I have more bottles from Kavalan than anything else. Just finished a vinho barrique. Now I need to chose between the 2019 port cask, a regular sherry solist, the sherry solist for the whisky exchange, the sherry solist for the Netherlands, another vinho barrique (which is even darker), the sherry at 46% or the Manzanilla cask.. Probably forgetting some others to =). Cheers from Belgium! 🥃

An American living in Taiwan here. One of my Taiwanese friends turned me onto this stuff, and I was blown away! Glad to see you guys giving it a showcase of sorts here.
I was a cameraman on a local (San Francisco) CBS show and I got to visit and shoot the Ka Va Lan distillery, twice. You guys really should try to make the trip... shoot, for all the publicity you guys are giving them they might just fly you out. Now, IF you feel you need to make a shoot out of it, I'd be happy to come along and run a camera for you. Have Sony FS7, willing to travel.
This UA-cam channel has opened a whole new world of whiskeys!! I can't for the option to get more whiskey under my belt and build more of a collection!! One quick question, when will the Challenge coins be replenished? I need one in my life asap!
I saw this episode and said to myself... wait a second... I then did a little digging through my whiskey pictures from when I was on my Texas Whiskey adventure and visited the Vault this past November. Turns out the final whiskey I had on my sample via Somm Z was Kavalan Vinho Barrique, Solist Cask Strength! Came with glassware and everything AND a fancy box, I have no idea if it's been reviewed but it was a wonderful dram in the Vault. Glad to see Rex and Daniel had a similar reaction to this amazing whiskey when they sampled some of them. I only hope I can find a bottle of it within a reasonable price range someday in the not to distant future.
So I just want to start by saying I started watching you guys a few months ago. I’ve been picking and choosing videos just as research for whiskeys I wanted to try. I really appreciate how you guys pull different bottles and compare. I’ve been drinking whiskey for a while and have a pretty decent collection. I often find if I haven’t tried the bottle you pull bottles I own or ones I’ve had to compare. You also have quite a bit of content so it’s been very helpful. I finally just broke down and started binge watching from the beginning . I’m about 100 episodes in, I’ve joined the Facebook and mailing list. Just wanted to thank you MBs for the great content. But now for the important part, I was in Costco and saw a bottle of Kurayoshi 12YR Malt Whiskey. I’ve never tried and for once I don’t see it on your list of videos. If you guys own it I’d love to see a video soon about it. If you don’t own it let me know and I’ll pick up two bottles and send one over so we can try it together. Just let me know.
The other day, wind blowing my Tarp around on top of my 24 foot RV that I call home, just hoping the new bungie's that I got from the dollar store were going to hold. Finally started to snow, was grateful wind stopped. Was able to stick a few chicken dogs and a $.99 can of chili in the microwave and settle down with a glass of Lagavulin 16.
This is my favorite episode of Friday Rare yet. When Rex and Daniel both have what seemed to be orgasms on camera (watch this soon folks because YT will remove it for ‘on camera orgasms’ very soon) this makes me get all excited about whisky that I usually only reserve for Islay and it’s brine. (Like burning a pirate ship full of Scotch loving dudes that also enjoyed curing ham) So I am very excited to try this. I am an electrical engineer and I visit this region frequently so I have something to look forward to. All the best to you and yours
Agree. Tried it at their distillery in 2019 and with the limit of alcohol we can bring back to the states, couldn’t bring back a bottle and had regret that for years. Can’t get my hands on a bottle even to this day.
Yup, got my dad a bottle of the sherry oak Kavalan because based on your review, he's mostly a wine drinker who dips into whiskey a couple times a week. Couldn't get my hands on the cask strength but damn the 46% is still damn good. So much depth from such a young whisky. Nice ass Daniel
The 40th King Carr Anniversary is still my favorite whiskey they've put out. It has such a deep dried fruit aroma (the strawberry preserve analogy is on point) with a complex and rich palate that blows you away. Second favorite is the Amontillado. Unfortunately, these rarer releases are $250+/750ml and more importantly sometimes really hard to find so they can't be a go-to whiskey. But I've found the Glendronach 18 Allardice to be pretty enjoyable if you like these whiskeys and far more readily available.
