In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to Paschendale by Iron Maiden. This is one of the more successful pairings of intensity of lyric and musical power by IM...in my opinion. I very much enjoyed this piece.
Reference Video: • Video
Hi all...I now know the opening sound was produced on the guitar. The fretboard tapping threw me off. Thanks for the clarifications...
Hi Doug, thank you for your professional insights into the music we all love. I wonder out of all the Maiden tracks your done, what has been the one that has touched you the most?
If I may, I would recommend Tears of a clown from the Book of Souls album. Steve Harris wrote it in tribute to Robin Williams.
No worries Doug, things like that say volumes about how natural your reactions really are. Thank you for these videos.
Make a react of Uriah Heep Salisbury
Also, the taps on the cymbals in the beginning are some kind of imitation to Morse code.
One of the intricacies of this song and Where Eagles Dare, is they use the sounds of war to tell the story. The tapping is Morse Code in Paschendale and you can hear a machine gun in W.E.D.
"Paschendale" will always stand as one of the greatest Late Maiden tracks. Really smart and moving.
Probably one of my favorite songs of all time. Still gets me to tear up probably about 9/10 times. It greatly highlights the pointlessness of the battle, and, by extension, war in general.
Face in the Sand, is one of my favorites too from the Dance of Death Album.
It's surely the best song from the current line up, possibly the best since 1988
Price of a mile indeed.
I put the whole Dance of Death Album at the same level as BNW and FOtD
My great grandfather was at the 2nd Battle of Ypres fighting for the British army. It was the first mass use of poison gas by the German side. Paschendale is known as the 3rd Battle of Ypres. He received a shrapnel wound to the head. He was going to be left for dead by the medics. A fellow soldier convinced other medics that he was supposed to be taken. He had a metal plate inserted into his skull. He was a true metal head! He survived to have a whole brood of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Mine was in Ypres for 2nd Battle of the Somme, San Quentin Canal, and a couple others. 30th ID "Old Hickory" US Army under overall command of Gen Rawlinson. I have his helmet and discharge paper. I never got to meet him but I do visit him in Arlington National Cemetery.
I think my great great grandfather was at Passchendaele with the Canadian forces when they relived the British, but he was at Vimy though.
Doug is now officially a Maiden fan.
Did historical research for a song.
Recognizing the visuals in the music.
Did you watch his reaction to Octavarium? I think it was more enthusiastic than to Iron Maiden pieces ;P
We've done it, friends.
We've brought another one into Maiden.
@@derekmann8239 up the Irons

This is what a reaction channel should be like. An actual reaction where you can learn something too.
Probably because its his passion and not a way to get more likes, money or subs. So rare those days :)
True some people just react for views I go and dislike those lol...
@@thelastjuiceblender5915 that’s such a d-bag move
"Better the pride that resides in the citizens of the world than the pride that divides when a colorful rag is unfurled."- Neil Peart, 'Territories.'
Doug certainly knows his music theory. So I agree, it's fun to learn about the music theory involved in what makes our favorite songs really interesting to our ears and brains.
There's a song from them called "The thin line between love and hate"... It is from the album brave new world... And I can tell it is a complete masterpiece... The melodic parts of that song are just beautiful!!!
I second that.
He definitely needs to watch that masterpiece, no one even reacts to that and comments always pick songs like Run to the Hills, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, it's getting old at this point.
Varg
I third that! Love that song!
Yes absolutely a great great track that I think Doug would appreciate
My Grandpa fought at Paschendale. He was also a coal miner, so he had a difficult life. Love the channel. Music brings us together.
No synthetizer at the intro, its a tapping lick by Adrian Smith. By Bruces words, its represents the loneliness of the flare on the dark sky before raising hell.
flare
@@ppppp789 Correct all tapping
@@n8sdr473 With the same notes as Wasted Years or the part of Losfer words.
Adrian is awesome. By the way, I've seen flares (mortars with illuminating rounds) slowly drift downward on their parachute over battlefield in the night, casting mile-long shadows of trees and small hills, and then the sounds of guns opening up. Former Yugoslavia (Serb-held Croatia, to be precise), December 1991. I was issued a proper flare gun too, but never got the chance to "use" it. I even lost it in the snow in all that mess and moving about and running and hopping on and off trucks. We found it a month later (in the pouch with 5-6 flare cartridges) after the snow had melted. Along with a dead donkey hit by 30mm AA gun.
@@megamillionfreak Jeez im form Hungary thats pretty close to us. There is an US airbase in Taszár. Adrian is the reason im started playing the guitar.
When Bruce sings "Blood is falling like the rain", that change always gives me chills. I loved this reaction :)
The way that line is sung, it really gets me. It's fabulous.
The sudden change in the music...his wailing voice...same for me, chills everytime! I frickin' love this song!
I can see it now. Doug grows his hair really long. Begins banging his head uncontrollably. And has a sudden penchant for leather.

