Hi Tony. I made the comment because, about 30 years ago, a group of neighbours got together to process firewood. Somehow, one of the men put his hand in the path of the wedge. For the rest of his life, he had a metal hook attached to his wrist. The man had many years of experience splitting wood, but still made an unfortunate mistake. His misfortune has made me very aware of the risks associated with the use of a splitter. My comment was not meant as a criticism, but to point out that Trevor's caution is 'best practice'. If you watch Sandy, of Sawing with Sandy, split wood, he also pulls his hands away from the round when the wedge is moving.
I totally understand and didn’t take it as a criticism. When using any splitter you have to be focused on what you are doing and where your hands are especially when using a vertical type splitter. 👍TCT
I really love the 1165. It’s right between the box store splitters and the truly commercial grade stuff. I like your comment about it being a little splitter that does big things. Thanks, Tony.

I saw the video you did with Chris of In the Woodyard comparing the Eastonmade Axis to the 17VS from Wolf Ridge. Then this popped up, well planned! This is very impressive for a little 7 1/2 ton machine. Thank you!

Hello Tony, another great video. So far I have purchased two tools after watching your videos, Tree puller, and RH Tree pusher. So far I LOVE them. This time I beat you to it. I saw the 1165 on another channel, then watched every video of it I could find. I saw all the mods made so I had my list when I called them or order one. I even gave them my own suggestions, some they are working on and some already in prototype. They did tell me they were going to ship out a unit with hands free to a UA-camr but would not release you name or channel. You were on my short list. I am glad it was you, I love your reviews. It is coming close to my turn for production but I may wait a little to get one with all the mods I want first. The hands free is a big one, but would like to hear your thoughts about the knee control compared to foot. The other is that I would much rather have a good Powder Coating than the paint that quickly wears off. Thanks again.

Tony I've really been impressed with the 1165 v seeing it in action. Now especially seeing it handle the shorts/cookies etc. I really hate splitting those they always seem to end up on the ground with the horizontal splitters. That Split Fire 1165v is proving to be a very capable splitter. It's time Split Fire take a page from Eastonmade's book and send several to the firewood youtubers to use. At least the ones that have glacier box store splitters and not upgraded to a commercial splitter. I think that machine fills a void in the market between box store splitters and the entry level commercial splitters.
You are soooooo right the Split-Fire 1165v fills a void in the market for an affordable splitter an average Woodhound can put on his wishlist. One thing that I didn’t like about using vertical splitters at the Hoosier Fireeood Hysteria was it seemed harder to man handle (or in Kristen’s case woman handle) the rounds - especially the bigger ones - on the table compared to horizontal splitters
Joe that’s interesting you say that. What I found is sliding a block of wood was easier on a flat surface like most vertical splitters have vs a narrow beam that most horizontal splitters have. Oh well I’m glad we have so many choices on splitters now. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

yes they need to redesign that log lift with a back and a lip among other modifications, especially a foot-pedal but they said no when I called them due to safety reasons but Eastonmade and Wolferidge have them so not sure what they are so concerned about.

