    I feel like (even as a beginner male ballet dancer) I could NEVER go on stage without sewing my shoes into my tights. My anxiety would be through the roof!

    The placement of my elastics was very important as well as the tightness. I added glue in side my heel to help it stay and would scratch the leathers of my soles as well.

    If they have so many problems with the heels slipping off, why don’t they make the heels bigger?

    • @lapiz_twist6237
      @lapiz_twist6237 4 місяці тому +22

      The goal it to make it look like an extension of the leg, so having it lower allows the pointe to look smoother. Additionally, some companies do make them higher, but it's up to personal preference.

    • @revinaque1342
      @revinaque1342 3 місяці тому +15

      Bigger heels look baggy en pointe, it ruins the line of the leg. Because the foot forms a dramatic arch, it becomes shorter inside the shoe when the foot is en pointe than when it's flat on the ground. So if the heel fits perfectly while the foot is flat, it leaves a sort of baggy protruding pouch in the heel area when the foot is en pointe

    • @cececox6399

      @@revinaque1342but men aren't dancing en pointe in those shoes so that's silly and irrelevant. Also the few men who do dance en pointe wear point shoes. ☠️🤡☠️🤦‍♀️🙅🤷‍♀️🤣

      @@cececox6399 no but they still do a demi pointe which causes the same issue of baggyness in the heel.

    I always rosined the back of my heel when I was dancing because the back of my foot is incredibly narrow. There was no other way for me to keep them on. It made swapping for tap a nightmare though

    What do you do with the dead pointe shoes? Do they just go in the trash or does the company take care of that?

    • @greenbeantm1096
      @greenbeantm1096 3 місяці тому +3

      I don’t know about her/her company specifically, but some dancers/companies sell dead shoes as show souvenirs, sometimes signed sometimes not. If that’s not the case then yes they get thrown away

    Why don't male dancers go on pointe?

    • @onism8906
      @onism8906 4 місяці тому +48

      Because men weigh more and usually men in ballet need muscle so they probably weigh a little more with the muscle and the toes can only take do much weight before it collapses and breaks

    • @S1rT1mmySh33p
      @S1rT1mmySh33p 4 місяці тому +38

      Some do, but as previously said, weight differences and different needs for their different dance styles 😊
      Some do though, as they either break the norm in some way :)

    • @joeyzinx
      @joeyzinx 4 місяці тому +37

      Some do! But most don’t because 1: tradition, 2: because they are expected to be the one supporting the female (en pointe)

    • @jaclynrachellec
      @jaclynrachellec 3 місяці тому +12

      Another reason is that it can be harder for them to find pointe shoes made in their size- due to aforementioned traditions and conventions, and the niche nature of pointe shoes production.

    Would a tube of silicone not work? Like how you make grippy socks from normal socks by putting dots of silicone onto the fabric.

    • @sarahmoi5677
      @sarahmoi5677 3 місяці тому

      You don’t need your flat shoes or pointes to be grippy for every step. You still have a lot of glides and the turns that require the shoes to “slip”. It would be very dangerous to try and turn with a grippy shoe (twisted knee, etc.).
      Plus I guess it would not fit the tradition of uninterrupted lines for the legs to the end of the foot. 🤷‍♀️

    Weird question but during ballet class do you mostly use ballet flats, or point shoes?

    • @sarahspinetta
      @sarahspinetta 3 місяці тому +6

      Not weird at all! In my experience, honestly it depends on the class - sometimes you will warm up or do barre in flats and put on pointe shoes for center/across the floor/ rehearsals. Other classes are more pointe-focused or are dedicated pointe classes, where you will have your pointe shoes on for the entirety of class.

    • @sarahmoi5677
      @sarahmoi5677 3 місяці тому +2

      I would add it depends on your level as well. I did ballet growing up but not as intensive as in a professional school and we always started with barre on flats and only after grands battements we would to center and pointes.

    What does the water do on the bottom of shoe ??

    • @sarahspinetta
      @sarahspinetta 3 місяці тому

      The water softens the leather sole of ballet flats, which makes it have a but more traction or grippy texture. As you dance, the suede leather soles will sort of get polished to a shinier finish from all of the contact with the floor (i.e. tendus & dégagés). It’s an alternative to rosin, which can easily make your shoes too sticky to turn effectively. You can power through it, but it’s a delicate balance with too much rosin. I have never heard of anyone using water on their pointe shoes, though - personally, it is always rosin combined with scratching up the leather sole to create more friction.

      @@onism8906Actually, there are men who do pointe. It's perfectly safe as long as you have a good foundation. It's improper technique that causes injury and not so much weight.

    • @sarahspinetta

      @@onism8906 I would encourage you to talk with your teacher/coach if you’re interested. Many male dancers practice en pointe during class for strengthening and articulation. (And, less frequently but for some characters in certain performances/companies.) The anatomy of the foot is slightly less flexible, which can make finding a shoe that fits your foot properly a challenge. But in addition to a range of colors aside from “ballet pink”, some dancewear companies are offering more inclusive sizes. It takes a lot of specific training for pointe, so I’d definitely encourage you to talk with a trusted professional source to see if you are ready. But go for it if you can!
