Your riddle!!! 😂❤ oh my gosh. If it is what I think it is, I just did it a year ago and am still getting used to things, but it’s wonderful. Biggest piece of (unsolicited) advice: your to-do list will feel never-ending (even more so than before), but try to just be present with it and take it one little piece at a time. 🏡👀 wishing you, olive, and your plants so much happiness in your next chapter!
You should repot your orchid. That moss will eventually get stale and orchid roots need to breathe which they can’t do too well stuffed in that small moss filled container.
Keep your personal life personal, girl. You do you! This is your job, The internet does not need to know all the aspects of your life. You have every right to not share. Much respect!
You are moving to a fixer upper with a garden? 🤔 I think you would be such a great mom, the way that you take care of olive and the plants show how nurturing you are, and the way that you describe your dream life 😍 But of course it’s everyone’s own choice, but I’ve never heard of anyone that they regret having children, kids bring so much light and purpose into our lives. It’s literally what our whole body is designed to do, so of course it’s gonna be fulfilling 💓☺️
You can definitely repot the orchid! I suggest to do it when during spring since they will grow lots of roots then and adjust quickly. I have like 30 orchids and have been growing them for about 6 years!
I liked your riddle a lot❤. And I’m so, so happy for you. You deserve a nice, quiet, little place for you, Olive, and all your plants. And space for an outside garden! We just planted ours today. Houses are so much work but definitely worth it. I can’t wait for the big reveal!
Not only bright light but macro photography allows you to use a towel or something as the background. Using black and white backgrounds sometimes works
This was a great video. Very much enjoyed listening to your responses to everyones questions. Ive watched every one of your videos at least once and have started eatching them all again. Youve helped me with my plants, nade me laugh, made me cry and been such a blessing to me. Thank you so very much for all that you do for us. Much love to you and lil Olive. ❤
Orchid...get it out of the moss and into chunky bark, lots of drainage. If you mount it it will do fine but you will need to water it at least every other day. You for sure can and should repot orchids..don't get water in the crown. Except when mounted biggest way to kill them is over watering.
About orchids. I'm still experimenting but I think unless they come in a very good media they will die soon after they flower. I think we must repot most of them, but being very careful with the transition to the new medium. If they are in a very thin, wet medium - that will kill them - and we repot them in the adequate airy medium they will also die. So I am trying to mix a bit of coco peat and/or sphagnum moss to the chunky airy orchid bark to ease the transition. They are the first ones that survived so far...
I absolutely loved your riddle 🥹 it was so so cute lmao A+ for the amazing effort!! ❤️ also really excited about your big surprise bestie ☺️ it’s gonna be amazing 🥹 I feel so so happy for you, your boo, and your plants for this next chapter that’s about to come! I’ve been loving your content extra lately. Been going back and watching your old stuff and really been enjoying it! You’re my fav part of the morning ❤
Hi Fern, I’ve been growing orchids for years (20+) and as far as I know you need to get your orchid out of that plastic nursery pot. You can put it back in new moss very lightly fluffed up and if you decide to mount it that would be excellent too. The nursery pots have the moss jammed in too tightly which can lead to root tot. It’s your choice in the end. Good luck.
Hey Fern, I love your channel so much and this was a lovely way to get to know you a bit better. I see a lot of myself in you, the one woman show and wrestling the ups and downs that entails but the thing that really jumps out to me is your relationship with Olive!! I lost my fur baby a few yrs ago now and I too had her simce I was 21, she was my world. It broke me losing her and I’ve never wanted another dog because she had my heart. It took 3 yrs and the pandemic and I just knew I needed company again so I got my new loves, 2 kitties. Hold Olive tight and give her extra cuddles because I would give anything to have my Moo back. Lots of love and looking forward to your news in May :)
Thank you for sharing! I could listen to you talk for 5 hours or more straight! You bring such a relaxing vibe that I so need after working in healthcare! Your my way of getting away from it all!
