My personal favorite of these is in Super Mario World. You perform a super specific set of actions in the first level to manipulate the game's memory to warp straight to the credits.
Yes there are separate categories for glitched and glitchless runs. There are also often glitches that are so powerful that they have their own separate category
Yep, though glitchless is usually less popular than the unrestricted category. And sometimes there are degrees in both directions. Some games have a glitchless category that still uses specific glitches because ppl just don't enjoy running the category without them. But in the other direction is games like Ocarina of Time where there are like 4 different levels of Any% that all restrict different major glitches
Oh hey, been a bit since I saw a list with the first Outlast on it. That's cool, we should talk about that one more. I personally think it was a major contibuter to indie horror, along with Amnisa, that doesn't get as much credit anymore.
I think Two Worlds might have the most famous short-cut to the end of a video game... mostly because it's so funny that it ends up being a staple of lists like this.
Pokémon Red/Blue: start. Save game. Power off mid-save. Rearrange items. Exit room. You win. Ocarina of Time: do exploit to pull out ocarina while landing on warp pad after defeating first boss. Exit room with perfect timing. Get warped to final boss.
Might and Magic 8. The other games in the series still have speed runs in the hour+ for the most part, due to how those games work, and that even glitches can't skip certain requirements(Note, there are exceptions for the BAD endings, like 6s, which can be gotten quickly, but to get the real ending, you still need about an hour). However, in 8, the requirements are bugged, slightly. You're supposed to have to complete 6 questlines in order to access the ending. you don't need to do but 1. Gather the Heartstones of the Elements. That CAN be tricky, but it's doable with a low party run(Due to the mechanics of recruiting party from the world, unique to this game). Once you've gathered the Heartstones, go to the 'empty' house that will eventually have a mage who can combine them into a key to the endgame. Despite not doing the 5 other questlines that would allow him to be there, the game incorrectly flags him as being there, giving you the key to the end, meaning you have 4 mini dungeons, and one big one to finish. The game can be beaten in about 15 minutes thanks to this.
'Speedrunning', I feel, is an accurate description of these practices. 'Completion', though, is far from it. You're completing only a minute fraction of these games by doing this.
Yeah, and for runners, completion isn't the point lol. They have already played the game, perhaps multiple times. They want to see where the breaking point is
Loom. You can beat in the moment you're first in front of the titular loom by playing the "cut" song. Set's you right to the end of the game where you play the "cut" song, but after getting all the notes back.
I remember using an Xploder cheat CD to enable a float mode in Alundra, I floated over to the final area in the start of the game.. As a child I was mind blown lol
I beat farcry 6 in 20 minutes through a random glitch on a zipline that transported me right to the credits and I got the achievement for beating the game
When I first played two worlds I did this exact same thing but the dark boss never lost health. He killed the entire village and I got op loot before starting the game. I thought he just couldn't be killed or was an important npc so couldn't die. Idk
Does anyone know how to play two worlds now i havent been abke to find a way for years and its such a nostalgic game for me i just need to play it again
Using glitches/exploits and cheating are entirely different things, and shouldn't be treated as synonymous terms. Cheating involves making changes to the coding of the game yourself in order to give yourself an unfair advantage. Glitches and exploits are simply taking advantage of oversights in game design or unanticipated consequences of existing elements. These are freely available to everyone equally though some might take more skill than others, but this is no different to intentional complex mechanics in a game. It's like the difference between tax evasion and tax avoidance.
@@JeremyScott459 think of it like this. Using an exploit is like buying a product that has been accidentally reduced in price / mislabelled in a shop before the shop has the chance to realise their mistake (in this context, before the devs can patch it out). Cheating is going into the store with fake reduced price labels and putting them on the products yourself. Both have the same end result, but the latter involves you actively doing something dishonest to create the advantage.
@@darkmoon0219 except it's not. Wavedashing in Smash Bros Melee a perfect example. It's not considered cheating, and was in fact a hugely important technique to learn for competitive play. It is an exploit that exists due to an oversight in the game's programming that allows the technique to be performed. That's wildly different to hacking the game so that your damage meter never moves or so that your attacks instantly KO any opponents regardless of damage.
I'm not sure if this was a glitch but I once played a PlayStation game. I was on an early level & dropped the controller on the console nothing broke. I looked up at the screen & it said Iv completed the game then the end credits came up & went to the menu & everything was unlocked and completed at 100%.
Sammy Not a Video Game But The David Spade adult cartoon that was lost for 2 Decades binged all 13 episodes In 2021 hours before Betty White's Inevitable death no less
Backwards Longjump glitch was patched out in Super Mario 3D All-Stars. So if you’re playing Super Mario 64 on 3D All-Stars, then no Jess, you can’t beat the game in a matter of minutes.
have you seen some of the things people do for speedrunning? speedrunners have played through a game the way it was intended, they then play it way more to learn the exact timings/angles and that for how to get through specific parts the quickest. its not just that they're trying to only finish one playthrough as quick as they can and then be done with the game forever. they can spend hours practising the same small part of a game
Most people really only speed run games they personally love lol. And then they spend far more time with the game than a casual player can even fathom. I've seen a speedrunner spend 100 hours just playing through a meme category run for hollow knight.
My personal favorite of these is in Super Mario World. You perform a super specific set of actions in the first level to manipulate the game's memory to warp straight to the credits.
Do speed running communities have/keep separate categories/records for "glitched" vs non-glitched playthroughs? It seems like something they should.
Yeah they do
There are Glitched runs, No glitch runs, Spliced runs, and No Splice runs. And of course a mix of them
Yes there are separate categories for glitched and glitchless runs. There are also often glitches that are so powerful that they have their own separate category

