  • This is Josh Mason's LS2 Drift Engine he will be using in his Pro Am 2010 Ford Mustang in the 2019 The Drift League series held at Irwindale Speedway. Josh plans to hit the 800hp mark with this engine. This is the second engine he has ever built. The first engine was a turbocharged 5.3 that hit the 650 horsepower mark. This time he is going bigger cubic inch, lighter block and staying turbocharged. Enjoy.

    Josh Mason proudly distinguishes himself not only as driver but a fabricator that builds 100% of the vehicles he competes with. Mason built a successful following with a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro that he restored to a not so typical classic car fashion. He wanted to build a classic car he could not only take to car shows but put on the track and drift as well. After multiple years of drifting in the Camaro he decided to take drifting to the next level. His next build weapon of choice was a 2010 Ford Mustang that got stripped down to a shell and built to become a highly competitive drift machine. It was such a competitive car that it helped him achieve his Formula Drift Pro2 License in a Formula Drift approved Pro Am Drift series in his first year of drift head to head competition.
    Josh Mason's racing career began at a very young age of 8 years old in a NHRA Jr Dragster. Then at 16 years old when Josh obtained his drivers license he was able to compete in a full size NHRA Super Gas Roadster. But in 2008 he discovered drifting at a local Long Beach event known as Formula Drift Round 1. Watching a vehicle obtain high speeds sideways inches from walls sparked a new passion that soon after turned into a addiction.
    Mason not only has been heavily involved in motorsports but also in film and content creation. He studied at the Los Angeles Film School and received his Degree in Film Science in 2011.

    This is how it should be done,clean,precise and good to see someone build one and use a torque wrench instead of slapping it together with a impact driver in their cluttered barn garage I'm sure it still runs great that way just really pleasing to see one done in this format

      You dont want the Cleveland block if going for big power like this. Ford Racing has an all aluminum 427 Windsor shortblock for 5500.00 through American Muscle. I believe that is the cost including shipping to your front door. The Windsor block is the same architecture as the 302 that came in mustangs in 1987-1993. They were also called 5.0 liter mustangs. Kasse racing makes a set of heads for it. P38 is the model number. The shortblock with these heads will make 750 horses all motor(no turbo,blower,or nitrous) and it even uses a street friendly hydraulic roller cam. The cost for the heads is 2500.00. By the time you ad in the cost for camshaft, roller rockers, intake, carb, etc......you should be at $10,000.00-11,000.00. It should last quite a while and is quite beefy including splayed 4 bolt mains. It revs to over 7,000 rpm and makes atleast 600 lb/feet of torque. I love that you dont need to add the complication of turbos or superchargers. One downside......it ain't gonna be a fuel sipper. It is gonna drink gas like I drink Budweiser......hard. Anyway I'm an old school Ford fanatic with best friends who are old school Chevy fanatics. Hope this info helps. Any questions? Shoot me a reply.

    Only one question, why does you need to assemble yourself this engine? isn't it brand new?, did you buy it in parts?

    • @chevelle19721
      @chevelle19721 5 років тому +2

      I'm guessing he started out with a stock engine, took it apart and had the machine shop bore it out a little so he could put bigger pistons in it. Then he put all new parts inside the engine to make more power

      This is not a crate motor. It is built from bare block up.

      I started out with a block given to me for free. After that I just pieced everything together

    How dose a LS2 with ls3 heads a cam and 15% underdrive pulley make 800 ??? Is the piston and rods forged ?

    • @Quantum-
      @Quantum- 5 років тому +1

      Aggressive cam, proper timing, hefty injectors and some boost is about all you need. But this guy is a competitive drifter, so of course his pistons and rods are forged. Who would build a boosted ls and not go with forged internals?

    • @masonthedriver
      @masonthedriver  5 років тому

      Turbo charged. Yes forged rods and pistons