As a kiwi it always brings the emotion out. Our darkness ever day over 3k killed in a single day.
The drumming in that song is simply unreal. Nicko McBrain truly is a great, great drummer. He has his flaws, but his unconventional style is a huge part of Maiden's sound.
Drumming definitely plays a big role in that song. Love it.
Especially live. He changes the tempo between sections like an absolute master.
(I don't mean the feel or the meter but actually shifting tempo).
You know, Nicko used to play with the Pat Travers Band in the 70s. He and Pat Travers didn't see eye to eye, so they parted ways. Pat's lose was Maiden's gain.
Yeah right of the bat where he taps off S.O.S. with the drumsticks.
Pashendale is the most visual song I've ever heard. It is structured and performed in such way that I just from the song alone can practically see this unnamed soldier shivering in the trench under the cannon fire, getting ready for his last fight, running through no man's land and finally getting killed by a machine gun.
This is so powerful and so epic that I always get a chills listening to this.

Probably my favourite by Iron Maiden. Especially the part that begins with "Cruelty has a human heart...", always gets me.
"swore I heard the angels cry" is mine
My favorite aswell. They have so many great classics, but I think they never reached that monumental density in their songwriting. before or after.

@wespozo No everything about the live version is better in all aspects.
We know we turned Doug into a metal head when he only notices orchestral arrangement like six minutes into the song even though it's been there from the very beginning.
One of their masterpieces, in my opinion. The best story-telling Metal band of this world sings about the cruelty, the darkness, the horror and the pains of war in Paschendale - and of war in general, of course. Very explicit, very deep, very true, very moving. It is a call of frustration and pain. I shed tears every time I listen to it.
Thanks a lot, Doug Helvering, for presenting, analysing and honoring this song.
It's interesting that you mention World War I poem, 'In Flanders Field'. When Maiden would perform this song live, Bruce would recite a few lines from 'Anthem For Doomed Youth' by Wilfred Owen.
Try "To Tame A Land". One of Maidens underrated epics.
Aye, brilliant song. Some of the words from Dune that Bruce manages to sing amaze me :)
@@6thUser You know what I mean. Poeple usually mention Hallowed be thy name, Seventh Son or Alexander the Great as the long epic songs but this one is often overlooked imo.
Was also called "Dune" in the making, until the copyright troll came out from under the bridge.
It is a great song. The last part of the song is inspired by "Asturias".
I think the Full Pice of Mind is absolutly brilliant - it is one of the few albums that have no weak Point! Still Live - Phantastic Song!

Great analysis of Pashcendale Doug. One of my favorites. :) Along the same lines of "War sucks!" is another Maiden underrated gem: Afraid to Shoot Strangers.
The lyricism in this song is unreal. ‘Blood is falling like the rain’ that line always gives me chills

