    Vanessa I'm totally with you on the airbag systems. I'm the shoulder injury guy, 9 months in more physio to do, more movement in my arm to achieve, but looking to ride after 10 months since my cycle crash, you know the story, broken arm, broken collar bone, dislocation of the shoulder with spiralling cracks up into the joint and now plated with titanium and plenty of screws.
    I have bought the full RST adventure pro x airbag jacket and trousers, plus a more summer like RST airbag jacket using the £12 a month in&motion computer system.
    Thankyou for pushing the alpinestars. I think you and I know pain, unfortunately it takes pain for people to wise up. But with your help I hope many others actually use these systems before they have to experience such pain we have been through.
    You're a fantastic ambassador for safety airbag systems and I love you for that.
    I'm now trying to get my brother to buy something like this.
    With my closet now stocked with airbag, I'm hoping to ride again very soon.
    Thank you, thank you Vanessa...

      Oh ouch. So sorry to hear your in the wars too. Sounds like you're making good progress. I so agree on the injury. Sadly so many have to have the injury before we think to wear the best kit. My cycling accident definitely made me come to moto with the right gear. Show your Bro this video 🤞💪

      Great to see both ridetest & crashtest review. I'm about to head to Lake Gairdner for the Dry Lake Racing land speed trials. Stinking hot this year, but rain last year meant waking to over 1/2 inch water over 12 miles of track! Just one thunder storm.

    I used my D-Air vest at ABR. First morning, first ride on flat, wet grass and 'not good' tyres, I bit the dust. Vest deployed and kept me well. I was still sore for the rest of the weekend (despite how gentle it looks in the video of me coming off), but I now won't do any road riding without it. At £250 a reset, I wouldn't recommend it for off road as it's a "once and done" deployment, but the turn around is quick (2 days). Also, my off roading speeds are nowhere near as high as yours, so currently just sticking to wearing armour. Vest was £750 (Dainese). I am looking for cheaper alternatives for the off road side of things though.

    • @TheGirlOnABike
      @TheGirlOnABike  6 місяців тому +1

      Oh wow, it’s amazing how once you have a deployment you really really had extra value in wearing it a. I may exact same. I wouldn’t get on that rally bike without it. I think I’m going to try and sort myself an airbag for my non-rally riding as well, as in a road slightly more streamline version of this, maybe the tech five or three. It’s definitely body saving kit. Totally understand you sticking with what you have for now.

    One of the better videos I've seen on airbag for riding. As an adventure rider, I would like to see more in-depth video series. Perhaps in a next video, you can show what areas will actually deploy and which Alpinestars model would be suitable for adventure riders. Thanks. Excellent episode.

    Great video, as always, Vanessa! I bought a Tech 5 last year for track racing. I wanted the 10 but it was sold out at the time. For this season I have ordered custom leathers with Tech 10. Will probably buy the off-road version, as well for my adventure trips. They are not cheap but a lot cheaper than air rescue and repairing a broken body.

    Great video. Very comprehensive. I own a couple of Helite Turtles (one for me and one for the wife) but now I'm living full time in the mountains of Mongolia (I'm an expat Brit). I ride almost 100% enduro around my home. In fact, we run a yurt camp with bikes for rent.
    I don't wear the Helite Turtle off-road. It'd deploy on all my low-speed tip-overs so would be fairly useless and, as you said, it might deploy too late when I actually need it.
    So the tech-air off-road looks like exactly what I need. No nuisance deployments and only deploy when I need it to. I'm looking into getting one shipped over from the UK. I have next to useless insurance which doesn't cover much so I need some physical insurance to mitigate injury from hard enduro type hazards (rocks and trees) at fairly low speeds.

