When you realizes that pitou was crying because by the first time in his life, she was able to see in the king's face an emotion that she doesnt know that Meruem was capable of, and she was feeling an eccho of that emotion. Thats why the king's face was dark, because this emotion couldnt be represented, only felt
@ttt ttt i disagree with that interpretation, pitou's treatment towards the king always showed off great empathy, and that is developed throughout the arc. this scene is supposed to be an example of that.
Andre Moya Indeed, however without his excellent writing it wouldn't be possible. It's a perfect combination of a perfect job by the studio and perfect material for them to adapt.
I love this scene so much, because it perfectly contexualizes the threat. As the viewer, you see the top 2 characters in this world in terms of power, the Chairman of the Hunter Association and the Head of the Zoldyck Family, and the moment King Meruem releases his Nen, they're in *shock* , like their faces are practically saying, "How does a thing like this even fucking exist?" Fucking beautiful.
@@trenageddon6465 i know right, it just means that togashi really did his job with his character and a lot of hxh fans aren't ready for that conversation lol
I think a lot of people are missing that he isnt angry in this scene. He’s feeling despair, his face is blacked out because he lost the only thing that gave his life true meaning. He lost his identity in the shock of the moment. When he sensed Pitou he remembered who he was and for the first time he had to solely rely on Pitous strength. It was the kings first just command, when he looked at Pitou he saw Pitou for all their strengths and Pitous mere presence was enough to rekindle hope in the kings heart. That’s why Pitou cried, even if they didn’t know this logically they could intuit the kings perspective.
amazingly put explanation! i believe the manga expresses his despair more brilliantly, i don't necessarily blame anime only's for interpreting the scene wrong.**
Cristian, Meruem's colony was classified as a B level threat. Meruem himself was not classified but the reason in the end he was not the biggest threat was cuz the Rose has the potential to kill him and any of the ants shown. The calamities will have abilities like Alluka: abilities that with conditions, can kill things easily. That doesn't mean each calamity is pshycially as strong as MEruem
I ADORED THE KING from beginning to end, even prior to his transition into w more human personality, he ALWAYS had a certain way he carried himself, he spoke with such authority, I just remember being absolutely floored every time he opened his mouth.
The greatest arc in anime history with the greatest development of a villain ever created. Everything about this arc was done so well and only got better and better the longer it went on. Seeing Pitou shed tears at being asked a favor. Seeing Meruem gain his composure after a split second of anger mixed with grief. It is all so beautifully done. I am not sure how many more times I will watch this series but every time. I can't wait till I do so again.
@@teobaldolendario8880 No, YOU'RE WRONG! The Chimera Ant Arc is the greatest arc in anime history. I've seen too many people make the same comment over and over in different comment sections across social media. That ONE arc of 61 episodes is what literally made HxH one of the greatest animes of all time. Without it, HxH would just be widely known as an "ok" anime. With it, it turned into an absolute masterpiece. So i would agree with you, but I never will. 1. I have good taste. 2. Two of us would be wrong.
@@Ojas97 never watched dbz but it's probably not a lot worse than Gon's super forced anger arc and the 917 unbearable small villains subplots or the deus ex Machina bomb
That's because they let their guard down due to seeing how meruem was upon seeing a dying komugi. If they were still in battle mode they would've been able to block an attack how else did the chairmen fight him
nicolasa4life what attack ??? the chairman used that statue to keep meruem away from him even with his solid body he easily lost his arm and leg with one swing not to mention how the king was holding back in that fight he could've take his head anytime but he only wanted to know his name
Bedi3 Uchiha true he could have taken their heads but that woud not matter since netero had the bomb inside him so the moment netero got killed. Everyone in the palace would all die. Hunters mission would be accomplished even though a few allies would die. A successful hunt and threat eliminated.
Everyone should remember that you're watching an anime. No matter how good it is, it can never potray every emotion with just gestures. Hence the need for commenter, without it you'll be clueless and be asking questions the whole arc.
jean safiera not to mention they’re trying to be as loyal to the manga as possible. And the latter half of the Chimera Ant arc was filled with walls of text in the manga.
Nah mate, they were fken shook. Also the whole arc was potraying how emotionless Mereum was but on the other hand how much he was understanding about human values and morals, and at that moment it symbolised his love for Komugi and it's pretty easy to ready the emotions he showed
jean safiera Well, i watch videos of people who break down the personas and personalities of all the characters in Hunter x Hunter so when I rewatch these small cut scenes, it becomes even more apparent what they were feeling leading up to this arc. I’m not basing it on one scene but the whole build up.
Again not everyone can understand non spoken language that easily. How can they know how its going to be if they dont even understand whats happening. like the younger audience
I love how you can’t see Meruem’s face, since it’s been blacked out. It conveys deep rage and sadness- that empty blackness of just... nothingness that washes over you when you see someone you love be hurt. Anyone who’s seen a loved one get into an accident, like a car crash, knows what I mean. You aren’t horrified or full of despair right away because it takes a second to sink in, but in that one second all you can feel is void. Togashi is incredibly good at depicting complex emotions like this.

