One of the best high revving power plants Toyota has developed.
With the important help from Yamaha!
Not their most reliable engine... Mine developed rod knock from taking it to 7.8k in a small pull... And yes engine oil was full
@@trick_show9469 thats funny i daily drive my XRS which has 260k+ miles. I also love to redline it almost every drive out. This thing, like my fathers 89 Toyota Pickup, will not die.
@@trick_show9469 I'll have to call that an anomly
got my runx at 290km, now at 360km of sheer abuse, needs an oil change every ~15k odd but running strong, dead equal with a mazda turbo.. she loves the abuse haha @@trick_show9469
2zz motors are amazing
Great job on the mods!
The Celica GT-S is so underrated man. It's reliable, maintenance is not a problem and it still packs punch especially in the hands of a good driver!
Lol I own one myself with few mods but I've out run some more well-known street cars. Not only do they look good but they actually are good. It's either those people in those so called 'more powerful street cars' are not so good at driving/drag racing or the Celica is just a beast haha well in the hands of a good driver it sure is.
Well, you may have reason my friend, i live in Mexico and it is easier to maintain a 2zz than a 3s gte, we didn't have the celica in Mexico so the 2zz is also in the Corolla xrs, pontiac vibe gt and matrix xrs, so if you need a 3s part you have to import from us or Japan wich is very expensive and a 2zz you can easily find parts. Here only a few people has seen a Celica before and sometimes people ask me what car am I driving, the culture here is drive a Honda civic or tsuru(sentra in other countries) (I don't have any problem with this 2 cars, they are amazing cars too) and i have win some drags against civics, and here a Celica looks greater than civic bc is different and you don't see a Celica everyday, maybe in USA is more common, so back in my point Celica is a nice car but people don't know about it.
“Look good”
Maybe if your very drunk and forgot your glasses at home
Sure the last Gen of Celtics looks good then
nice build, love the sound. yamaha knew what they were doing.
Gotta love the sound of that engine Yamaha made for Toyota. The engine sounds more like a bike engine than the average car's engine.
I have a newer gen XRS with the fat torquy engine and the main thing I regret is sound of the 2zz at 9000 rpm. God I love it!
+Nicolas Gauthier I have the coveted '03 Matrix XRS and I love the powerband, but I RARELY get to use it! The thing is, you have to be full throttle while in lift.. thats 40mph in 1st and 65mph in 2nd, I only use lift on the freeway in 2nd-3rd gear really!
It's actually an excellent job of designing a variable valve lift system like VTEC, but more elegant in the way it is actuated. Due to this system the 2ZZ gets a better torque curve than a 4AGE. If you knew anything about engine design, you would know this. Also, the 2ZZ is the lightest of the 3 engines you have mentioned, and less weight = better performance. Power isn't everything. If you knew anything about car design or physics, you would know that.
The 2zz is one of the best 4 cylinders that toyota has ever made, and this is coming from a honda lover. 180 out of the box, 6 speed transmission. Great low end torque and they take to bolt ons very well.
The 4age is a great motor, for very light cars. In order to make the same power a 2zz makes stock you have to do cams, itb's, high compression pistons and you still wouldn't have the great torque curve as the 2zz.
Toyota's 2ZZ-GE is definitely NOT known for low end torque lol.
@@HolmessonI agree. I own 2 2zz loaded cars and have had another. None of them had great low end torque
many, i love this vid, it's a true inspiration to all 2zz fanboys out there!!! that thing pulls so nicely!!!
@Surannhealz Yes people should get it right. The 2ZZ-GE has VVTL-i which does allow for a more aggressive cam profile along with a low range profile. Very similar to original VTEC though slightly different in the way it's achieved in operation.
Great engine! :P
The MR configuration resembles a FWD configuration, except that its simply at the back of the car! Thats why MR-2's and FWD Corolla's share the same engine swap options.
@LaidbackMarco Try taking the downpipe off and you'll see...It really sounds like a bike. 4AGE engines has a more deeper sound to it--especially the silvertop and blacktop with ITB.
Only reason lifts hits harder on 2zz is stock computer is tuned to reduce torque around 5k rpm and make lift seam to hit harder. In a lotus or tuned XRS I guess you can't tell as much. It is cool to show of to people in my car though.
@Azuremen i disagree, they were getting onto the idea ever since way back when they brought out the 4AGE in 1983. it went through alot of development in achieving high revving NA power, but didnt actually implement VVT til 1991. so yes honda officially beat them by 2 years, but toyota were already onto it anyway, and werent very late at all. just have a read of the 4AGE's extensive history.
