  • The ability to record your RHYTHMS really sets the CT-X3000 & CT-X5000 apart from other keyboards in this price range. But creating from scratch can be daunting (especially if you read the manual!) so this is a simple step by step approach that will help to get you started.
    The Quantize and Beats values bear little relation to their setting so here they are for you.
    THERE ARE 13 QUANTIZE OPTIONS
    QUANTIZE: 1 = OFF; 2 = 4; 3 = dotted 4; 4 = triplet 4; 5 = 8ths; 6 = dotted 8ths; 7 = triplet 8ths; 8 = 16ths; 9 = dotted 16ths; 10 = triplet 16ths; 11 = 32nds; 12 = dotted 32nds; 13 = triplet 32nds.
    THERE ARE 22 BEATS (TIME SIGNATURES) OPTIONS = 2-8/4, 2-16/8
    BEATS PER MEASURE (TIME SIGNATURE)
    1 = 2/4; 2 = 3/4; 3 = 4/4; 4 = 5/4; 5 = 6/5; 6 = 7/4; 7 = 8/4; 8 = 2/8; 9 = 3/8; 10 = 4/8; 11 = 5/8; 12 = 6/8; 13 = 7/8; 14 = 8/8; 15 = 9/8; 16 = 10/8; 17 = 11/8; 18 = 12/8; 19 = 13/8; 20 = 14/8; 21 = 15/8; 22 = 16/8.
    SP = Short press
    LP = Long press
    L/R = LEFT (1) RIGHT (3) arrows
    U/D = UP (5) DOWN (2) arrows
    1. Wheel to select a blank user rhythm
    2. LP RECORD/STOP for “Rhy Name”; ENTER; WHEEL; L/R
    3. ENTER; “Sure?”; + (YES); EXIT
    4. LP FUNCTION/EDIT; V1 flashing; “Drum”
    5. Change to I, E, V2,4, F1-4 if necessary
    6. Press REGISTRATION 8; L/R to select “Menu” “Element”; ENTER
    7. L/R to change element (Measure or beat) and wheel to change value (beat 3 - 4/4)
    8. Measure value 1-16; EXIT x2; “Drum” (or other selected Element)
    9. Press PART so it’s lit; change part (1-8); press PART to unlit
    10. Wheel to select TONE; press NUM then type nnn for TONE
    11. SP RECORD/STOP “Empty” (or “Recorded”)
    12. LP RECORD/STOP “Quantize”
    13. L/R to select Quantize, Precount, PlayChrd, Metronom. Wheel to change value
    14. Check the sounds and part you want to record; use WHEEL; set steady tempo
    15. Press START/STOP to start loop recording
    16. Press START/STOP to stop loop recording
    17. EXIT; “Exit?”; Yes; “Write?”; Yes; “No Name”

    What a great tutorial. I've just ordered this keyboard and the fact that you can write your own drum patterns is amazing. I didn't know it could do that. I write music but I want everything to be my own so I don't like using pre-recorded rhythms. Can you make a whole song using your own rhythms? One thing I've noticed from watching your videos is the menus seem really complicated.

    • @StewartWallaceSJWMusic
      @StewartWallaceSJWMusic  2 роки тому +1

      Yes you can create your own drum and accompaniment patterns and therefore these can be used for whole songs. In one of my videos I use a pattern that I made into a short piece: ua-cam.com/video/7YPSlpQbAhI/v-deo.html
      After a while, getting around the keyboard menus gets a little easier, once you've got the architecture of the unit sorted in your mind. The manual is pretty dire and can add to the confusion, so best to try to get familiar by experimenting and make your own step by step notes - my videos are just my own notes.
      All the best.

