this song is so excessively romantic it just makes you feel love any time you listen to it. The way she picturef what Derek and her did that night in a song just shows that she is a real artist.
The fact that Mariah was able to convey that moment she shared with Jeter, to us, without us even knowing it really happened and turning the experience into poetry with a melody is so groundbreaking. She is truly a singer-songwriter. The very definition of the word. How many “songwriters” can take a quick moment they shared with someone and turn it into something as beautiful as this. The Roof has always been my favorite song, and now I know why. I felt every thing she was singing about. And her words moved upon me like the rain caressed her that night on the rooftop.
“The Roof” is of course set on a rooftop on a “misty,” “warm November night”; she even mentions that it “wasn’t raining - yet” which foreshadows later events in the (song’s) story. In the first verse, she shares her inner monologue, confessing “my heart was pounding, my inner voice resounding, begging me to turn away but I just had to see your face to feel alive.” Here, she characterizes herself as once again having this intense, sensual yearning for the subject of her desires. Her desires, she so wonderfully describes, had her “twisted in a web” likening her love interest to a spider, thus making herself the entangled prey. There is also a certain sense of taboo to the lyrics of the song, seen by lines such as “my apprehension blew away, I only wanted you to taste my sadness as you kissed me in the dark.” The line not only refers to her apprehension, but also gives a wonderful metaphor of him “tasting” her sadness. Both of which leave the listener with questions: “Why is she so apprehensive? Why is she so sad?” Following the first verse, we meet the first incantation of the chorus in which she reveals that, with this song, she is going “back in time, to relive the splendor” that existed between herself and this mysterious man, “on the roof top that rainy night.” Mariah takes the masterful storytelling up another notch on the second verse, which opens with the cleverly rhymed line, “And so we finished the Moét, started feeling liberated.” Here, she attributes her surrender to him to the effects of a little champagne, yielding liberation. She further addresses the taboo of the encounter and the yearning she felt for him, expressively singing, “I threw caution to the wind and started listening to my longing heart.” Finally, he “softly pressed [his] lips to” hers, which brings light to “feelings [she’d] suppressed for such a long time.” This moment clearly was therapeutic for her, again evidenced by the following lyric: “For a while I forgot the sorrow and the pain and melted with you as we stood there in the rain.” It is remarkable and impressive how Carey is able to weave such intricate meaning and emotion into one line, yet still create rhyme. This, though, is the case for many of the other tracks on Butterfly, “The Roof,” however is one of the best examples. On its bridge, she admits to being in love. In one of the final choruses that follow, she provides some interesting, poignant, and telling ad-libs. Recalling the lyrics of the bridge, she coos, “Last night I had the strangest dream. It was actually quite symbolic. I whispered that I love you very subtly.” Almost unnoticeable, this ad-lib seamlessly intertwines itself into the harmonies and melody of the chorus. This “dream” she references may be the very inspiration behind the song.
How does one of her best music videos only have 10 million views? Her date night look, some of the looks she gives the camera are hauntingly beautiful and iconic.
Elegant and sultry. Mariah's best video! I'm torn between The Roof and Breakdown as my favorite Mariah song! I think Butterfly should be included on any list of best of albums lists
Most people see Mariah only as this powerhouse vocalist who has lost her charm and skills over time. They forget that she's so much more than that. She is an institution. Her lyricical creativity, her music, the legacy that she created will never be matched.
The Internet generation disrespect her big time. The biggest selling female artist of all time; over 200M records sold and that's not online paid for views, thats records sold. 19 billboard numbers 1's; 18 of those she self wrote. Everyone needs to let that sink in for a moment & take their words back. She is without doubt the best female artist of all time. This song is my fav song: it's sheer perfection; lyrically, sonically and aesthetically.
@@jeffjeffjeff2 mine too. It was My All but over the years I've slowly gravitated towards The Roof. My All is still top tier and has been shifted to the 2 slot.
Nobody will ever discredit this woman's gift of talent. Listen to this song at night with earphones w/ no Instagram, Snapchat or Twitter distracting you and just LISTEN to the lyrics.
Can’t believe RollingStones listed both Lana and Taylor (love them both) as the best songwriters, but this masterpiece of lyricism and storytelling exists. The lyrics alone in this song tramples over every song those two have ever written. Mariah is the one and only true songwriter.
rolling stones hates mariah lol they didn't even list Vision of Love as one of the best debut singles (despite being considered the inspiration for artists such as Rihanna, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson to become singers)