Orchids can definitely be repotted. You just need to be gentle with the roots, as they can be a bit brittle sometimes. You should always hydrate them before repotting. Also different genera may need different types of substrate. I've learnt quite a lot about orchids by watching MissOrchidGirl's channel. Loved your riddle ❤ Sounds like you may be moving into a house with a graden (and maybe a greenhouse?) soon ☺ Have you bought a house Fern?
1:19:20 I KNOW! I KNOW! I KNOW!!! I am so excited for you and I wish I could help you out. It’s definitely a LOT. Can’t wait to see the “surprise” and the happiness it’s going to bring you. I’m so proud and happy for you!
With the orchid, I only repot mine when it’s not in bloom or the blooms are already dying off. I’d also only repot into moss as in bark and soil mine just rotted but it’s yet to show issues in moss and it’s been like that for a few months to a year now
That was a very nice video to listen to, thank you. As far as the orchids, go… I repot mine when I feel like it. I grow mine in moss and if the moss gets icky or full of algae, I just unpot it, add different moss and put it right back in the same pot. Mine don’t seem to need to be a up-potted very often, only when the roots are pretty much filling the pot. I don’t ever see any signs of stress from messing with the roots on mine though, so it’s not something that worries me. They just keep on blooming… Have a great day.
The few things I know about orchid is not repot when they are blooming. Not leave water on the leaves and in the space between leaves or they'll rot and wither away. Of course they would need repot sometimes, more because some roots die naturally overtime and would be medium for root rot or fungi desease, orchid like phalenopsis don't grow so much fast so maybe repot after 2 or 3 years
You definitely want to repot orchids. Once a year is a good starting point. It’s good for all the reasons we repot other plants. It gives you a chance to check the roots, remove the rotted ones, refresh the substrate and give it more room to grow. Check out MissOrchidGirls vids…they’ve taught me so much and I’m becoming a huge orchid enthusiast because of her!
I loved the riddle 😂 I'm so so excited for you and I can't wait! Maybe you can decorate your own house for fall and Halloween this year already! Sending you much love and wish you good luck on your exciting journey ❤
I have repotted orchids, but they have like a sponge holding the roots together, I always take this out. the 2 I have are doing pretty well , blooming again this spring 🌸
Hi! I grow a lot of orchids and you should sometimes repot them. do not leave them voor years in te same potting medium. You have a Phalaenopsis. There is a lot of information about these orchids on the internet. Mounting it is a possibility because most orchids are epifitic. But when you mount you orchid you probably have to water is more often then when you keep them in a pot.
LOVE the riddle fern!!! I can tell you took some time to think about it, I really like it :D and congratulations!!! I am going through the same process and im so excited for you!
Miss Orchid Girl here on UA-cam definitely repots her orchids lol. I don't know what that person is talking about. She has tons of videos on orchid care for beginners! ETA: if you ever go back to nursing, try a different field. I'm coming up on 9 years and I doubt I'd still be in the field if I'd stayed in my first job or had to work adults (I work in a step-down NICU with good leadership so even though there's BS to deal with, it's manageable).
I loved this Q+A :) Your content is great! You seem so professional and organised, while also feeling like a bestie that I share tea and plants with, haha. Congratulations on ~what I think the riddle is~! 😉
I repot my orchids, after the blooms are done... mine thrive after I do this. I think it's good to do bc often the substrate is made more for the growers, than us at home...plus, it's a good idea to check on your roots. Try watching miss orchid girls videos if you want to learn about orchids 😉
Love getting to know you Fern! It’s fun to learn the ways people in an (online) community can be so similar and also different! Sending good vibes for the big things coming your way 💚
orchids can feel so overwhelming until you grow them! definitely repot them if they are root-bound!! but they prefer to be more root-bound like hoya. start with the phal’s and then you can try some of the weirder ones. the only trick with orchids is just giving them ambient light (i think east windows are best) and don’t over water!! i love orchids so much, and hope you try some other varieties!!
