Nuking it could warm the surface enough that it could be habitable within the next few hundred years which any fallout would have long since gone
It would only prevent us from exploring it sooner but allow us to possibly send permanent bases in just a few hundred years vs a few thousand

they tried to terraform parts of earth (specifically a new canal near Suez) with nuking as one top idea
it is not that simple. I do believe it is possible though. I think we first have to understand how to control our own environment. We are certainly good at F'ing it up. Lets let the scientists figure out what to do about it. FACTs. yes, we need to stop doing some stuff...and now would be a good idea. but the magic question is ...can we turn things around without doing that? can we simply add something in that counteracts things? This is terraforming. So...maybe we need to accept that even if some countries get on board and try to do things...there will always be idiots that are greedy messing it up. the answer lies in finding a way to combat the damage. What can be done....can be undone. I don't ever take...we can't do that...as an answer in science. We just don't know how to do it yet. No such thing as can't do it.....just too stupid to know how.

Short answer: Mars would no longer just be a wasteland, it would be a radioactive wasteland.
No atmosphere though really, solar winds would help remove most of the immediate rads, might still actually speed the process up tbh, it would begin to more trap radiation as the atmosphere formed and became stronger - but the immediate fall out might not be as bad as people would think, remember mars doesn't share the same atmospheric pressure or magnetic fields as earth

The only way to do it is to increase the mass of Mars to a size which would restart the magma, it’s just too small to have a functioning molten mantle, it’s earth’s mantle which gives us a magnetic field powerful enough to maintain our atmosphere, so even if you created a greenhouse effect, the magnetic field is too weak to shield Mars from solar winds which is why mars has lost its atmosphere and water(if it truly had water)

I was waiting for you to mention the lack of a (significant) magnetic field on Mars. Without one any increase in the atmosphere is simply going to be stripped away by the sun’s solar wind.

There isn't enough volatiles on Mars, including in rocks to make enough atmosphere, so it necessarily entails bringing more in. Some have suggested EM catapults son Callisto, or maybe rotavators to drop packages of ices in.
If you can do that, then you can replenish it over millions of years.
We don't know what lack of magnetic field means on the surface of Mars with atmosphere.

First off, nukes that would be detonated on mars would probably be made so that there's minimal fallout. If not, the fallout of a hydrogen bomb is still much smaller than the fallout of an uranium weapon and barely propagates. Second, to cause a nuclear winter, you need one giant explosion, not many smaller ones, because a giant explosion throws tons and tons of particles inte the higher layer of the atmosphere, where the smallest stay. Smaller explosions, however, when you give the bigger particles enough time to fall down, (like a day) the smaller ones will be launched into one of the lower layers of the atmosphere, so they will fall after a week or so. (Btw, the nuclear fallout would be short, and stay on the poles)

Because making a new one is easier than saving one that eventually will have to die. You do realize we can only push the limits of life so far, so trying to stay on the planet for an upcoming Extinction is not a smart idea, the sun is going to grow, hence earth will get hotter and hotter. We will be long dead way before that. It's not controllable.

The radiation from these bombs, especially air bursting them wouldn’t result in radiation levels that would prohibit human exploration. The surface of Mars is near vacuum due to its super thin atmosphere, so it’s already a radiation soaked world (any human exploration would need heavily shielded habitats or lightly shielded underground shelters) a few nuclear weapons won’t make the radiation situation any worse, and as for dust causing nuclear winter, Mars has entire seasons of planet wide dust storms so again a few nukes won’t add much in the grand scheme
