Are rider airbags the best crash protection?

- I'm testing a rider airbag vest in all off-road conditions to see if it will deploy without crashing, then push the limits further to find what point it will deploy and how much protection it will give me.

Great to see someone test it off-road. Looking forward to the off-road / Dakar version to hit the market later this year. That thing saved Chuckie in the 22 Dakar..
Adam, I fully commend your commitment to that test. It’s not easy to intentionally take a fall. The video captured it perfectly. I could literally see the point of inflation when you were about 8-9 above the ground. And the audible “pop” was clear.
Glad you didn’t hurt anything else in the process. We are the same age and injuries just plainly take longer to get over than they used too. 😂
You took one for the team. Thank you! I'm sold on the vest.
What a tech review, mind blowing 👏
Last year a deer slammed into me when riding. If I had this vest on, I probably wouldn't have broken ten ribs, my collarbone, and my shoulder blade. Which would have allowed me to use crutches for my broken leg instead of spending eight weeks in a wheelchair. Think I might buy one.
No frickin way your 48 that’s insane I thought you where like 28-32 but your almost as old as my dad and I’m 22 that’s crazy amazing job staying in shape and good health especially for a hard core rider I hope to be just like you when I’m older!! Thanks for all the amazing advice lessons and motivation you provide to the community
Reality is, Riding offroad bikes is a fountain of youth. keeps cognitive sharp and whole body work out. cardio everything.
I couldn’t contain my laughter watching this one 🤣🤣
Beautiful riding and the best ad for the vest.
"the dude's in a bit of trouble, let him concentrate..." Oh man, funny AF Thanks for this one brother, yeah, been thinking of one of these too.
I've had one for a while now. Just a bit hot in summer , but worth it if I come off
Great riding. Jacket is cool but I fall off my bike more than once in a day of off road riding so I would need to carry a lot of spare gas cylinders 😂
Alright, so it looks pretty damn safe it won’t deploy if you would lose balance while stationary and fall with your bike
These look interesting, I could probably sell my foam pit now.
Never had access to a foam pit. I had a goal to get used to a flip before I turned 40, so that I didn't have to learn on the trail. Ten years later and I've still never seen one in person.
Hi Adam any follow up on the War horse, after arriving in Australia? TA Duke
adam, at 48 you're still riding like someone who is 18 :) at 35 I have a lot friends ditching a lot of hobbies because they say theyre too old, but not me ... staying young at heart makes life worth living
I've been riding since I was 10, now 60- I will never give it up.
Got my first dirt bike at 40, i'm right there with ya, only older not old
Yea it is like , " sorry man i cannot ride today i got to do ( insert excuse here)"It is mind-numbing. Someone should make an app for local rider to get together and ride. Who cares if you are friends. WE are all friends when we ride.
@@wraith511802003 If you're ever in west Michigan I'll ride with ya. There are some FB groups dedicated to it as well.
There are still people in their 60s and 70s at some motorcross tracks, it really depends how active you were when you were younger, no way can you go from a couch potato to a MX rider at any age, it is just too much on your body. Adam's father was a very good rider and he rode till his late age as well. Adam is a legend.
Adam, 48 years and the self preservation is high. LOL !
I love your videos and adventures at 56 years old and getting another ADV bike soon. Thanks for everything!
Good for you Dog !!
55 and just got my first one.
Off road airbag technology is coming, and it will literally save lives.
Lol... Its alredy here
Already here. All Dakar ideas wear them.
@@alrightdave6135 I'm aware, talking about publicly available. Alpinestars was supposed to be public back in November and still isn't out.
Just like helmet first get people to wear them... That's the challenge
Maybe A* will finally have their rally suit out for consumers this year.
Top video, I have a Helite E Vest that you wear over your jacket. I came off a few months back and it had deployed before I hit the tarmac. This design stabilises your kneck and goes down your back protecting the base of your spine. All I can say is that like you I am sold and now i will not ride anywhere without it.