    We've come a long way since the first attempts of airbags on motorcycles! 🤗 The first experimental ones basically launched the rider into a low earth orbit as up there, there are no obstacles (Except for the big one underneath), and now the concept actually works! 🥳🤯💪

    Thank you Vanessa, this is a wonderfully informative and helpful review. As someone who has only recently starting riding there are a bewildering array of options and advice available on everything from bikes to kit. Trying to filter that to decide what really matters, and what is worth having in terms of value is actually quite hard. Your insights on the value of having an airbag, based on your significant experience is hugely helpful to me and I'm most grateful to you for taking the time and trouble to share. I think I need an airbag...! Thank you!!

      Be careful when choosing. The electronic units require a $30/ month fee with free updates. Or one that offers the unit with a $600 one time fee, but no updates. That is on top of the $600 MSRP of the vest. Compare the cost and availability of replacement cartridges. Some are close to $100. Cheap insurance, but WHEN, not IF you get a false trigger and it deploys, you need to install the new cartridge (just blew $100). Finally, after 3 deployments, you must return the vest for inspection and recertification.
      The safety cord version works as well and as quickly. That is the route I am going.

      You are more than welcome, I am so glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful. The information @briangc1972 is incorrect. You do not need to return for recertification or anything like that, I have never had a false trigger or deployment and I do no know of anyone who has, this technology has been developed over decades and it is the most advanced technology out there. Feel free to read the full information and specifications on my website. The safety cord version is more likely to have false deploys as it usually attaches to your handlebars, and if you have the cord to short it will deploy and if the cord is too long you will hit the ground before a deployment. Please ensure to take all aspects into consideration. And if you have any further questions please feel free to inbox me or reach out to any other Alpinestars ambassador or representative like myself. Thanks for watching 🥰

    Great review and, yes, airbag vests/jackets should be mandatory. Presently, they’re still cost prohibitive, so a buyer’s incentive would be a great idea. The savings on healthcare expenditure to the individual AND the public would easily warrant a subsidy to buy one.
    One thing to note, which I did not think of until it was pointed out to me:
    When we “used to” buy protective gear, we go for snug fitting jackets, etc. With an airbag vest under your jacket, you’ll need some room for the airbag to expand outward. Thus, the jacket needs to have some room for the airbag to expand. Otherwise, the pressure might go inward. Sounds like a bad idea to me. Upsizing your coat might be needed.
    Lastly, I am wearing the Dainese Smart Vest. Since I’m mostly riding road/long distance, with the occasional off-tarmac (gravel or light forest road). The Alpinestars full vest has my attention, though. Might be worth an upgrade once I’m ready to replace my Dainese.

    Great information Vanessa! I’d asked about yours once when I’d seen it deploy and you had to replace your gas canisters. I’d thought about getting one earlier this spring and I wish I’d have got one then, I went down near 2 weeks ago now and got beat up a fair bit, but considering I was somewhere around 60 kmh and a bad rut in the road ended up taking me down I wished I’d had one then let me tell you. I am sure I’d have hardly felt that I’d went down in a couple days. I ordered a Helite Turtle 2 a week ago, it should be here near the end of the coming week. Honestly it scared me because I knew it could have been far worse.

    I have worked as a trauma medic in motorsports IOM TT, MotoGP BSB wsb & boring stock cars F1 for 5 years 27 years in A&E riding for 27 years . I can tell you to forget about level 1,2,3,4 100 armour. Thy don’t work otherwise your car would have armour. Your spine is double s shaped so why have a straight back protector. An airbag will conform to your spine and actually protect your spine. Airbag are the best way to prevent injury and death. The failure for airbags is the failure to consult drs , they are not covering all the vital areas, so straight bones are easy to repair, joints are not especially ligaments, pelvic fractures are a disaster. So even the airbag trousers do not cover the pelvis and knee. Airbags need to flow air so manufacturers make them a mesh, bike manufacturers put pelvic airbags in all petrol tanks speak to biker drs who have sen injuries

    Never thought about an air vest until yesterday and saw one at my dealer.. Agree, a tether is not my cup of tea so an automatic vest makes more sense. Two questions; first, I live in Texas and its hot - like can be over 100 degrees (40C+) and I travel around the world -- can you wear this without melting? Second, if I do 30% off-road and 70% on road is the model 5 a better fit for me? I like the technology better on the Off Road - more deployments before replacing and if I am somewhere in the world away from civilization -- I need that. Last, and third, sorry, can I fly with the jacket and air canisters?

