  • Yes, you can totally sum this up as "Magnet-shroom is a tool plant," completely invalidating everything I said in this video. I just thought it was a cool plant to focus on, and it's one I've wanted to cover since the start. Also, yes, I know the audio sucks.     The lack of zombies in PvZ2 that it affects shocked me. iirc just about every zombie in PvZ1 with a metallic object would be shut down by magnet shroom. But as you displayed there are a bunch of zombies with clearly metal objects that aren't affected. I guess I never knew all this stuff because I couldn't be bothered to use the plant to begin with which is a sentiment I reckon many others have

    Magnet shroom not working for like half of the magnetic zombies in the game I think highlights a bigger problem where a lot of plants are designed only with their world in mind, and don't have much interaction with stuff outside their world, even when it would make sense.

      I agree and disagree at the same time. While yes, there are quite a number of plants in both PvZ1 and PvZ2 that seem to be made with their world specifically in mind and nothing else (Sea Shroom, Plantern and Perfume Shroom come to mind), there's also quite a lot of instances where this doesn't happen and a plant has surprisingly quite a few interactions with other worlds, even when you don't expect it to. Such as:
      - Cabbage Pult, Kernal Pult, Melon Pult and Winter Melon (PvZ1): Can directly attack Snorkels, Ladders, Screen Doors and Newspaper Zombies without attacking their shields first/needing Snorkel to be chewing.
      - Spikeweed (PvZ1): Can pop Catapult Zombie tires, even though this would only happen in Survival which is the only instance where Catapult is not on the Roof where Spikeweeds/rocks cannot be used.
      - EM Peach: Stuns Bulls and Bull Legends in Wild West
      - Rotobaga: Can fly over water in Big Wave Beach. In fact it feels that Rotobaga was made more for BWB in mind than it's homeworld FC.
      - Hot Potato: Can melt Octopodes
      - Blover: Can blow away other flying zombies in other worlds such as Seagulls, Balloons, Swashbucklers, etc. It even has a weakness in Lost City where Lost Pilots and Lost Passengers will fall of their parachutes sooner when Blover blows. It also synergises with Dandelion where Dandelion will release all of her petal bombs in one go.
      - Chard Guard and Primal Peashooter: Can be effective in boardless lanes in Pirate Seas, knocking zombies back will push them overboard into the water.
      So, yeah. It's very inconsistant on whether plants will work well in other worlds or not.

      @@MustacheOnMars9 there are plants you didn't mention that are greatly hindered by their world-locked design. Instead, you choose to mention plants that literally nobody would even mention.
      -Kernel-pult: The main use of Kernel-pult is not to ignore the roof, that's just because it's a Cabbage-pult variant. It's for support.
      -Winter/Melon-pult: Same as Kernel-pult.
      -Spikeweed: Do you really only use Spikeweeds to pop Zombonis? That's stupid.
      -Rotobaga/Chard Guard/Primal Peashooter: This one is the stupidest. None of those plants counter anything in their own worlds. Might as well say "but sunflower works outside of the day stage and the tutorial".

    Reminds me of how angry i was that EMPeach didnt turn off Boombox zombie’s boombox or the arcade machine. They are quite literally machines in the same way that the far future ones are. Its really a shame to see how poorly old plants were treated whenever new content came out.

    My personal thoughts on Magnet Shroom is that it was a Leftover from the first game that was nerfed unnecessarily much. I remember that in pvz 1 it was one of the plants I'd always have a row of, somewhere right behind my wallnuts usually. It shutdown problems like prospector, ladders, footballs, and let you save your one-shotters for the bigger problems like the gargantuars

      just imagine the whole game was buffed in many ways, while the plant was left mostly the same, in a way its nerfed
      they didnt actually make it weaker, but the world around it made it weaker anyway, to the point nearly no one uses it

      But Magnet Shrooms was also literally nerfed in the way that it can no longer steal football/all star zombies helmet when it used to be able to do that in the first game.

    He’s still the best Dark Ages plant IMO but I think he’s a lot better on the first game as there he counters pretty much every tough zombie but on PVZ2 he’s limited to headwear and Punk Zombie. His plant food is pretty cracked in levels with lots of armoured zombies though, but then again, Shadow Shroom exists

      @@Telogor Fume Shroom is basically just Laser Bean with less range (still great though), and Sun Shroom is extremely overrated. Broken in Arena and Endless when you can boost him straightaway to get tons of sun but his sun production is way too low at the beginning in most levels, I don't see why he would be useful in Adventure outside of Dark Ages. With the amount of zombies thrown at you in later worlds, his sun production won't be able to keep up with hordes the way Reg, Primal and possibly Moonflower could

      @@GNVS300 I really agree with your point with SunShroom. With how fast paced PvZ2 levels are, 10 SunShrooms won't be able to fully grow at the end of the game.