All I had to do to reset the vest was to buy a new cylinder and it was good to go again. The bike was a bit more challenging 😮
😅
Tried the alpinstars one for a day of street riding/touring but it wasn't for me. Having it under my jacket i felt very constraint and started affecting my blood circulation. I ended up buying a Helite airbag vest that goes over the jacket and it was much more comfortable for me.
@@cgeo3380 They are made to be worn with tech air compatible jacket.
Only time my Helite deployed was when I did not fully lower my side stand before parking my bike fully loaded with camp gear.
Sounded like someone let off a shot by my ears and then I looked like the Michelin Man.
Probably the most entertaining YT motorbike channel - thanks for your attitude, it´s so refreshing!
Hi Adam, hands down one of the best and funniest motorcycle gear product tests I’ve seen. Love your work as usual. I think it’s convinced me to buy one.
To be honest. I don't even care about the vest. I am just here to see you rip🥵
Mate you are insane! There is no way in hell I would purposefully send myself over that monster of a log to see "if" the airbag deploys! Glad it did.. so we can see u make more such wicked videos!
Thanks for the test! I own the vest for 2years and i was scared of accidental deploy on my F850 GS but now I see I will be just fine 👍😀
What a great real world test!
Thank you for sacrificing your instincts of self preservation for us viewers! That's no small task!
Sitting here watching this, I am just over 2 months since i shattered my shoulder (4 part proximal humerus fracture) and I am absolutely sold. The healing process sucks, especially as you get older. Curious how this works in other environments? Could you use this for skiing as well or is the algorithm only for motorcycle applications? I want one for every sport I do now. Truly, I'd pay just about anything not to go through this again.
If you watch his crash the air bag didn’t protect any of the areas he landed on. He landed on his hand forearm and knee. The air bag did not help protect him in any way. Not that an airbag won’t help in some circumstances but injury statistics show it won’t help very often!
You can wear padding on those spots, and most people do. But the areas it protects are the vital organs, and the spine. It's not meant to be the only gear you wear off road.
It'll help me when it really, really counts
What happens in a race when you have a simple tumble un-injured but now you have an inflated balloon around your body…..
If it deployed on low speed crashes in offroad you need a new vest every day you hitting the trails. I think good body armor wil do the rob. If your not a toby price dessert racer
“ I’m going to remove my goggles so you can see the fear in my eyes” lol my kids were laughing. My oldest son who is 11 years old told me “ he is a cool dude. “ 😮 lol. We love your videos. Sometimes I can’t understand your accent lol but is all cool. Greetings Saludos 🖖 from Texas.
Thanks for the video Adam, I'm home recovering from 5 broken ribs on my Yamaha T7 and I was reading up on this airbag. The people in the store have told me that there is only circuit and street mode, and I have been a little undecided. Now after watching your fantastic video I am more sure to buy it. Thanks for your videos!!
Seeing the Tech Air in action, impressed. Alpinestars 👌👍
48 and hucking it over the bars for the video, love it
I do wonder how much of a sweat pit they will be.
I got the all natural airbag, more commonly known as a gut
My you sure can ride a motorbike my friend. Whilst doing so in your PYJAMAS. 😂🤣😭👍👍👍
Aussie summer though? Under an Adventure jacket would ir add heat retention?
Always use mine every ride but i turn it off in offroad fearing it would deploy prematurely on gnarly stuff. BUT seeing your test NOW I am confident it will not. Will leave it on all the time
I hope they pay you well, because you did a stellar job advertising this vest. You proved it works when it has to, and only when it has to. Loved it.
I’m sold, however local dealer just told me not to buy this model for offroad use as it’ll blow up even on a road bump. I’m confused now…
Well this clip is product placement at its best really. He is not going to say don't buy it.
I have the helite tethered vest, I use on my daily Melbourne commute, thinking of using this on my DR650. My thinking is this would be a lot less bulkier than dedicated hard armour obviously I think I’ll need a few extra canisters. Anyone else gone down this road, love to hear yr experience.
Maybe have that thing fill with some kind of super helium so that when it deploys you never hit the ground. Probably have to have some kind of tether attached to the bike though so you don't float away.
That video was a riot! 😂 and you informative. Beautiful farm!
