- For our V-8 Muscle Car Challenge, we brought the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS, 2016 Ford Mustang GT and 2016 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack to Phoenix, Arizona for a week of intensive testing. We measured zero-to-60 mph and quarter-mile acceleration at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. Watch the video to see how they did.

+Toyota4Life The 245s are basically to do burn outs with when you leave the dealership. My friends scat pack challenger with just drag radials and track mode has run high 11s. So yeah those 245s are just to burn rubber pretty much.
+readelssj tires go a long way. People are always trying to get a couple more ponies out of their cars with simple bolt ons when a good set of tires will shave more time off, especially on the street.

+Daymon Rondino Killing it in V6 sales to young girls. That is what eventually killed off the 4th Gen Camaro. That's not what is happening right now. Since the 2010 Camaro came out it has been winning in sales up until the mustang redesign, then the stangs started winning in sales. And now that the Camaro is newer it is selling more again.

Daymon Rondino You were totally correct. The V8 Camaros were killing the V8 Stangs in performance but the overall sales (mostly V6) Mustang was killing the Camaro.
I wish ford had stayed with push rod engines, I used to race 5.0s and beat my fair share of other makes and models with those old coupes.
+WarmSoftKitty I have no issues driving a camaro. Visibility problems happen mostly on small people. You can always adjust the seat and GM also added side sensors and camera to help but people suck at driving and do not know how to use anything.
+WarmSoftKitty it is true it does not have as much visibility as other cars but people exaggerate. You learn the car you drive and you won't have any issues. most of the guys that have done personal reviews are around 5.7
Personally I'm a Chevy guy through and through and I have to say I'm glad to see that the muscle car race is back. Respect to Ford and Dodge and I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

I Want To Support The Camaro, But I Love The Challenger!
good piece of journalism, I would never buy a Camaro, more of a Dodge fan not that I would buy the Challenger. but, you guys did a good job of explaining your testing parameters, and trying to make the test as neutral as possible, I felt it was very unbiased. to the challenge of fans out there, a tire swap will make a huge difference as if you didn't already know that!

As much as I like the way the Challenger Scat Pack looks, I just couldn't put $40k into one knowing I could have an M4 killer from Chevy for the same price.

im a dodge fan, but camaro got its game stepped up, it can hang with M4's and almost a hellcat, Dodge is that guy that makes a shit ton of HP but cant put it all down because he cant afford better tires, mustang is that guy that talks a lot of shit, makes respectable HP, but gets his ass beat and makes claims like "i missed a gear" or "sorry i was thinking about hitting the crowd and got side tracked" camaro is that guy thats well rounded, and keeps a calm head and delivers all of the HP to the tires and takes the W

+WarmSoftKitty my 10 hz gps data logger and the baked in performance pages would prove you wrong. Believe what you want but with a good feather bringing traction right to the edge, you can get it to a 4.4 on a prepped surface.

I own a camaro (2013) but i'm just happy to see some american muscle anywhere I go. Each car has its own personality with its own strengths and weaknesses. 'Merica!
I have a 2018 Camaro 2SS fully loaded in hype metallic blue it's a really fun car to daily drive. If you have one with npp performace exhaust trust me pull the fuse for the npp valve and throw in a K&N drop in intake filter it doesn't void your warranty and now I run 11.9s in the quarter mile. Now originally I ran 12.1s and a few 12 flats so it's not a huge difference but for $60 it will make you run dead even with Corvette stingrays and it's louder.
The 6th gen Camaro SS is a rocket!! It's everything a performance car should be and everything the Mustang GT and Challenger R/T wish they were.
lol, sorry to burst your bubble, but The Challenger RT scatpack used here is only the third fastest trim of the challengers. If they used an SRT, or SRT Hellcat, the Camaro SS would have been left in the dust at second place.

+Jrion The GT directly competes with the SS. The GT350 will compete with the new Z28 or possibly ZL1 depending on what they name it.
The Shelby GT350R is the Z/28 competitor . If they continue to call the Supercharged model ZL1 , that will compete with the Challenger SRT Hellcat . Ford hasn't said anything about a GT500 replacement yet . I have saw a rumored MACH1 mule but who knows what is waiting to be unleashed ?!!!
+Jrion No mag has tested this yet but a Camaro SS with Brembos is probably about even with a GT350 track pack, for like $10k less. And I'm talking performance specs and track times.
The fact that some of you guys in the comment section below are comparing the new Camaro SS to the Dodge HellCat is MAGNIFICENT.

