Jay I'm a single dad of a Downs boy. He'll sit and watch YT videos with me sometimes. Back twenty years ago a friend of mine had a old church concrete block building on some property he bought. We used to go spend the weekends there helping him clear the over grown vines and scrub oaks back to the old growth portion of the property. He absolutely loved "going camping". When he saw you fixing up the sausage and Bush's baked beans take a guess what we're having for supper tonight. Thank for another great video!

There is extensive research demonstrating that spending 8-10 days in the wilderness every year helps reset one’s mental health. Even more so after stressful events, but always be safe when doing so.
@@CDNR711 I believe this 100%. My close friends have a mountain cottage in central WA outside of any cities and we spend several weekends there each year. We all feel like a million bucks after even just a few days at a time. We eat hearty, drink, and spend time in front of either a fire pit or the inside fireplace. I'm a veteran with a bad sleep disorder and I never have trouble falling or staying asleep at their property.
Build a small, very well insulated "cabinet" with an insulated duct from the cabin for the generator. When needed in freezing conditions, open a small hatch to duct work ,& place a small battery-operated fan to push warm air from cabin to generator. 30 minutes to an hour later, close hatch and go easily start the generator. Generators cost big $$$$. Freezing cold starts cause extraordinary fast wear & tear. A warmed generator will last years longer, and the much quieter operation of generator ain't a bad thing!
I’ve never commented before on this channel. I’ve been watching it since Jay put a floor in his tent. Maybe two years? I hail from Connecticut and we’ve had a very balmy autumn. I love watching Jay’s channel because I used to be an avid year round camper, over 475 trips in my lifetime, and it’s something I don’t do anymore but Jay’s channel brings me back and I love watching it.
Generators gas may have some moisture in it . Might want to have some gas additive like Heat that really works for cold weather starts . I live in ultra cold weather too .
When you were saying it was warmer outside than inside: I live in an 100 yr old house with wonky heating and when a friend asked me about the house’s insulation, I said ‘it’s great..it keeps all the cold IN!’
My absolute favorite part was watching you struggle with the generator..... not because you were struggling - but because we've all been there. You reminded us all we're not alone. That thing is COOOOOLD
Hi Jay, glad you’re able to get back to the cabin, great video! One tip for starting small engines like your generator (lawnmower, pressure washer, etc). Pull the cord out slowly until you feel resistance. This is the engine on the compression stroke. Once you feel resistance, let the starter cord back into the machine. Once it’s all the way back in then reef on it with a good full pull. Having the engine on the compression stroke when you do this helps it start up way faster. Works for most small engines, even two strokes like chain saws. Take care old son!
Wow, that’s some real cold! We had a cabin for years in Ontario, and my dad was adamant that we clean and fill the wood stove before leaving deer camp. That first winter trip he wanted to walk in and be able to strike a match. He used to say if you need 30 minutes of prep to get warm, it might be fine… and it might not. Excited for your early start this year, have a safe and fun winter!
My dad was the same! Fill the stove, have a small batch inside the cabin ready to go, just in case the weather made things difficult. Man, that brings back memories. It's been over 20 years since he passed. We sold the cabin and that was that. I can still feel that cold, though!
I'm in good shape at 60 years young. With that said, I'd have ZERO desire to spend time in that level of cold. Oh hell no! lol. Thanks for taking us hell no folks along on your adventures! Its fun to watch in my warm home in Arizona.