I believe the transmissions would be interchangeable. Japan doesnt get too tricky with their transmission housings. Usually if 1 chassis was offered with 2 different engines, the engines and tranny's are mostly interchangeable.
wow what a sound...
great engine, i wish this engine will fit in my Vitz..
nice strong build man sounds very healthy goodjob
Oh good. Thought I was the only one hitting 250+ in my Celica xD
250+ what? Horsepower? KM/H ?
WTF?
@interceo Hold on a sec there. VTEC and VVTi are different in operation. VTEC allows for physically different camshaft profiles, but doesn't allow modification of the timing.Where as VVTi stands for Variable Valve Timing Where as VVTi stands for Variable Valve Timing, which means you retain the same cam profile you just get to rotate it in regards to crankshaft. *** Disclaimer, I own an Exige so I am not a honda fanboi and I know exactly what the 2ZZ is, I just appreciate good engines in general
2zz he's has got the vvtli not vvti the L is for lift its like a v-tec, but more brutal, it lifts the valves over 1cm when it gets to 6300rpm similar to v-tc but much better
definitely a nice build... hrad to find good N/A builds... nice car
That they did....they also made the 5.0 V8 in the new Lexus IS-F, they had a hand in the F-1 V10 in the upcoming Lexus supercar, and let's not forget the king of them all--Yamaha built the heads for the J Series motors as well, and we all know what legendary motor came from that line.....does 2jz ring a bell?
Yeah That was awesome! Keep up this type of Videos!
I love 2ZZ
Sick engine man lovin it :)
btw, castrate the aem cai to sri , on a blitz cone and bog it up inside the engine bay. High end engines need to play with SRIs. My current core spec's pfc doing almost 220 on a new oem run-in block , trd header/clutch/flyhweel/lsd/anti roll/rear strut/exos (operated and decat). c-one flywheel, typer tower bar, 4.8fd, circuit oil gear, up-ed fuel pump, sri bogged with blitz cone, tein HA superstruts, brembo gt + ssr type C 17.
Beast! Great build!
For what it's worth, this vid was taken while the guy was street tuning his engine. In other words, it was nowhere near it's best. That and the fact that it's a full interior car with 17" wheels.
@ChampGts2000 run a defouler on the O2 its like a spacer that seperates the O2 from direct path of the exhaust so it sees less flow.no more CEL .go ebay look up CEL test pipe delete
My 1zz is dead i'm thinking about 2zz swap
@Zeron18 cause its built for high RPM range like a bike engine :D
Nice build! I also have an Celica GTS, love the car. How much did it cost you to make your NA 2zz?
Know this is super old, but It'd be neat to see a car engine rev to 10k. Almsot sports bike territory 😂
My 05 xrs so far has the mwr header, cat delete, magnaflow catback, injene Cai, and both pulleys. Want to get cams next. Probably stage 2.
what a sound!
Very nice, I love it!
I'd like the pistons and cams for mine but the gas where I live is to crappy. Great job in building N/A power. You gotta test this against a K20.
Thank you! lol seriously there are many built 2zz's and results are never shared.
i agree hell i have a sock 1zzfe corolla(currently unregistered) but i have made it valve slap in 5th at 215km/h, granted took her a while to get there though :) hench why its unregistered im looking at s/cing her, she desreves it after Vslappin in 5th!
@curo72 By the mods and seeing other 2zz-ge dynos, every engine is different, but about 8300-8500rpms is about it
toyota engine classical sound i love it!
all toyota engine have a great sound:P
@interceo Just saw this vid... You do realize VTEC has had variable lift since 1989 when it was first used on the NSX? Toyota was very late to the variable lift game.
nice car I wanted one of them , they are so cute in white :-)
sure, but the Teg Type R has a ported head from the factory and lots of them tend to have 15" wheels....lol, i'd like to see a 2zz celica with 15" wheels and a ported head race against a Teg Type R...mind you, anytime I've raced one it wasn't all that difficult. The best Teg for power is the DC5 model...now that one is clearly faster/more powerful than my 2zz celica.
Your problem is the gear ratio. I've a 2zz as well. A stock 2zz with a X mission and just a straight thru will beat your spec in a 1/4 mile drag. Your current pickup will lose to a CTR 2.0 maxed out without reflash. Go on 16" and a 4.8FD and you will match. go for a Kaaz or C-one X mission and you will beat it.