      I've been Kerala and really miss the vibe, the food and the weather - here, it's cold and damp! I'm not an expert on Indian sounds so forgive me, but if you want to adjust the pitch you can set the pitch bend wheel to a value and then just push it up or down until you get to the new pitch you require. You can do this on any drum set. Alternatively, choose the TABLA tone and then just find the pitches you require on the keyboard. A third option is to use a pitch DSP FX which has many more parameters to play around with, and you can some really amazing and extreme sounds.
      Unfortunately, Casio don't sell the CTX-9000in version in the UK, whereas we can buy Yamaha's versions of their keyboards. Such a shame.
      All the best. 😎

    Many thanks for this great tutoriel ! You are saving us ! Both the keyboard and the manual are quite complicated to manage (i haven't bought it yet, but tried it at a friend's place for hours) .
    Two little questions: Is there a simple way, after having made a mistake, to erase a recording on a track to start again a new recording ?
    I don't quite understand what you do at 6:00, did you have to replay the notes on the keyboard (after pressing registration button) to erase them ? Isn't there a more straightforward way to do it, like "clear track" for exemple.
    If i record a bass line on, for exemple, 4 measures, would i have to replay all the notes on the keyboard to erase them ?
    And is there a way, when you want to make a new rhythm, to recall a setting with everything ready (each instrument on its track, quantize setting, volumes etc...) ?
    So that we don't need to do all what you have described all over again when starting again recording a new rhythm from scratch.
    Thanks again !

      If you're recording a part and you make a mistake, you can clear the mistake by:
      1. Stay in record mode
      2. Hold down Registration button number 2 - don't let go!
      3. Hold down the note(s) on the keyboard that you want to erase
      4. Release the Registration and carry on recording
      5. Press RECORD/STOP to end the recording process.
      If you want to clear the whole part (or "track") of a RHTYHM pattern when you're not recording - for example, if you want to delete the percussion part, which is on track 1, then do this:
      1. Select the user RHYTHM you want to edit, hold down FUNCTION/EDIT to get into EDIT mode - EDIT should appear
      2. Select the part you want to clear - short press PART/MIXER button and the red LED comes on
      3. Press 1 on the keypad, and the display should now say "1 Perc." and number one is flashing on the display. The variation/fill number will also flash and can be changed.
      4. Press 1 again on the keypad and the red LED goes out
      5. Press Registration button number 2 - the display briefly says "Clear" followed by "Element". All flashing stops and only V1 (or other variation) is on the display.
      6. Use L(1) & R(3) arrows on the keypad to select "Part" and the part number reappears.
      7. Now press ENTER(6). The display says "Sure?". Press YES(+) delete that part (or the whole RHYTHM).
      Note - at step 6 above you can also select "All" which will delete all parts of the RHYTHM, across all Variations. In other words, it clears the RHYTHM completely. This will mean that selecting the part at steps 2-4 above doesn't really matter.
      I hope that makes some sense, and it's a method that works for you!
      Not sure about your final question, I think you mean like a template, in which case you could probably create a "blank" user RHYTHM and just copy that and start from there.
      All the best.

      @@StewartWallaceSJWMusic Sorry for the very late answer, and thanks a lot for your crystal clear explanations !
      Casio made things complicated, but i suppose that by repeating the same steps over and over again, it becomes a kind of automatic and fast enough.

    Is it possible to use a different number of measures for each variation? For example, use 4 measures for variations 1-3 and have a 2 measure phrase for variation 4.
    Or, when you select the number of measures for the first variation that you record does that number of measures then apply to each variation?

    • @StewartWallaceSJWMusic
      @StewartWallaceSJWMusic  2 роки тому +1

      Yes! Each Variation can have a different metre (time signature) and a different length (up to 16 measures!). For instance, Var1 could 2 measures long with 4 quarter note (crotchet) beats (4/4). Var2 could be 6 measures long with 7 eighth note (quaver) beats (7/8). And so on. What were they thinking at Casio HQ? Lots of potential for some weird prog rock stuff here!