Love your videos, so calming and love your excitement for what you are talking about! Sweet Q&A lots of truth and I am sure that is hard to be so open! It's ok to keep things close to your heart 💖
Oookay that riddle was so good 🙌 I am bad at them so had to check the comments LOL. I am so excited for you and your next adventures and can't wait to follow along! I love the Q&A, I feel like I relate to you so much. I love how honest you are! 💚
44:20 -ish about orchids No idea where that started. Orchids are plants. Plants will need to be repotted from time to time, especually if there are root issues. Looks like what you have is a Phalaenopsis orchid. I only saw it briefly but it looks vigurous, which is good. Obviously, do not repot it right aftet you brought it home. Leave it about 2 weeks to adjust, if the orchid doesn't show any clear signs of distress. The trickiest thing about orchids - and this seems to apply to ALL of them: they can go downhill super fast and just spiral, especially if you have something in the soil that you do not address. Root rot and bush snails can obliterate orchid roots. Good news is that Phalaenopsis are usually hardy and recover very well. They can also survive in terrible conditions for a long time (ie. the rumors that they need ice or should never be repotten and just left to rot in old, broken-down media forever). Some grow them in moss. I personally prefer bark chips. The most important is that they get both air and moisture. If the media is super compacted and moist all the time, the roots will rot. With Phals, the state of the roots is more important than how moist is the media. If you can, use a transparent pot. It will help you see if the roots are plump and full or if they are a bit silvery, a bit wrinkly and thirsty. (Phal roots can green up if they were exposed to light, but it does not impact the orchid if they are not) Once you decided on the media and the pot, make sure you have hydrogen peroxide 3% (you can get it at a pharmacy) and a pair of scissors. Spray the scissors and the new pot with hydrogen peroxide 3%. Start untangling the old media from the roots as cleanly as you can, and asess the damage. Cut off any dark, mushy, smelly roots - they are rotting and can harbor an infection. Cut off any empty papery roots - they are long dead. Spray hydrogen peroxide 3% on the remaining roots and be thorough with it. This will kill any snails and other pests, fungi, bacteria, and algea. After this you pot it up with your substrate of choice or a combination of moss and bark. Water it when the roots are thirsy. Use lukewarm water. Orchids should never encounter ice, by the way, because it can burn the roots and send them into shock. Once the flowers dry off, cut the flower spike right above the first node (the closest to the orchid). You should disinfect the scissors before cutting the flower stem, but having a bit of tissue between the orchid and the cut gives you time to see if an infection is developing. A normal cycle for monopodial orchids (Phals included) looks like this: vegetative growth - flowering - vegetaive growth - flowering. When the flowers are mostly spent, the orchid will put its energy into leaf and root production. You should get 1-2 large leaves a cycle. After that, the orchid will likely get ready to bloom again, if the conditions are right and it has enough energy. Leaf growth usually stops and root production slows dramatically. The energy and sap will be directed towards growing and blooming the flower spike/s. Some have a genetic pre-disposition to produce more flower spikes than others. The more mature the orchid and the larger the overall plant, the better the bloom show. Hope this helps. ❤
I appreciate this so much, thank you for taking the time to write it! My orchid was doing really well, but has unfortunately taken a turn for the worse :( Like you said, it's gone downhill very quickly. I am going to assess the roots tomorrow. Thank you again!!
@@wildfern I hope it will recover. The best you can expect it is to be producing new roots. Also, if the plant is struggling, cut off the flower stem to urge it into vegetative growth and help it save its energy. Depending on its state, it may be set back for a while and not bloom.
Orchid: yes definitely at least take it out and look at the roots. I've had several of those mini phals before that looked like they were thriving for months, then I unpot it and the roots are black! You need to check on them.