+Jen Realegeno actually I would settle for a shootout with equal tires. Not only the size, but the tires themselves are a joke. The goodyear Ealge F1's are only good for burnouts nothing more. With a swap to 275 nt-05s I was able to get a 12.255 out of my scat pack.
And no hate, both are amazing machines. Just one company could have equipped a little better rubber to close the gap.
for that instant power drop on the mustang you have to turn off advance track not just traction control

Stop comparing the Scat Pack to a 5.0, it's not even in the same price range. the RT is around the same price as the 5.0 but since it's too slow they gotta use the Scat Pack which is basically the SRT8

Challengers rule the dragstrip, but you need the ZF 8 speed Automatic to get into the 11s. Try the 1320 and see the results....

It's more gearing and power delivery vs overall weight.
Impressive for the Camaro SS . I knew Chevrolet would come back with a strong package to compete with the Mustang GT P.P. / Challenger Scat Pack. I am a Ford fan and i am wondering what is the next Mustang GT upgrade to grab the crown back ??!! You can't say the Shelby GT350 because that is a Camaro SS1LE competitor. My thoughts also point to the upcoming ZL1 that will be at least as quick as the Cadillac CTS-V or quicker .
There is no GT350 competitor right now from the Camaro. The SS with the 1LE package is the competitor for the Mustang GT with the PP package. They're both just upgrade packages for the stock car. Just because the 1LE had always been ahead of it's Mustang competition, doesn't mean we can bump it up to a next class of car for comparison sake. The GT350 will have to wait for the Z28 to come out before it can be properly compared to the Camaro.

the reason mustang's spin out is because they have A electrical monfunction that locks the breaks and stiffens the suspension, it happens when a driver tries to show off but the mustang electrical system thinks its loosing control. This problem is fixable.
As a mustang fan, gotta say that new Camaro is pretty fuckkng great hopefully ford steps it's game up with the gt...
Did you completely disable the Advancetrac stability system in the Mustang? I'm doubtful of that. Never had any issues with power dropping after launch in my 16 GT with that system disabled and I can go 0-60 in 4.4 consistently.

Mine hops aswell becuase i need to leave the traction cotrol pressed couple of seconds so it can disable everything
whats up. my 15gt does the same thing as that one. you can totally disable the traction control and for some reason it will still cut power on occasion. not all the time just once in awhile. You really notice it when the car is more sideways.

+Carl Meaux Challenger also suffers from massive weight. It's verging on that of a SUV or midsize truck. I'm calmly waiting for the next gen version. For some reason i feel it may be something special or it maybe a massive flop. I'm hoping for the first one =). I am a fan of all three cars
biggboysouth Weight is only an issue when it's disproportionate on the chassis and when it comes to consumables. The platform is actually balanced quite well, the weight is where you want it to be. When you put wheels and tires that are even somewhat performance oriented, the car comes alive. Dodge did the scat pack a disservice with the 245s on this car, I have surprised a number of people at TWS, NOLA, and Road Atlanta because they have your train of thought. Nothing like making people gawk when your "boat" posts better times than 95% of the people at a autoX.
biggboysouth And to give you an idea, scat pack with cloth interior has a 4,082 lbs curb weight.... The track oriented fifth gen Z28 3,837.... only 6% difference in the weight and I don't see people complaining about the Z, but i also see that chevy put thought into probably the most important part or performance.... the TIRES.
And not saying it couldn't shed some weight to improve, I'm just trying to get across people drastically over exaggerate the performance loss because of it.
I am quoting what I read from chief engineer for the Camaro . He specifically said the upcoming 1LE is competing with the Shelby GT350 . He also mentioned the new 1LE is faster than the previous 5th gen by 4 seconds . But you are correct it is a handling upgrade package .

The Mustang is actually on top. Not sure what you mullet heads are thinking. The problem is, you have to jump up from the base models. Sure, the SS beats the GT but what happens up the ladder when we compare the GT350 to the Z28? Sure, you have to pay more to play seriously, but the Mustang has bigger guns than just a GT. OH, and lets not even start on the Challenger! If it's horsepower and straight line stats you seek I have to say only one word: HELLCAT

Yeah you're right. But it comes down to preference anyway what someone wants to drive. I have a 2013 Camaro SS. I just like them but I'm willing to admit that the right Mustang will beat it. However I don't want to drive a Mustang personally.
I have to say that sometimes it's not all about speed. The Mustang my opinion is as comfortable has the Dodge, has the best looks, costs the least, sounds great, and has a better legacy that never stopped existing.