Lana and Taylor Swift are kindergarten poetry contest winners compared to Mariah. Zero creativity. Lana has one Schtick she rehashes endlessly and has no musical ability or gift at all. Taylor is literally the epitome of boring and mediocre which is why she’s popular because most people relate to that. Mariah is a musical genius.
@@ragtimegals I like a lot of Lana's songwriting but yeah agree on Taylor being absolutely boring, Mariah is an awesome artist tho and she deserved to be included in the list
True we true fans know she has nothing to prove she slays these no count singers point blank and the period honey (Tamar voice) they better get their lives lol.
“ The Roof” is one of Mariah Carey’s best lyrical compositions. My personal favorite. That being said I believe this did not become a big hit because Mariah was all over the place at one time. Back to back albums, singles, remixes , videos. Over saturation. I believe this is why she received so much public backlash by the time “Glitter” was released. Remember how many remixes and different videos she used to make for 1 song.
It was because her label didn’t like that she was changing her sound to urban and they didn’t promote it.. also, she was going through a divorce from Tommy Mottola, who was head of the label at the time. They also did not help her out with her other album, rainbow because they were upset that she was leaving so they basically tried to sabotage her.
This song is definitely one of the best hip hop song ever hands down the mob deep shook ones remix should of bin the original song and this should of bin the remix
It’s all about finding that one person, who you can create memories and moments of love with, someone who can make you melt and awaken your sensual side 😍❤ someone who you can let your guard down, in front of, and not be ashamed around ❤If you can’t find that person in a marriage, then a date would suffice, because a life without experiencing love isn’t worth it. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
When she was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, she was happier than ANY accolade she’d ever received. She is a poet, poetry, well, that is pure and true spirit.
How can this song still sound amazing even today. This is her best track ever. The R&B vibe on this track is sick. This is the era I loved the most. That feeling when life wasn't stressful and hectic. This song is Mariahs masterpiece.
Sounds amazing even today beacause this track is timeless. In the next 20 years it will still sound as good as today. And I agree this is a masterpiece.
I agree with this i think the butterfly era was the best because she was able to do what she wanted and beimg set free for the first time to show the world who she was through her own way allowed that time to go around and enjoy the whole process. I always find myself thinking about what she felt during this time. I feel this is her best album along with daydream.
Yeah but Kelly Price was indirectly talking shit on social media about Mariah losing her voice after that horrible performance Mariah did a few years ago. The lambs dragged Ms Price as you could imagine. It was hilarious.
The Roof is extremely underrated. If you didn't have The Butterfly CD Or Cassette Or BET in the 90s, Then you would never have known it then or even now.
Not only is this my favorite Mariah Carey song, this is my favorite song in general of all time. Absolutely nothing else I've ever heard beats this. This never ever ever gets old. It is so cleverly written, and it is such a treat. It truly brings me to another world every single time. And then the fact that the video is so perfect as well. This song deserved so much more attention. This should be known by everyone, but in a way I kind of like that it's a hidden gem.
Not only is Mariah the greatest singer of all time, but she is also the best song writer ever. This song's lyrics are genius, as many of her song's lyrics are, but this one is the best.
I've said this and I will say it again, Mariah is so slept on as a songwriter. Carey's command of the English vocabulary is exquisite, which contributes to her brilliant lyricism.
Daydream and Butterfly are two masterpieces of Mariah. The first, is an album in which Mariah slowly begins to break free from the former husband's yoke. She begins to take control of her career by introducing the sounds she likes. A girl who goes slowly becoming a woman. However, Butterfly is her magnum opus, as she said. A wonderful album, intimate. Mariah reached, with Butterfly, the height of her maturity as a songwritter and performer This song is perhaps the best of all Mariah's career. The tone of her voice, the lyrics, the music... This song is one of my favorites.
Lyrically, the best song written by Mariah. This and Underneath the stars prove her skills as a song writer. It's funny because over the last two months I have revisited everything Mariah and instantly realize everything missing in music today. This song has everything missing in music today. The vibe, instant connection, the descriptions and vocal musicianship. The way the the two genre's intertwine, like I couldn't imagine this song without the collaboration, they're just inseparable. A real hidden gem in her catalog. I wonder what everyone else thinks is her best lyrical work? Comment below...
