I really can’t think of another R&B singer that sang a breathy, rap cadence like this before Mariah Carey. And now this is the only style I hear in mainstream r&b these days.

Is** the gold standard. So many people still study the hell out of her voice and overall work today. And she's the one that the younger generations get compared to the most. Their fan bases try to diss her and say she's no longer great or a skilled vocalist. The reality is that Mariah is their fav's fav and their fav will NEVER reach such levels (strictly speaking music). Also, you can't take away greatness or legendary status, and one must never undermine one of the world's greatest musicians (not just a singer). Her highly acclaimed "Caution" album is up there with the work of the popular girls today but of course, the effects of ageism and lack of label push made it underperform. The fact that she can still explore and transform her sound time and time again proves her greatness.
Aside from her obvious skill in range and technique and feeling, her voice and tone are entirely unique. Some singers sing like other singers, but really no one's voice sounds like hers. Like when you here her it's always unmistakably her and no one else. Even her speaking voice is distinct.
She is Queen I been a Lamb 💯💯 She will always own a special place my heart ❤️ my childhood consists of Mariah’s timeless hits..firsthand from the beginning 🫠
it's crazy, mariah had so many hits, but she should have had even more. it blows my mind that this song didn't go #1, it's an r&b masterpiece. it's right there on the level of say my name and other HUGE r&b hits of the close of the 90s and opening of the 00s. people say mariah didn't take risks but she is such a versatile talent... from classic r&b to modern r&b with hip hop influences to pop ballads to whatever, mariah's voice was able to become the defining sound of more than 2 decades. WOW. you honestly just have to sit in awe.
I agree. I was SO surprised when I found out that this song would have been what some call a "flop" but then when I saw that it wasn't promoted properly, it made complete sense. Such a wasted opportunity.
It didn't go to number 1 because it was limitedly released. Apparently her record label didn't agree with it being a single because they didn't like her hip-hop transition. Mariah has been quoted saying, "I'll always be upset "Breakdown" never got its shot."
Christian M It was because she was starting to loose steam due to the pop craze.Nysnc and Backstreet sound was coming n. You're right, so many of her songs should have went to the top during the Butterfly era including Butterfly. That song and this is song are such gems. It's a shame.
Christian M I don't think it was officially released as a single. Not in the US anyway. It was coupled with the My All single which did go #1 so maybe Breakdown helped with that lol
Sheryl Cares Most definitely. One of my favorite songs and collaborations Mariah did with one of my most favorite Hip Hop Groups. #TimelessClassic 😍😍😍😍😍💖💕👑👑👑🎵🎶🎼🎤
"So what do you do when somebody you're so devoted to suddenly stops loving you?" Singing in two different octaves is something I will forever love in this song!
This has to be the best hip-hop + pop collaboration of all time. Everybody since Mariah has tried to replicate, but they haven’t even come close. Mariah’s artistic inclinations are unmatched. Those melodies.
She could have been an English teacher if she didn't become an artist. Her songs are so well written. This entire album was EPIC!!! I NEED A TIME MACHINE!
Definitely a throwback for me during my high school days. When this was released not too much promotion for it was done for this song due to Mariah's breakup with Sony Music. Love what Krazyie Bone had to say about Mariah when they collaborated on this song. Krayzie Bone: “We got to the studio and you know how people say they laid it out on a silver platter… She literally had a silver platter with Hennessy and marijuana for us. So we were like ‘Ah sh-t. Ah man. Mariah cool as hell.’ So we are so excited. We feeling the atmosphere now. We meet Stevie J., Puff even stopped by for a minute. So we indulged on the Hennessey and marijuana and then we actually passed out in the studio. And she came in and asked our manager ‘Is this normal?’ And he was like, ‘Yea, yea they’ll be up in a minute. Trust me.’ So he came and woke us up. And we woke right up, she played the beat for us and as soon as she played it, we were like ‘Oh this is our lane right here. Like, this is perfect for us.’So me and Wish [Bone] just got to collabing… That was one of our first big collaborations, so we were like, ‘What if she give us some kind of beat we can’t rap to?’ We were shocked that she had so much knowledge of who we were. She was like, ‘I had to meet the guys who were blocking me on the charts.’ She was very laidback and like one of the homies.” MC definitely a G.O.A.T and trailblazer for crossing over genres.
I truly think this song is one of the best songs of all time. It’s not until you’re about 30 yo tho that you REALLY understand the magnitude of these lyrics.