Thank for answer my question Fern! That is sad 🥺 but anyways you can do it and keep it for you and your memories 😊😊 also I want to thank you because I'm learning alot seen your videos about plants and keeps learning my English! Fern I make my own Green Tea cold if you like cold drinks but In a gal pitcher i use 5bags of green tea and then less than a 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup of Your Logal honey That will help in allergy season 😊bring water to almost rolling boil turn heat off and let steep for a couple hours.
You absolutly can and should repot your orchid. I would wait until the blooms are done, so you don't risk losing them before their time. The best medium to repot would be sphagnum moss, they really love that in my experience. Soak the pot of the orchid for 15 minutes (just the roots, not the leaves and not the stem or the crown), then remove the pot and all the medium from the roots, rinse the roots and cut any off, that are dead (dark color and mushy) and then repot in sphagnum moss. Dont push the moos down, leave air pockets. For the pot size, I would choose maybe a 4-5 ( 9cm diameter) inch pot. (im not good with inches, because I live in europe and we use the metrics system) If thats too small, size up. Water after the repot and tadaa. Orchid repotted. I check after a month if any extra roots have died, if yes you can remove those and put back in the same pot and moss. I would recommend you repot every 3 years or if the orchid dries too fast for you to keep up with watering.
Thank you for it no longer bought you joy. Some people keep plants and are miserable. Tetrasperma will not grow for me. I tried three times. Chucked it in the garbage 😅
For your staghorn, you're right about the consistency. I've had mine for about a year and it's doing great mounted like yours. I water weekly by soaking it under the shower head and let it drip off in the tub. It should be fine mounted until it gets so large that you can't even see the bark it is mounted on. By then you should be able to cut it up into different babies.
You do repot Orchids! The moss they come in gets old as does the bark you pot them in. I repot every 1-2 years. You should try some Cattleyas and Oncidiums !
feel free to listen to this one podcast style 🌿 luv you all xx

You should repot your orchid. That moss will eventually get stale and orchid roots need to breathe which they can’t do too well stuffed in that small moss filled container.
Keep your personal life personal, girl. You do you! This is your job, The internet does not need to know all the aspects of your life. You have every right to not share. Much respect!
You're really one of my favorite internet people to hang out with 😊
Also, months later, knowing what the surprise is your riddle is so good!!
Awwww hahah thank you so much 🥺💓🌿
You are moving to a fixer upper with a garden? 🤔
I think you would be such a great mom, the way that you take care of olive and the plants show how nurturing you are, and the way that you describe your dream life 😍
But of course it’s everyone’s own choice, but I’ve never heard of anyone that they regret having children, kids bring so much light and purpose into our lives.
In my limited orchid experience, yes you have to repot it bc they get root bound like any other plant.
Can I say I loved how happy you looked reading your riddle!!! You did such a great job putting that together❤❤❤
Orchid...get it out of the moss and into chunky bark, lots of drainage. If you mount it it will do fine but you will need to water it at least every other day. You for sure can and should repot orchids..don't get water in the crown. Except when mounted biggest way to kill them is over watering.
Yes you need to repot orchids. The planting medium breaks down and needs replaced.
When the right person comes along your mommy instinct might kick in.
Oh! Perfect! I want to do some chores and now I won’t be tempted to glue myself to the screen looking at all the plants! ❤🎉
Literally right around the corner now 👀 🥰🙌🏽
ooo are they moving in together
@@Sarah-dm7np we aren’t here for tea ☕️. There is a real community that are very close and we truly care for everyone of us. Just be happy for her and let’s not try and make something out of nothing.
@@brooklin_bernek i wasnt here for tea either im just genuinely happy for fern and hope she is buying a property that she is going to love
I’ve been loving your content extra lately. Been going back and watching your old stuff and really been enjoying it! You’re my fav part of the morning ❤
Thank you so much 🥺
Moving to a HOUSE!! That was my initial gut feeling when you first mentioned the “stressor” and after that riddle I’m convinced! 🕵🏼♀️
I loved this candid chat, you’re so real and honest in your responses. Really enjoyed sitting down and chilling with a UA-cam friend! Xx
It's ok to report your orchids after the flower all gone. I've report mine and it bloom again.