Underneath the Stars is her best-lyrically, IMO She should have went to a more artsier route but commercialism usually triumphs in pop music, but she's definitely one of the most talented female singers ever
THIS song is proof that Mariah is poet extraordinaire. I listen to it every morning on the way to work. I love the lyrics of I Only Wanted, Fourth of July, Alone in Love, Clown, Breakdown, My All (Stay Awhile), Bliss, It's a Wrap, Standing O, Up Out My Face. haha but you know what, all her other songs that I don't mention, there's always a line or two that I love anyway :-)
***** YES!!! I've had the vocabulary conversation a million times with one of my girlfriends who adores Mariah as much I do. She always chooses very evocative and unique words...ones you don't hear in pop music that often. This is one of my favorite songs from her and this era Mimi is my fav
If this album didn't have so many hits already, this one could have definitely been released and been another. It almost sounds like it could be a hit today as well.
"Butterfly" really is such a gem. She has so many iconic eras, but she was especially beautiful in that era. This was the peak of her R&B power, she built off of what she started with "Fantasy", and went from singing ballads to singing more Hip-Hop infused R&B. She was also finally free of her record label/marriage, and she could follow her true passion, and decide her own image. I have so much love for Mariah, it's crazy, I speak like she is my best friend 😅 Every moment of her career has been so iconic, she is ever changing, an incredible vocalist, an immaculate songwriter, stunningly beautiful, and extremely intelligent. All of the positive adjectives. She is the legend of my life, there will never be another Mariah, she is the ONE.
Definitely! Mariah has been able to thrive in every era of her career. It was so iconic to see her break out of her ‘good girl’ image in Butterfly. She’s remained one of music’s greatest legends to this day.
Sony did not release "Butterfly", "The Roof", and "Breakdown" as singles on their own because it did not think that Mariah would accept anything less than a No. 1 single. None of those songs would have gone No. 1 due to lack of airplay (yes, these songs were not promoted to radio to the extent of earlier singles) and due to competition (as in the case of "Butterfly" with "Candle in the Wind 1997"/"Something About the Way You Look Tonight" at No. 1). If Sony really thought that these songs could have gone No. 1, why would they stop them from being fully released? A record label wants a No. 1 single whenever it can get one. As for "Can't Take That Away" and "Crybaby", neither song garnered enough airplay in order to secure a No. 1 position. "Can't Take That Away" is not really pop radio friendly material, at least at the time. "Crybaby", on the other hand, was a strong candidate, in my opinion.
Without Mobb Deep...this song would not exist....js Although MC is a siren....this beat....Gooood Lorrrrd. Between the Two,,, unbeatable....song def. should have charted.
If you need one moment to pinpoint her transition from Pop Star to Legend, it is this very song and video you must be looking for. Unmatched, unforgettable, unreal. Nobody can do Mariah, except for Mariah.
Who writes lyrics like this nowadays? The talent Mariah has is just unparalleled. It cannot be quantified. It just needs to be appreciated. Goodness gracious
"The Roof" (I got you stuck off the realness) (I got you stuck off the realness) It wasn't raining yet But it was definitely a little misty on That warm November night And my heart was pounding My inner voice resounding Begging me to turn away But I just had to see your face To feel alive And then you casually walked in the room And I was twisted in the web Of my desire for you (And I was twisted) My apprehension blew away I only wanted you To taste my sadness As you kissed me in the dark [Chorus:] Every time I feel the need I envision you caressing me And go back in time To relive the splendor of you and I On the rooftop that rainy night And so we finished the Moet And started feeling liberated And I surrendered as you took me In your arms (You took me in your arms) I was so caught up in the moment I couldn't bear to let you go yet So I threw caution to the wind And started listening to my longing heart And then you softly pressed your lips to mine And feelings surfaced I'd suppressed For such a long long time (And I was lifted) And for a while I forgot The sorrow and the pain And melted with you as we stood There in the rain [Chorus] Last night I dreamed that I Whispered the words I love you And touched you so very Subtly as we were kissing goodbye (Pretty baby - How I'm missing you) [Chorus]
Shes literally taking you back in time with this one track. Mariah somehow managed to not only sound beautiful but told a story. Honestly i feel this track every time i play it . its one of my favorites
I love the concept of this song, paralleling being “shook” to engage in criminal activity to engaging in a person whose dangerous but who makes you feel alive. It’s like the good girl whose attracted to a boy from the hood. It’s a phase most girls go through during their teenage years. Truly a beauty and classic modern day tragic story. ❤️
I can't describe the feeling this song gives me everytime I hear it. It's such a personal song. Theres subtle naunces of vulnerability, sadness, daydream, and joy. I honestly would kill to re-live an event, similar to this song and video.

