I'm a grown @$$ 42 year old man and I break everytime 😢 I still have my father with us but even the thought of ever losing him breaks me into a billion pieces
I was a nurse for 30 years working in end of life care. Because of that, I'm as tough as old boots, it takes a lot to make me cry. But this song ... every time
James wrote this for his father who sat beside him. His fathers kidneys were failing and we was considered terminal. That is why James is so emotional in the video which they did in 1 take. Through the song going viral a kidney donor was found and last I knew his father was alive and well.
I feel you and I cry with you. I know exactly how this hits as a daughter who was the last one to speak with my father before he could speak no more. I washed his face and feet as he slept for the last time. So grateful I had that moments. Take care ❤😢
Him an his dad were British officers an his dad had a kidney disease an was dying. James recorded this in one take no extras of any kind straight from his heart an as raw as it gets. No takes an retakes no editing nothing. Good thing is after it came out a long lost cousin was a kidney match an donated his kidney to james dad an he is doing find now. Miracles are real
@@KindergartenTeacherReacts Not trying to be a dick here, but it has far more to do with the kindness of the donor cousin and the years of studying, training and performing of the surgeon and medical team involved, than it does a God that many people do not believe even exists. And in a further twist to it all, James's dad had previously donated a kidney of his own, but to show that I am not totally heartless, I did find your reaction both moving and touching though.
James has been performing and releasing albums consistently, non stop. His live shows are brilliant. The lyrics to this song were actually written by James’ sister. James turned it into a farewell song for his dad who had stage 4 kidney disease. James than thought it would be a good idea to include his dad in the video. It had to be done in one take as James and all the crew were in tears, but not his dad who reportedly said “why is everyone crying? I’m not dead yet!”. Definitely check out ‘The Girl That Never Was’. Another emotional song from his heart which, at first he denied was about him but later admitted that it was.
My father passed away last year and I felt the same way the first time i heard this song. But it is an amazing tribute for his dad and a great song for the rest of us. My father would have been 82 on March 24th this year and I miss him dearly. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, that’s his real father, and he was sitting there all the time at the time this song was written by James. His father was dying of kidney disease. After this video, he put a plea out for anyone who can help with his father’s blood type and a distant relative from Australia, seen it donated, his kidney and his father survived, and by the way, those are real tears he’s crying
You needed to feel this strongly. Everyone will face the loss of someone they are not done with, and we rarely know how to say goodbye. Thank you for showing the raw emotion. It was real.
James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. If this song doesn't get to you emotionally, there is something wrong with you. This song resonates with me as I was my dad's caregiver for 5 years until he passed away a few years ago.
Courtney - I cried along with you. My younger sister and her husband (both wonderful people) just lost his Mum a few days ago. I knew his Mum very well and she was a wonderful (and very funny) woman with a heart of gold. Unfortunately her body wasn't in the best condition and she passed on although not without plenty of warnings. The two of them had the chance to say proper goodbyes. I'm really sorry about your loss, Courtney. Your reaction was devastating and utterly honest. The track "Monsters" has that effect on you - just devastating - James's Dad was dying but he did survive and it was his Dad in the video. As a Buddhist, I'll say pujas for you, Courtney ❤ from Jo in the UK.
I stumbled over this song when my father was slowly wasting away in a nursing home. And two weeks later I did exactly what the song says - see my father a last time, and then turning out the lights and closing the door, knowing that I would never see him again.
I've been learning this on my keyboard.. can't get through it .keys are constantly covered in drips from my tears... I never had a chance to say goodbye to my dad.. was so sudden and he was only 47.. heart attack........he wrote it about this dad.. his dad was dying and needed a kidney transplant and this is his dad .in the video
Events that have happened with James Blunt in real life he has turned them into songs.Monsters was a real situation and his father had a kidney disease, time was running out,James saved his fathers life by his song writing.Monsters traveled around the world and a doner came forward which made a match for his father,so he lived.Had James not wrote that song then that doner would not have come forward, Those tears in james eyes were real.I say no more.
I heard James donated all the proceeds from this amazing recording to the UK based charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much fantastic work with and for ex-servicemen & women, and as a former officer (like his dad) in the British military, that was a beautiful thing to do. God bless him. 🙋♂ what a lovely reaction.
So my Grandmother and Uncle both had dementia. Watching them just going through life struggling with there mind failing, and forgeting where they were was tough. But seeing them in the hospital struggling to breath really hits differently. Seeing them sitting there not looking as we remember them. I know that i got to kiss my grandmother forehead and tell her i love her just days before she passed. Yes i miss her, but knowing that she is not struggling anymore is soothing. This songs brings back alot. 😪🥲
Thank you for sharing your story. That was touching. God Bless you. It's better to know they're in Heaven now. Can I suggest a song? "Grandpa" by Tyson James .. listen to it and then come back here.
The winner from last season of American Idol Iam Tongi did preformed this song for his audition, and is amazing and emotional too, he dedicated it to his father who had passed away months before his audition. James Blunt and Iam Tongi performed it on the finale show which is emotional also.
it's his father's hand on his arm, with that thumb just stroking his sweater... still the daddy of that little boy -- comforting him. And at the very end (most people missed this), after the music goes quiet, his dad reaches over and pats him. gets me every single time
My mind wanders off sometimes when I’m trying to cope with a situation that is not easy to deal with like this song.the absolute genius and talent that is required to make a song that is so powerful and meaningful.I know it’s about his Dad.
This song hits me on a personal level because before my father passed, he had a stroke and the pressure from bleeding on his brain caused some delusions. He was convinced the doctors and nurses at the hospital were trying to kill him. So, each of us 5 children would take turns spending a night with him. Mom needed the break after spending all day, every day with him. He would see people in his room at night who he said were there to kill him for what he had done while he was in the military. So the part about "it's my turn to chase the monsters away' hits me like a ton of bricks.
The significance of the "I'm not your son ..." bit is that this is what he and his father said to each other when James shipped out to Afghanistan. Both he and his dad served in the British Army and his father ia of the old generation where you're not supposed to be vulnerable as a man and this was his way of taking away the emotional part of saying goodbye to your son as he went off to war.