+narutofan9999 No.You're really oversimplifying their entire dynamic. There is really no scene where Pitou gives a shit about their race or thought about Komugi as a threat while there a few where she shows her devotion to the King's wishes contrary to what Pouf was thinking and feeling. Pitou 1000% only cares for the King's wishes. It's why she is designed like a puppet/doll as besides having fun(her cat nature) she is for whatever the King is for. Pouf is the only one who wanted her dead. Youpi didn't care and Pitou is entirely indifferent/empty. They all serve the King but in different ways. Pitou would eradicate their entire race if that is what Mereum asked her to do without a single thought of why or if it's wrong. While Pouf would probably kill himself or circumvent he order in some way. Pouf was the ant side, Pitou was Mereum's entirely selfless servant, and Youpi ironically developed a human like ego&pride as he mastered his power despite being the only Ant to not be part human. Pitou cried because the King said she was counting on her.
narutofan9999 is correct, did you see even a slight hint of happiness in Pitou when she cried? all i saw was hesitation and sadness, your point makes no sense Ryuksgelus
So you completely ignored the narrator too? What hesitation or sadness? She was happy she asked her to help him. The only thing that made her sad was that she saw the King sad. There are tons more scenes of how her personality and beliefs contrast with Pouf's, like when he thought it was a big deal Mereum couldn't beat Komugi while she was just like whatever. She would kill every single CA without batting an eye if that is what Mereum wanted.
@@GrandTickler ryuk was right . Read chaptet 268 the king. Pitou was overwhelmed with joy and started crying. He was entrusted with a task that is so important for the king. Its like getting a promotion.
Alexx's Solo channel *Facts* Which is why I believe Komugi was the true hero of this arc. If she wasn't around then Meruem wouldn't of changed & likely just kill the old men right then & there &, like you said, EVERYBODY would of been killed immediately from the bomb.
I highly suggest wearing headphones while watching this scene so you can fully immerse yourself into every detail, emotion, and all the tension going on here. Meruem's livid nature to the point that he was completely calm, Pitou's outburst of emotion because she realized that Meruem was counting on only her to heal Komugi, Netero and Zeno realizing twice in a second that they were completely ill-prepared for this battle, the humanity in Meruem caressing Kumogi's lifeless body, THE NARRATOR, etc. This is one of the best scenes in the series. Hell, one of the best scenes in anime history.
Netero prepared for the Zero Hand which meant containing all his life force into a single burst of attack, he wasn’t ill-prepared and neither is Zeno, they were just taken a back seeing a supposed ruthless ant king showing a gesture of humanity.
Meruem and Komugi storyline was astonishingly beautiful. The King of Ants gaining his humanity and Gon losing his. And the way it was executed, the writing was all simply brilliant. Not to mention that soundtrack!! So damn good especially at that moment when Pitou cries. The character development in this arc went craaazy.
This is the best portrayal of silent anger can be more terrifying than any outburst of rage. Meruem's aura was so intense that it stopped time and gave two of the most experienced nen users in HxH the chills.
If someone you revered as a god asked for your help and said “I’m counting on you”, you’d probably feel more appreciated and worthy than ever in your life. Also, being able to help your beloved in their darkest hour brings a sense of meaning.
That's his way of crying in painful sorrow. He's is built by Nen power and nothing more but there's also compassion within him that made him human just like us.
Man this arc was crazy. Watching Gon turn into something unrecognizable, getting to see Netero's old badass self unleash his powers, and of course Meruem caring about something other than himself.
More accurately she cried because the king asked her out of dire and honest need, he depended on her in getting this done and that meant the world for her.
I really love this arc. It shows both the chimera ants character development and the viewers too. The King is so charismatic that you eventually would root for him.
Marco Presti bro that show and the original are deep asf. Two brothers risking it all to get their bodies back, while fighting the very monsters they themselves and mankind created all while learning the harsh reality of war, sacrifice, and love. That anime is literally in the top 5 easily for both action as well as story. But everyone is entitled to their opinion
This anime is so damn deep!!! They weren't staring at him because of his immense power, but they couldn't understand his behavior toward Komugi. For Pitou she is like why does he even care about a mere human who's supposed to be food, and for Netero and Zeno they expected a monster at any level of the term, without pity or mercy .. I will even go far, While Meruem was turning more human by the "almost" Loss of soemone, Gon turned to darkness and revenge for the same reason .. Two opposite sides of Characters that never met!
Meruem is one of the best villain with a short arc but with the most character development of all time better than almost any popular anime character well known out there. Can’t name anyone with a better development than he can in such a short amount of time from a god to a human.
