The reassurance from a father to a son by simply putting his hand on your arm…..the little rub at the end to soothe his emotions……unbelievable 🥲

My dad died in my arms of a massive heart attack the day after my mom died. He couldn't live without her. That was back in 2001 and it marked me. I know I'll see them in heaven one day, but I still miss them so much. I can't watch this video without a lot of tears. It's beautiful.

James wanted this to be 100% real and authentic. This was the first time he'd sung it to his dad, who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually find a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. First time I heard this was 3 days after my Dad passed away and it broke me I lost my Dad 5 years ago this August after he fell and hit his head sadly he didn't survive it caused a bleed on his brain I sadly never had the chance to tell him I loved him and that hurts but i know he is at peace now.

My father died two weeks after an airline mistake allowed me to stop overnight to see him at the nursing home; he needed 24 hour care. The last words my father spoke to me were, "I've always loved you". I could not be there for him when he needed me but somehow this song makes me feel better for he and I talked like two men for hours that day; I was so very lucky in that it was one of his good days. Thank you for this so very much.

James Blunt is a much derided singer here in the UK following on from his first smash hit "You're Beautiful", he has largely risen above this by displaying a wonderful, self mocking, sense of humour and, yes, being a damned fine song writer and performer. Both James and his father were serving officers in the British military, so it must have taken a high degree of courage to put such raw emotion on display in this video, especially coming from such a macho environment as the army. Another highly charged official video is "No Bravery", especially so with the horrors going on in the Middle East currently. This video is a record of his experience as an officer deployed in the Balkan War, some years ago now, it really is a devastating watch and you can almost see in James' eyes that he's re-living some of the atrocities he must have witnessed in that bloody conflict. How the hell he gets through the song without breaking down, I'll never know but, whatever, it's a Must Watch.

I am an Australian 51 year-old male army veteran of 28 years. I studied martial arts for 35 years and was an instructor for 22 of those years from the age of 12 to 17 I lived on the streets due to having the most abusive childhood you could possibly imagine at the hands of my parents and it was safer being on the streets being beaten up regularly by guys much bigger than me than it was to live with my parents. My point is is that I’m no snowflake and I’ve lost a lot of people in my life and yet every time I watch this video I end up in tears James Blunt has a gift of convey sad emotions effectively. His earlier hit.” goodbye my lover.” is the number one song in the world sung at funerals. Which shows you how much of an impact his songs have on people suffering loss and the only thing I can think of whilst I don’t know his life story all I can imagine is that he has experienced some deep level of pain in his life that he is able to tap to when he writes his music

The first time I heard this song was a few months after my father passed. Although we didn't see eye-to-eye on many things and our relationship was often strained, we grew closer in the years after my mom passed. Unfortunately, he died during the "pandemic" and I wasn't able to be with him at the end because of the nonsensical /inhumane covid restrictions put in place. Subsequently, I became very bitter and refused to let myself process the tremendous loss and associated grief...until I heard this song. Then the floodgates opened wide and I wept like I had never done before, for days afterwards. Thank you James...I believe you saved my life by helping me feel what I needed to feel and getting closure on this very difficult time.

This song of James Blunt’s, “Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, & battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying..........

My father and I did not have a relationship after my parent's divorce when I was 10 years old. The truth is that he was terribly abusive. We had an opportunity to reconnect and mend the broken relationship when I was 25. Unfortunately, our last conversation during that brief window was heated, it'd be the last time we spoke. I regret that to this day. This song reflects the love between father and son I wish I experienced. I'm incredibly delighted for James and his father and jealous at the same time. James is so good at these sad songs, and I think a large part of it is how honest he is about them. Obviously I dont know the guy but from what little Ive read, most if not all of these songs are based on real events in his life and to a certain extent they are a form of therapy for him. I guess we all have tragic events in our lives, but to be willing and able to put some of the hardest moments in your life on public display like this takes a special kind of courage.
I would also recommend Goodbye my lover, No bravery, Carry you home and The girl that never was. Tissues on standby. Although I must point out, contrary to popular belief, he does have a few happier songs too.

For many of us, we never had the chance to say goodbye to our father or mother because of a devastating heart failure or an accidental death… this is what my family had to deal with 2 years in a row, first our father and then our mother. Watching this video makes me realise how hard it must be to see our father or mother going away slowly because of sickness but how courageous are these people to evolve around a known fatality. This song makes me cry every time I hear it. The lyrics are so powerful and true.

This got me bad. My dad passed away 8 years ago and although I and the family were with him in the hospital when he passed I never got a final conversation with him. I miss him terribly.

But despite everything, his father survived. He was seriously ill and at the time the video was made, everyone thought there wasn't much time left. The grief, the tears, it was all as real as it could be. James insisted on filming the whole thing in one go. No outtakes. Just pure, unadulterated emotion with everything that goes with it. There was a mood of deep grief on set. The crew, everyone present, stood in tears. His father looked around in surprise, it is said, and asked "Why is everyone crying? I'm still here." But this video was to turn the situation around. It caught the attention of a distant relative who was ultimately able to be used as a donor. So the song that was supposed to represent the farewell became a lifesaver. A story from a picture book comes true. Simply amazing!

Most of James Blunt's songs are based on his experiences - No Bravery, Carry You Home, and Goodbye My Lover, are all worth digging up live versions.

Crying and almost forgetting you are a stage presence coach only shows your humanity.
If you are lucky enough to still have a living father, call him, tell him you love him, thank him for all he’s done, hug him before the time is gone.

I don't care how tough some guy thinks he is, or how unemotional they are. If anyone has been through something like this, this song will get them. This song I had heard before, but after I lost my dad it broke me. It is good therapy for me to come back and listen to it once, or twice a year since I am one of those unemotional types.

I have seen it mentioned on other reactions to this that when James or his dad were being deployed, they would say goodbye just like the chorus. “We’re just two grown men saying goodbye.” It helped them manage the emotions of that time. When I found that out the song became even more special. Ironically, it’s this song that saved his life. A distant cousin saw it thanks to all the media coverage, got tested and it was a match. James’ father is now doing well.

This and Alter Bridge - Blackbird were the songs that i listened to a lot in the months leading up to my dads death. I was glad that he died to put him out of his misery.
The lyric from Blackbird that got me was "Let the wind carry you home, blackbird flyaway, may you never be broken again"

I lost my dad at 13 years old. Heavy impact. I still can't listen to Dan FOGLEBURG'S " Leader of the Band" without falling apart. I'm a musician and I can't perform the piece without loosing it. This piece is powerful.

Janet, I am so sorry to hear about your relationship with your dad, but remember your true Father is always there for you. My own father passed away over ten years ago and we did not have the best relationship but I knew that he cared about me. I am a father myself and soon-to-be grandfather and I want to be there for my son. I am sure many of your listeners will adopt you and be surrogate dads for you. Also, never apologize for crying, it shows your heart, and it's beautiful.