If the CTR 2.0 reflashes i won't know what will happen, cos it'll be at about 260 crank/1.26 tons and you should be at 235 crank/1.17tons.
thats not true, the redline was set for stock internals, when you upgrade the internals the redline can be pushed further because of the increased strength. knowledge is power my friend
Hey did you use darton sleeves for those pistons? Or did you file the piston rings? Or did the pistons fit in perfectly?awesome video btw.
Agreed, i think 8500rpm would be the best shifting point.
nice ran to 120mph
Not too bad looks like 0-60 times in the low 6sec range, hard to tell from a 10kph rolling start your pretty much equal to the older gen Celica GT4's for staright line speed, good job :)
Freaking sweet..!!!
Yamaha played a big part in the head design of the A series motors long before the Z series.. so technically this isn't Yamaha's, "first try."
yamaha also made the badass 3SGE's and 3SGTE's in the SW20 series MR2's =D
@flip28 its in KPH so thats 0-62 MPH in 6 sec
Its because its in a heavy celica, Mines in an exige and its motor is way more built than this. This is a great effort but not fast by any means. Gearing has a lot to do as well and WHO tuned the ecu. Where was the head work done as well?
V-TEC...since 1972....all i can say, i'm big Supra fan...but who needs VVTL-i when you have Twinturbo....
@Zeron18 for the record holmes, yamaha designed, toyota made.
Yamaha is 3rd company in the world in metallurgy.
they made very good engines, i think better technology than porsche in this moment
Honda & Toyota 4 life.
Mugen models are very strong.
most cars don even reach 220 lol this is pretty good.
J thing around 220 230 hp.Engine rev higher nice.
I dunno why all you "d00dz" keep mentioning Yamaha over and over regarding this engine. Yamaha does design work for MANY engines and have done so for many years - including US domestic engines.
Amen!
its n/a... in a tiny 1.8 of course its not going to have a huge top end power, it probably doesnt make much more than 320hp, but all motor 1.8 with 320hp is still a ton of power out of a car this small
@2greek4u wondering how big are the rims??? got brake kits??? any bodykits or parts???? or is the exterior totally stock whereas mods are all in the engine's performance
That is pretty quick. But with all of those mods i would think that it would be a little faster than that. 0-100mph apx 14 secs I dont know I would just think that it would be faster with all the mods you are claiming
LOL never heard that one before, how is it a fail motor? Lower it's CR and add a turbo then it would a totally different story. It's a naturally aspirated engine, they are suppose to make less power than turboed engines.
This engine beat V-TEC yo!!!
My toyota fielder wagon has one with a 6 speed manual trying to work out easy mods for it
got any before and after dynos? Seems sort of like your real gains are down low but maybe its just my head doesn't spend a lot of time out of lift ha ha.
well the unmodified cutoff is set to 8400 on most models... you need to use power FC to change the ecu....
Its amazing that a non-rotary motor can even spin that high though! you really gotta appreciate the fact that it doesn't throw a rod and you can consistently run these things over 8k!
is ur car actually a trd version? as toyota made a trd celica in the final year. i have a t-sport(gts to america) and the rev limiter is at 8500rpm....just wondering what the deal is as ur nearly hittin 9000. if u are drivin a t-sport or gts what work has been done to achieve this?
even wit ha full NA build the engine isn't indestructible watch the red line did you put it on a dyno to find out where you are making your peak power for each gear?
So is that a FWD car, or AWD? Sounds great, anyway.
Best
WoW!!!
What brand of lighter water pump and alternator pulley do you use? Nice engine!
I'm pretty sure the Supra had a VVTi variant, not a VVTL-i...
So, it looks like he got on it about three seconds in and let off at about 31 seconds in. So, from a roll it looks like 20kph to 210kph in about 29 seconds? {Or about 12mph to 130mph in 29 seconds}. Just as a rough guess, I'd say this is probably a 13 second car in a 1/4 mile?
Def not a 1/4 mile car
ross burton
Not saying you're wrong, but how so?
ross burton
Fully built meaning what? Like a built racing engine? Turboed? Some of the fully built turboed 2zz-ge's I've seen crank out some serious horsepower, esp. for a 4 banger.
Whats your deal man? You just looking to argue or what? I mean the fuck...
Fully built n/a:
runs 15 second 1/4mile =SLOW
The same fully built n/a wins at autocross meet.