Christian, it’s not rated for road towing. But I’m sure someone will tow behind an ATV down the road. The problem with trying to tow with a car or truck is the tow bar is only 6”-8” off the ground so if you try to put on your vehicle the splitter will be angled extreamily backward. Len thats a tough question, everyone is differ with their response time. Some people freeze up so it wouldn't matter foot or knee control. I wish you had an opportunity to try both to make a decision. Its like a golf club or fishing rod everyone likes a certain feel and the same is with foot or knee controls. What a fun video to make with family! No doubt Kristen was impressed with the split-fire! Did you guys noodle because the log lift couldn't lift that much weight, or because the little vertical wall in the middle front of the table, the rounds won't fit from the wall there? If that's the situation, would be cool to have that be a fold down plate for bigger rounds, if safe to do so. I wonder if the split-fire is just a single stage pump, my 25 ton countyline, when I get in the nasty wood, the two stage kicks in and it slowly goes through it. If just a single stage, maybe that could be an option down the road? Maybe not necessary! Do you like knee control or foot control better? Cool Yamaha 3 wheeler!
The log lift can handle 150 lbs rounds so it would have lifted the blocks but The Split-Fire belly protector limits a round to about 18” which is plenty wide for this splitter. I believe this is a single stage pump but I’ll tell you with the think knife wedge it really cuts through gnarly wood. I’m sure with the huge popularity of the 1165v there possibly will be a 2.0 version at some point. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
First my condolences for the loss of your furry 4 legged best friend. The only thing that will help the pain is time. So far no issues, been splitting a couple hours daily in 80+ degree weather since I got the 1165v and no problems with oil foaming up like my box store splitter use to do. What is the table height? Using an Ultra now I’m sure you are familiar with and it’s comfy. I know your Axis is also at a nice height so I am curious for only a few grand for a fast light weight vertical with a lift - is it at a comfortable work height?
Jose, the table height on the 1165V is 31.5” while the Axis is 36”. I thought the 1165v would be too low and uncomfortable but to my surprise it isn’t. At 6’2” I don’t have an issue splitting and I’m not bent over at all. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

Nice splitter. Your old ATV is a Yamaha Tri-Moto YTM200 1983 with chain drive. There was a shaft drive version also and in 1984 equipped with a reverse gear. I have a Honda Foreman ATV to tow my Gripo log splitter, see my video.
Yes the splitter is awesome. The Yamaha YTM 200 and my Honda Big Red are indispensable for ice fishing and getting into narrow path woods. I use my Big Red to drag rounds on my big sled when I cant get tractor or UTV. It so much easier then my Honda Rubicon. The only thing i wish it had was reverse. im not sure im a fan of the knee pedal. It seems very unnatural. No idea why they didnt just use a foot pedal like every other vertical splitter out there.
Initially I thought the same thing since all the vertical splitters out there are foot operated but after splitting 5 cords I’m not sure which I like better. Oh and by the way if you don’t like the knee control you can use the hand control so your fingers are nowhere near the wood you’re splitting. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT

I wonder hoe hot the hydraulic fluid gets when splitting thar much wood pn such a small fluid capacity hydraulic system.

What is the table height? Using an Ultra now I’m sure you are familiar with and it’s comfy. I know your Axis is also at a nice height so I am curious for only a few grand for a fast light weight vertical with a lift - is it at a comfortable work height?
Jose, the table height on the 1165V is 31.5” while the Axis is 36”. I thought the 1165v would be too low and uncomfortable but to my surprise it isn’t. At 6’2” I don’t have an issue splitting and I’m not bent over at all.

Nice splitter. Your old ATV is a Yamaha Tri-Moto YTM200 1983 with chain drive. There was a shaft drive version also and in 1984 equipped with a reverse gear. I have a Honda Foreman ATV to tow my Gripo log splitter, see my video.
Yes the splitter is awesome. The Yamaha YTM 200 and my Honda Big Red are indispensable for ice fishing and getting into narrow path woods. I use my Big Red to drag rounds on my big sled when I cant get tractor or UTV. It so much easier then my Honda Rubicon. The only thing i wish it had was reverse.

Glad you enjoyed the video. That’s a tough question. Though I tend towards saying no, it depends on the maturity of the young person and how much experience he/she has had with power tools or equipment.
It’s no different then (a doing a knife, ax or gun.

Trevor was much safer, pulling his hands away from the rounds when splitting.
Jim there is a learning curve when you try something new. This was Krysten’s first attempt at running the 1165v. Trevor and I had split a couple cords before we made this video so he got use to the splitter.

im not sure im a fan of the knee pedal. It seems very unnatural. No idea why they didnt just use a foot pedal like every other vertical splitter out there.
Initially I thought the same thing since all the vertical splitters out there are foot operated but after splitting 5 cords I’m not sure which I like better.
Oh and by the way if you don’t like the knee control you can use the hand control so your fingers are nowhere near the wood you’re splitting.

@TonysCoolTools your not thinking about hands or fingers when you push that leg lever. It is a great machine, that's just not an option I would choose, with safety in mind
