Now that one was truly incredible! Just proves you never know with these old cars. Probably better than 90% of people would have taken a look, and said no way it will run. Let alone run that well, surprised even me how smooth it was. This one was a definite win!
I’m watching the dog😊 He walked all the way around the car sniffing everything and then he had to check out the hood when they set it down. I was waiting to see if he would help them push the car.😊
Was sitting here watching and cheering you guys on hoping it would start and viola, it started and actually ran! AMAZING!!!!!!!!! It runs REALLY GOOD as well after 70 years or so!! Congrats you guys!
Matt and Crew, Thank You! Watching your video's completely remove all thoughts of just how bad things are in the World. I don't know how I would manage without all of you. Most likely be in tears all day. God Bless
This was awesome! Loved when the valve came unstuck and she settled into that purr! I'm sure you know this, but these four door convertibles (phaetons?) usually have terrible body sag or break in half due to frame rust. The fact that the doors open and close so easily is a good sign. Go Iron Trap, keep moving forward!
Unbelievable find. Rolls, started, runs, idles. From wide range of compression to clearing a sticky valve, changing a distributor and carburetor, wow. Sounds great, smooth idle. No exhaust carnage footage? Definitely Matt type of work project.
Amazing how well the engine sounds. Your channel content is great! Ran a full race stroked flathead with my first and second cars back in the day when I was a kid.
Sweet find.packing peanuts are the bain of existence. With all of the clean outs you guys do you should look into a dust separator. It will help the vac live longer and be easier to clean. Home Depot has one that goes on top of a 5gallon bucket that I use and it works pretty well . Can't wait to see more on this 39
The red sea parted and the Ford heaven gates opened!!!❤ Matt, this is why I love your channel and your team. You're passion in every area fabrication, artistic eye, business sense, teacher and the list goes on and on, even cleaning 💩 off the front seat!! Another phenomenal success🚀🚀
That's what great about this show...no fancy photographers and studio, Matt & crew just keepin it real in the hood.A plus: a minimum of ads to bust in and annoy
Matt that was a MINIMUM of ads, some shows (NOT YOURS) have one ad every three minutes This is how we know that they sure ain't paying much to Iron Trap Great shows Matt long time fan
This Project and the Forgotten hot rod projects are my favourite. Bringing them back from slumbering for years and giving them a second life (and the process) is really great to watch! I'm not so keen when its a nice example and good parts are removed to "hot rod" it... If its a nice original spec, running car....come on fella's, let somebody enjoy it as is
Someone put a lot of care into that one . That engine ran too smooth for "Just park it because it doesn't run anymore ." Excellent find ! Glad it didn't get scrapped . Unlike most of the cars you get , this one was actually in really good shape . It would not surprise me if it is as solid underneath , as it was in the engine . That was really something to see . Very smooth , & responsive . It will probably run better as you go . Can't wait to see a test drive . Nice find , ITG ! Have a nice Thanksgiving , folks !
My take is that engine is it is near new. It was a lot of fun watching you two get it going. In my part of the Country, Northern BC, anything like that would have had worn out crank bearings and piston rings. (My dad was an auto mechanic, so he knew if a vehicle was running properly.)You would have seen nothing, but blue smoke and a banging rod bearing. I remember, my folks having a 49 Ford convertible. I loved riding, along with my little brother, in the back seat shooting prairie chickens.
The only way I can play with the old jalopies anymore is on this channel with you guys. I can even smell them, the gas and old grease, upholstery. Thank God, no Raccoon poop smell! LOL A big shout out to all you guys and Moon at the Iron Trap Garage!
In the past I did cover the ceiling plastic or metal with 1/2" foam then covered that with white vinyl and used the metal buttons with metal base backings screwed onto the vinyl. Paint the button covers white and pop them onto the base. It gives a tuck and padded look that looks like a million dollars. All of the materials and button covers are available at Joann Fabrics. It doesn't take much time to do with the 2 of you guys doing it, just saying.
Nice job. I always see people put lube in the cylinders when they're working on this stuff and it frees up the valves and certainly helps with compression. Subbed.
It's not a flathead thing. To check compression correctly your air intake is unrestricted. Choke and throttle fully opened when cranking the engine.@@willymccoy3427
I use to have a old 48 ford that had a flat head in it and had the dist. down on the front of the engine... I also worked for a farmer in Oklahoma and he let me drive a 49 or 50 Ford flat head to work at harvest time, the flat head ran great. They are known to vapor lock in the heat. Putting a 8 volt battery in is alot better than the 6 volt, you have to set the regulator for the 8 volt. Unless you want to change everything over to 12 volts, but it wouldn't be origional... Lots of work to do buddy!
Awesome video every time I watch your show it brings me back to my early teen years and my 35 ford Pickup I put Hydraulic brakes on and completely rewired it with help of my neighbor rebuilt a 59AB b;lock and put a merc crank in it offy heads a dual coil distributor a offy twin carb intake with two 97s took the stock fly wheel into shop class in HS cut a lot of weight off the clutch ridge and she did run good I did this between the age of 15 to 17 and never took picture one that wasn't important to me in 1956 now I wish I had I took the Lovered half of my hood off and an it that way ,this is why your program means so much to me this was my youth from 12 to 18 ,I sold the truck before I went into the Air Force and regret that to this day there was no place to store it .
I cannot believe that started. That engine looks like it's been through Godzilla's digestive tract. Rust, grime and worse, yet we all heard that cough and near-start when you first cranked it with the new carburetor. That's the best advertisement for the flathead V8 since 1939.
Morning Matt & Steve! Wow!! Now WHAT do you do next? Great score!! I would put the car together as it is...then put it up for sale..good luck with this one!!
Ha guys im from Canada im 74 yrs old been around those old flat heads all my life ya wana learn something. my dad told me when you got stuck pistons or vallves or anything stuck he said soak it in turpentine its thinner than oil and wd forty and what have you it penetrates into small crevices. Ive had good sucess with it. Incidently those flat heaads were one of the best well balanced engines ever built i just love them so simple and run so smoothe and quiet. No wonder we won the war
What a cool flippin' deal with the convertible! O.M.G! Talk about a blessing in disguise, ha ha😅! I hope that you do some more good for that, basically one of a kind convertible, because she deserves it.... don't ya think?😮Yes! Yes, you do! Ha Haa! Great job, Steve, with the old, squirt some Croil on the valve, trick! Ha!😅 Great show, Matt and Steve! Thanks for the drama and the fun. "IRON TRAP GARAGE DRAMEDY HOUR!" Okay, okay, half hour! 😅😂
The can of Kroil shows me you guys know what the best rust penetrant is. I squirt it in cylinders on engines that have been sitting, Expensive and worth every penny.
Awesome guys! That was my grandfathers dream car. He bought a 40 new, but never ended up with a convertible. Was that car tan or cream originally? Looks like it in the doors. He really wanted to find a Sahara Tan unit to restore, I wish we had!
Finally! Somebody wasn't lying when they said "ran and drove when parked". Who knew you'd find a diamond under all that coin poop?👍🍺
Now that one was truly incredible! Just proves you never know with these old cars. Probably better than 90% of people would have taken a look, and said no way it will run. Let alone run that well, surprised even me how smooth it was. This one was a definite win!