The lyrics to "Breakdown" alone demonstrates why Mariah Carey's immense songwriting skills are being recognized by the Songwriters Hall of Fame! To break it down in songwriting credits, Mariah wrote or co-wrote 18 of her 19 No. 1 hits that have landed on the Billboard Hot 100.
I always loved song back then, maybe after a few years the song came out. I read the lyrics word for word and was amazed. I felted much deeply of the song afterward, MASTERPIECE.

It's why she's the goat and people that don't know the story behind her history don't understand why people feel that way. She had someone trying to get everyone to kill her career and she came out on top anyways. A rare story in high powered industry.
One of the best collabs ever 2024 still here 💯🥰
Her Butterfly era songs were the most popular here in the Philippines. This may be underrated in other countries, but it was a big hit here.
Sometimes I wish I was from Philippines... In my country, they only know All I Want for Christmas 😟
everything Mariah is popular here in the PH... here are the songs from each album that were hits:
MC: Vision of love. love takes time
emotions: emotions. make it happen
music box: hero. without you. anytime u need a friend. dreamlover.
daydream: one sweet day. open arms. forever. fantasy. always be my baby.
butterfly: butterfly. breakdown. my all. whenever u call. honey.
rainbow. heartbreaker. cant take that away. against all odds
glitter: never too far. lead the way.
charmbracelet: my saving grace. through the rain
Emancipation: we belong together. its like that. dont forget about us. mine again. fly like a bird.
e=mc2: bye bye. i stay in love. touch my body. ill be lovin u long time.
memoirs: angels cry. obsessed. up out my face
I find it hard to believe this song could be underrated anywhere. Banger 🔥
Well I'm from America and that was the best thing that ever happened to R&B

@@erikadornelas9873 haha same, i just noticed.
"Timeless" is the equivalent of Mariah Carey's music. Most would even say she was ahead of her time!
I really can’t think of another R&B singer that sang a breathy, rap cadence like this before Mariah Carey. And now this is the only style I hear in mainstream r&b these days.
I never noticed that but that so true though!
She doesn't get enough credit for this!
She is the pioneer! A icon!
She singlehandedly changed remixes and brought rap to the pop charts.
Facts 💯💯
Mariah and Bone Thugs created magic with this record.
Thanks To Stevie J

Stevie J and Puff Daddy or whatever he goes by now lol

This could be a 2020 hit.

It’s still a hit tho🤔
@Kane Cantell you old heads so annoying 💀
@Kane Cantell you realize you can listen to more than just one genre/style/era of music at a time right? 😂😭
Mariah's 90s and early 2000s work was the gold standard. No one has replicated her work.
It's virtually impossible...sure there are other artists out there with real talent, but MC is beyond incomparable
Good
She is Queen I been a Lamb 💯💯 She will always own a special place my heart ❤️ my childhood consists of Mariah’s timeless hits..firsthand from the beginning 🫠
it's crazy, mariah had so many hits, but she should have had even more. it blows my mind that this song didn't go #1, it's an r&b masterpiece. it's right there on the level of say my name and other HUGE r&b hits of the close of the 90s and opening of the 00s. people say mariah didn't take risks but she is such a versatile talent... from classic r&b to modern r&b with hip hop influences to pop ballads to whatever, mariah's voice was able to become the defining sound of more than 2 decades. WOW. you honestly just have to sit in awe.
Her ex husband made sure that her success without his direction was very limited....its public knowledge...hence the glitter era...
Christian M I don't think it was officially released as a single. Not in the US anyway. It was coupled with the My All single which did go #1 so maybe Breakdown helped with that lol
Mariah’s voice is ethereal- only angels could compete with her voice. ♥️
One of the most underrated unexposed colabs Mariah did!! 1 of my many favs for sure! ❤

Of course there is another song like this. Check out Krayzie Bone feat. Mariah Carey - I still believe
My mom said she would be happy to have me in the morning when do we need it was not a bad idea to be a little boy

I played this song in my car every single day on repeat for 8 months straight
She could have been an English teacher if she didn't become an artist. Her songs are so well written. This entire album was EPIC!!! I NEED A TIME MACHINE!
You & I both lol.
She was like, ‘I had to meet the guys who were blocking me on the charts.’ She was very laidback and like one of the homies.”
MC definitely a G.O.A.T and trailblazer for crossing over genres.
This time period she broke up with Tommy Mottola. Not the record company. She still released two more albums: #1's & rainbow
they passed out 🤣

The lyrics to "Breakdown" alone demonstrates why Mariah Carey's immense songwriting skills are being recognized by the Songwriters Hall of Fame!
To break it down in songwriting credits, Mariah wrote or co-wrote 18 of her 19 No. 1 hits that have landed on the Billboard Hot 100.