    • @Coldgecko
      @Coldgecko 6 днів тому

      Sorry, the reason I asked about the model best suited for 30% off and 70% on road is because the off road model looks so bulky to wear and walk around easily... Wish they put the same tech in the model 5 as the off-road.

    My Alpine Stars Tech Air 3 broke after 3 rides. Will not turn on. Alpine Stars has not fixed it and they have not sent me a replacement either. It's been 4 months waiting. Obviously they are not a good company and they do NOT care about the safety of riders that purchase their expensive safety products. I will never buy another Alpine Stars product ever again. I bought my vest because I thought it would help my safety and I went with Alpine Stars because I thought they were a good company. I've learned my lesson about them now.

    I use the Alpinestars bionic pro V2, but after a very light crash I chipped my elbow due to the high point load on the honeycomb plastic material.

    Great rundown of features and benefits 🙂And a compelling argument for the Alpinestars airbags for sure - Well done - I've previously contemplated a Tech-5 or Tech-10 for the road (only) - But cant help but think that the armour of the Tech-Air Off-Road looks superior to those? Is it worth buying an Off-Road for road riding (and running in Street mode of course) given that it appears it might offer superior (and broader crash scenario) protection??

    • @TheGirlOnABike
      @TheGirlOnABike  6 місяців тому +2

      that to be fair as a really good point, the off-road version certainly has considered more bass level armour before the airbag infrastructure is factored. You’ve got the CE certified armour in it the big chest plate back et cetera. And it does also have the road mode. I guess the price point is going to be deciding factor in that, but it doesn’t sound like a silly idea. That’s for sure

I wish they'd make the built-in lithium battery easily removable and reinstallable - airlines (inconsistently, even within the same airline I should add) are inclined to say you can't put ANY lithium batteries in anything in your hold luggage. Is it possible to combine this airbag with warm clothing? I’m thinking especially about the arms. I live in Norway where it can be cold riding without woolen inner layers. This airbag has several nice specs compared with the tech 5 vest, and can be combined with both street, gravel and ligth offroad on my African Twin. But is there enough space underneath the airbag for warm clothing?

    • @TheGirlOnABike

      I would say yes absolutely, you can treat the airbag like you would a normal body armour. This means you could very easily wear very cosy Warm thermals underneath. I did also wear a heated jacket over the top of my airbag for a couple of the very cold mornings in the Africa Eco Race. If you watched my Eco race series which is in the process of coming out you’ll see more about this. But I definitely believe you can combine cold weather warm clothing with the airbag

      Hey good questions - the Tech-Air off-road has got a certain degree of neck protection factored in, the reason for this is because when airbags were made mandatory at Dakar, no airbag system is compatible with a neck brace and so it became apparent that they needed to develop in this area too for the Off-Road system. i don't know the exact percentages of the neck protection... the Tech-Air 5 is probably a better recommendation for road riding (and a tiny bit of off road like fire roads for example) since the Off-Road is more of a performance product... both could work but TA5 is more suited for road riding... hope this helps

      I guess the answer is that with the combination of the airbag, you don’t need the protection to be even higher. A 95 is it reduction in the impact of an accident is something that speaks for itself. I can definitely vouch for how much protection it gives you. in terms of the resist abrasion resistant material, this is not desired for tarmac and so you wouldn’t expect the heat and lack of airflow element of that sort of material. • @brentjaswinski
      @brentjaswinski 6 місяців тому +1