What a sweet heart. She needs to be back on the road.
Matt and Crew, Thank You! Watching your video's completely remove all thoughts of just how bad things are in the World. I don't know how I would manage without all of you. Most likely be in tears all day. God Bless

Hey I have the same tire machine! paid for itself in the first couple months!
I like that Mike is a real hands-on guy. He does it all. And somehow he finds the coolest cars.
Funny watching ya'll doing a compression test with a rubber cover on the carb intake. I could see the vacuum pulling it down.
Yea we missed that doh!
Thanks for watching!
Steve is one of those lifetime people that become never replaceable friends true down to the bone good people😊
Wow amazing that it still runs well! It's definitely a good barn find. And a convertible.
funny how the compression went up once you took the cap off the top of the carb!😉
Just can’t beat old iron

Wrapping the filter element with a couple layers of paper towels will help that problem.
I dream of finding an old sedan from about 1940 to 1950 and bringing her back to life on the road. I’m glad you’re rescuing this old girl back!
Most fun watching a video in a while. Reminded me of some antics by my brother and me years ago! Thanks for the memories 😅
The old stuff Kevin and Mook bring love and life to are worth. Twice the its life time, $ can always help life of a vehicle.
Those old flatheads absolutely amaze me how they start once you get everything right, they are effortless.
You can try to stay positive but it's much easier if those who are in your life would do the same! Re, the commercial.
I would love to see you build this car!
The red sea parted and the Ford heaven gates opened!!!❤
Matt, this is why I love your channel and your team. You're passion in every area fabrication, artistic eye, business sense, teacher and the list goes on and on, even cleaning 💩 off the front seat!! Another phenomenal success🚀🚀
nice ride to give it life again
That's totally awesome find especially that it runs ! Thank you Matt and Steve for sharing this with me !
I remember when Steve no way would be on camera now he’s like awesome on camera. Cool you’re a good guy buddy.
That's what great about this show...no fancy photographers and studio, Matt & crew just keepin it real in the hood.A plus: a minimum of ads to bust in and annoy
Sorry the ads are UA-cam and not us.. but it is the reason you can watch for free and we still make a small amount of money.
Matt that was a MINIMUM of ads, some shows (NOT YOURS) have one ad every three minutes
This is how we know that they sure ain't paying much to Iron Trap
Great shows Matt long time fan
Awesome will it run video!! You were really fortunate on this find and purchase. Love it 😊
Happy for you and I cannot believe it sounds so good. That isn't a flathead like I have every seen before. One less thing to fix.
This Project and the Forgotten hot rod projects are my favourite. Bringing them back from slumbering for years and giving them a second life (and the process) is really great to watch!

awsome guy,s.always glad to see the old one,s come back.make it pretty
Great Video Matt! Looking forward to seeing a series on this car. Hopefully if you don't keep it, it goes to a good home. Cheers
You should christen that car Christine, its got a little bit of red paint and it does spooky stuff, but only when IT wants to!
I have been watching from the beginning, what a great journey! Great content!!