    I always thought it was interesting how the magnet-shroom and the blover swapped in their strengths between the original and the sequel. They're both situational plants that only work on specific zombie types. Magnet-shroom was real good in the original, however blover was unfortunately very limited in what it did and it's 100 sun price tag and slower recharge didn't do it any favors. Then comes PvZ2 and while the magnet-shroom barely affects any zombies anymore, the blover is now the GOAT being able to insta-kill any zombies that are even just an inch off the ground (or even the entire screen at once back in older versions) for half the price and a very fast recharge.

    Fun fact: If the Excavator Zombie's shovel is actually made of gold, the Magnet-Shroom wouldn't be able to take it bc Gold in real life isn't magnetic.
    Then again, the punk zombie's piercings are magnetic even though most metals that are used to make piercings (Titanium, Platinum, Gold, and Silver) aren't magnetic.

      Also, there is a chance that Jurassic Buckethead Zombie's bucket rock is a magnetic rock, and can be attracted by Magnet Shroom. The sane would apply to Frostbite Caves Buckethead Zombie, whose bucket is also a rock.

    The main reason I don’t use it is because eventually, the plants you have will be powerful enough that you end up destroying the metal before the magnet shroom even can destroy it.

    To show Just how under designed Magnet-Shroom is, when I was flaying PvZ2 a few years ago I would encounter a zombie and just go "Magnet-Shroom would probably be good at this because ____" and all of the zombies I felt that way with wasn't affected at all.

      I felt the same about EMPeach too. It was supposed to disable every electronics in the affected range yet it can't do a single thing to boombox zombies and arcade zombies. Both of the two ultiliy plants have so much wasted potential.

    i feel so bad for magnet shroom. hes really decent in pvz 1 against many of the dangerous zombies like the jack in the box or ladder zombies but in pvz 2 i cant think of something that it can deal with effectively besides bucketheads and king zombies. popcap did him dirty

    Magnet Shroom against high level zombies from Penny's Pursuit is really overpowered.
    If you're playing Penny's Pursuit and you have level 3 - 4 plants and you're going against level 9 - 11 zombies, then magnet shroom is almost always your first go to plant to pick since magnet shroom essentially wipes out approximately 85% of any bucket head zombie's toughness, regardless of their level.
    Magnet Shroom is also really good against the pretty common (in Penny's Pursuit) Centurion Zombies too, since Magnet Shroom can also steal their galea helmets.
    Also this is just my opinion, there are probably people who have already said something like this (i'm not reading other comments at the moment).

    what I find so sad is the severe lack of mortar mushrooms in both games
    I mean in pvz1, sure, it's stopped updating, so nothing can happen anymore
    but in pvz2, they're still adding plants. I don't see how they don't know about this niche that should obviously be filled, I mean they don't even add sea shroom, for goodness sake!

      Ehhh sea shroom was... Bad... It was 25 sun, had a pretty long recharge if i remember correctly and it was literally just a puff shroom you could only put in water, and there is a mortar mushroom in pvz2, the spore shroom unlocked in neon mixtape tour

    magnet shroom was litterarly a silencer plant in pvz1( like kingdom rush for example)
    as it compleetly removed this or that gimmick of a zombie meaning that other plants that were countered by this zombie where still viable and it got rid of the problem of baisically bringing every counter plants to every zombie that had one counter,
    this would've synegised well with plants like walls that got absolutly demolished by gimmick zombies and also softened them up for low dps cheap alternative plants to finnish them off,
    honestly the combinations would've been endless and insentivised us to use other plants more,
    it's kinda veird how some internationall silencer plant wasn't in a game where hundreds of different plants and zombies were prenent as it could've helped some plants to not be so outclassed by some counter zombies....