      @@mengaw-yong2490 We're happy to help explain where the 95% number comes from... and to be precise, it's up to 95%. It all comes down to how it relates to passive armor. For a CE Level 1 rated passive back armor piece, it's mandated under standardized testing that no more than 18 kN (kilo Newtons) be transferred through to the rider upon impact. What is a kilo Newton? It's the equivalent to ~225 lbs of force. So, 18k N is about 4050 lbs. For simplicities sake, we'll call it a round 4000. For a CE Level 2 rated passive back protector, it's no more than 9 kN, or about 2000 lbs. So already going from Level 1 passive to Level 2 passive, you're getting twice the amount of protection. Airbags have CE Level 1 and CE Level 2 ratings as well, but the threshold numbers are different. For a CE Level 1 rated airbag, it's mandated that no more than 4.5 kN, or about 1000 lbs of impact force be transferred through to the rider's body. And for a CE Level 2 rated airbag, it's no more than 2.5 kN, or about ~500 lbs of impact force. However, despite these thresholds, Alpinestars does not aim to just merely meet them. Alpinestars has a full state of the art research and development center in Italy where all product testing takes place, and the majority of all Alpinestars airbag systems transmit less than 1 kN of impact force to the rider. Alpinestars however cannot certify their own systems. This is done by a third party, where under repeated testing, the systems transmit less than 1 kN (0.9 kN on average to be exact, or about 200 lbs). So this is where the 95% reduction in impact force number comes from --> 200/4000 = 0.05 --> 5%. 1 - 0.05 = 0.95 --> 95%.
      To go in and explain the math here in a review video would probably go over most viewers heads, but we appreciate you digging deeper.
      Alpinestars is pioneering an incredibly advanced protection technology that motorcyclists prior to 2009 (first publicly used in MotoGP competition) have never used or benefitted from before, and without any sliver of a doubt, it's made motorcycling (whether on-road, on-track, or off-road) safer for the rider.

    I was looking at the AT5 for my street and highway riding but this looks to have more neck support though a little less for ribs but one can take the electronics out to wash it and change the gas cylinders so considering this one now

    Fabulous video of a great piece of kit Vanessa. You really cant be protected enough nowadays, and why wouldnt you wear this? Cheaper than a long stay in hospital thats for sure. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

      Yey thanks so much for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it! We only have the one body so we must look after it, and the peace of mind this kit gives is priceless!

    Vanessa, thanks for sharing your experience with the product. I'm torn between tech air 5 vs tech air off road for my ADV bike riding 50% road to get to green lane/50% offroad/green lane/gravel/trail riding but nothing seriously offroad. Already have tech air race for my race suit so will buy 1 extra airbag to cover that need - can you let me know which is the better fit in my case? Thanks in advance.

      I would say the off road will cover you in the road for sure and has the off road mode. However the tech 5 would not give you as much protection off road as it has less armour etc. My gut thinks go for off road and then it's better protection offering 🙏

    Very interesting. I definitely like the idea of it. This is the first one that looks like it's properly sorted and fit for purpose. I totally get the 95% reduction in impact vs wearing nothing. It would be great to understand how much more impact reduction it offers than good quality traditional body armour. I generally wear Ascerbis X-Air (the older version) and the number of crashes I've had where I've thought, "This is going to hurt" and then it doesn't is quite incredible. Even landing flat on my back from about 8 foot in the air (only a nice soft grass landing) I just winded myself. I think if manufacturers like Alpinestars could properly quantify how much better an air bag is, it'll tempt more people to use them. At the moment, I really want one, but my current body armour cost £200, is machine washable, has zero ongoing costs associated and (touch wood) has thus far offered excellent protection in a variety of instances where I've run out of talent. The leap to spending $1000 on the vest and budgeting for gas cylinders and bladder servicing has me leaning towards waiting for the market to mature a little and the costs come down a bit. That said, if someone wants to give me one to try, I'll happily take it! 😅

      It definitely is quite an expensive option but we only have one body that we have to live in forever, so to me personally I think that the price tag for the peace of mind knowing I can walk away from a bery high percentage of offs is enough for me. Hopefully over time they will become more affordable but right now there is only a small market and they are using the highest quality technlogy available
