    I feel like Santa Cruz puts too much emphasis on speed. They currently don't have a single 27.5 bike in their lineup, which unfortunately has pushed them off my short list. Personally, I don't care about speed. I'm just looking for something that's fun at the bike park, and 29 is just too big for me, especially since I'm a shorter rider at 5'7.

    • @StreetPete
      @StreetPete Рік тому +1

      Same!! I do not want 29" wheels anywhere on my bike because A: I'm 5'9" and it looks ridiculous, B: I'm not fast enough to feel or want any benefit of a 29" wheel and I don't race and C: I want a more playful bike for just messing about on. I'm struggling to find any full 27.5 eMTB long travel, high battery capacity bikes anywhere. MTB manufacturers really need to understand that not everyone races or wants to squash/roll over everything to gain a couple of tenths of a second.

      @@StreetPete i hated my 29 wheels but i then hired a mullet orange switch 7 and i loooooved it, 29 is great on the front and makes it feel more stable and the 27.5 on the rear made it way more play full then my full 29, the 29 up front does not make it feel any less play full and in fact it made me into a different animal and my speed was insanely faster cos i felt safe and stable and the roll over was nice but the play full rear gave me confidence in the corners which i didn't like with a full 29, but 29 upfront made it less twitchy giving me more confidence to go much MUCH faster and the 27.5 rear giving me much MUCH more confidence in taking corners with speed and jumping on a mullet wow, i couldn't keep the bike on the ground and cos of the lower back and higher front makes it much easier to pick up the front so 29 upfront makes the bike way more play full then then even a 26 which is may older bike, i skipped the 27.5 and the new mullets are the most play full bikes i have ever riden in my life. If you live in england go to the forest of dean and hire a orange switch 7 bike for £60 for the day. I'm 6'4" i hired the L i hate XL and prefer bikes slightly too small cos i am a free rider at heart not a comfort rider and wow i have fallen in love with the 29/27.5 mullet

      @@yhoda145 Hiya, thank for the info, I live close to the Forest Of Dean actually. I have ridden 29" bikes but they just don't work for me, I like hopping about on the front wheel and manuals and wheelies and all sorts of playing about like that and 29" just doesn't suit me, my riding style or my height, neither does slacker bikes. I guess I'm stuck with the Cube Stereo 160 bikes for now because they are still 27.5 front and rear and they're not too slack at all. I just don't get in with the steering lock in the headset of the '22 & '23 Cubes.

    Really nice video and Steve's a legend... but the comparison is pretty irrelevant :) I have a full 29" bike where I can ajust the length of my rear, so the bike is very different (and favors different tracks) with the same weel size, and the differences are very consistent with what Steve is describing that is "weelsize specific" :) From my point of view, it's a shame that Santacruz opted for a longer rear on the 29 version, I love my 29" bike with the shorter rear, so I will look for a different brand full 29" bike ;) Steve's rideing racing style is incredible !!! very nice video :D

    • @santacruzbicycles2841

      A longer rear end also has advantages for ascending on ebikes. Peaty didn't cover it in this episode but when you have that extra power and you're winching up things it also helps to have a longer lever.

      @@santacruzbicycles2841 Thanks for de the reply, it made me rewatch Steve's riding again ! :D you are right, but... :) My complaint "between the lines", was not about the different well sizes "battle", it was about the Geometry of the 29" version and that was not as geard for technical descends and Fun as the MX version, the 29" geometry leans more on comfort and as you say maybe towards climbing. E-bikes, because they are heavier, the advantages of a 29": extra grip, floating over bumps and carrying more speed... are more important than for a normal bike, so I am looking forward seeing a 29" Ebike from SC with a geometry focused on descending and Fun, I am sure I not the only one and know is only a matter of time :D

    • @topspot4834
      @topspot4834 Рік тому

      Agreed ... Unfortunately they abandoned 27.5 and don't have a single one in their lineup. Santa Cruz is obsessed with speed, but neglected both shorter riders and people who are looking for something more playful they can take to the bike park. Even the 5010 and Nomad no longer have it, which I know has upset a lot of people. Their marketing claims to "have a bike for everybody" but that's certainly not the case, as they've alienated a good percentage of riders but insisting to shove MX down our throats ... Which btw nobody asked for. I visit a lot of different bike parks, and I can count on one hand the number of mullets I've seen out there.

    My friend put this bike together for his son and before I knew it he was done ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L When the son came to put it together he was surprised to see it was already done. All he had to do was take the bike to get air and be on his way. My friend did not have any major problems putting this bike together; small issue was putting one of the brakes on straight; however when the son got home he was able to fix it. The bike rides well gears move correctly; good bike for the price. Wrote review after the son took the bike. Sorry.

  • @bermroller
    @bermroller Рік тому +1

    Why did he say the 29'er has more pedal clearance than the mullet version? The geometry chart shows they are both have the same BB height. Did he unknowingly have the 29'er in high mode and the mullet in low, have more sag on the mullet, different crank lengths, or is the geometry chart not accurate?

    • @pgjudo
      @pgjudo Рік тому

      I was wondering that as well. They should have the same pedal clearance.

    • @janeblogs324
      @janeblogs324 Рік тому +1

      On FLAT ground the same.
      If the rear is rolling over an obstacle its LESS clearance, less tyre diameter

    • @bermroller
      @bermroller Рік тому

      @@janeblogs324 That only happens in a very specific scenario, when the rear wheel is going to contact an obstacle at the same time that the pedal is going to line up in the right cadence with another obstacle near the bottom of it's stroke, and only when the obstacle is lower than the slight difference in contact that the 29" wheel has will it clear the obstacle when the 27.5" wheel would not. That doesn't even seem worth mentioning if that's what he's talking about. Knowing the bike industry, I think it's more likely one of the other variables. It could even be he has a 29" rear triangle on his mullet and doesn't know it, or the mullet rear doesn't actually achieve the same BB height as claimed. The mountain bike industry has a pretty bad track record with precision.