    Quick tip: if the audio gets fucked up like this and you think it affects the video enough, you can convert the video into an mp3, pull that mp3 into any audio editing program, and then balance it, either manually or automatically. Some editing programs allow this as well
    My guess for why it happened is because you accidentally exported your voiceover as a mono track or imported it as one, this also has a few fixes, such as double checking your are exporting or importing as stereo, or if you lack the ability to do either, copying the mono track to the right channel to make sure your audience is getting a good stereo experience
    Audio is a massive part of videos, especially more discussion based videos like this, so making sure it's good is likely to boost engagement

    Only time I ever use Magnet shroom is on Penny Pursuits, especially at higher levels where my low level plants struggle to handle coneheads. Still quite a shame Popcap could have improved the zombie diversity being available for Magnet shroom to counterplay with. And I think All Star helmet not being magnetic could be their plan, as a fully plastic one isn't out of the question, thus explaining the removal of its interacton
    While I do think Acidic Citrus has a nice gimmick, I am expecting more on fire-based plants to handle plastic armor, and winter plants deal less damage to metallic ones ( since metal hardens when given a cold treatment ).

    Dang. Magnet was so nice in the first game. It could de-armor stuff, but you could also disable pogo zombies, prevent diggers from tunneling, and remove the ladders from ladder zombies (before AND after they placed the ladder on a plant). In harder modes, it was a great way to take out zombies that would otherwise get around defensive plants or over attackers.

      Magent Shroom would be a "must have" plant for whenever you see a Rockpuncher, because he's somehow more dangerous than a gargantuar.
      Immune to Primal Peashooter's knockback.
      Leaves a scorched tile for a short time after crushing a plant, something a gargantuar doesn't do.
      Attacks faster than a gargantuar (I mean, the amount of time it takes for him to crush a plant versus the amount of time it takes a gargantuar to crush a plant).

    I think the only way to push the armor removal gimmick and make magnet meta is by reducing the recharge/ make it instant recharge or pull multiple armor then recharge

    The saddest thing is that on my first playthrough, I never used magnet, even in dark ages, unless I was forced to. There was just no good reason to bring it instaid of, say, melon or repeater. Or iceberg and chard.

    Its sad how a plant like magnet shroom isn't really good outside of its home area. I wish it were like infinut where it could counter very problematic zombies in multiple areas of the game ontop of being a good wall.

    1. Magnet shroom is probably the most underwhelming support plant I can think of that you get from adventure mode
    2. Acidic Citrus also interacts with the BWB water by turning it yellow and probably acidic when the plant food is used
    3. Although a lot of the exclusive plants from PVZ2 Chinese edition are overpowered and would completely break any sense of balance, I think bringing plants like the asparagus machine gunner to the international version would be cool, even if it would be outclassed by other plants. Same with cool concept plants like the wax gourd or card throwing magic mushroom or even cryoshroom. With enough work you definitely could bring those over and make them useable in a fun way, especially acidic citrus. I used to use the lemon quite a bit when the arena came to the Chinese edition because I didn't really have much better plants and had that one specifically high enough that it was decent enough to make me win on the lower tiers fairly consistently if I wasn't going up against a p2w player with all maxed out plants

    Magnet shroom was so helpful in PvZ1 as a support plant. PvZ2 has so many more supports, and of course Magnet shroom just falls behind, especially because it is not only a weaker version of it's PvZ1 self, but overall both plants/zombies have grown in the arms race of power. Basics now have a 4th stage, which only the Dark Ages version works with Magnet shroom.
    Obviously, one way to fix it is to add more interactions, more things to take away from zombies, but I have another idea. The large robots in Far Future get pushed back by magnet shroom, possibly taking damage as well (like, from bolts flying out and such). This slows their march, and if they get EMPeached, pushes them back. 1 Magnet can push 1 machine at a time, and if it pulls something it stops pushing. What's really important, though, is at least fixing the metal objects already in game.
    Maybe a mod will? I trust modmakers more than modern Popcap...

    love magnet as a concept, and especially in pvz1. I mean you could neuter several zombies. Screen door, pogo, miner, and ladder had their abilities removed. Even just football and buckets armor removal was better as there wasnt really any major threats asides from the general hoard. You had a few that could get past defenses but that was often disruptive more than threats. meanwhile in pvz2 you have more threats and more disruptions. Dinos, lots of plant movements, potions, torquise skull, torches, barrels, pianos. Definitely should have more objects affected by magnet shroom. Excavators ofc being prime examples. footballs being back in there too. maybe the exploding labtop from Penny's Pursuit. Maybe have it disrupt shield robo's shield and/or arcade cabinet's spawning. And ofc surprised they didnt bring back more retros. Also personally fine with jurrassic being immune to magnet. not like your need it there.

    okay, I always go off about it, but Magnet-shroom has became one of favourite plants just because how adorable it is, he just looks so happy for some reason
    and because of that I use him anytime I have free seed slot in my strategy
    I'm that weird person that chooses their stragety partly on the design of the plants

    I haven't thought of this until very recently, but there is a plant in pvz2 that can remove their gimmicks, that being Imp Pear, which not only neutralizes zombies but reduces their health to 190, the same as an Imp. (I know it was added 5 years after Magnet)
    It's a shame too because there just really needed more thought around Magnet's surroundings and there is a plant that can do just that, although it is overtuned.