Best possible test and hat’s off for the commitment.
Thanks Adam, this series has been enjoyable and useful. This channel is one of the best around for adventure and dirt riders and being a WA just tops it off 👍
I had one of those airbag vests as a street rider. Smacked an suv that pulled in front of me. Played Superman cartwheel in the air to pavement. Only partial fracture to one vertebrae. No surgery. Should have been in a wheelchair otherwise. Plan on lightweight off-road dual sport when I finish healing. I'll be wearing an airbag vest. Maybe one of mechanical tether styles until the recharge fees come down on the electronic. But that Alpinestars tech air is my pick of the electronic vests.
Hey Adam, the airbag tech looks awesome for Finke and fast desert races but a question over hydration. Do you know if it is Cambelbak compatible? It looks like you'd need room for it to deploy and the chest strap would be in the way. Cheers.
Very impressive. You gave it a great test, riding the PISS out of those bikes
epic video mate .. i was thinking of buying one .. only thing that held me back was if i hit a pothole and it accidentally deploys.. Then I found your video ...I'm buying it now!! BIG THANKS MATE !!
Man, you ride the stuffing out of your Tenere. Mine is lucky if it jumps a kerb on the way to the shops... At least I know what it is REALLY capable of. (In the hands of a rider somewhat better than myself....)
The air bag may save damage to your chest, organs, ribs etc but if you freeze frame the fall you can clearly see your first point of impact was your right forearm followed by your head. So you you still end up with broken collarbone, shattered elbow, neck injury etc. Do the manufacturers produce one which covers the arms?
Now the big question. Were you wearing this on your recent.big australian adventure loop? Dakar riders now have to wear air jacket so I’m assuming if they can ride for 10 hours a day for 15 days it must be somewhat comfortable. I’m considering one of those. Anything that can prevent injury I take it
Thanks a lot for risking yourself and actually deploying the bloody thing in a real scenario! But I wonder how it felt, did it soften the fall a lot?
Interesting. Seems like very decent protection for offroad/ Adventure riding.
Curious how it works with a Leatt brace on tho...will it blow my head off?😆 Or is there still a bit space between the brace and the helmet...
It's more than decent protection. All the Dakar riders ride with one on these days 🙂
Did you collect your goggles though …
Would be interested to hear your take on this versus a standard protection vest (astar, fox, revit,…)
Cheers
I have the Alpinestars Techair 3 and it only has the street mode. It works perfectly for my off road riding , moooooore ligther than yours. Great protection systems
I'd set that thing off ten times a day🤣. $1,000 and you have to send it in and pay $200 to recharge every thirty hours of riding😱. Fill it with gunpowder and there will be no pain.
Appreciate the time and effort put into this. I was worried about spirited riding. This helps.
Great jacket, incredible tech. Taking the fall requires big fking b___s.
Cracking review...well done! No other reviews like this on the Internet. Made me buy one.
Risk my life to batteries and modern electronics and dodgy phone apps that constantly update and release buggy at any time. No thank you. I’d rather have mechanical that won’t fail due to computer bugs and what is the cost to get the air bag reset? Have to ship it all the way back to the manufacturer because DRM or deliberate programming to make it not user serviceable to reset? Printer manufacturer locked cartridges so they can charge twenty times the price for replacements when the market was not deliberately locked down by manufacturer programming?
I wonder what that would in a fast enduro littered with pokey mesquite thorns! Look up that last national AMA enduro in Turkey TX. Plenty of footage. Say you eat it in a early test. Can you uninflated and rearm it. During and enduro I've been on the ground multiple times in a day. Its great tech though! Might suck when the going gets hot though. This would be great for a street commute or street riding for sure.
I watched the moment of impact frame by frame... I think it deployed a bit late, your helmet has already touched the ground and was deflected a bit sideways. The vest is supposed to also replace the neck brace.
👍 Can’t get over how perfect the terrain is there! Is that typical throughout the year, or is the lack of underbrush and foliage just seasonal?
I can't buy one of those. Would need to carry a couple of refills everytime I go offroading HAHA
Your commentary in this vid is PURE GOLD!
