Most good full sus bikes from 120-180mm travel can do it all these days, and its just the rider preference for how twitchy/playful or dump-trucky they want their ride to feel. Very few people can actually ride the terrain that NEEDS and enduro bike, but they sure do love pretending theyre all rampage riders when theyre at the pub lol
You can look at it the other way around, with an Enduro bike someone with less ability can ride more difficult trails. And there's room to grow if gnarly trails are your thing. For me the trail bike offers the perfect balance, on long rides the Enduro bike isn't that good as expected.
Very few people actually have the skill to fully utilize a 5000$ bike either yet here we are with a whole couple of generations of bikers with just those.

Wheels and tires transform bikes. You can put soft downhill tires, inserts and heavy duty wheels on a 150mm rig and bomb down almost anything. Or you get some light carbon wheels and lightweight, fast rolling tires and take part on an XC or MTB marathon race. Nothing makes more of a difference on a bike.
A dropper, a head tube angle 65 degrees or less and breaks with 4 pistons is what you need to look for if you are considering buying a capable trail/enduro bike
I think AM got simply renamed to Enduro once the sport became popular and at the same time every category tends to get more and more suspension travel every couple of years.
My first Mtb is a 29er trail bike with 130mm travel and its a beast on the trails for me. But of i ever have the chance i would love to own an enduro but at the same time i could probably just upgrade my fork and shock with some that have more suspension travel.

I'm still riding a 07 stumpy 140 mil travel both ends hope wheelset slx n xt groupset. Just the small wheels that let it down, got a 2000 rhythm fsr aswell which is still a quick bike
So what this excellent video did, mostly, was reinforce my choice to go from an Enduro rig to my Commencal Meta TR. It's really closer to the enduro bike than to the trail bike according to many the comparisons in this video, but it carries many of the benefits of the trail bike. It's got mostly an enduro geometry but it's light, agile, and has the anti-squat of a trail bike. Best choice I've made in a while. Thanks for the comparison, Doddy!
Yeah, that's true. They're all so similar in spec! Enduro spec can start from 160mm of travel and freeride/super enduro can be around 180mm of front travel.
I got a "Trailduro" Pivot Switchblade. I want the extra travel for my bad back. Rather get out on a ride than sit in a chair at home, so if that gets me out there, then it's worth it.
I am a lighter weight rider although I do like some drops and such. I found the perfect combo is an enduro frame with the fox 36 170mm and a nice smooth DPx2 providing 160mm. I highly recommend everyone looking into their needs before buying a 190 mm zeb or a DHX
My 130 front and rear travel YT izzo is perfect for where I live, can go lose at the local weeknight xc races and then turn around and crash on the flow jump trails at the bike park on the weekends
What about Forbidden's Druid? 130 back and 150 front, 65.5 head angle, 15 kg, high pivot, some even put coil shock on it... Some great riders even do Enduro races on it... Wut do you guys think about that bike?
So a cross country bike is not suitable for trail or enduro riding. So if you have a cross country bike you should not ride on trails. Personally I ride what you would classify as Cross country and I ride it everywhere as a general purpose bike. I find looking at the mass of bikes on sale 2022 most are not suitable for general purpose riding and have fallen into different black holes of downhill, All mountain, trail and tour. I just tested a bike meant for general purpose and it was designed including aspects of all the other disciplines and as such was not suitable for it's intended purpose.

All he had to do was take the bike to get air and be on his way. My friend did not have any major problems putting this bike together; small issue was putting one of the brakes on straight; however when the son got home he was able to fix it. The bike rides well gears move correctly; good bike for the price. Wrote review after the son took the bike. Sorry.
I like to run enough air in my tires, just to afford myself a bit more protection... There is so much generalisation and numbers pulled from thin air, this is really pointless to watch. My trail bike is over 14kg, so it's an enduro right, but 130/130 travel so its xc bike really right? Majority of trail bikes on the trails are not expensive bikes, so majority will be 15kg and more, clearly all enduro bikes then right. Even cheap-ish hard tails can be over 15kg, built in a way, that it's the mountain that suffers bike strikes, and not a bike, suffering rock strikes. 😅 Cheap and cheerful, but heavy.

