A wonderful look into the MYS. As a superyacht broker, I was fortunate enough to represent the largest sailing yacht ever offered for sale in the Monaco Yacht Show, the 294ft. S/Y Athena, now almost dwarfed by Bezos's KORU. During the 2023 Monaco Show, we were fortunate enough to interview the legendary designer of the largest most expensive yachts in the world for our UA-cam channel !
Right now I am busy thinking of creative ways on how I am going have a loan structured with a lender as I need to refill the 5 litre fuel tank on my Zodiac inflatable.
Why should I get rid of my gas truck when these mega yachts burn more fuel than I will in a lifetime? Not to mention the private jets, cruise ships, and exotic sports cars the rich indulge in. Sad but humanity will never go green to save itself.
Surprisingly the numbers end up being very very few of these and many many cars. A jet gets the mpg of an RV and most flights are a few hundred miles as the cost is significant.
Yet, still more than an average family spends on fuel annually...Most people will take 1 flight per year. Meanwhile, these celebrities take an average of 20-30...Then, take a heliocopter to their yachts...Don't pee on me, and tell me it's raining!!! Crew members are issued shoes that they can wear on the boat. They are not allowed to take those shoes ashore. The purpose is to keep dirt away from those expensive wood, carpet and marble surfaces to prevent scratching and stains.
You onviously have never been on a boat bigger than a canoe, before...? The staff has company issued shoes, that are meticulously cleaned...In fact, everything is constantly cleaned. Many, also provide "special services", in their contracts..."Anytime, anywhere, anything..."
The shoes they wear have never step off the boat. If you ever get invited on a yacht bring your own new, non black sole rubber shoes, and you too can wear shoes on the teak.
The problem with having a yacht over a certain size is that you can't always get into some ports for easy docking. And anchoring out and having to take the tender ride through sometimes rough water to get in is a pain in the rear. It's so nice to just step off onto the dock to explore the smaller towns and villages from a smaller yacht. And as for fuel, some areas have cheaper diesel than others, you just have to plan around that part to try and be where it's cheaper when you need to fuel up. But above all that the absolute most expensive part is when you want to haul out to do an extensive refit, you're looking at millions at that point. Other smaller expenses include provisions, dock fees (and some are fairly expensive), pilot fees for taking you into the harbor, pump outs, etc, etc.

If I don't buy a boat, but instead buy a home, then the boats jobs go down and construction jobs go up, etc. As an individual, the only way one can affect total jobs is either by burning money (thus destroying the latent demand it fuels), or by financing new economic activity exclusively through a form of debt that creates new money rather than redirecting existing stock piles of money. "Job Creators" is a deepity. To the degree its true, it applies to any and all economic activity, and therefore is a useless term. The spokesperson is explicitly claiming that employment activity would go down if boat demand went down, which is false. Very true - these boats create many jobs and livelihood for many people. For building them and considering the 10% of their cost used annually - for maintenance.