    Yeah this video really put it well. I've used Magnet a lot in PvZ1 but in PvZ2 I barely ever use him outside of Dark Ages and some NMT levels. Would really like to see them buff him at some point to grab more things.

    I feel like Magnet Shroom should have had some sort of effect when it comes to machines in Far Future. I left pvz scene a long time ago, so im sorry if this is wrong, but it could have been a mini stun, kinda like the newer levitator plant. It wouldnt be good to the point Magnet shroom becomes needed in Far Future, but just a little gimmick.

    There’s another reason to why magnet shroom isn’t a interesting support plant, bucket heads aren’t even the hardest type of armor that normal zombies can have anymore, just look at pyramid-heads, block-heads, fossil heads and brick head, they are considerably stronger than the bucket heads , making the basic function of magnet shroom not only more specific but also worse.

    it's kinda like how they nerfed spikeweed and lobbing plants. They used to ignore the shields that certain zombies had in PVZ1, like the screendoor, the newspaper, etc. But in PVZ2, one of the returning zombies is the newspaper zombie, who got buffed to turn into a rabid killing machine who runs at mach 3, whereas in the first game, he wasnt anything to worry about, so there wasn't really a need to ignore his newspaper shield. In PVZ2, you don't want him to get angry or else he tears through your defenses, and has a lot of health even without his newspaper, so what do you do? Plant spikeweeds and catapults! Except no, that doesn't work anymore, those eat away at his newspaper. It's just so stupid that they did this, man

    3:43 the animation technically wasn't unused since it was possible to break Excavator Zombie's Shovel (even if it had a ridiculous amount of HP). However, I agree that Magnet Shroom should've been able to to take his shovel.

    Magnetshroom is a great supporter for the magnifying grass - sun shroom combo. For 100 sun, you can get rid of bucketheads, which reduces the sun needed to kill them by 100

    I used magnetshroom on that Penny's pursuit with Circus theme boss and was really good there but i agree that it's too niche for most scenarios.

    Acid lemon was my favorite china version exclusive. I got it to level 4 cause it was so good, level 2 not only does extra damage to coneheads but also makes it fire twice, level 3 majes it fire 3 times and corrodes regular zombies (which means each damage does double for all zombies and gets hits 3 times each time it shoots). His plant food effect was good cause it was acid rain that affected all the board, however I believe it didnt stack so if you had 2 lemons using the plant food attack at the same time it wouldnt last longer or do extra damage. But considering that at level 3 you had a 125 plant that shoots 3 times and does extra damage to all sombies you knew it was incredible. I dont fully recall what the costume did but I did have the costum unlocked for him. (Think he just lasted 1 more second during acid rain)

    Magnet shroom doesn't even make sense for being a plant, as it has its eyes on the magnet itself, the none 'plant' part (I said plant in quotes because mushrooms aren't actually plants). The magnet and shroom are only connected by sitting on top of it.

    Aside from that not much zombies has interaction with Magnet-shroom, i just don't use it since it's ability is contradicting with another plant' ability; Sun Bean, which you wouldn't make much sun if the armor being removed

    Before the recognition of magnet shroom one of the version of pvz2, pancho wasnt even affect by the magnet shroom. And i was like very confuse, “pancho has a metal but doesnt attract the magnet shroom? How does that even make sense?!”