I'm looking to get a new bike. Currently I've got a Norco charger which is now about 7/8 years old. I use it to get to work and back everyday and on days off then use it for 20k rides on a multiple of terrains. Looking for maybe a full suspension but have read for what type of riding I do I should stick with a hardtail. Any suggestions with a budget of about 1500 quid.
They gotta update those specs cause the Fuel EX gen 6 is 34 -35 lbs and goes uphill better than other trail bikes, and its considered a trail bike and not an enduro bike.

With 170mm rear & 190mm front I’d say my Whyte G180 is classed as a ‘SuperEnduro’ rig. 29er front and offset headset cup has also put my HTA at 62.7. Long story short, big Enduro rigs are just DH bikes with a steeper STA & single crown forks. All other parts & geo are the same 🤷🏻♂️
What i took from this video was mainly a couple of your good analogies. Trail is more efficiency and agility enduro is more capability and stability. Thinking along them lines also id say enduro is more for grip and trail more for pop? What do you think?
The lines blur very easily. I wouldn’t give a mental model on the differences too much thought unless you want to start writing marketing copy for the brands. Just work out what you ride most often and spec a bike to suit

Hey Jonathan! That's right! Enduro is all about being more planted, so you can plough through gnarly terrain while trail bikes are built to blast over flat ground, making them more agile to move around when descending due to the weight difference! 👍
Doddy, please suggest a good 29x2.6 front tyre that is capable of commuting daily (Hardtail) and some off riding, I have already rekon 29x2.6 for the rear.
Well, I ride a BMC Supertrail01 since 2009 with 150mm in the front and 150 in the rear. It’s a 11.2 kg and was sold as a all mountain/enduro. Guess it’s more a trail bike with loads of travel. As a matter of fact, I do run a rock shox revelation u-turn, to switch between 125-150mm travel. If I lock the rear damper then I get a steeper angle, it’s almost like an XC bike. So, lock damper, lower fork and lock it’d XC to the top, get some great food, go back to 150mm travel and unlock the damper. Then, give it the beans! I love how capable my bike is, and how we grew up over the years. Don’t care about labels, it just runs :)
Oh gosh dud that was 14 years ago. He's talking about up to date bikes. Your bike is like a WW2 generation compared to todays generation. There have been so much advances since then especially geometry making them much better climbers while having the same travel while being heavier. Even more durable and safer going downhill as well.

I know that actual models are better, evolved etc. I just wanted to say, that I have an enduro bike, capable to ride it like an XC bike and also as a Enduro/Trailbike. Not perfect at each category, but fun and fast enough to challenge Gravel bikers and steal their KOMs ;) So, I don’t care about the „Enduro“ or „XC“ labels, I’m just riding. And don’t worry, I’m a mechanical engineer, I also own a small bike shop and I’m aware of the technology, especially when it comes down to shapes and design.
Mullet will make your bike more agile. If that's what you want, try it. However, since hardtails don't have any rear suspension, I would rather stick with a larger rear wheel because that helps rolling over bumps, which is the big weakness of hardtails.

Weight range for trail bikes seems a bit low. Id have said 12-15kgs was more realistic. Especially for those of us who don't have full carbon...

Ya tech has changed so much. Trail bikes now are a bit heavyier but still climb really well compared to their older counterparts.

I still ride my 2010 stumpy 26” tires 140mm front and rear. Special tuned the front fork and went from 130mm to 140mm.

When i changed froma a CX to a Enduro Bike the first thing i noticed was the handling; is way different. Like the bike tends to lean to the sides.

The average riders would not notice or care in most cases they buy eye candy and get on and enjoy

Bontrager XR4 maybe. Pretty darn heavy compared to my Maxxis Ardents 2.35. But the XR4’s will last a long long time

Because it came out in 2017, in 2018/19 pros were using 150 bikes, now its 160-170

Hello gmbn! Should I make my 27.5+ hardtail treck into a mullet? Will it ruin the geometry or just make it a shred machine?!
Mullet will make your bike more agile. If that's what you want, try it. However, since hardtails don't have any rear suspension, I would rather stick with a larger rear wheel because that helps rolling over bumps, which is the big weakness of hardtails.