The riddle was great 😁 I hope it’s something outdoors planty!
A HOUSE!!!!! FINALLY
9:55 I’m planning on making a ping rock here soon still doing my research on ping varieties
I love videos like this fern! Its like catching up with a friend after a couple weeks or months
Fffffern that poem was on point!! That was really really good loved it
Hahah thank you :)
I’d also only repot into moss as in bark and soil mine just rotted but it’s yet to show issues in moss and it’s been like that for a few months to a year now
Ahaha omg your riddle was so cute! “we’ve done it before, let’s do it once more” 😆 I’m so excited for you!!!
😆😆 thank you!!
I hated my small compacta variegata but when i ordered a big 8 inch basket, i love it.
“I’ve prepared a riddle for you” LMAO that was awesome 😂 💗
You absolutely can repot orchids! Mine is mounted on a board and hung on the wall. It's so cool. The roots have grown around the board.
Sooo cool, I love when they're mounted!
I loved the riddle 😂 I'm so so excited for you and I can't wait! Maybe you can decorate your own house for fall and Halloween this year already! Sending you much love and wish you good luck on your exciting journey ❤
listened to this one while doing some chores! so nice! i would definitely listen to a podcast of you talking about plants! 🪴
Awe thank you!! And congratulations to you too 🙌
Everything you said about Olive and your thoughts on ever getting another dog is 100% the same way I think/feel❤
Omg! Yes, this is about the house, right? I thought about it every single time I was watching your videos! I’m so excited for it!
I loved this Q+A :) Your content is great! You seem so professional and organised, while also feeling like a bestie that I share tea and plants with, haha. Congratulations on ~what I think the riddle is~! 😉
Love this long chatty video. The riddle/clue about your big thing was awesome. I think I know what it might be and if I’m right - woohoo! 💚
A cool job would be to create/come up with nail polish names :P. This was fun! Thanks for doing this.
Loved this! And even though I’ve already watched your Patreon announcement video, I loved your riddle! So creative!
Loved your Q and A, watched the whole thing, and your plants are absolutely gorgeous and the plant care tips have been very helpful.❤
44:20 -ish about orchids
No idea where that started.
(Phal roots can green up if they were exposed to light, but it does not impact the orchid if they are not)
Once you decided on the media and the pot, make sure you have hydrogen peroxide 3% (you can get it at a pharmacy) and a pair of scissors.
MOVING TO A NEW HOUSE???? Apartment??? Can’t wait to see what it is!
I'm born in New Jersey but when I was little like 1 year my mom go to PR so now I'm in US like 8 year and I'm learn alot of English now! ❤❤
My guess is you are buying a house! And kudos to you for keeping your personal relationship to off the WWW. Too many critics and nosy Nancy's. And Happy Birthday Olive!
Love this repot answering questions combination…I just can’t stop watching. Thank you for your very personal answers!
I haven't read any other comments yet but my guess is you are buying a house? 🏡 Loved the Q&A 😊
Nice repotting & chat! Thanks for sharing Fern.
The riddle is lovely. I’m so excited! 🌱🌾👩🌾
Fern, this was great! You should definitely do more of these! It was a great listen 🪴♥️
I love that you are a Gemini home body, me too. I feel pressure to live up to the social butterfly stereotypes. Thank you for being so transparent! I love your channel so much!
Beautiful plant and the terra-cotta looks great with the marbling.
Or you mount it similar to you staghorn fern, that also works perfectly.
By then you should be able to cut it up into different babies.
you are so amazing! Such a beautiful person inside and out!! xo
You do repot Orchids! The moss they come in gets old as does the bark you pot them in. I repot every 1-2 years. You should try some Cattleyas and Oncidiums !