Nostop, glitchless runs hold the highest prestige.
Please definitely don’t just “jump off any ledge” for the link to the past skip. It’s got to be that spot specifically
Otherwise you could do it right after you exit your house (I didn't knew of this glitch before xD)
You can actually EG a surprising number of places. That ledge just happens to be a really good one for an actually useful setup.

How do you even figure out the crash bandicoot glitch 😅 what did someone just leave the game unpaused or something
Something like that, or eventually digging into the coding and seeing where things can be manipulated l
could be a dev secret/easy way to test the final boss and it either was datamined or a dev told someone
That's what I was wondering
Crash2 was my first ps1 game 😊
I loved Spyro enter the dragonfly. Was one of the first console games I played and I played that game over 100 hours.

I think the video glitched, because the first time you showed footage from Sonic the Hedgehog at 0:18, Capcom was credited instead of Sega!

Yes speedrunners put 100% for completion of the game
There are many different ways to play a game. Should we tell you how to play yours?
The Ratchet & Clank speedrun glitch was world class! Shame it wasn't on here.
Number 2 frame perfect timing... Or a turbo controller, you'll "accidentally" zip all the time lol, that's how I learned that glitch.
Pokemon: Red and Blue can be beaten in literal seconds with glitches.
Loom. You can beat in the moment you're first in front of the titular loom by playing the "cut" song. Set's you right to the end of the game where you play the "cut" song, but after getting all the notes back.

Well, if the rumors are true, hopefully Toys For Bob's Spyro 4 will be a worthy succecer to the orginal/reignited triology
Outlast deserved to be on this, first room to final level in 30 seconds
11:14 Well ACKTUALLY. Hedgehogs aren't rodents :P
Uhh what?!! Spyro 2 was superb thank you very much 😅😂
What game is this? 0:28

Number 2 gotta go quickly
Huh, definitely done that Sonic one by accident and launched myself back to the start of the level.
There's lots of great Zelda games, but Ocarina of Time is still the undefeated King.👑
Watching this and her voice reminds me of watching the X games late at night in early 2000s
Did the crash 2 glitch make it to the trilogy as an Easter egg?
Isn't it possible in Pokemon Red/Blue to manipulate the PC in your bedroom to access the game code and transport the player to the end credits?
For links awakening its not any ledge. Its that specific ledge

How did you leave off beating Pokemon Red/Blue in 3 seconds!?
Should've added the massive GTA SA glitch to beat the game

Number 2; Gotta go fast.
Heavily editing out her inhales makes her sound like AI... or... did they switch to AI voices?
Sonic the Head Chog?
I remember messing up my gameboy color using pokemon hacks
Nice to hear Jess say my name! Even if she insults it first lol