I like all 3 cars quite a bit. I previously had a mustang GT and I currently have the Challenger Scat Pack. I couldn’t buy the Camaro because it has the worst visibility of any car I’ve ever driven. The Challenger has way to much power for those skinny tires. You can upgrade to 275s on the stock rims which gives you much better grip and is still good for daily driving.
Camaros are the fastest and better looking than all of them.

For me Mustang is # 1 in every way. Why?? Mustang is a legend of a car. Is been alive from 1964 1/5. Those coyotes are amazing with just 5.0 lts. Very easy to mode and they response amazing to boost. They sell more than their competition and now we have Ford Racing, Roush, saleen, steeda , RTR and more to make your Mustang to be a drag killing machine or a Drifting adrenaline monster.
They set the bar in bringing back the musclecar era with the terminator and the retro 2005 GT.

I am amazed that Chevy doesn't sell 10's of thousands more Camaro per year then they do. The Alpha platform is incredible. It really is the best sportscar on the market for the dollar. All of these cars are wonderfully great however.... I'd be happy with any of them..... except the Mustang LOL

The Mustang didn't break down, they didn't know how to turn off the AdvancTrac system. All they needed to do is to hold down the stability control button for 10 seconds to turn off the traction management system.
i thought everyone knew how to do that... its the same for gm trucks cars ford trucks and even some hemis im not sure why they didnt know how to do that lol

To me I think the only muscle car is the Challenger it has kept it's body shape for a long time and the other cars are more focused on speed than anything else really..

Yea, knew that would happen when the 2015 model came out and read it was 300 lbs heavier than the 2014. That was disappointing
My 2014 Mustang GT managed to run 1/4 mile in 12.9 @ 110. 6 speed manual, 3.31 gears, 235 all season tires. It did have full header back exhaust with cat deletes but no tune or anything else. I'm surprised they couldn't get better time in a new Mustang with 255 summer tires and 3.73 gears.
2012 brembo pkg 3.73 gears 285s in rear intake exhaust and Bama tune 12.2@117.

I think they need to figure the traction control out on the ford and it would have been more competitive at least in the 12.7-12.9 range not over 13 I know they added weight but they added hp also looks like ford could use some suspension upgrades also it will be interesting to see what they do for the next refresh let's hope lighter and better suspension

I enjoy my 2016 SS way more than my 2008 GT500. I destroyed the new 5.0 and also a Scat pack, although It was very close with the scat pack, I pulled by a fender, but I have a 6 speed manual, I hear the auto 8 speed is faster but I enjoy my manual.

I agree! I have always been a camaro fan. I had an iroc and an f body but damn these new ones are ugly. The interior too. I love the looks of the new mustang and just bought a 2016 GT premium PP. The camaro has better HP numbers for sure but I have already done the airaide intake corsa extreme cat backs and 1" lowering springs. Putting on Kooks headers and a Whipple stage 2 supercharger soon. Should give the hellcat a run for its money after that.

As an option you can order a wider wheel and tire package for the Challenger that has 275s or you can just get the T/A 392 and they come on the car stock.

Love my Camaro so much though out my years of ownership I've had all three at different times and still like the big 3 but when it came down to have a choice the only car I had on my mind was the ss I guess it's good and bad about the sales after a few years

Going back to look at the old Motor Trend videos of the 2012 Charger & Challenger Srt, among other videos, they ran 4.3 0-60. You put the better driver in each one of these cars and that car will win. And no I'm not boohooing because my favorite lost. Its not my favorite because I thought it was faster then the Camaro and Mustang its my favorite because thats what I like. GO AMERICA!!!!!
for the mustang you need to do 2 things.1 is put is in track mode (which they did). 2 which they did not do is put your foot on the brake and hold the traction control button for 10 seconds, THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO TURN ADVANCEDTRACK OFF!!!!. I was running 13.2-13.4 on the track until i learned to turn the advanced track off. After i did it was on consistent 12.8 over and over again. After i got a CAI and tune on radials im constantly in the 12 to 12.2 range. With headers and GT350 manifold its a low 11 second car.
in love with the new SS AND YES i have a bias for mustangs. if it was strictly for the track i say ss, but for everyday driving any car other than the camaro. At 5'9" i'm too short to drive that shit everyday. lol.
you mean to tell me that my bolt on foxbody is almost as fast to 60 as a new mustang gt with about double the horsepower.. something doesn't seem right about this comparison.

Look at difference in size of motors!! Mustang has the smallest out of all and still is a competitive car seems like chevy and dodge need to work on some things
if you hold the traction control button in the mustang for 5 seconds it turns the traction control all of the way off
