Wow! The intrigue has kept me on the edge of my seat!! And I loved the moment by moment coverage of boarding the train. I'm impressed with your ability to adapt to the discomfort of being in an uncertain environment. One good thing- you had that entire cabin to yourselves!!!!
Just for everybody to know, there is a bus from Belgrade to Istanbul for 70 eur round trip. It departs from Belgrade on Thursdays and Sundays at 11 AM and returns from Istanbul on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 7 AM. The starting and ending point in Istanbul is Hotel Amir. It travels 12-13 hours. This is absolutely the cheapest ride possible. The name of the company is Yonca, it's Turkish and they usually have very comfortable vehicles.
