then that's only really because of the health, stun, and frame 1 SPD.
The fact that ultra heavyweight Gief is green, only uses Double Lariat and Spinning Pile driver, and his jabs are really fast, makes me think he is a refference to Hagar. Double Lariat and Pile Drivers are techniques that define Hagar, and hitting the attack button as fast as you can is a MUST on Beat Em Up games. Idea: A Fighting Game Garbage on Zangief in SFV in general. I don't play it myself, but follow the scene, and the amount of stories I heard about him being literally unusable for large swaths of the game's lifespan scares me. It seems like this was far worse at launch but got gradually better.
"It genuinely feels like whoever was working on this character actually fucked up at a couple of points" feels like it sums it everything about SFV Gief as a whole.
"I'm not asking for anything crazy like Green Hand" okay but, Shadow Lady is literally an entirely new character with unique attacks. They could've given boss gief Green Hand.
Thinking about the "mystery cancel" imagine if this gief had a normal that randomly alternated between Gatling Cancels (like anime fighters), super cancels, and special move cancelable kek
As someone without much SFV experience, my friends and I all decided to play it while it was free on PlayStation. Because we were all bad, we actually banned Zangief just for the down neutral leg sweep because it’s impossible to play against when you’re all bad at the game
I want to explain something related to Mystery Cancel. So in programming, let's say you have a bunch of states that you want to handle for a given object, but you don't want to create whole new data structures for those states. The easiest thing to do is to assign each state a number, then give those states a human-readable name that you type in your code. These are called Enums, or Enumeration. The idea is that you get to write a nice readable `Move.CanCancelInto = CANCELTYPES.SuperCancellable` in your code, and when it gets compiled it becomes a very well optimized `Move.CanCancelInto = 2` in the actual program. So for Mystery Cancel to exist, either: 1) Mystery Cancel used to be an actual feature, and they decided against it before the game launched so it's just not a thing anymore OR 2) SOMEONE PURPOSEFULLY WROTE `Move.CanCancelInto = 4` FOR SOME REASON. 1 I can forgive. 2 is probably indicative of spaghetti code. This also means that we will never know what Mystery Cancel is without asking a developer.
You should do one on Leo in Capcom Fighting Evolution. He has decent reach on a lot of his normals, a SPD special, two okay specials for ending combos*, a command grab super, and an okay 'multi-hit' super. There's just one itty bitty glaring problem with his kit, and i'll let you find that out on your own.
Figure I will throw this in, cause this is kinda my wheel house. I think you are forgetting that this is a BOSS character, as in an AI will control it. And when you think about it in this context, some things line up. For instance, why do all of the SPD's have different ranges and do different damage? Its so the AI can go easy on you, for instance, if you are about to die, it might do the light one, so you get one last chance to clinch a win. This is actually pretty common in enemy AI design. I don't know if they actually designed the AI with these things in mind. But rarely do game designers put something there "just because." There is almost always a reason. But yeah, the way you design an NPC and PC are completely different.
Oh boy another boss character! I wish fighting games had the boss character fully playable at either full power or near full power. Like Master Ryu but you can counter hit him.
The couching MK thing reminds me of Ken’s Thunder Kick (f.HK overhead) in SF4: It’s 0 on block and -1 on hit. And because characters like Geif and Akuma have 1 frame supers it’s better for them to get hit by it on purpose so they get a guaranteed punish, rather than block it and be neutral haha.

@@WaluTime makoto is definitely a grappler. Her entire gameplay revolves around grab 50/50 vortexing you over and over until you're dead
@@AdamSmasherReal I disagree. The only reason her grab is a used as it is is because how it enables her more powerful moves, whereas traditional grapplers do their main damage solely off of a grab
@@danknecoarc7174 >whereas traditional grapplers do their main damage solely off of a grab
that's literally what she does, except instead of raw grab damage her grab leads into a combo. her main goal is still to grab you.
"so I'm talking about a character nobody asked for" this is the energy I want to see.
dude, i love these longer fighting game garbage/gold/glance videos, that one you did about necro was your best yet, and i dont even play third strike, literally ever. not only did it feel very in-depth, but i (and probably many others too) like videos with plenty of run time to sink my chompers into. keep up the good work dude, this series is seriously one of my favorites on all of youtube, many thanks for all the hours and hard work you put into these for our enjoyment.
