  • This video shows the process I used to create the recording of "Snowfall", a piece I originally wrote for a small school orchestra, with only a few instruments available. The individual parts are relatively simple, but together the piece tries to capture the atmosphere of typical winter scene, with flurries of snow falling, people enjoying the snow, and then finally the snow melting away.
I only used tones from the Casio CT-X3000 (no other keyboards or virtual instruments were used). DAW software (such as Reason, Cubase, Logic, Ableton, etc) is such a convenient way to build up the layers of a song or instrumental piece.
In addition to the keyboard, you will need an audio interface, two USB "printer" cables, and a jack-to-jack (guitar/keyboard) lead. Audio interfaces range from about £50/$60/€50 upwards, and often come with some "lite" DAW software to get you started.
I recorded each part (track or layer) of the piece first as MIDI data and then converted each into audio. Effects, balance, and panning were added in the software to produce the final mix.
The score is available to purchase on Sheet Music Plus: www.sheetmusic...
    Thanks for watching.

    Hello Stewart.
I think the videos you make about the Casio CT-X3000 are just great!
I've seen all of them so far and they are very helpful!

Thanks for your feedback. It's good to know the content is covering the kind of information people find useful. Let me know if want me to cover something particular and I'll add that to the list of topics to cover in future videos. Glad you enjoyed "Snowfall" too.
All the best - Happy New Year!

Good morning Stewart , Can I ask if we record a style and lead voice say strings , Can the CTX 3000/5000 split out the instruments into separate channels for a daw ie those being used in the style ie drum, bass and style voices and then right hand lead voices etc etc ?

Yes, as a MIDI file. You can then import that into the DAW sequencer and then edit it and change instruments. I did it in a recent video showing how to record the MIDI file and then import it to create music score - but the basic process would be the same. Check it out here - ua-cam.com/video/eDNGHVB7p1o/v-deo.htmlsi=lqCJ4zSFjJJz5rX4
Of course, if you're intending to maintain the sounds from the Casio then that's a different technique, starting with recording the audio (into a DAW or elsewhere). Then once you've got an audio recording, you can use AI to separate the audio into different tracks. There are various apps but I've messed around with Moises and it's pretty good - www.moises.ai
Hope that helps you out. All the best. 😎

Hello Stewart, I just bought the ctx3000 but need a set of headphones that will fit the outlet on the keyboard.. sorry for going off topic and thanks for any help you can give 😉

The connector on the keyboard is the larger jack socket, sometimes called "a quarter inch", so it's double the diameter of the socket on most phones which is "an eighth inch". Sometimes they are measured in millimetres but weirdly these are 6.5 mm (quarter inch) and 3.5 mm (eighth inch) respectively. Most headphones now include an adaptor to switch between the two sizes so it's not usually an issue.
The other thing to consider is whether you want headphones that sit on top of your ears or go around the ears - i.e. "on ear" or "around ear" designs. The around ear ones are usually a little bulkier and for me can sometimes press on my glasses and after a few minutes start to become uncomfortable.
And then there's the price - which range from under £50/$50 to several thousands! At the moment I've been switching between two models which were both around £100 each. The Sennheiser HD25 are very lightweight and sit on top of the ear, and the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x go around the ears. With a recognised make you will usually be able to buy spares if anything wears out. I had a pair of OneOdio Studio Pro headphones, which I found comfortable and sounded great, but one of the side hinges broke, so these are now useless.
I hope that helps - it's a whole new universe waiting to be discovered!

Hi Stewart, thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Some tips that may enhance your viewership - use timeline chapters so that people can quickly navigate to the point that they want for a quick reference, consider breaking down your content into separate videos, use headings/subtitles within your videos to separate different parts

Thanks for the tips! I will add some of your suggestions to future videos. I prefer to keep the videos on the short side (this one was an exception), as it can be hard to digest lots of information in one go. These videos are for my own benefit and as well for others, so I'm still learning the art of content creation. Glad you find them useful. All the best - enjoy your keyboard playing.

Glad the video was useful and informative. Using a DAW really opens up some creative possibilities, and I would recommend giving it a go if you haven't done so before. Happy New Year from the UK!
