Great overview and a nice bit of variety! No matter what style of game you like, there is something here for you. Kudos to Sarah, who will no doubt be pleased with your ranking :) Totally deserved too! Both Soul Force and Briley Witch Chronicles are exceptionally ambitious C64 games, released within a year's span and in completely different genres.
Just downloaded 'Runn n' Gunn'. On the link you shared it's a part of a $1 bundle (sale at the time of writing) with 'Grid Pix' and 'Millie and Molly'. Felt like a steal so had to add a dollar or two :)
What a good year for C64, a lot of quality games still coming out. Incredible. My favourite of the year has to be soulforce, am a huge shooter fan and soulforce is right up there with the best of the system. Still cant quite believe am buying c64 games in 2021.
Great list! To be honest, "Soul Force" is by far the most beautiful shooter on the C64 ever. Far better than "Armalyte", "Delta", "Katakis", "R-Type", "Sanxion" etc. I'm so happy that this era still lives!
Sanxion and Delta were very good, especially Delta but the difficulty was set way too high on them (especially Sanxion). THANK YOU VERY MUCH STAVRO FASOULA MALAKA !!!!! Bastich thank you for all your hard work this year. Unbelievable the quality of games being made - love to see some different types of games being released such as perhaps sports, beat em up but i guess we are in 2021 and should be greatful for whatever we get.
You can't compare between eras, it's apples and oranges. Back in the day, dev's worked under tight time pressures, typically having a month at best to finalize the code for a game. They didn't have the luxury of countless years to perfect a game in their spare time.
@@BastichB64K Metal Dust shouldn't be a Top Ten C64 shooter (although it's good for an honorable mention), as it's effectively only playable in Vice. Given that it requires SuperCPU and 4MB+ of RAM. This means you can't even play it on the Maxi. It's effectively just a PC game.
WHO would have thought that thErE arE so many new game releases on our beloved C64 that we need such videos like this for orientation? Great video as always, it definitely helps me to decide to which games I will give a try. Thanx !
That shmup looks absolutely fantastic. Finally, the sort of shmup I wanted on C64. Music all the way and lots and lots of power ups. And lots of parallax. Yum!
Thanks for the overview of these great 2021 titles. If you like graphical adventures then I would also like to mention 'Babylon's Ark' which is part of the 'Space Collection' by BOBR.games published in 2021. The collection consists of four new space related games (Babylon's Ark, Flying Saucers, Space Firehawk and Space Planters) and comes on a fantastic looking cartridge with blinking star lights. A few remaining cartridges will be made available for purchase by Protovision any time soon.
Nice , i never got to try those .. text adventures are extremely hard to cover in video form as you could probably imagine .. although im still gonna try with a Top 10 text adventure game vid in the future
@@BastichB64K No, no... it's not a text adventure. You use the Joystick to move the protagonist around on a Space station and use the fire button to open dialogs and select your sentence to talk with the crew members. I think it is worth a closer look, if you liked the exploring part of Briley Witch Chronicles. Of the three other games two are action oriented and one is a puzzle game.
It's great to see so many high quality games being released for the good old C64, personally I'm a big fan of a great SHMUP like Soul Force and others. My own work on releasing a version of New Rally-X for the C64 is just as much about the journey as the final product.
@@carletonhandley No worries, thank you for taking the time and effort to make it. It's a really innovative concept for a puzzle game with the rewind feature. The game gave me hours of enjoyment (and a few moments of frustration!). Great gameplay, great graphics and great soundtrack. Because of games like this, I'm probably playing the C64 almost as much at age 43 as I was when I was at school. Will definitely check out Runn and Gunn :)
Graet presentation!:) Soul Force and (i have finished) and Briley Witch Chronicles are the best games of 2021' to me:D. I haven't bought yet Monstro Giganto;)
Great video and thanks for mentionning "Ninja Carnage". Glad you liked it (I'm the author). The overall video is very useful to point some games I (and people) should have missed this year. Thanks again for all this huge work.
Another grrrrrreat year for C64-fans!! Thanks Brendan for this interesting video with tons of information and inspiration! 🙏 You totally crushed it once again, man! 👍👍👍😉
I've kinda felt that 2021 was a slow year for C64 (compared to the last few were we got epics like Metal Warrior Ultra, Sam's Journey etc) but in hindsight there are some great games. This years highlights for me were 'Nixy the Glade Spirit', 'Lost Realms of Murkasada', 'Monstro Giganto' and 'Tiny Quest'. Still want to get 'Soul Force', 'Briley Witch Chronicles' and 'Runn n' Gunn'. 'Rogue64' might make it out in December but it'll be 2022 before I get to look at it.
Nixy definitely should be in this list, along with Leilei and others. Battle Kingdom and Arcade Daze are £1.99 fodder and have no business being in any Top 10.
It seems the C64 in 2021 has a lot of "soul" :) Thanks for signing out 21 with a great round up. Have a great Christmas dude. Lets hope 2022 has some more great new content coming our way!
What a great video to end your run for this year. Great selection and my choice was the brilliant Soulforce by Sarah Jane Avory, a bit bias because I'm a shmup fan but you can't argue with the quality in that title. Definitely a AAA title if this had been released in the C64 pinnacle. Thanks again to all your efforts this year 👍
Yeah i could have gone with either of the top 3 for #1 .. i liked them almost all equally but Briley is just the one for me in the end. Cheers and thanks for all your feedback and encouragement its appreciated , enjoy the holidays 👍👍👍👍
I figured out the trick for Outrage. I found it way more enjoyable by just simply turning on the health cheat. You have to farm for coins a little and buy extra lives. Then stock up on the smart bombs and the powerful laser gun and I was able to beat it that way. Very enjoyable.
I don't think you read the title or watched the intro 😂 these are all new C64 games , this bunch came out in 2021 but they all run on real hardware and they are mostly european made games but most work on ntsc c64s as well 👍👍👍 thx for watching .
Also, considering a 1.4 megabyte 3.5" floppy would hold 1400 kilobytes, I think it's amazing what programmers back then could squeeze into only 64k of memory !!!
The system had everything that any other 8-bit pc or home gaming system had and more, with the exception perhaps of native support for only 1 action button (as opposed to NES) and what looks like a challenging color palette 🎨. Why not make the video in January ? Just so you know, very special treats appear in December, Sam's Journey was Christmas Day, Soul Force New Years Eve, you're probably gonna miss Rogue and Eye Of The Beholder. 40 minutes long video and it's just wrong, it cannot be the best of 21 as we have a month to go, very odd.
Do you really think we'll see Eye of the Beholder anytime soon? I would have expected to hear something about it by now. I wonder if they'll try and get it released officially or if it'll be a free download. I remember them saying that it'd be a cartridge for sale (a while back) but not sure if they'll be able to do that. It's been a massive investment to get no return.
@@MentatOfDune Yes I think is very close ! No financial return for them, same as the amazing Bruce Lee Return Of Fury or Prince Of Persia but I will send money to dev.
