I'm new to trials and have a Hex. Tried some moves on my Salsa Bucksaw, and they seem much, much more difficult due to the weight and geometry of the bike. Particularly, the seat was really in the way. Do you know any good full suspension mountain bikes that have a really low, out of the way seat when the dropper post is dropped?
@@at5504 unfortunately not. Very often women's model bikes, like Giant's Liv lineup have lower seat tubes, but mountain bikes just don't require the flexibility of movement that trials bikes do. I frequently ride trials on my 1994 steel Marin Muirwood, which has geometry not far off a modern road bike. Even with the saddle slammed, there are some moves I simply cannot do because I cant get my body low enough on the bike. Honestly I quite like how that requires imagination to overcome. Have fun on your Hex. Its a superb bike
@@judechandler5102 I'll will of course keep goofing around on my Bucksaw, but often figured even a normal 27.5" bike would be easier to handle that my Bucksaw for trials moves. The Hex is awesome. It's hard to want to do anything else, even 7 months into it, it's my favorite bike. Whenever I'm in the market for my next mountain bike, I'm certainly going to look for qualities like ultra-low seat clearance so I can do trail rides and then goof around with trials moves and feel comfortable.
I had to ditch the vid and come back later. Some of those crash reels are incredible. As much as I admire your riding style and aspire to one day be that controlled and smooth, what Id really like is to have the patience and commitment to try a line that many times in a sitting. Thanks Jude, I like to think most trials riders have the same mindset...we know our ability and that something is achievable and it just takes the right combination of body weight and technique to get it done, walking away from something I know is doable is just the worst!

I got to thinking what would the build be if you were to put together a ful sus bike geared towards trials? Maybe a slope style frame with DJ forks and trials parts?

There's a couple of contenders, the Banshee Spitfire (the 26" version) looks cool, Maybe a Canyon Stitched 720 but honestly the Kingdom Bikes prototype they're testing at the moment looks fantastic...titanium, 80mm rear wheel travel and can be run singlespeed with no tensioner, looks pretty ideal!

In the earlier part it look as the seat wasn’t dropped down, braver than most. The stick in situ bending, I had to something similar with rear dropout hanger on the side of a trail, wasn’t going to walk back. The end of the vid, realised that was a wind tower prop in the corner of the shot, not something wrong with my screen ha ha.
I thought the bramble fact was a lovely bit of business! Also FYI you had a chiffchaff, wren and robin all competing at the same time to make it into the intro of the vlog! There's a bit of info that nobody asked for!

Ali's chainring repair seems like something from the Sam Pilgrim Technical Institute for MTB Repair. 😂 Seriously, though, few things are cooler than seeing someone use whatever they can forage in their surroundings to do a "good enough repair".
Now I'm even more excited to pick up my 5010 from the LBS in a couple hours! Can you do a video on how you set up the 5010 (or any mtb for a larger topic) to gear it towards trials riding like this? I bent my chainring once, it was funny because i was jumping a small stepup and there little tree that you have to brake after you land and i went full speed to it and almost chopped it down 😂😂
I tried to order two of the Fabio Wibmer SICKnature series Canyon Torch bikes in small yesterday and sad to learn they only made 80 of them.( No Ali Clarkson sig series available yet) so now I am looking at the Santa Cruz Blur like you have among others but want them in 27.5 's for ripp'n through the tight Canadian single track trails. What size is you frame Ali? Do you find a smaller cockpit more suited for MTB trials or because you are a lanky dude the larger cockpit serves you better? I think the moss was your enemy in todays vid. As you know many mountain bikers purchase trials bikes to improve their MTB abilities, you are about to grow your base yet again is my guess. :-)
a signature bike would be so cool! I'm maybe not as lanky as you think, I'm under 6ft...I'm riding a medium 5010 and that's a great fit for trials and MTBing but if I was purely doing MTB I'd probably go up a size.
Tyre pressure was roughly 26-30, no idea on the fork setting sorry, the shock is fully open but with just a little faster rebound... it’s exactly how I run it for normal riding apart from the faster shock rebound

Hi Ali, bit of a noob question. Do you run high or low pressures when doing trials stuff and does that translate to the Santa Cruz? Are the pressures similar between a full sus endure and your trials bike? Excelent content as always! Cant beleive only 237 like? Oh well, one more from me. Great channel. Excellent work
I actually run pretty much the same pressures for trials as well as MTB (I did a days MTBing the other day and I didn't adjust the air pressure), I do run the rebound a bit faster in the rear for trials stuff though
Every time I watch an all mountain or freeride video I think of you. You would be very good going down a mountain in a mtb without times without haste without a timer. You have the ability to stand as long as you want to jump and to go down real walls. I think you would be very good. It would be interesting to try.
yeah, I'd love to find somewhere to do stuff like that...I drive past mountains in Scotland that look like they have exactly the right features but when you get closer you realise the drops are bigger and slopes steeper plus the grass inbetween is either boggy or extremely lumpy :(

I think the moss was your enemy in todays vid. As you know many mountain bikers purchase trials bikes to improve their MTB abilities, you are about to grow your base yet again is my guess. :-)
a signature bike would be so cool! I'm maybe not as lanky as you think, I'm under 6ft...I'm riding a medium 5010 and that's a great fit for trials and MTBing but if I was purely doing MTB I'd probably go up a size.

just looks softer because all the force is on just a small part of the tyre, I think I was close to 30psi

I’d love to know what your bike setup was. What tire pressure? Fork setting? Shock locked out? Etc.?
Tyre pressure was roughly 26-30, no idea on the fork setting sorry, the shock is fully open but with just a little faster rebound... it’s exactly how I run it for normal riding apart from the faster shock rebound

Hi Ali, bit of a noob question. Do you run high or low pressures when doing trials stuff and does that translate to the Santa Cruz? Are the pressures similar between a full sus endure and your trials bike? Excelent content as always! Cant beleive only 237 like? Oh well, one more from me. Great channel. Excellent work
I actually run pretty much the same pressures for trials as well as MTB (I did a days MTBing the other day and I didn't adjust the air pressure), I do run the rebound a bit faster in the rear for trials stuff though
Every time I watch an all mountain or freeride video I think of you. You would be very good going down a mountain in a mtb without times without haste without a timer. You have the ability to stand as long as you want to jump and to go down real walls. I think you would be very good. It would be interesting to try.
yeah, I'd love to find somewhere to do stuff like that...I drive past mountains in Scotland that look like they have exactly the right features but when you get closer you realise the drops are bigger and slopes steeper plus the grass inbetween is either boggy or extremely lumpy :(