Why is she so sad?”
Following the first verse, we meet the first incantation of the chorus in which she reveals that, with this song, she is going “back in time, to relive the splendor” that existed between herself and this mysterious man, “on the roof top that rainy night.”
Mariah takes the masterful storytelling up another notch on the second verse, which opens with the cleverly rhymed line, “And so we finished the Moét, started feeling liberated.” Here, she attributes her surrender to him to the effects of a little champagne, yielding liberation. She further addresses the taboo of the encounter and the yearning she felt for him, expressively singing, “I threw caution to the wind and started listening to my longing heart.”
Finally, he “softly pressed [his] lips to” hers, which brings light to “feelings [she’d] suppressed for such a long time.” This moment clearly was therapeutic for her, again evidenced by the following lyric: “For a while I forgot the sorrow and the pain and melted with you as we stood there in the rain.” It is remarkable and impressive how Carey is able to weave such intricate meaning and emotion into one line, yet still create rhyme.
This “dream” she references may be the very inspiration behind the song.

Mariah really doesn’t get the recognition she deserves for her songwriting. Obviously her vocals are always 🔥but damn can she write a song.
This!!!! Her songwriting skills are severely underrated
I say this shit all the time. Girl is lethal with an ink pen

That's what I am doing at the moment and it feels like heaven ❤
+Meriem Larbi right ! It's so soothing and relaxing. Listen to her Butterly or Daydream album at times like these, and just have your moment. lol 🙌🏻
I always do that!
you're so wise Mable. Glad you're a lamb.
Mariah just got inducted into Songwriters All of Fame. So, I decided to come remind myself how long overdue she’s deserved her flowers.
Mariah been writing most her songs since she first started. Genius. Gifted. Icon. I know
They chose LANA??? Really?? Her lyrics are like 🤔… Mariah soars above her and Taylor
Poetry in song. The lyrics are so breathtaking. Combined with her voice and this beat, it's a blissful experience.

That's right! Her work is DONE ✅
The Butterfly album is an absolute gem
“ The Roof” is one of Mariah Carey’s best lyrical compositions. My personal favorite. That being said I believe this did not become a big hit because Mariah was all over the place at one time. Back to back albums, singles, remixes , videos. Over saturation. I believe this is why she received so much public backlash by the time “Glitter” was released. Remember how many remixes and different videos she used to make for 1 song.
That's not the reason... there was more going on... This was too urban.
"The Roof" received a limited worldwide release due to Carey's conflict at the time with Sony.
Tommy Motolla was the reason. After she split from him, he went after her via bad promotion and sabotage for her albums.
@@josedescg mesmo sendo sabotada pelo Tommy esse álbum foi um sucesso
Mariah doesn't get much respect when she creates true art. People expect McDonald's style hit single's but she's actually much deeper than that.

If anything, this is the greatest Mariah track of all-time IMO
Then put it on charts, start a butterfly album tracks campaign.
Even Mariah Carey herself thought it was too. Butterfly definitely is her best album by far.
This when music was as fresh as a summer breeze, the elements of R&B and Hip Hop intertwined like a symphony.

