Am I the only one that gets choked up at certain lines in this song? It almost always make me gently weep if no one's around. Beautiful short story comes to vivid life in just the opening lines. It's real craftsmanship...
My Grandma used to sing this song to me when i would get out of the bath when i was a kid, like 3 or 4. Im 17 now and i still can remember her singing to me :D
The song purports to be about the 1843 voyage of the British sailing vessel the Franklin. Seeking a Northern Passage route accross Canada the ship became trapped in the ice and all the sailors perished. There is an autobiographical line to the lyric reflecting Taylor's narrow escape from addiction and being restored to bring us decades of beautiful songs "I know what it means to freeze to death, to lose a little life with every breath, to say goodbye to life on Earth, and come around again......" Many of usl can relate to being trapped at least emotionally in a bad place....and getting through.
Is there a better singer/songwriter /performer in the world today .....the answer is NO ...James Taylor a true American hero ......much love to the great man
I saw them in 1994, in Madison WI. Sort of just missed meeting CV. I was a drummer then and didn't really care much about meeting JT--but I was really into CV and Jeff back then. Didn't work out though, but it was a GREAT show. He was playing a 10, 12, 15, 20 DW kit with a 5x14 black beauty snare that was to die for through the PA. What a drummer.
He picks such unique stories to set to music! Of course he is an outstanding musician as so many have extolled...excelled only in his outstanding ability to tell a story.
The 2 albums that James put out in the 90s were just as good as anything he did in his 70s glory days... I'd be honored if some fans of JT's later compositions would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal UA-cam performances of FROZEN MAN and NEVER DIE YOUNG in tribute to the master of lyricism & composition. Live acoustic with no digital enhancements. Peace and stay safe.
Well...I'm still waiting for the movie 'Frozen Man'. We've got the music and a marvelous story lies within the lyrics. anyone got the vision and creativity to collaborate?
ckovertime - Do you have any more videos of James Taylor concert The Road in Knoxville Tn from 1994? I have been searching for years for JT singing Shower The People at this live concert. Your Frozen Man video is the only other one I have ever found.
fuckn no, if your gonna say that, than all music is a rip off of each other, and/ or itself! shah i ike both songs, both have diff feels and energy,,, not even near the same or a "copy" me

Hol’ up! “For just one time I would take the Northwest Passage. To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea”???

Probably my favorite performance of this one, even tops the 1998 VH1 Storytellers. Thanks for uploading if I haven't thanked you already.

The song is inspired by John Torrington of The Franklin Expedition
