My wife was gifted a bottle of the Kavalan Vino Baroque by a Taiwanese customer... unfortunately she doesn't like whiskey... fortunately I do!😂 Enjoyed it immensely!
Daniel and Rex, glad to hear Kavalan getting such great reviews! The distillery is located in my grandmother's hometown in Yilan, Taiwan. Before it was given that name, the natives used to call the surrounding area Kavalan, actually pronounced "Cava-LAN". It's got a crazy price tag on it, even in Taiwan (even in the distillery shop), but the Taiwanese borrowed that from the French and Scots - brands like Johnnie Walker, Remy Martin, Hennessy, etc. have the lion's share of the liquor market in Taiwan. And so comes the thought that goes into the packaging and marketing. There also used to be a Japanese colonial presence in Taiwan, and so the packaging style is also very reminiscent of a lot of premium Japanese goods. Keep up the good work!
Watching from Japan. I just ordered a bottle of the Kavalan Solist Cask Strength Single Cask. I will have it in hand Sunday night. You guys cost me money!
Love Kavalan! Fun fact: aside from their distillery in Eastern Taiwan, they have a lot of showrooms in Taipei which give out free samples. Best part of this is that they'll let you try out the Solist Cask Strength expressions! Not ashamed to say that I went back for seconds for the Solist Sherry Cask. Cheers!
If one is in Taipei I would recommend making the trip to Yilan to visit the distillery (~an hour long journey), where a comprehensive range of their whiskies can be sampled and purchased. The reason why I say this is because it is sometimes not possible to find their entire range of whiskies at these showrooms. Cheers
American distribution of kavalan cask strength is not marketed as solist even though it’s the exact same thing. I got the sherry cask for $99 because I think place selling it didn’t realize cask strength was the same as solist and that the going price was over $200. Kicking myself for not buying multiple bottles
Kavalan is one of my favorites! Being in Asia (Singapore), it is actually really easy to find for me ;) they have a whole Solist series for cask strength whiskies all with different cask finishings, and they’re all amazing. Hope you get to try them someday, cheers!
Love the Kavalan 😊 Attended a brand vertical with Ian Chang a few months ago. Was one of the most interesting Masterclasses I've ever attended. The story of their processes is fascinating. ❤❤❤
Going back to my notes on the Kavalan Sherry Oak... Oloroso sherry, aged 6-7 years. On the nose: Dark raisins, dark brown sugar, Rose's, AND DRIED LEAVES! if you get a chance, the Solist Vinho Barrique - STR cask is the most interesting Kavalan I've had. Even darker than the Sherry Cask (if you can believe it!) and a more diverse, yet cohesive, array of aromas and flavours. It also tips the scale at 54.8% ABV (somehow it maintains a creamy, round, and rich texture). Full bodied and sweet with a light saltiness.
I've had many a bottle of the Kavalan Solist single cask sherry and found some to be phenomenal whereas others to be just okay; thankfully the cask number is stated clearly on the bottle so if you like it grab more of the same cask (I live in Taiwan but if you visit here these bottles are not that hard to come by).
over the years i collected 5 bottles of 750ml Kavalan Soloist blue label. i haven't popped one open yet. they are hard to find even in taiwan. i had to go to the distillery to get some but they are always running out.
Honestly, me either. I've always walked past it at the store and I have it on my list of brands to buy, but never really felt the itch to yet. On another note, being as you are well versed in the scotch business world, as I'm subscribed to your channel, what are your thoughts on the upcoming Diageo owned distillery strikes that will be going on from September 17 through the end of the month? While it's a short amount of time on strike, how could it affect the overall scotch whisky business?
@@shengyang021185 Strikes are short term and won't seriously affect inventory of whisky in the long run. BUT, if consumers are sympathetic with the workers they may stop buying their whisky. However, I seriously doubt consumers are hearing the news about the strike as mainstream media don't talk about whiskey outside of the UK. I'll do more research on the topic and talk about it in a live stream.
Kavalan now has an Oloroso Sherry Cask release. I live in Taiwan and am a Kalavan VIP, and even with my VIP discount AND my birthday discount, it was about USD$300 for a 700ml bottle in the factory store (by comparison, the normal Sherry Cask or Sherry Oak Cask or the Vinho Baroque are about half that). I bought a bottle but haven’t tried it yet. The Oloroso also isn’t the most expensive whiskey in the shop - they have something that’s about USD$450 for a 300ml bottle! Also, the Kavalan Port Cask is even darker than the Sherry Cask in this video.
every time i go to taiwan, i get 2 bottles of kavalan soloist 750ml bottles. so far i have 5. i don't drink myself but i wanted to have the world's BEST whiskey for guests or gifting.
I have a 750 ml cask strength (made for American market but same think as solist) sherry cask kavalan, and a 1000ml bottle of of solist sherry cask. Paid $100 for each bottle. Here’s a tip... keep track of what friends you have that are going to Asia
Kavalan really needs to step up their supply/distribution, which will hopefully bring down the very high prices the vendors are currently charging here in U.S. I do have a Sherry Solist coming on special order but at a rather high price...
Rex is king! My whisky story: Found your channel a month ago...saw you guys buy whiskys...and rex buckeled them on the back seat...went buying old pulteny 12& 4roses single barrel and a beer...and buckeled the whiskeys next to me...i put on random music for my new offical new whisky them song and got this...one bourbon one scotch and one beer by John L.H... on that moment the gods of whisky smiled upon me...been a whisky fanatic ever sence
Can't believe I haven't seen this video yet. Whipper Snapper is just up the road from me. I did the tour last yr, they're doing some interesting stuff there. Love the Kavalan review guys oh and just a tip... Use the vegemite sparingly, it's a delicacy haha.
Always enjoy the whiskey vault videos! I try and see how many of the whisky’s on the wall I’ve had. Super stoked to see some SMWS bottles in the back! Slowly starting my own collection...
BTW...I know of about half a dozen Macallan M's in Calgary. They go for about $5,500 CAD. So only about $3,500 USD. 😁 You know...in case you were looking to replace the bottles for the Vault.
After 25+ years living in and traveling to Japan I have concluded that Kavalan dumps poop all over most Japanese whisky. Great value. EVA Air is now my favourite airline in Asia for a reason.
i thought japanese whisky was pretty top of the line. i collected 5 big bottles of the kavalan soloist whiskey over the years. funny thing is, i don't drink. they are for guests or gifting.
@@popoju9 I live between Japan and Taiwan traveling between the two routinely. Lots of Japanese whisky brands are not stringent and a scam while the few top notch brands stand out. But Kavalan, in my opinion, is number one in Asia.
Ok... so I propose a test. I had the vino barrique, 60 EUR a glass.... after we drank glass after glass, we decided to start looking up the price online and felt a bit stupid to just not have bought the bottle instead of at the bar XD .... anyway, if you can get it, I agree how good they say it is, it's by far my favourite. Still never got the bottle though :(
Everyone has had bottles where they enjoyed them more as they have been opened. I Have had some that took it being halfway gone before it got to its best flavor. So was wondering could you open a bottle and pour half (or whatever amount wanted) in a decanter and let sit for a bit to come out with that preferred flavor?
If you like that sort of flavor after it's been sitting for a bit, decanting it would definitely speed up the process. How much quicker though would really depend on a lot of variables. You'd just have to keep sampling until you liked it!