      I'm not sure - as usual it could be several things. Obviously, make sure you've got every part turned on in the MIXER. Also, make sure you are recording different PARTS - i.e. when you're in record edit mode press the PART button so the red LED is on and then select the part you want to record, using the keypad numbers 1-8 to select it.
      In my description I've made a list of the steps - provided you follow it exactly then it will work. But let me know if it's still causing you grief!

      Video No. 36 (ua-cam.com/video/zbUy-Srm35o/v-deo.html) in the series has a section on copying variations, though I did encounter some issues, which I describe at the end. Copying user variations starts about 5 and half minutes into the video.

    Great video, while your on the subject of rhythms, maybe you can touch on copying and pasting parts and elements from one rhythm to another rhythm. This is a cool feature that has not really been demonstrated as of yet. So let's say you don't like the fill or variation of a rhythm, you can just copy a fill or variation (element) from some other rhythm that you do like.☺☺

      Yes, but remember you've only got two tracks to play with - "1 Perc" and "2 Drums". They both can be used for percussion and drum tones, so record the snare on one, and the other parts on the other one.
      Each track can have their own volume, pan, reverb send, chorus send, delay send, and volume. Hold down PART/MIXER to enter the MIXER pages, and you can set the values there.

      A rhythm is a repeating pattern that is used within songs, rather than a whole song itself, and by playing chords in real-time you are overlaying the harmonies that you hear. You could create several patterns for one song, each one representing the verse, chorus, or bridge sections of the song. The length of them is not really an issue, because they just keep looping until you press stop or move to another one. Try recording them into a song to create your finished idea.

    Can you tell me how to delete a recorded rhythm? I played with the pitch and I messed it all up.. also how can I take the pitch adjustment off after I already messed with it?

    • @StewartWallaceSJWMusic
      @StewartWallaceSJWMusic  2 роки тому +1

      If you mess up during your recording session, keep it looping in record mode, hold down REGISTRATION 2 with the notes you played on the keyboard that are wrong. Let it keep playing through the whole pattern, and then those notes will be deleted. Then you can just play in the correct ones. I think that answers the second part of your question as well!
      A second option: you can also delete a PART after it's been recorded, when you're not loop recording mode. Select the PART (Perc, Drum, Bass, Part 1-5) using the PART/MIXER button. Press REGISTRATION 2 and it quickly says "Clear" followed by "Element". Press the right ARROW (3 on the keypad) once, and change "Element" to "Part". Press ENTER (6). It says "Sure?". Press Yes(+) and that PART has been deleted.
      A third option is just to wipe the whole RHTYHM so there's nothing recorded on all the PARTS. Select the USER RHYTHM you want to delete. Long press (LP) the RECORD/STOP button. Press the right ARROW(3) twice so the screen now reads "Rhy Clr". Press ENTER (6). It says "Sure?". Press Yes(+) and that RHYTHM has been deleted.
      I hope that helps. All the best.

    • @StewartWallaceSJWMusic
      @StewartWallaceSJWMusic  2 роки тому

      @@sunkissedpatchy4832 It's possible that you've muted a PART in the MIXER, but I think the more likely explanation is that you've pressed ENTER after you've selected the PART you are recording.
      This puts that PART into solo mode - i.e. it mutes all the other parts you've recorded and you will only hear the part you've selected. On the screen all the other part numbers will disappear and you will see just the part number and 5 thick horizontal lines flashing.
      The solution: press ENTER again. All the other part numbers (1-8) should now reappear.
      I hope this helps - and it's the correct solution for you! All the best.

      Agreed. I've been getting to grips with a Sonicware Liven XFM recently, and that has a lot of depth and button combinations which can be difficult at first. The overlays seem to belong to a previous era.
      But the Casio is in a class of its own for testing and confusing the user - and yet I have started to almost understand its quirks. Sometimes it feels like you're looking through the wrong end of a telescope - everything seems so far off that you can almost give up. For the money though, it's worth hanging in there, if you like a challenge!