Heart wrenching song. This and 'The Longest Day' hit this veteran's heart. Thanks for the thoughtful breakdown, Doug.
Nicko tapping the high-hats represents the Morse Code telegraphs which were the main mode of communication in the day.
I never knew that. They have little easter eggs like this in some and it's always nice learning a new one
Please!!! POWERSLAVE!! That solo Is one of my favorite. DOUG YOU ARE AWESOME. Greetings from México.
Favourite maiden song!
Another metal song about this same battle is called The Price Of A Mile from the Art Of War album by Sabaton. It's a bit shorter and doesn't take the same first-person perspective, but it does still capture the emotions around that battle and also gives some of the numbers on the battle of Passchendaele. "Six miles of ground has been won, half a million men are gone." Definitely add this one to the list for a future Daily Doug.
Very nice! I will recommend "THE NOMAD" for the next monday. Just the another masterpiece of Iron Maiden. I will say again Greetings from Croatiaa!!! (And Doug...#staymetal #uptheirons) 🤘🤘💖
If Iron Maiden ever do a live orchestral show, I'd love to see Doug involved in that.
Your videos are so much better than other "react" videos, I don't even want to call them reacts, because I think that almost is insulting. I just love to hear your thoughts about all these songs, because of you technical musical knowledge you really help to describe things about the songs from an angle that most people, me included, cannot easily do themselves.
Again, super interesting, thanks for continuing to make these videos!
Agreed....this kind of thing is what I look for in a reaction! Way to go Doug!
Absolutly Agree, Dude !
The Charismatic Voice is also a good channel - that and Doug :-)
Honestly as a music enthusiast these reactions have helped me really understand what it is I really truly love about this band. When their songs end I have this very fulfilling feeling and sense of satisfaction that washes over me that I dont get with other bands. This band is very special.. Thank you.
adrian is tapping his guitar, it's not a keyboard😊

It's the best when they make the instrument sound like another instrument or like nature or man made sounds
Exactly it's not a keyboard it's tapping on the guitar, there are a little keyboards but it's not as prominent as the guitar.
Adrian is one of the worlds best rockguitarist same with Dave. 🙏
@@aceca I'm not quite agreed, because there are lots of better guitarrists than him... besides, I think Adrian is using the same "Wasted years" pattern over and over again for composing. What happened to the creativity? I like Iron Maiden, but until their "Fear of the dark" album, mostly.
Fun fact that a lot of people seem to miss or forget, that quiet drum sequence in the beginning is morse code.
Do you know what it says?
It was supposed to feel like morse code i think. It doesn't actually translate, it wasn't until empire of the clouds until they actually shoehorned in actual morse code.
@@mekmekare SOS i think
@@jasminm984 cool! I remember “London calling” by the clash ends with SOS in morse too :D
Really?......I didn't notice that.....thanks for the tidbit
I think that with three guitars they can add so many progressions and different sounds at same time which makes their songs sound so good and complex.
So much to unpack here- @8:46- this grinding riff just feels WW1- the industrialized slaughter of humans on a massive scale. This song is so strange because it is easily one of their greatest yet it's on a CD that is kind of tame lyrics and instrument-wise. The song just grabs you by the throat and throws you against the wall. I have a picture of my Great Grandfather behind a .30 cal in WW1 and I am instantly transported to his time when I listen to this- it is a timeless tribute to the lost humanity of that era. I frequently get emotional listening to this song.
Waiting for The Duellist, my favorite from the Powerslave album
👍🏼
Great vocals on the song...the way bruce soars
My favorite guitar duel of all times, introducing Harris as the referee
#$#$ yes, I was requesting and waiting for this one. As much as I love their earlier stuff I think this is Maiden's best song. There is a maturity in the songwriting where all the parts work seamlessly together. There is subtle orchestral stuff added to reinforce the song without overshadowing it. Bruce brings exactly what is needed in his vocal performance, extremely emotive. Glad the second Bruce harmony caught your ear, it's where the song peaks for me. As great as it sounds it was so wise to bring it in only at the end to bring it all to a climax. I'm happy with any Maiden from here on out, probably enough good songs to keep Maiden Mondays going for at least a year!
The tapping on the high hats that you thought could represent time ticking away are actually meant to represent the tapping out of messages in Morse code.
The poem more associated with the song is Anthem for Doomed Youth by Wilfred Owen, another WWI poet. They play a recording of Bruce reading the poem to introduce the song at performances.
Here's a link to it.
www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/47393/anthem-for-doomed-youth
And for the record, Owen's poetry is so much better than McCrae's -- people get warm fuzzy feelings over McCrae's jingoism calling for more young bodies to jump into the reaping machine of the war, while Owen tells them not to go, "The old lie: dulce et decorum est pro patria mori."
There are literally songs from every Iron Maiden album that can be recommended to you.
OMG!!! You're covering Paschendale! I got a glass of wine and a cigar for this one - one of my all time favorite 6-man Maiden songs... Maybe Starblind next?.. (while covering Adrian Smith songs)
"They been moving at a chromatic 3rd relationship".. Me: "that's good right?"