Good morning Jay, it’s finally started getting cold here in Nebraska. I always sit outside on Sunday mornings to have my coffee and watch nature and watch your videos. We had snow flurries last night and 17° this morning. Almost makes me feel like I’m there with you. I just wanted to let you know how much joy I get from watching your videos. Up here in northern Sweden some of us usually bring a hand-winch (if there isnt one mounted on the snowmobile already). If you get stuck and there is a tree or something, you can use that to pull the snowmobile up from either being stuck or too step uphill. Always nice to see you fix about the cabin. Have a good one
I'm going to sweden next month to experience the winter there for the first time. I will West of Dorotea. Any tips on what (not) to do by any chance? Tack så mycket på förhand
@@Lazarus-aap I hope you have a pleasant time "up here". Depends on what you are doing. If you are gonna go with snowmobiles, I would recommend staying on the snowmobile lanes as a default. Bring spare clothes, firewood, starter, lighter, and something to grill (swedish Falukorv and/or 'pinnbröd'). If you just mean what to avoid to do in general during winter, I would say go out in the woods alone during heavy snowfall/really cold nights are to be avoided. Make sure people know where you are, as cellphone reception can be spotty. If you prepare for the worst, you can survive a long time even during the dark winter months out in the woods. :)
Jay, just came across your vlog. Noticed the hard starting of your Honda gen or inverter. If that veg oil is solid then the motor oil in gen is thicker as well. Warm by stove longer, avoid some thermal shock to aluminum and steel motor components. Let carb warm up so fuel will atomize. Remove spark plug and pull rope to distribute oil somewhat then reinstall plugs. One tip on initial start is pull cap off spark plug and just loosely set plug cap back on the plug. This will create a gap between cap and plug which greatly increases elec resistance thus a bigger&hotter spark. Should help on cold/flooded motor. Let motor warm up before hittin revs and load.
Were those the Northern Lights?! W O W!!! I wouldn't have gone to bed - couldn't take my eyes off them! Spectacular!!! Thx for the share!!!! Stay bundled, Sir~
I see you using the little firestarter pucks...if you want a homemade solution, take cardboard egg cartons, fill each egg spot with wood chips (buy a bag of hamster cage bedding, it's cheap) then melt down cheap candles and dump the wax into each of the wood chip pockets. You can just tear them off as needed, they burn hot and for quite awhile to get the fire going.
Me and my kids just made 4 flats of those fire starters. We save the sentsy wax through out the year. I use chainsaw sawdust and add some hardwood pellets, with a small pouch of lint from the dryer on the bottom. Amazing fire starters.
@@judyanderson8782 I have never had an issue. Not sure about the wax, but the oil is used in lamps and just burn off. I have used just wax and dryer lint in boil ups with the Kelly kettle and there was never any residue left behind soni think in a stove it would be fine
Hey Jay, happy for you to have arrived at the Cabin as early as it is! That feeling of first fire sure is indescribable and you’ve definitely deserved much enjoyment out there with all the work this past season. Sit back and soak it in!
Jay, can I make a suggestion? Load the wood stove when you leave the cabin, then on arrival light the stove put the generator indoors and carry out your normal arrival stuff. Warming cabin and genny ready to go 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I don’t think Jay would want to stick around waiting for the woodstove fire to go out completely and metal to cool down etc just to place wood inside for lighting the next time. I wouldn’t. Wood/kindling next to the stove ready to go in is just as efficient. Plus you don’t have to wait around as the temperature drops to do what you suggested.
Hi Jay, my grand-daughter watch the vid with me and said "hey he makes his taco bake just like we do" and I told her that we are both Northerners both you and us as well. It's how we do things up here. Thank you for posting. It's why we live here :)
Good that the cabin survived unscathed. When the boggan got stuck, unhitch and get snowmobile to an area of traction then run a length if rope back to boggan and pull it up rather than hauling all of the heavy gear by hand. Stay warm!
This popped up in YT. I only like the cold if I'm well wrapped up. This would have been 20 degrees too far for me! You Canadians are tough. Appreciate the endless setting up of different camera angles/perspectives in that bitter cold.... plus you were out with the drone. Stunning night sky shots with the Northern Lights. Notice you slipped in footage of a lone spraying plane; our skies (UK) are laced with them regularly. Toxic games of 0's and X's. Enjoyed the vid though, Jay.
I'm just finishing up my cabin this next year. The coldest day I've had here is 0°, no temperature at all!! I look forward to watching you work on your cabin while I finish mine. Nice job!