I have some tragic news. My friend was told by his doctor that he has to stop drinking whiskey because he has a drinking problem. Lucky for me I inherited his whiskey collection and now he just drinks beer.
the noise is back!!! Damn it Rex now I gotta go and search the ends of the earth to find that whiskey. the last time you made that noise it was with lost distillery's lossit. thank god that one was only $35 at TW.
If only you guys know how EXPENSIVE those bottles are!! Steve Kim is more than generous to send you one, let alone FOUR in a row!!! Btw, the stress is on 'Ka' rather than 'Lan'...
@@kevbev89 Well, approx. USD60 for both Pauillac & Margaux 200ml locally. There is also a 200ml version of the 40th anniversary bottle, and it's around USD66. They gave 10% discount last month, but i still didn't buy it at the end…
The Rare Whiskey Friday logo makes me think of Halloween and therefore I keep expecting spooky and or basic white girl whiskeys. However, I will accept in exchange whiskey worthy of goat sacrifice.
World shelf should also have a qualifier that is distinct enough that blind tasting you wouldn't confuse it for another established class of whiskey. IMO should stand out so those that do that get a place for recognition.
The local shop near me in the UK the owner was telling me he had a bottle of some really nice whisky at the back of the shelf and said it was given to him 10 years ago by somone and it was Kavalan whisky and I decided to buy it at £80 so probably $100 and when I opened the box I knew I had hit peak whiskey. It was the Kavalan Classic single malt and at 40% I was shocked how rich and smooth it was amazing, so amazing that when I bought it I didn't open it for 4 months but man I would buy it again as it was heavily.
Rex: "I'm going to say something unprecedented. Daniel, I love you more than as a brother. I love you as a god. I shall worship at your feet as you pour ka-vay-len all over my head. 'kay?"
Just so people know, the cask strength Kavs in the US are not called solist (not soloist by the way Daniel). Some type of TM violation I heard. So don't get thrown off if you don't see Solist on the label, WV's bottle must have come from another country. But the bottom line is that the cask strength Kavs are ridiculously good.
Nerdy question: I’m having trouble with this. Wondering if y’all can help. At what point of the process is sugar being created? It was explained to me once that barley has in it a sac containing STARCH. Although there are already sugars of a different kind present, what malting does essentially is break open the sac so that the enzymes (amylase and such) can come into contact with the starch, and that’s when the higher sugars are created, and mashing just gets them into the liquid. But then I’ve also heard that mashing actually contributes to the transformation of starch into sugar. Again, I’m aware of how nerdy this is, and I apologize. But I was trying to explain malting to a friend, and I realized I don’t actually know when sugar production begins and ends. I’d appreciate any insight. Also, we should make Kavalahan Auto Parts T-shirts. Cheers.
Just like brewing beer, the hot water not only gets the starch out of the grain, but at the right temperature triggers the enzymes to do their work converting the starches to fermentable sugars.
Thanks for the response! So mashing actually creates sugars then. So is malting just creating starch that will later become fermentable sugars in the mash tun, or are sugars being created during malting as well?
You guys should definitely do a video of all the different bottles in the vault that you currently have there a a short explanation for each in a couple parts
Daniel and Rex did you guys know that there are mustards you can buy made with Laphroaig, Balmore and Famous Grouse?? Might make an interesting taste test for you both!
Here’s a question for you all (and perhaps Daniel and Rex if they feel it’s worth talking about on their channel). I’ve seen many old bottles of whiskey in online auctions that have a low fill level. The bottles appear to be unopened so why and how has the fill level been reduced so much over the years?
Pauillac, a commune (municipality) in Bordeaux is pronounced something the the direction of paw-(l)yakk; the aux in Margaux sound just about the same as the eaux in Bordeaux