I FUCKING LOVE OBSCURE SHIT UPLOADED BY BIG YELLOW, I LOVE IT WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT TO
this is a 30 minute video
about a game i don't know anything about
in a genre i don't play
about the mechanics and viability of a character
that you can't even play as so it doesn't matter
in other words, this is exactly my kind of content; good shit
We are one step closer to unfolding Gief's mystery cancel into Cambodian death combo
19:33 "The meterless damage is actually pretty amazing." Lol, I guess you're right. I'mma start saying that when playing world warrior.
Bro tried to cancel into Drive Rush but he was too ahead of his time.
"1000-Ten Hundred stun" That's a good number.
I'm good at numbers sometimes
Though still tanky, I am genuinely shocked boss Gief isn't tankier than Master Ryu.
@@robertgeorge4602 I'd even settle for a Final Atomic Buster. Won't fix his other problems, but at least his super would look cool.
Imagine Boss Zangief had a V-Trigger where it does Street Fighter 2 Levels of damage for 1-2 throws
Its hilarious that a boss meant to be broken as a challenge would probably still only be mid tier if they were actually playable, and even then that's only really because of the health, stun, and frame 1 SPD.
Should've given him an EX Tundra Storm
7:56 "It's like if someone threw up on the carpet, and called it a reference of what they last ate."
Solid quote.
“I haven’t played online in a while, so giving luke a concussion isn’t really doing it for me like it usually would”
Zangiefs mystery cancel is clearly meant for green hand.
I wonder if the "fourth option" was "the move cancelable into anything, but at the spend of some HP"
"mistery cancel" sounds like some melty blood shit lmao
There's something with the SF5 devs and this big wrestling guy
I can't get around what it is, but it genuinly fascinates me
The throwing up on the carpet line was absolute peak.
"Like if you threw up on the carpet then called it a reference to what you just ate"
Boss Gief was designed by a cat confirmed
Boss Gief can cancel some of his moves into non-existent Drive Rush.
Hey,uh..
Just wanted to say that I haven't been doing well lately, and I really appreciate your work.
Your vids have gotten me through some really,REALLY bad times, and I wanna say thank you.
I feel safe when I'm in this channel, like I can really feel the love and dedication put into each of your videos.
So thank you for pretty much keeping me alive for the past 2 years😅
Really hope that everything gets better for you, thank you so much tho 🙏
@@BigYellowSilly Always welcome!!👌
I don't even like fighting games but now I've formed a UA-cam Certified Parasocial Relationship with you and I love watching these vids
His heavy punch and sweep are cancellable into the home screen so you can stop playing this character
doesn't do much for him but it's great for me
So Boss Zangief is basically Street Fighter 2 World Warrior Zangief. He is THIS UNBALANCED.
What the mystery cancel probably was: They probably gave him Banishing Flat and wanted these moves to only cancel into that
What I'm choosing to believe: Jump cancelling Zangief
i personally wondered about the details of boss zangief in sf5, so this is much appreciated thank u. he seemed like a weird boss!
I haven't played street fighter since USF4 but this video was so fun.
Me whose never played street fighter v and doesn't even really like street fighter: oh nice, big yellow dropped a new street fighter vid
I Really Hope Zangief Gets Much Better Treatment In Street Fighter 6.
He deserves it ong
@@BigYellowSilly I hope he gets a Green hand super, like custom combo in alpha.
Like,he does like 4 green hands, then he does one of them big ol' double izuna drops like in Usf4
I haven't really enjoyed any grapplers aside fron Ultra Hakan,Ultra Hugo and 3s Hugo.
A dream list for Sf6 for me would be like...
Q, C.Viper, Dudley,Hakan,Hugo,Remy
Sean,Twelve,and T.Hawk.
Also Abel and Alex because gay.
@@bageltime8983 remy lmao
Remy needs to be actually usable of he does get added. The double sweep cHK, charge on all of his skills, and the *B L U E N O C T U R N E* he definitely needs a buff if he's added
Narrator: Zangief did not get much better treatment in Street Fighter 6
I didn't even know this character existed... But I've had a lot of time off and on with the game so I don't know/remember all the boss characters. But once again, a really interesting video.