You understand now? By all means type out your rebuttal...
ross burton
I have no idea what you're talking about. A fully built NA 2zz-ge in a GTS runs faster then 15's in a 1/4 mile.
And you're comparing the same car to two different types of racing, in one case in terms of how fast it is in a 1/4 mile and the other case at winning at autocross. Not even winning at drag racing vs winning at autocross, just 1/4 mile times vs winning at autocross.
the fuck...? indeed.
This isn't an argument, I just have no idea what point you're trying to make.
I want to set up my 2zzge Celica up to 9000RPM.
I have rebuilt engine with MWR valves, springs, retainers, locks and seals. Also have the apexi power FC. Do I need stage 2,3cams,upgrade oil pump or oil pam in order to safely rev up to 9000RPM?
Contact Monkey Wrench Racing, they can answer that question for you.

Dam lift bolts are a pain I have one broke and it’s still hitting lift
Neil Devlin Toyota had a tsb for New lifter bolts to be fitted and were much stronger to I remember doing them on so many celicas either snapped or completely sheered off lifter bolts or can upgrade to mwr lifter bolts
Just get the DDPR intake manifold and you'll be in the 13 second range.
The smartest thing Toyota ever did was contract Yamaha to make their performance engines...this was Yamaha's first try at making a high revving 4 cyl for automobile use and they already are better than VTECs that had a 20 year head start in this type of design.
0-60 in about 5 seconds? n/a ? dang..
The EM1 Civic Si motors are meant to run around this same engine also, but it's weaker than this motor and has less torque.
8800rpm! sweet.
your clock only goes to 149mph, the uk one go to 160 and I had over 150mph fully stock, yours is quick to 60mph or 100kph, but takes forever to get to 200kph, 14seconds to 100 mph, 22 seconds to get to 120mph or 190 kph, these things do quater mile in 15seconds stock, doesnt seem much of an improvement, its quick to 60 though, 5 seconds, I could do 5 seconds with just an exeady carbon race clutch, a filter 99 octain and de butterfly the intake, I'm confused, you have even done the rev limiter to 10,000 rpm, I had one of these and was gonna chuck a load of money at it, seeing this fully built with a lot of the parts I was gonna get has made me realise that supercharged is definatly the way, rotrex supercharger, it doesn't seem that much faster than stock, you got pullys, 10,000rpm, mihale, pipers port and polished, throttle body, I though it would of been faster really, its a lot you must of spent a nice few grand, you can get a 2 litre stroker kit with shorter conecting rods that I think would help you get there, but to be honest it doesn't seem much faster than stock if any, what octain is your fuel over, there it might be why we have 99 octain fuel over in UK, makes a difference, nice build just for all that you have done seems minimal. a lot of the AEM and other CAI is actually hot air as its inside the engine bay, original air box is best with a K&N pannel filter and a de butterfly, it's gotta be the octain fuel I bet you only have 94 octain fuel in greece
@carsnwomen91 this was taken only after a rough street tune...
Actually VVTL-i helps much...but on Toyota Supra is other philosophy. TwinTurbo with VVTL-i 330hp, TwinTurbo without VVTL-i 320hp...10hp more with VVTL-i. On Celicas,Corrolas,MR2/s, VVTL-I can put out much more power.
a very old term!, nowadays cars computers are set so you don't over rev!, and do damage! in other words revving the engine till the governor kicks in!!
Thanks :)
strugglin to get past 220, how much did u spend? im sure its a great engine but still..
funny how today earlier some white boy in a mazda6 try to race me in my celica gts, it was like who ever get the better launch get the road ahead first, good thing gts pick up quick. hes lucky he didnt get to meet my supra. gotta love toyota.
@Viperfet How do you figure it's not making power after 8300?
@Zeron18 It sounds like a 4age kind of
Well...the celica weighs a hell of a lot less, has less drivetrain loss, and is fully built...so I'd expect that to overcome the displacement advantage of the Z. Don't get all worked up about it...
i wana be cool like you tho if i own a mr2 can i be as cool as you
believe me...V-TEC is the best variable valve system in the world. F1 engine RA005E can revs 20000+ with ...or 19200 without. my integra with new camshafts doing 9000 withou any problem.
I love the 2zz's as far as sound but they suck on their power bands. Such a lack of power until lift kicks in @ 6500rpm and the shifting at 8k.
+Logan Jones 6k in a gts for the kick in and 8300 for the cut-off...
No power after ~8250... Sounds good though hehe.
