In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to Paschendale by Iron Maiden. This is one of the more successful pairings of intensity of lyric and musical power by IM...in my opinion. I very much enjoyed this piece.

Hi Doug, thank you for your professional insights into the music we all love. I wonder out of all the Maiden tracks your done, what has been the one that has touched you the most?
If I may, I would recommend Tears of a clown from the Book of Souls album. Steve Harris wrote it in tribute to Robin Williams.

One of the intricacies of this song and Where Eagles Dare, is they use the sounds of war to tell the story. The tapping is Morse Code in Paschendale and you can hear a machine gun in W.E.D.

My great grandfather was at the 2nd Battle of Ypres fighting for the British army. It was the first mass use of poison gas by the German side. Paschendale is known as the 3rd Battle of Ypres. He received a shrapnel wound to the head. He was going to be left for dead by the medics. A fellow soldier convinced other medics that he was supposed to be taken. He had a metal plate inserted into his skull. He was a true metal head! He survived to have a whole brood of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Adrian is awesome. By the way, I've seen flares (mortars with illuminating rounds) slowly drift downward on their parachute over battlefield in the night, casting mile-long shadows of trees and small hills, and then the sounds of guns opening up. Former Yugoslavia (Serb-held Croatia, to be precise), December 1991. I was issued a proper flare gun too, but never got the chance to "use" it. I even lost it in the snow in all that mess and moving about and running and hopping on and off trucks. We found it a month later (in the pouch with 5-6 flare cartridges) after the snow had melted. Along with a dead donkey hit by 30mm AA gun.

Pashendale is the most visual song I've ever heard. It is structured and performed in such way that I just from the song alone can practically see this unnamed soldier shivering in the trench under the cannon fire, getting ready for his last fight, running through no man's land and finally getting killed by a machine gun.

So much to unpack here- @8:46- this grinding riff just feels WW1- the industrialized slaughter of humans on a massive scale. This song is so strange because it is easily one of their greatest yet it's on a CD that is kind of tame lyrics and instrument-wise. The song just grabs you by the throat and throws you against the wall. I have a picture of my Great Grandfather behind a .30 cal in WW1 and I am instantly transported to his time when I listen to this- it is a timeless tribute to the lost humanity of that era. I frequently get emotional listening to this song.

#$#$ yes, I was requesting and waiting for this one. As much as I love their earlier stuff I think this is Maiden's best song. There is a maturity in the songwriting where all the parts work seamlessly together. There is subtle orchestral stuff added to reinforce the song without overshadowing it. Bruce brings exactly what is needed in his vocal performance, extremely emotive. Glad the second Bruce harmony caught your ear, it's where the song peaks for me. As great as it sounds it was so wise to bring it in only at the end to bring it all to a climax. I'm happy with any Maiden from here on out, probably enough good songs to keep Maiden Mondays going for at least a year!

They tend to record as close to live as possible now, basically if they can’t replicate it on stage they won’t do it. But vocal harmonies should be fairly easy with Adrian at their disposal, he’s got a great voice himself and it’s a shame they don’t use it very much. His warm lower tones compliment Bruce’s highs perfectly on Wasted Years.

thanks for the video! that solo section you did twice is one of the most "visual" pieces of music i ever heard.
    i picture it like that:
-the reoccuring break with kickddrum/cymbal/powerchords symbolizes artillery impact while you and your squadron are in the trench waiting for the signal to attack.
-that moment of "silence" means your artillery barrage is over -> intense silence
-the guitars setting in are the thundere whistles from you superior officers and set off the attack
-first solo is you and your comrades climbing the ladder outta the trench, getting "orientation" and starting the assault, enemy fire sets in
-second solo is "all goes to crap". i visualize slow motion, stumbling, comrades getting wounded, screams. the guitar tones climb and climb but just wont reach the top, except for the final tone, which, for me, is a jump into cover
-Bruce describes what you see whlle taking cover and looking around - slaughter. still you gather yourself and attack again
-third solo is you attacking again, but somehow your inner fire is gone. third solo lacks the fire, deep down you know its your end. solo ends with your death on a low note. without being spectacular, since your death is just a single one in a storm of deaths, or notes played in a maiden solo, so to speak.
    Bravo maiden!
    War sux!

They really can merry melodic, uptempo songs with tragedy without sounding silly like many metal bands. BTW: Paschendale has also orchestrated version somewhere in youtube which was originally released as a B-side of a single - they moved all those orchestral parts more to the front - nice to listen as well.