This is a good depiction of the emotion in this scene, it's insescribable. A faceless Meruem, The King, The greatest, holding what he holds dear to him most, asking someone for help, with pure rage pouring out, containing it despite wanting to let it out, holding it in out of growth of character. I loved this scene on my watch through of HxH, absolutely amazing it was reminiscent of a moment with a drunken family member of mine one night, although circumstances weren't the same as in asking for help, but holding in the unbridled rage to instead keep calm and stay composed. I only saw the emotion and can barely tell a face, which I personally think is what this scene portrays as Meruem is clearly feeling distraught and as Pitou is face to face with Meruem I feel it's safe to say Pitou wasn't the coldhearted and sturdy as steel person they were when they were born as Pitou could've moved quickly and not cared much for the emotions of the King but now Pitou is clearly shaken and takes care of the lowly human under true respect for the King. 10/10 scene in my standards
The most important part of this scene is that were it not for his one and only concern being Komugi's safety. Both of those old men, master nen users, would be dead in an instant.
This scene just amazingly shows how Mereum’s wrath is honestly terrifying, but since Mereum is slowly gaining the thoughts and morals of humans, he controls this wrath as if it was a calm but powerful wave.
ya know, chimera ant arc has one if the best story ever in anime. its not just about powers and shit. theres actually values and emotion involved that makes this arc really beautiful. i love it.
Pitou cries because she's EVOLVED (emotionally) which is the revealed theme of this arc... the 'animals' becoming 'human'. ==> All of the servants emotionally 'evolve' like this, as the other two do when they save the King's life and become like family to him by nourishing him & being thanked by him. For Pitou this is the 1st time he's expressed the King's "relying" upon her almost as a friend... she's crying because she's realised her relationship is taking on something greater than a mere ant-servant. They all evolve in this arc & the King & servants even talk about this fact.
meruem was my favorite character from the moment he whipped peggy’s head out of existence to his final moments with komugi. i hate to admit it but i was rooting for him throughout the whole arc. i didn’t really care about all the shit he did i just really love his character lol
Netero went in prepared to slay a monster, Zeno blasted the palace with his strongest attack and both wanted to lay waste to the King as quickly as possible, sacrificing their allies along the way... What they got was a human in shock, seeing the person he holds dear indiscriminately attacked by a man who believed he was blasting a den of beasts, both hesitated, as now they had to fight Meruem.
Meruem: "Komugi are you still there?" Komugi: "Yes i Sure i'm am not going anywhere Meruem: "Komugi , are u still here ?" "Yes here...lets Komugi: yes...Right Meruem: "Komugi.... Komugi: "Yes, yes? what is it ?" play another match...the loser goes first Meruem: "It appears i never defeated you a single time." Komugi: "what are u saying we've just gotten started!" Meruem: "Yes..." Meruem: "komugi, are you still here ?" Komugi: "Yes, of course." Komugi: "it's your turn, Meruem-sama." Meruem:"I'm a little tired....i need to take a short nap... Will you hold my hand? Komugi? Komugi are you there ?" Komugi: "I can hear you..i understand...like this ?" Meruem: "I'll wake up shortly........ will you stay by my side until i wake?" Komugi: "I've never left your side, I'll always be here." Meruem: "Komugi..." Komugi: "Yes, yes? What is it?" Meruem: "Thank you.." Komugi: "You're welcome." Meruem: will you call me..?" Komugi: "Yes? Meruem: "you will call me by my name one last time...?" Komugi: "Yes...good night..Meruem." I was born just to meet you - merium's last wotds
This arc having its main character grow from a human to a monster, its main antagonist grow from a monster to a human, all without even MEETING, is crazy
I like to think this is when the ants lost. Their humanity started to take over, and they began acting emotionally as opposed to their cold and calculating nature prior.
Such a shame. Pitou did all the hard work and followed the King no matter what, even while the other two guards were trying to kill Komugi but in the end, instead of even looking for her once, he just assumed she was dead and didn't even try and find her.
Meureum is probably my favorite villain in any piece of fiction. He has a character arc of changing into a different, better person, which is truly unique for an antagonist. Long live Togashi!
To anyone saying Gon would have defeated Meruem. Keep in mind that Meruem when fighting against Netero, Meruem was not using his full strenght, his goal was not to kill Netero but to make him accept defeat. Pitou did say that Gon had the power to defeat the king but I don't think that would be the case since Gon's body is so fragile. His arm was easily cut off by a dead Pitou. Gon didn't have a chance at all to defeat Meruem.
@@neverendingstory5700 wtf Put more attention to the scene. Gon let his guard off, thinking he had defeated Pitou. If it were not for Killua, Pitou's corpse would have cut off Gon's head. In fact, Killua was the reason Gon looked away.
1:10 at this moment Netero knew that this is an ugly job, he will play the villain, and Meruem is probably the strongest thing he s ever faces outside of the dk.
I wanna point out how Netero travelled TWICE to the Dark Continent and returned without any psychological sequels... AND EVEN SO Meruem's aura is scary to him... He truly is the King.
I don't care what people say. Hunter x hunter would always be for me the best shonen anime. It has a way of telling a story that can't be compared to any other. I can't get enough of it's charm
The reason why the narrator makes such ehavy point of the fact that meruem walked pass them easily is because in that time, Meruem could have easily dealt considerable dmg to both of them already