One of my favorite Maiden songs of the whole lot. The live performance of this on the Death on the Road tour (DVD) is incredible.
I’ve always loved it when Bruce would harmonize the vocals in their songs.
They tend to record as close to live as possible now, basically if they can’t replicate it on stage they won’t do it. But vocal harmonies should be fairly easy with Adrian at their disposal, he’s got a great voice himself and it’s a shame they don’t use it very much. His warm lower tones compliment Bruce’s highs perfectly on Wasted Years.
I was a bigtime Maiden fan in high school and into college, but kind of fell out of fandom around 1991. For about 20 years I just wasn't really aware of them. Then, I heard Paschendale and realized I was missing out on a LOT of awesome music that had happened. Paschendale was my gateway to a ton of great stuff I'd been missing in the intervening decades ... but it's still probably my favorite of what, for me, is "new" Maiden.
This literally just happened to me, last album I bought was seventh son, now I really realize I’ve been missing something...

I liked Iron Maiden when I was young because my cousin gave me the Live After Death CD. But Dance of Death was the first Maiden CD I bought for myself and this track in particular just blew me away. This and the title track, Dance of Death.
My dad got this CD in 2003 when I was 11. I still always get goosebumps with the solos in those two songs! I absolutely knew the album by heart after some time. I could take a shower during the CD, sing in my head, return to my bedroom and hear that Im only two words off haha. Ive seen them 7 times since, and 8 was scheduled for 2020, now 2022🤘 Sabaton and Nightwish are also nice rabbitholes, and amaaazing performers 👌

This song makes you feel as if you are actually there, you feel chills over your spine. It's so powerfull, a true masterpiece.
Two parts make me love this song. The first verse when the singer comes in hard with "LAYIN LOW IN A BLOOD FILLED TRENCH" and the beastly riff after I think the second symbol break. Dananananaana nananana nana danananaa ananannanan nana
Edit: oh yeah.
The line "the sounds of guns can't hide their shame". Is a slapper.
You should really check out the live version of this. Brings this song to another level
One of the most visually inspiring moments in rock history. "Rush of blood and over we go" (hawk cries) the tiny moment of time as they begin and then the ratta-tat-tat guitar-guns as they scramble forward from the foxholes into their death and the blues guitar of repeated agony. Brilliant work and nice analysis. Thank you.
Always a pleasure hearing the breakdown of these songs adding some understanding to how the music moves us.
Really enjoy your channel. I'm in no way a musician, just a soon to be middle aged man that's stuck with the heavy/rock bands that I've been listening to since I was a kid. These breakdowns of my favourite songs put them in a new perspective for me, I must have listened to Paschendale 100 times - never realised that it was so well composed. I’d like to request one of Revelations or The Talisman which are interesting musically and lyrically. Thank you.
thanks for the video! that solo section you did twice is one of the most "visual" pieces of music i ever heard.
i picture it like that:
-the reoccuring break with kickddrum/cymbal/powerchords symbolizes artillery impact while you and your squadron are in the trench waiting for the signal to attack.
-that moment of "silence" means your artillery barrage is over -> intense silence
-the guitars setting in are the thundere whistles from you superior officers and set off the attack
-first solo is you and your comrades climbing the ladder outta the trench, getting "orientation" and starting the assault, enemy fire sets in
-second solo is "all goes to crap". i visualize slow motion, stumbling, comrades getting wounded, screams. the guitar tones climb and climb but just wont reach the top, except for the final tone, which, for me, is a jump into cover
-Bruce describes what you see whlle taking cover and looking around - slaughter. still you gather yourself and attack again
-third solo is you attacking again, but somehow your inner fire is gone. third solo lacks the fire, deep down you know its your end. solo ends with your death on a low note. without being spectacular, since your death is just a single one in a storm of deaths, or notes played in a maiden solo, so to speak.
Bravo maiden!

