Brian I went to NMSU up the road in Las Cruces. I road a hiking trail that is the equivalent of those UTEP trails in 1990-92 on my used 1989 26” Specialized Rockhopper and Cannondale SM 600. This is why at 52 I am always the best technical rider in any group in ride with!
So much chunk,... almost doesn’t look fun. If you pass through the DFW area, on the North side of Grapevine Lake, is the Northshore Trail. There are 6 loops that you can do individually, or you can connect them all for a super sick ride. Trails are very cared for, they’re directional. Bike wash/repair stations throughout. Nice views of the lake. Also on the south side of the lake is about a 5 mile loop trail called the Horseshoe Trail.
El Paso also has Franklin Mountain State Park, with about 70 miles of techy singletrack. El Paso is definitely not the place to run weight weenie tires, or not bring tire repair supplies.
@@itzMendoza Yeah, it looks sweet. I've only ridden the stuff included in the Puzzler. Still a tough fifty miler. I'll have to look into Rough Rider next time I'm out that way.
Went to El Paso, rode Lost Dog Trail there is a section where you literally go up a rocky hill, boulders and lava rock everywhere. If El Paso altitude doesn’t kill you the rocky terrain will bring you to submission. Ride those trails with the widest tires possible and lowest PSI. Oh my God the torture.

I love L&J for breakfast but I think Carlos & Mickey’s has a better dinner! I’m also biased... I used to live right across the street from them so it was a nightly stop for me 😂
I was stationed at Bliss in '71. Didn't have MTB then and I rode a 10-speed all over. Typical Saturday/Sunday would be to ride up Scenic Drive or down Montana around the Franklyn's out to a farm road in New Mexico and up to Las Cruzes. Stop for massive amounts of fluid. Then back to the base via Trans Mountain Road. Like 106 miles. Or I'd ride down to Juarez and go in as far as I dared and then back out. It's really cool to see the trails there now. I'll have to look on MTB Project for more of them. What was your MOS/Job? I was a 05C Radio-Teletype Operator assigned to a special aviation company with aircraft at Biggs.
If you find yourself in Northwest Arkansas soon, please consider riding the Karst Loop at Hobbs State Park. It's a new fast and flowy XC loop since you last visited. I also recommend the new Sugar Creek trails in Bella Vista, new "cross stuntry" trails on the opposite side of the highway from the Back 40 trails you rode in your last Arkansas video.
Loved your clarinet solo at 13:24. Also love the box of Lucky Charms in the van. Also love the fact that you show me places I will never have the opportunity to ride. So great to see the USA from atop a mountain bike.
I saw this video and said "great, now I gotta build something gnarlier than El Paso." LMAO. glad to see you riding with the rough rider crew man thats awesome! I will be looking to have an event out there sometime in the future! Thanks for the shout out!
I'm sure folks have already told you but the tire boot is meant to be used with the tube. It is for big slices where the tube might poke through the tire. You can also use a folded dollar bill or an energy bar wrapper. The boot is for when tubeless plugs truly fail and a tube is the only way out
We have such an amazing gem here in El Paso with Mtb and bouldering. Love seeing this and there’s so much more this great city has to offer. Been watching for years and just now saw this video.
Fun to watch you make your way across the US. A friend unicycled from ocean to ocean, SanFran to Jacksonville, taking the bottom route. Did It all in one year. Enjoy the ride.
Probably wait until at least May for northern NM. Maybe June for higher altitude stuff. July and August can be a little hit-or-miss with the monsoonal rains.
Pretty awesome you came to my home town to ride. i have been watching you for 2 and half years, and i never though you would come here. thanks for a great video.
I've ridden in the Franklin mountains quite a bit. It is really rocky and jarring even with 160mm of travel. I would not recommend a craving bike there. My brand new pivot has a a nice chip in the BB from there. And every one of those plants wants to pop your tire. Those pointy ones will impale you if you arent careful. In case anyone is wondering what it is like to ride there.
Check out the brushy creek trails near Austin there is some chunky stuff out there like deception and double down I recommend finding a local to show you around there
I have also tried the Park Tire Boots and they don't seem to work at all with a tubeless setup. They only seem helpful for a standard setup with tubes where the tube holds the boot in place against the tire.
Make sure you announce when you will be in Minnesota again. This time you need to come down to the Twin Cities and ride our many trails around here. I think last year you went to Duluth, which is awesome, but there is so much more! Maybe even go to Welch Village and do some lift access downhill!