When you realizes that pitou was crying because by the first time in his life, she was able to see in the king's face an emotion that she doesnt know that Meruem was capable of, and she was feeling an eccho of that emotion. Thats why the king's face was dark, because this emotion couldnt be represented, only felt

Chimera ants like Meruem and the royal guards aren't the norm in the Dark Continent

Pitou the only true servant of meruem. She doesn't care if he becomes dictator or just a loving king. she would serve him either way
The writing is unreal. Something as simple as him walking between two people was epic.
Fr. Togashi is just built different when it comes to writing.
Also the whole arc was potraying how emotionless Mereum was but on the other hand how much he was understanding about human values and morals, and at that moment it symbolised his love for Komugi and it's pretty easy to ready the emotions he showed
laxman khatri good for you. but apparently there are people out there who cant understand non spoken language that easily.
jean safiera Well, i watch videos of people who break down the personas and personalities of all the characters in Hunter x Hunter so when I rewatch these small cut scenes, it becomes even more apparent what they were feeling leading up to this arc.

Van david the 3 royal guards where born to serve the king, thats the only mission they have in mind thats why they were touched to much.

Depends on how he's killed. Although most likely the bomb will survive and explode. At least with Neteros capability to avoid critical damage.

Mereum is not a villain.
He doesnt do evil things.
He just views humans as food like how humans sees chickens and cows as food.
its like when we realized that dogs are our friend we stopped eating them he did the same
Pitou cried because she understood exactly how much Komugi meant to Meruem, and she became overwhelmed with the same sadness and desperation.
More accurately she cried because the king asked her out of dire and honest need, he depended on her in getting this done and that meant the world for her.
Wrong. Its because she is humbled that the king trusts her.

And then everyone else dies once the nuke activates
This scene just amazingly shows how Mereum’s wrath is honestly terrifying, but since Mereum is slowly gaining the thoughts and morals of humans, he controls this wrath as if it was a calm but powerful wave.
This was the most beautiful arc I’ve ever seen on an anime finished the chimera arc today and almost had tears at the end
ya know, chimera ant arc has one if the best story ever in anime. its not just about powers and shit. theres actually values and emotion involved that makes this arc really beautiful.