SlippingAway
She's certainly one of the best songwriters. Very underrated.
She's eloquent, hip, and master of using words and putting it perfectly into a melody.
"I only wanted you
To taste my sadness
As you kissed me in the dark"
Daydream and Butterfly are two masterpieces of Mariah. The first, is an album in which Mariah slowly begins to break free from the former husband's yoke. She begins to take control of her career by introducing the sounds she likes. A girl who goes slowly becoming a woman. However, Butterfly is her magnum opus, as she said. A wonderful album, intimate. Mariah reached, with Butterfly, the height of her maturity as a songwritter and performer This song is perhaps the best of all Mariah's career. The tone of her voice, the lyrics, the music... This song is one of my favorites.
+Markitikki I agree! This song is her best. Its the epitome of who Mariah is, sexy, vulnerable, intimate, as well as a dash of bad girl. I love it!
Markitikki Me I Am Mariah is another of her masterpieces.
Also Charmbracelet!
Jeo Sioson although i love the album, it has many fillers like Irresistible, You Got Me...
She is a musical genius!!! The way she collaborates with real hip hop is so sick! This is probably my favorite track. It'll FOREVER be a classic

The Roof, Outside, Butterfly, and I wish you well. And last but not least Breakdown.
Underneath the Stars is her best-lyrically, IMO
She should have went to a more artsier route but commercialism usually triumphs in pop music, but she's definitely one of the most talented female singers ever
Honestly bruh, and no offense, I think your opinion is simply a product of aging and your inability to emotionally connect to today's artists.
***** YES!!! I've had the vocabulary conversation a million times with one of my girlfriends who adores Mariah as much I do. She always chooses very evocative and unique words...ones you don't hear in pop music that often. This is one of my favorite songs from her and this era Mimi is my fav

Respect to Mariah for sampling Mobb Deep's shook ones and having them featured on the track. RIP Prodigy 🙏🏽
If this album didn't have so many hits already, this one could have definitely been released and been another. It almost sounds like it could be a hit today as well.
One of her most underrated and beautiful masterpieces of all time.

This song was/is just *too* urban for the pop charts. She's literally singing over a hardcore hip hop beat, with Mobb Deep doing a rap.
The sad thing is most people will not understand how amazing this song is
I do, and I was having a tear jerky moment hearing this song because of how raw it was.
So true 💯. The lyrics are so meaningful and beautiful . She is a great songwriter.. her way of writing is the same as the way she sings just magical

"The Roof"
(I got you stuck off the realness)
(I got you stuck off the realness)
It wasn't raining yet
But it was definitely a little misty on
That warm November night
And my heart was pounding
My inner voice resounding
Begging me to turn away
But I just had to see your face
To feel alive
And then you casually walked in the room
And I was twisted in the web
Of my desire for you
(And I was twisted)
My apprehension blew away
I only wanted you
To taste my sadness
As you kissed me in the dark
[Chorus:]
Every time I feel the need
I envision you caressing me
And go back in time
To relive the splendor of you and I
On the rooftop that rainy night
And so we finished the Moet
And started feeling liberated
And I surrendered as you took me
In your arms
(You took me in your arms)
I was so caught up in the moment
I couldn't bear to let you go yet
So I threw caution to the wind
And started listening to my longing heart
And then you softly pressed your lips to mine
And feelings surfaced I'd suppressed
For such a long long time
(And I was lifted)
And for a while I forgot
The sorrow and the pain
And melted with you as we stood
There in the rain
[Chorus]
Last night I dreamed that I
Whispered the words I love you
And touched you so very
Subtly as we were kissing goodbye
(Pretty baby - How I'm missing you)
[Chorus]
Shes literally taking you back in time with this one track. Mariah somehow managed to not only sound beautiful but told a story. Honestly i feel this track every time i play it . its one of my favorites

I love the concept of this song, paralleling being “shook” to engage in criminal activity to engaging in a person whose dangerous but who makes you feel alive. It’s like the good girl whose attracted to a boy from the hood. It’s a phase most girls go through during their teenage years. Truly a beauty and classic modern day tragic story. ❤️