Great video we have a cabin close to Edmonton it is always colder in there then it is outside And I always have my fire wood ready in the cabin. So when I bring one inside I I light the fire so it can start to warm up inside while bring the rest in. Have a great week
Hey bud, ground floor windows, make shutters with lots of nails facing out same as an outside door. You can also use bucksaw blades along the outside window sills. Keep the bears away from easy access. I’d have started that fire on the first pass around the cabin to get the heat going but each to their own. Nice cabin, nice location, great video
Watching from the UK where we don't get much snow and i'm very jealous. Absolutely beautiful winter scenery. You guys are truly blessed. Take care out there. 👍

I know that the temperatures are very low, but to think you can motor ski on the lakes in the Winter is fantastic and of course ice fishing 🐟 I am enjoying the posts very much. ❤
Just curious, so your friend would sit and wait the fire out? Wait until all the wood was completely burnt out with no hot ambers left so as to fill the stove with wood for the next trip without it catching fire again.
@@BigRiverLabrador easy enough to do... the morning you leave, clean out the fireplace (scoop into a metal bucket as normal) then relay the wood. Common practice, yes.
If not a pre-laid fire in the stove, at least 24 hrs worth of dry wood and a full kindling / splits bucket ready and stored indoors. It always amazes me how little firewood you have on hand. Most folks I know, try to get at least 6 to 12 months ahead of the game.
@@daviddarlingauthor it’s just not practical to sit and wait out a fire to completely go out just to place wood in a stove for next time. That Same ready-wood/kindling can be placed next to the stove to place inside on the next visit without hanging out in a cabin or tent as the temperature drops just to do as you explained. If you go back and watch Jay’s “Your questions answered” video from about a week ago, he explains why he doesn’t do this. Why none of us do this.
I really like the drone shots over the lake with the setting sun. I always enjoy your fires in your custom made stove. Great video! Oh yeah, pulled pork nachos!
Good job and lots of effort! Some tips from the arm chair frontiersman..; 1) always clean the ash from the stove at the end of a visit and pre build the fire. You can keep the first evening worth of wood inside. Light the stove before you do anything else. 2) never burn plywood ends. It’s full of glues and chemicals which are harmful. 3) what’s wrong with just using a cooler in winter? Plenty cold out to keep perishables fresh and you can save on gas.. 4) one can of gas for the whole trip? For generator and snowmobile? Looks cozy and really fun. The challenges are worth it
Love the little oven on your stove. As cold as it is up there, have you ever heard of cutting a piece of foam board in the shape of a toilet seat to keep your bottom warm in the out house? We loved that in ours! Glad you had a fun restful trip.

I love the simple cabin lifestyle, peace and quiet all the bs in the world doesn't matter anymore. Personally, I don't own a cabin but a friend has 4 cabins in 2 different locations and I can use them whenever I want. I love to take a sauna bath in winter and go out and roll in the snow and when one is lucky the spirits are dancing in the sky. I live above the Arctic Circle in Sweden, the start of this winter has been insane, very little snow so the reindeer are still roaming halfway down the mountains (normally they would have been at a lower altitude in the forest) and the temperature is also a lot higher than normal tomorrow the forecast say it will be 2-3 + celsius, last week we had -25 but most of the days so far have just been -5 to -10.
Something about your own place to escape to for solitude, in the bitter cold and getting it warmed up and comfortable to enjoy some peaceful time to yourself. Any man would love to have something like this. I know I would.

Next to the stove ready for use works. My point was a little bit of preparation would maybe help. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
When you hear that snow squeeking it is mighty cold ❄️❄️❄️🌬️🌬️
Brrrrrrrrrrrrr………great video!
Let the adventures begin!!!
Leaving ashes in the stove, for a season, is not good. Humidity and potash, create lye and lye will eat/corroid through the metal.
Stay warm!
7:02 I could tell how cold it was just by the sound of the crunching snow. :) So Canadian. Laughs.
Good to see you back jay. And good call always safety numbers.
Thank you for sharing the beauty of winter 🥶 ❤🥶
Good to see the cabin in such good shape this year! Thank you for bringing us along.
Enjoyed the vid though, Jay.
woke up to a dusting of snow on the ground this morning in Kentucky, and an amazing cabin video! Let the good times start!
I'm also in ky and only got a dusting.i love winter but my 68 year old body doesn't like it.