Since you are sponsored by alpinestars I would expect you to say you are sold on it 😊
Talk to the avg Joe who falls most days out and has to reinflate the thing.
Hi mate do you actually wear top armour when you ride?
I only seem to see knee pads... Or do you have low profile armour?
when you talk about the tech not popping the bag..er vest. all i can think of it the short video of a guy in a very pricey car crosses the crosswalk before coming to a stop. and the old lady hits his bumper with her large bag. and the cars air bags pop open causing thousands of dollar's in damage to the car.
high tech beat by a old lady, and her large hand bag.
What a test! Not only of the technology. But also of self-preservation. Hats off to you, Günter/Nürnberg
I really want to buy you some elbow pads. I get nervous, having shattered mine.
Did you say there was the cartridge or anything in back of this? I thought you did and if so that would cause leverage to break a backbone. Surely it’s not near the spine but it really needs to be in the front or on the shoulders
Sir, you are crazy. Love it tho! And how the fuck are you 48?!
1 deployment 170bucks😅
What happened? You wouldn't believe if this wasn't recorded...good call Adam :)
Great video Brother! Thanks for being willing to take the hit to show us how well it works.
IN-MOTION on a KLIM vest saved my old body literally +6 times.
In-motion has 3 ride options, street, adventure, and closed track.... love it, won't leave home without it 😛
Tested and tuned at Dakar and MotoGP 😁
Question : you can fall only once ?
Then you run with a deployed jacket ?
Will you be testing the off-road version?
What about trees and cars? I could be tottaly upright when hiting those.
My airbag vest went off after I bent over to check my tire pressure and then got back up to continue driving.
My Back was bent and i was wearing a jacket when the airback vest went off, the experience was painful but after two days you don't feel it anymore.
Cost to repair the vest is 180 euros the first time but the second time is 300 euros.
I learned that you should immediately turn off the vest when you get off the bike.
This is very interesting as I get older and haven’t started to back off twisting throttle!
Thanks for this video! How much effort does it take to reactivate the vest?
ARIEMANN whenever i talk about my CR i always quote your line from velocity disorder in your voice. A 2001 CR250, one of the best dirtbikes ever made.
Hey adam the real test would be wear it down the pub and pick a fight with the biggest dude in the pub ha ha.
But what are you supposed to wear over it, such that that doesnt rip apart with the first insignificant crash?
Well I always wondered about this and your test has me sold on this product
My mate got knocked off by a car, right in front of me. His inflatable jacket saved him from serious injury, only had bruises. This sort of technology is a game changer.😊👍🏻
That's awesome, thanks for the review. I was wondering about these. Glad to see you still have your CR. Love the old 2 strokes
You must have had it set on california street mode at first...lol
Thanks for the no nonsense no sales fluff honest test. What a game changer. If you are young or old you should seriously try to budget this into your riding gear setup.
The kind of testing we have all been waiting for.
love your vids…but that tighty whitey kit oooofff 😂
Is the off road V2 not released yet? Was meant to be October 22?
Your the man👏👍 thanks for putting yourself out there like that. Your testing 100% sold me on it. I will be looking to get one soon👊
Can’t wait for A* to finally release the RallyAir
Sold 👍🏼
Thanks for your review and taking a spill for us Adam, love your work mate 🤘🏼
Alpine Stars stress to read the user manual, one of the caveats of its use is it's not for Enduro or Off Road riding, and that after deployment it has to be returned for service. It also needs charging every 30 hours. Street is for street / good gravel road use only (in big red type in the manual), Race is for 100kmh+ track use. Great video and no doubt great product for road and 'Adventure' riders when maintained properly.
Great to see this topic covered by an adventure rider!
If there is any way for you to upload files in 4k, I'd greatly appreciate that though
Excellent, but this means you have to wear your bag back loose (or not at all) to allow airbag deployment; it would be nice if AStars could sell an optional waterbag bundle to use along with this airbag jacket. I'm seriously considering this; I ride dunes often, so carrying water is necessary. Thank you for the review.
awesome. maybe this will make mom feel a little better lol.
