- On October 4th 2023, the launching ceremony of the first Hellenic ship (HS) Kimon took place in the Naval Group shipyard of Lorient. Stéphane Frémont, head of Surface Combatants at Naval Group answers our questions during this milestone event.
Dimitris Mitsopoulos, our Greece based correspondent, explains why the FDI HN are important for the Hellenic Navy.
=====================
The ceremonial launching took place in the presence of Sébastien Lecornu, French minister of the Armed Forces and his Greek counterpart, Nikolaos Dendias. The Chief Executive of the French Armament General Directorate (DGA) and his Greek counterpart, as well as the Chiefs of the French and Hellenic Navies General Staff were also attending the ceremony.
The launching of the FDI frigate Kimon is a major industrial and symbolic milestone in the FDI program for the Hellenic Navy. The contract for the procurement of three frigates, plus one optional, was signed with Grece on 24th March 2022. All three frigates are in production. The first pre-outfitted block of the second unit HS Nearchos has just been transferred into the dry dock for the keel laying, and the first steel-cutting of the third HS Formion frigate occurred on July 12th 2023. The next steps for HS Kimon are the first sea going scheduled for 2024, and the delivery in 2025.
The HS Kimon frigate is a 4,500-ton class high sea warship. Multipurpose and resilient, she features high level capabilities in all naval combat domains: anti-ship, anti-air, antisubmarine and special forces projection, with unique capabilities against asymmetric threats. She benefits from Thales’ latest innovations in radar, sonar and electronic warfare.

Congratulations again friend for the new frigate.
Merci beaucoup !!! 🇬🇷 💪 🇫🇷 😉 👍
🇬🇷. 🇮🇱 💪
Thanks cultural neighbor! Got any cool stuff we can plug to this boat?
Greece and France always close friends since long time ago, sharing common values and rules of ethics.
The FDI is a tech masterpiece I really hope that the option for the 4th frigate will be activated soon.
Thank you Naval Group.....thank you France for your friendship and support!!!!
You are going to pay for them, this is not a question of friendship, it is a purchase. It's like if I buy a refrigerator and say to the clerk: "Thank you very much for selling me this wonderful refrigerator."
@@rrn7689 You are missing the big picture here.
France has signed a mutual defense treaty with Greece, the two countries have agreed to assist each other in case of an attack.
This agreement is taking place outside and beyond NATO!!!!
So this FDI and Rafale purchase from Greece can't be considered as a solo commercial deal....it is a part of bigger plan
I Love you People to Look from once Side....only🎉so the People never any know about behind whats did you See👍
@@LOLOVAL-os3pq The HAF pilots are more than excited to fly the Rafale...they think that the Rafale is a true game changer and it is rumored that Greece is about to place an order for additional 10 Rafales.....(34 in total in Greece)
5 months? wow, that is really fast. Naval group is knocking these out quickly.
damn that is a beautiful ship
Lethal platform
🇬🇷 💪 🇫🇷 😉 👍
🇬🇷 🇲🇫 💪
A beautiful and powerful design, if only we had the money to get 6-8 of them..and not just 3
3 + 1. One more later on during a new fiscal year. These frigates are very expensive.
We have the money. The thing is, that we shouldnt be spending all of it for war. We have other issues to fix
🇨🇵 🇬🇷 ❤ 🇨🇵 🇬🇷 ❤️ 🇨🇵 🇬🇷
A very good purchase for our navy. Hope that the idiots in our government will let our navy officers to use this expensive and very effective ship against our enemy. The Hellenic people didn't pay that ship just for foreign policy but to be used.
Every ship, and every single military equipment, is expensive to build, that’s how things are.
Greek dominion over Aegean shall continue
HN could do with a tad larger frigate of the HDI class . . . for e.g. a fleet of 8 brand new HDI class 5,824 ton (6,230 ton loaded) stealth guided missile advanced warfare frigate powered by iFuelCell™ RedOX-HYBRId® M-FEP system . . .
Why would you want a heavier warship when you can have the same thing lighter ?
GREECE WE LOVE SERBIA AND ISRAEL AND EGYPT
The most effective greek submarine of WW2 was French built , let's hope this frigate is just as effective
Μitsopoulos was against Bellhara. its a shame to speak for the new ship.
Mitsotakis is the Prime minister of Greece, Mitsotakis has to march to the tune of the decision makers, accordingly, Mitsotakis has to support the Bellhara program.
Usually and traditionally, a ship, especially a warship is officially launched when completed, not half built.
However, great thing Greece had the resources for modernizing the Helenic Navy.
Unfortunately, the thugs from Naval Group won the bid for Romanian Navy Corvette program, using false information in their offer. Moreover, at the deadline term they refused to sign the contract with Romanian government. They had no choice, because they falsely asured they have production facilities in Romania, as the requirement said the ships must be built in Romania, and also they had no expertise and means for the modernization of the naval base, another thing included in the procurement requirements.
Traditionally, every ship, even ligners such as the Olympic, have been launched “half built” as you say, the launching ceremony takes place when the hull is finished and launched in the water. The fittings take place latter.