You, my good sir have just earned yourself a new subscriber, absolutely loved this video from start to finish 👊
No better way to start my Sunday morning than watching Jay’s video at his cabin. Cheers my friend.
while sipping on a hot cup of coffee 😊
It makes my soul happy to see you brewing real coffee 😊
I don’t believe I could take the cold like you do beautiful scenery and thanks for taking me along. From NC, USA.
I'm just finishing up my cabin this next year. The coldest day I've had here is 0°, no temperature at all!! I look forward to watching you work on your cabin while I finish mine. Nice job!
Yes, butter is better in taste and health wise. Glad you are back at the cabin. That was cool how much small wood pieces you have. 👏🏻👏🏻
Take care.
Great video we have a cabin close to Edmonton it is always colder in there then it is outside And I always have my fire wood ready in the cabin. So when I bring one inside I I light the fire so it can start to warm up inside while bring the rest in. Have a great week
Your really need to make a carpet bag for the wood...LoL!!
Will make your life so much easier!
Holy smokes you've grown so much since I first subscribed to you at 20k! My hat is off to you Jay. I'm glad you decided to follow your dream and succeeding at it.
Wow! Wow! ❤ Wow! Here in Great Britain 🇬🇧 we grumble about -6 cel … I know … wimps! 😮 I can’t get over you negotiating the frozen lake. Awesome! I know that the temperatures are very low, but to think you can motor ski on the lakes in the Winter is fantastic and of course ice fishing 🐟 I am enjoying the posts very much. ❤
That was awesome. Had a fun time hanging out with ya. - Surry Virginia
Friends always had wood in the stove, ready to light, for the next visit. Also in case of emergencies... it was ready to go.
@@daviddarlingauthor We always did this in our cabin, it apparently chaps BRL's a** tho :P. Both good methods.
Great fun Jay. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I really like the drone shots over the lake with the setting sun. I always enjoy your fires in your custom made stove. Great video! Oh yeah, pulled pork nachos!
Good job and lots of effort! Some tips from the arm chair frontiersman..;
1) always clean the ash from the stove at the end of a visit and pre build the fire.
The challenges are worth it
Love that your supporting CG products. Keep it Canadian
Are you in Northern Ontario ?
@jackiegaudette6225 no. I live near Toronto
I thought he was wearing a Canada 🇨🇦 Goose jacket ?!
Love the little oven on your stove. As cold as it is up there, have you ever heard of cutting a piece of foam board in the shape of a toilet seat to keep your bottom warm in the out house? We loved that in ours! Glad you had a fun restful trip.
Sound of wood and snow is amazing.
Love from Britain 😊♥️🇬🇧🙏
Thanks!
Love watching, we recently had a cold snap and a little snow in the UK, I enjoyed every minute .
Great work! I enjoyed every bit of the video. Greettings and Merry Christmas from the Dominican Republic
Welcome Home Jay. Another great season of enjoyment at your cabin. Just where you want to be… Bitter cold, not for these old bones but you young fellows,ENJOY!!! Here is to a great season….Cheers….
Just got our first snowfall in Northern Missouri US. Had to get the old 82 Honda ATC out. Fails to disappoint me. Love it man!
Loved this, Jay! We got our first snow in New Hampshire on our Thanksgiving day! Now we are in the 20’s! Awesome!☃️❄️🌬️”Vive le Vent”🎶
You must be in northern NH, I am in Southern and no accumulated snow yet.
@ Belknap County… 3-5 inches!☺️
You did good when you found this place I think it's absolutely gorgeous❤ you have that camping down pat ❤ the cabin is looking great❤😊❤ see you in the next video😊
Hi Jay, so happy you made your dream come true. Now just enjoy making it better❤
I love that cabin! I'd so like to get away from ringing phones and endless visitors and appointments. I've never been so busy since I retired. I'd just love to be by myself for a while in a place like yours with a great pile of books to read and old fashioned hearty grub. I'm from New Zealand.....
Those nachos are the bomb, Jay! I love seeing you at the cabin again!
I love your setup, and hopefully I will get a similar situation going now that I am retired. Thanks for sharing the adventure!!!
I was saying "Jay wait before you touch that choke on the generator " Lol. Thanks for another great video bro 👍
OH LAWDDD look what we've got us here. Well well well.
Me too.