That smile on your face went from esr to ear.. 😄
Matt awesome video! Thanks for sharing! Kevin
Good brainstorming to find the problem and fix it.
The only way I can play with the old jalopies anymore is on this channel with you guys. I can even smell them, the gas and old grease, upholstery. Thank God, no Raccoon poop smell! LOL A big shout out to all you guys and Moon at the Iron Trap Garage!
I really love the videos when you guys work on stuff! Awesome job!
Nice to be back ....quite a performance ...enjoyed it !!!!
Great video. I would think that this was a large victory. You guys are killing it.😊
Matt you smiling see it start.
Sounds really good for sitting 30 + years .
In the past I did cover the ceiling plastic or metal with 1/2" foam then covered that with white vinyl and used the metal buttons with metal base backings screwed onto the vinyl. I did the same thing with my 73 airstream trailer many years ago. Made it look like a million dollars. Joann's is the place.
It's so cool to hear these old cars breathe life again after decades of setting 😊
Nice job. I always see people put lube in the cylinders when they're working on this stuff and it frees up the valves and certainly helps with compression. Subbed.
Cool car ! Love those flatheads .
The auto hobby at it'd finest!
19:06 How do you check compression when the carb is capped off?
I was wondering about that too and just figured it might be a flathead thing.
It's not a flathead thing. To check compression correctly your air intake is unrestricted. Choke and throttle fully opened when cranking the engine.@@willymccoy3427
Wow great video, can't wait to see it drive.
A fantastic find.... Isn't a 4 door convertable called a phaeton? Best of luck with the build, guys. Love the 30's Fords... Go New Zealand....😊
This is a gem of a rig. I'd just assemble it with new interior and I'd bomb in that beauty

Hey Matt and Steve, I thought for sure that you would be pulling it apart. What a win 😂

Looking forward to the next video on this car !

Congratulations! It's Alive!!!!!!!!
I love backyard mechanics especially when good things happen. Great car guys
Love Ya Show...Thanks for all your efforts
Morning Matt & Steve! Wow!! Now WHAT do you do next? Great score!! I would put the car together as it is...then put it up for sale..good luck with this one!!
I would love to see you restore this to a good level.
I didn’t see any smoke 😎👍
That piece of rounded metal you picked up is the cover for the flywheel to keep dirt out.
Love the cool colour scheme. Runs nice too.
Steve has really come into his own, great to see!
WHAT A FIND!!!
There are some cars that just want to be back on the road again!😎
nice job guys!
The hood looks like those old bumper cars. Also, you could probably seal up the back of the hood and row it around a pond and fish lol😮
Ha guys im from Canada im 74 yrs old been around those old flat heads all my life ya wana learn something. my dad told me when you got stuck pistons or vallves or anything stuck he said soak it in turpentine its thinner than oil and wd forty and what have you it penetrates into small crevices. Love to hear them come back to life. Nice job Steve and Matt.
Trashcan 🗑 Approved
What a cool flippin' deal with the convertible! O.M.G!
Talk about a blessing in disguise, ha ha😅!
I hope that you do some more good for that, basically one of a kind convertible, because she deserves it.... don't ya think?😮Yes! Yes, you do! Ha Haa!
Great job, Steve, with the old, squirt some Croil on the valve, trick! Ha!😅
Great show, Matt and Steve!
Thanks for the drama and the fun.
"IRON TRAP GARAGE DRAMEDY HOUR!"
Okay, okay, half hour! 😅😂
Very KOOL Matt and Steve Sounds good
That motor must have been a good runner when parked. I was amazed at how it starter so fast. It sounded good.
That engine sounds great!
Amazing engine!
good job team!
Very interesting 🤔 content guys. Man what a find. Good luck 🤞 with her.
Once you got her running that motor sounds really exceptional.
Nice work gents, she just wanted someone to love her again!👌🏻
Incredible project 😊
awesome video thats badass
Thanks 👍
Good
Sometimes when a car acts like that it is a mouse nest in the exhaust pipe, building back presser. Great sounding now.
The can of Kroil shows me you guys know what the best rust penetrant is. I squirt it in cylinders on engines that have been sitting, Expensive and worth every penny.
Man!! That's awesome I love that car!!!!
Awesome guys! That was my grandfathers dream car. He bought a 40 new, but never ended up with a convertible. Was that car tan or cream originally? Looks like it in the doors. He really wanted to find a Sahara Tan unit to restore, I wish we had!

That's a sweet convertible ❤😊
Great episode!