13:50 Me: Can they cancel into the super he doesn't have
Big Yellow: It's not that they can cancel into super
Get out of my head!
We need to start using "mystery-cancelleable" as a fg term
This is really interesting, they could have just copied and pasted like they did with the second boss Zangief but no they did all these weird extra changes
Have you looked into boss characters from other games? KoF XV has a boss version of Omega Rugal with an exclusive super move, not sure if he has any other weird properties though, other than not being able to regenerate health for some reason
Mystery Cancel and Hypothetical Cancel are my new favorite terms.
Idea: A Fighting Game Garbage on Zangief in SFV in general.
I don't play it myself, but follow the scene, and the amount of stories I heard about him being literally unusable for large swaths of the game's lifespan scares me. It seems like this was far worse at launch but got gradually better.
Welcome back buddy!
Ngl zangief's old sweep is satisfying when it YOU'RE hitting it but dealing with it succkssss
Geif out here with the unknowable cancels and one can only be done on block
"It genuinely feels like whoever was working on this character actually fucked up at a couple of points" feels like it sums it everything about SFV Gief as a whole.
Yay, the boss character i was waiting you to talk
"I'm not asking for anything crazy like Green Hand"
okay but, Shadow Lady is literally an entirely new character with unique attacks. They could've given boss gief Green Hand.
Thinking about the "mystery cancel" imagine if this gief had a normal that randomly alternated between Gatling Cancels (like anime fighters), super cancels, and special move cancelable kek
Truly blessed day when big yellow video drops 🙏
So for Mystery Cancel to exist, either:
1) Mystery Cancel used to be an actual feature, and they decided against it before the game launched so it's just not a thing anymore
OR
2) SOMEONE PURPOSEFULLY WROTE `Move.CanCancelInto = 4` FOR SOME REASON.
1 I can forgive. 2 is probably indicative of spaghetti code. This also means that we will never know what Mystery Cancel is without asking a developer.
this needs more attention because it makes this _so much funnier_
Def thought it was #2 when it was brought up. Quick & simple way to ship that out if you were told nobody would play this character
Def thought it was #2 when it was brought up. Quick & simple way to ship that out if you were told nobody would play this character
Neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
"Like if someone threw up on the carpet and called it a reference to what they last ate" is probably my favourite quote from your videos
I've never even played Street Fighter but your videos make me want to try it
You should do one on Leo in Capcom Fighting Evolution.
They've been doing my man's bad since Omega SF4, grapple players are in ruins
Small correction for an otherwise great video. SFV gief dash after L SPD is -3 a lot of characters can punish
Ty for that I'm honestly very surprised by that tho cause I don't think I've ever been punished for a cheeky dash after it
Spinning pile driver: the character
At this point, it's all Boss Zangief has. Good tool, but all he has.
When are the devs going to learn that making Zangief out of pure damage and nothing else always makes him bad
“I’m not asking for anything crazy like green hand”
Well I am. And have been for quite some time
Christ Capcom just rename him to fucking Zangrief because you killed him TWICE! In the same game!
Here’s to hoping he’s not shit in SF6
Well, he can't suck if he's not in the game...
Narrator: He was indeed shit in SF6
Oh boy another boss character!
I wish fighting games had the boss character fully playable at either full power or near full power.
Like Master Ryu but you can counter hit him.
Hope you did well in your smash tournament!
7:57 is an excellent line thank you
Ohai bynine
Are you still working on that videogame?
@@Qobp i sure am!
New big yellow video. Awesome dub boss
The couching MK thing reminds me of Ken’s Thunder Kick (f.HK overhead) in SF4:
It’s 0 on block and -1 on hit. And because characters like Geif and Akuma have 1 frame supers it’s better for them to get hit by it on purpose so they get a guaranteed punish, rather than block it and be neutral haha.
Dang this remix of Gief theme go hard, where it from?
This is from the 3DO version of Super Turbo, really good OST in general
@@BigYellowSilly ah i knew there was something i overlooked, yeah 3DO has some great teacks
