I can remember listening to James Taylor on my parent’s 8 track on the way to nursery school. I still love him! 40 years later. Whenever he is in Baltimore I am there.
James Taylor is a national treasure. Hearing Natalie's sweet pure voice on lead on this song is so hugely moving! I am so proud of the Dixie Chicks and their music and their getting together so well with JT.
James Taylor's versions of ALL of his own songs are ALWAYS the best, but he is such a gentleman, and so generous, in singing seconds to his own hit - this song. He goes up in my estimation - if that is possible. Love the man !!!
If you like James singing harmony, take a listen to him and his brother singing City Lights. It's hard to tell who's singing which part since their voices are similar, but who cares, it's beautiful! ua-cam.com/video/vKHznZf2WGI/v-deo.html
How the album this was on changed my whole life in 1970. There is no other LP that blew things apart and put them back together, the way that record did.
When the lists of top ten songwriters are given, James is never on the list. He should be. This song is perfection. Songs like this don't just happen, they're crafted, line by line.

@@galenwarren3579 so sorry it took you so many lines to express your opinion. You are a fallen human being with so much anger and judgement and you know it. But regardless of MY OPINION of you I don't want to waste my time. Natalie's singing this song with James was wonderful and I loved every second of it!!
I was thinking the same thing. I love singing and listening to harmonies. And it blows my mind the one he figured out for this song. Even though he wrote this I can't find any version of his using this harmonic approach . Not only was this beautiful and original it also tells me he was very inspired to play with these young ladies.❤️👍
UA-cam knows if it sends me this in my feed I will watch it. Best version of his. The guitar playing is magnificent. The lead is just perfect. Makes me joyful and sad at the same time.

Pattie McDonald - not quite sure what you're asking, but they played a fantastic gig in New Zealand a year or two ado and were alive, well and harmonious
No one in the public has really heard Natalie Maines real voice. Sony assigned their best Sound Engineer to the group during their run specifically to deal with the inadequacies of her voice. The mixing to improve her voice was described by that Engineer publicly, so Sound Engineers since can deal with the squawking chicken.
@@sune8641 country twang? Yes. That's NOT what Natalie Maines has. She has a bad voice for singing. Even her father, a famous studio owner in Lubbock , never recorded her as a backup singer or as a soloist until he set her up to attend Berkeley School of Music. A recording was required. She registered, but never attended a class because her father called her home and set her up with the original DC's. Sony, who had signed a development contract long before Natalie showed up, was stuck with her. So, they put their best engineer on the job and it took a YEAR to prepare her for the stage. They only really created two original songs. The rest were covers, because it simply wasn't feasible to teach her how to do anything but mimik previous songs and singers.
I would not have thought to put this combination together, but sure glad someone did because apparently it produces solid gold and diamond fairy dust 😲 ✨ just . . bloody . . wow 💫
In response to many earlier anti DC posts, if Natalie's voice was as poor as you suggest, there is just no way James Taylor would have shared the stage with them for a number of songs.
@MusicMadMaurice Of course, 12 years later, if I sang along to anything in the car, he'd say, "Mom! You're embarrassing me!" I'd say, "We're the only ones here!"
I love James Taylor and have given him more positive comments than I can remember. With that said, James was an excellent backup singer for the Dixie Chicks! Remember the Band's song "The night they drove old Dixie down?" In France on March 5th, 2003 as Natalie was introducing the Dixie Chicks' latest single, "Travelin' Soldier," she said, "Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." Country music and mainstream groups around the country turned against the Dixie Chicks and it ultimately ruined their career. It was ugly. "That surely was the night they drove old Dixie down." The "Mob", now hating the French for hosting the Dixie Chicks also put out an edict that French Fries were forever to be called freedom Fries. Many uncomfortable truths are now known about the 2nd invasion of Iraq. Was Natalie wrong in what she said? Great job Natalie, great job Dixie Chicks. You were and I'm sure currently remain a massive inspiration and role models to junior High, high school girls and female college students around the country. Well Done.
I'm not sure their careers were ruined, but since between them they've got 9 kids, they had to slow down a little. When they were here in concert a few years ago, I couldn't get two seats together because the tickets were just about sold out. (I agreed with Natalie."
Right wingers are always pissed off about something or other. With so much religion around, kinda makes a body wonder why so much anger. @@Joannakathryn So did I which back then made the uproar in the states so confusing. I guess that was my first introduction to the MOB mentality that is so destructive currently. I'm glad to hear the storm ultimately passed and they are doing well. Thanks for the update!
Their careers were ruined for exercising their right to free speech. George Bush was a puppet President and he was wrong about Iraq. Either way, the country music establishment decided that they were through. That's a shame, because they were at the top at the time.@@Joannakathryn
I adore the fact that JT is so gracious and appreciative of others singing his songs and always has been.
This never gets old. You can see how much fun they are having doing it
I'll never get tired of this version ❤
I saw them in St Louis together. James lit up like a Christmas tree, performing with the Dixie Chicks. It was precious.
A gracious and kind man.

I'm getting old now with grown children and grandchildren. But long ago, I used to sing this lullaby to my babies.
James is completely content here as the song writer and backup musician for his own song...and Natalie doesn't disappoint...great stuff.
Love this song. I sang this to my grandson James Landon when I babysat him when he was a baby. It was "our" lullabye.
Tear up everytime. Thank you so much!

Music like this is part of what keeps life nice.
I just love this. This is one of the first songs I remember from my childhood (JT"s version, which I adore), and Maines sings it so well.
Natalie along with her fellow Dixie Chicks do a beautiful job here. JT is as generous as ever.
Wow a wonderful thing to have these amazing ladies singing your song, and you are backing them up. It’s amazing!

No one else seems to mention the violin fills, which are so beautifully composed and performed to add to the ambience of the song.
yeah...absolutely...such great stuff.
Marty is a spectacular fiddle player!
Holy fish, this is good! Natalie's approach is lovely and captures the poignant mood of the song.
What an honour to be able to sing this with the master himself.
Increíble que hace 11 años subí este video y sigo recibiendo notificaciones. Gracias a todos. Es muy bella esta versión.