We share similiar weather and here in Illinois it was unusually cold (and very windy) for this time of year! Love your channel
12/1/24 7am NC 27°F Good Morning Jay...caught your video early! Stepped outside in NC is below freezing. Then you said it was -40 which is the same Fahrenheit or celcius so my guy you aint never lied when you said COLD!😂 You are currently 38° colder than me and i am MISERABLE😂😂😂😂
Thanks for posting...i'm shivering with you!!❤
NACHOS! Now that was a great idea!
Edit:I also subscribed to Dereks channel!
- I am in SC it is currently 34°
NC dweller here too... 31 outside, 41 inside.
@@bsekisser Yikes...inside???❄️
I loved the sound of the fire being lit. This vid did not disappoint Jay.... Looking forward to future vids. Tyfs God bless you
Jay, it is so beautiful there. I truly love watching your videos.
Great video, thanks👍Living here in northern Norway,i know what kind of challenges winter can have, but i do know what great moments it can give too.
I love the winter 😊put some bubbelrap on your windows. Stay safe and healthy ! Love from Greece 😊
Great that you made it out to the cabin so early in the season. Glad you did not have any uninvited guests and I bet you slept so good! Keep the videos coming., my son and I really enjoy watching your channel.
Bloody marvellous . Regards from the UK.
Glad to see you back at your cabin. Great video.
- 6:52 If I was there, I'd make sure to bring supplies for a couple of weeks. You just *never* know what could happen that far from civilization. Always be prepared. 😊
Love your Stove and Oven set up, Shows some Stove Making skill. You must have the best ,when it gets as cold as it does there.
You got that right!
Man who cuts his own wood is warmed by it twice.
Thank You Jay 👍🏻🍺
Something about your own place to escape to for solitude, in the bitter cold and getting it warmed up and comfortable to enjoy some peaceful time to yourself. Any man would love to have something like this. I know I would.
Hi Jay! You mentioned overflow in your video. You ever take a quad on a frozen lake and hit overflow. Yup, you will be reminded in a hurry there's a heart in your chest. What a scary feeling when the slush hits your face. Thanks for sharing your videos.
18:55 bro leave the choke on lol. A little too fast? You turned it off half a second into startup. It needs to warm up.
Like an old, cold car....leave that choke open a bit.
This dude wouldnt be here without youtube lol
Reminds me of just how much I miss opening my cabin in Northern Michigan on a cold winter night. Nothing else like it. Food looks awesome 👌
Funny how you young fellas have no idea how to operate a manual choke on a carburetor😉. No experience like us old guys. That cold always requires a deft hand with the choke. Also get a nice snowmobile helmet with a heated shield. You will thank me later. Great video as always.
Fair said, most things comes with electric fuelinjection these days. Seen 2stroke mopeds and chainsaws with fuelinjection
He's learning, he's learning.😊
Jay that was so great to watch. I love all of your videos. I think you and outdoor boys have the best content by far and the most interesting content even when you’re not not doing much it just great to get a glimpse of that life.
Get rid of that toilet seat or you will freeze your butt off..Use a nice piece of 2 inch styrofoam the blue stuff it heats instantly when you sit on it... 👍
Closed cell foam, like for under a sleeping bag, is much softer.
Very good video!!! Glad to see you safe at the cabin!!!looking forward to the next one!!! Take care Jay !!!
How come you don’t wear a helmet it’s not only for safety but also for keeping the cold wind off your face?🥶🥶👍👍
I would say this was your best video so far! Excellent job Jay! And yes beef nachos
- 27:35 Only beef nachos are good. Extra jalapeños, cheese, no olives. 🌶🌶🌶🧀🌮🍻
I love em with both green and black olives , and feta cheese as well
Great video Jay. There's nothing like spending time at the cabin in the winter. Take care and stay safe.
If you are complaining about being cold while on the snowmobile that means you are not wearing enough layers and proper clothing
I lived in the NWT for 36 years, now on a Caribbean beach. Lots of memories are triggered here.
margarine is one molecule away from plastic. Put that on the ground and ants don't even touch it.
Going on a picnic while listening to my classical music is the best. Have a nice trip!