The ticking drum thing is also a morse code drumming I think. May I make two requests?
One is any of the Starblind, Isle of Avalon, When the Wild Wind Blows (En Vivo version), Heaven Can Wait (Studio or 1988 live version), Sea of Madness, Stranger in a Strange Land or just the entire Somewhere in Time album by Maiden please?
The other is Cristina Deutekum doing either or both of the queen of the night arias in Magic Flute or Martern Aller Arten? Or maybe Don Giovanni or Figaro overture?
Thanks for doing this. This tune never gets enough attention.
I like in Maiden a lot that they create those war theme epic songs without actually gloryfying war itself. They really can merry melodic, uptempo songs with tragedy without sounding silly like many metal bands. BTW: Paschendale has also orchestrated version somewhere in youtube which was originally released as a B-side of a single - they moved all those orchestral parts more to the front - nice to listen as well.

Love your reaction, you seem genuinely moved by this song. And I get it, it always makes me tear up as well! I think that is the greatest thing about this song, it really manages to make you feel a glimpse of the pain and desperation those poor men must have felt.
I once went on a field trip to Passchendaele and Ypres when I was studying history. It's really baffling when you're walking through that area and you pay notice to all the graves/graveyards there. Temple of Shadows. Their best album! Nice request bro.
Fantastic analysis Doug! I love your ear and how you figure out the progressions without the aid of an instrument. I require my guitar as a guide for my ear...An inside joke here. I got a great laugh toward the end of the song when Bruce overdubs his vocals. You said, "Two Bruces"..."Bruce Bruce" was Dickenson's stage name when he was with Samson before joining Maiden. And that was actually taken from an old Monty Python comedy sketch where all the guys' names were Bruce, called "Bruce's Sketch"...

The entire Dance of Death album is CRIMINALLY underrated. It is also the last studio album of Iron Maiden where Bruce still has his voice fully intact (without straining) and where the band could still write epic songs, but also short and heavy ones. It's my second favourite of the reunion albums, being only slightly behind Brave New World.
I never got why it doesn't get as much love as most of their other stuff. For me this album (together with Brave New World) is the perfect middle ground between the simpler but iconic older albums and the newer ones that are musically more interesting but less recognizable.
I agree completely. There’s not a song that isn’t great. And you get to hear Nicko use a double bass pedal for the first and only time on a Maiden album!
Agree about being another great Iron Maiden album that indeed for some reason that I do not understand doesn’t seem so well received by some fans. It is also my favorite after Bruce’s return.
Do not agree about Bruce’s voice remark.
@@antoniodesousa2555 yeah Bruce's voice is great on a matter of life and death and final frontier...talisman proves that one. And Bruce's voice deepened a bit on BOS but understandable considering age and the tumors
This is a great album. My only downside on DOD is that soundwise is not the best. Have always felt that something was lacking on the mix or mastering, maybe it's a bit too compressed to my liking and its a bit faiguing to listen. BNW on the other side soundwise is great.

Iron Maiden's masterpiece of masterpieces. The power and emotion evoked in this song are unparalleled even amongst Maiden's extraordinary catalog.
Hi Doug, to rehearse for one of their albums Iron Maiden lived in Flanders for a couple of months. During their stay they went to visit the trenches of World War 1 which are very well preserved in West-Flanders. It left an impression with them and I believe the inspiration to write this song came from that visit. Greetings from Flanders + keep up the good work!

@@artmooneyblog sounds like DT Dance of eternity, 128 changes in 6 minutes www.reddit.com/r/Metal/comments/mz6ro/dream_theater_the_dance_of_eternity_128_time/
@@jamesderekeikeland9048 dreamtheater.fandom.com/wiki/Scene_Seven:_I._The_Dance_of_Eternity - I think that's 'only' 108. Let's ask Doug to count them! :D
Thanks for the great response to the cool song?
At the beginning and at the end of the song, not a synthesizer sounds, but an ordinary electric guitar (played by the technique of tapping - this is when the sound is played on the fretboard with strokes of your fingers.)
Great job, I love watching your videos, these live-reactions are priceless!
I would recommend Wasted Years from Somewhere in Time for this segment......
It's a great track but not much to analyse compositionally for Doug.
@@jackclements2163 Thats a fair point