    Honestly, I feel like Spore-Shroom is a really nice idea that just...
    Doesn't work.
    The zombie needs to be killed by it.
    The tile has to be empty.
    It doesn't deal a lot of damage in quick succession or precise big damage that you can control (Which is why no matter what Citron gets outclassed by Coconut Cannon and such) by itself.
    If there's a Spore-Shroom clone on tile, partially eaten, it won't get healed by its' mechanic of spawning a Spore-Shroom on tile.
    Yeah.... Too many "If"s to happen.

    i think another problem is magnet-shrooms range, you sacrifice space on the frontlines just to remove buckets, and extra punk, poncho, and helmets. if you can afford to put magnet shroom and waste a seed slot for it, you should have a better option to deal with the buckets in the first place. What if he has unlimited range but extremely long seed recharge or magnet cooldown? replace one or a couple of sun producers with magnets and you can deal with the metals without sacrificing space for your offensive and defensive plants. although this has a problem with thw game itself, and that is plants contesting each other for the seed slots than finding their specialty to settle in and be a worthy plant when their opportunity comes in or simply make every plants specialty remarkable and experienced on levels against zombies, while the zombies in each world is mostly all about swarming you are creating chaos and pressure which may make sense for a zombie but damages the game itself and gameplay. i wish the zombies are more coordinated or balanced properly to fit their rank, a gargantuar should be the third strongest enemy just before minibosses/special bosses and the doctor himself, yet the gargantuar has low hp for its rank and easily countered often with annoying abilities while special zombies like the mic zombie and shovel being dominating and annoying than a contender that makes the world and experience different, special, and fun.

    I' like to see more flying/(semi-)aquatic plants, ether that be entirely new ones or ones from the ch. version.
    out of all of the plants there are only 6 to my knowledge (ones lillypr so theres technicaly 5).
    solar sage isn't even one.
    it clearly floats. that would've made BWB sooooo much easier to complete without Lilly pad

    I remember several years ago when I was playing through the lost city levels for the first time, I saw excavator and thought "This looks like a perfect place for magnet shroom" only to be baffled as this lad with an indestructible shovel just doesn't care. They did magnet shroom dirty in this game.

    Punk's head
    Yeti's head
    Poncho's grate when he has it
    Knight and Centurion's helmets
    Carnie Imp's helmet
    How I think I can buff magnetshroom by making it take:
    Excavator's shovel (duh)
    Fisherman's fishing hook
    Gladiator Gargantuar's helmet
    Boombox's boombox
    Bull's head
    Taking Bug Bot Imp and eventually killing it
    Chicken Wrangler's barbed wire in which he encases Chickens (and therefore stopping the Chickens from spawning)
    Maybe some other things, reply to this if you have any ideas

    While magnetshroom had a small number of zombies it could affect in PvZ1, the game itself had a relatively small roster of zombies to deal with compared to PvZ2, so magnetshroom’s niche ended up being quite valuable in a lot of cases. It’s a real shame that it’s niche got nerfed hard by its lack of interactions in PvZ2.

    One of my favorite pvz zombies were the door zombies. It had a unique type of weakness and defense, making you think about your choice. While i agree it doesn’t fit in most worlds, it could work in modern day. Yes, there are a lot of better choices, but thats the point of the game!

    If magnet shroom was given a buff so that it could affect more zombie types across all worlds, I bet it would become very popular very quickly, imagine if in far future you could rip some metal parts off of any of the robots they send at you, crippling them in some way.

    Magnet shroom is like the opposite of blover. Blover is only good against fog and ballon zombies in PvZ 1, but it is cheaper, and a lot more zombies are weak to blover in pv2, and can destroy knocked back zombies. Magnet shroom is good in the first game, as there are many zombies weak to it, but most of them were not brought back for pvz2, and very few were added.

    Magnet shroom is similar to homing thistle in that it has 0 self preservation whatsoever, even worse than homing thistle as it doesnt actually kill any zombies. This is made even worse by the fact that you have to place it relatively close to the zombies as it has a range.
    It'll definitely fare much better if it can affect more zombies and this may be a bit controversial but i think itll do better if its range is changed to a single lane but for the full lawn.

    In pvz1 magnet-shroom beat the s##t out of bucketheads,football zombies,doorzombies,pogo zombies,jack-in-the-box zombies,excavator zombies and ladder zombies. It was very versatile and it was a counter for really annoying zombies. But in pvz2 only counters high Heath zombies that you can kill with insta plants.

    I think it should be given the ability to pull any object that makes sense. There would still be zombies that wouldnt be affected that are a danger, octo/wizard/ect. I think it would still be balanced if it could do this so I see no reason for it not to. Another problem though is you dont get it until dark ages and by then you had to learn how to deal with bucket heads without the plant, you already beat punk head and pancho world, leaving you with no real reason to test it out. Should of been a world 1 or 2 plant although I do know progression is much different then it was on game release.
