    Has anyone ever told you, your manner of speech on this kind of sounds like when the crew explains the safety guidelines before a flight? I don’t mean that negatively, it’s kind of awesome 😆 nice video!

    2nd comment from me on this one. I finally stopped worrying about what people would think of the finished piece and made a few to give away. So satisfying and guess what... people love them and the fact you made it. Again Mark, thank you for the encouragement to start the channel but also thanks for amazing content that enables me to learn. ATB and Cheers Sel... one day maybe even do my own mushroom video.

      Hi Sel, I hope you are having a nice weekend mate :) I have just been out to get some wood for a video and it hasn't stopped chucking down. I'm glad you are still carving them Sel and people appreciate the time and effort. I did a set for my old Mum for the garden and she loves them. I carved a couple of larger ones which looked quite nice :) Yeah you should do a video showing them mate. I always like to watch other peoples work and see how things turn out :) Enjoy the rest of your day Sel...… back to it in the morning ;( Take care, all the best, Mark :)

It is a bit more comfortable in the hand. Thanks for watching Sel, have a great day, all the best, Mark.

    To get the knives razer sharp they need to be hollow ground on a water grinder, like a Tormek, then sharpened on a coarser then finer stone, then whetted on a flat board with a polishing compound. Then you get razer sharp.

    Hi Mark. Very interesting video. You remind me a bit of Doug Outside. Which, in turn, reminds me: I really like the looks of the bass wood he uses. It looks fairly soft and very straight grained. Which makes me wonder if we have anything close to that around here? (Preferably native to Ireland or the UK)

I used to have a Facebook page, but I haven't been on it in a few years, maybe when I get more free time I will do more with it. I tried to set up an Instagram account yesterday, but it won't connect to my laptop. I'm not very good with that kind of stuff, so I'm not sure what the problem is, but I will figure it out. Thanks Mark. I like the knives and they fit in my budget. The mushrooms look great my friend, they are very clever. Quick question, is the edge retention on those Mora's better than the bushcraft black. Thanks again Mark. I hope you have a great week. - Josh

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981 6 років тому +1

      Hi Josh, I hope you are well. Yeah, nice easy project and they turn out OK however much time you put in. You should make some for your parents. I would say edge retention would go to the bushcraft black. It is easier to sharpen the carving knives because the steel is thinner and you get the edge like a razor with a couple passes over a strop. But after cutting through a few knots, then you find they need touching up again. But with the bushcraft black it is more of a robust knife. I'm sure the heat treat and steel will be different too. The black can be used hard and it still stays sharp. Different knives for different things. Thanks for watching Josh, all the best, Mark.

    • @ryanharnell9268
      @ryanharnell9268 5 років тому

      I carve and camp exclusively with the mora black and I completely concur with Mark . The scandi grind and edge retention is great. It holds up to knots and it's strong enough for reasonable battoning and other bush craft. I hand it to other people around the fire and say "try this" and there's a wow factor. For fine detail work.. of course grab the proper wood carving moras.
      If you only took one knife for the bush. She'll treat you right though.
      Thanks mark. great vid. I sent it to my nephew as a "great place to learn more" share. Great job and thanks :)

    I tried to duplicate yours. If I knew how to post a pic I’d send it to you. I used a square piece of basswood. My next one will be with a round piece.
    Thank you.
    Ps: Mark, what kind of saw are you using to score around the wood? I’ve been pondering on a saw.

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981 Рік тому +1

      Hi Terry, many thanks for watching. Any small saw like a silky or a Laplander type is good, but the saw I use is a Trend FFS/120 fold flush saw. The blade is very flexible which wasn't the reason why I bought it, but the saw is a nice size to carry in the set. Plus the teeth are tiny, so it leaves a nice clean cut without any saw marks in the piece that you are carving. I would leave a link to the saw, but you tube thinks it is spam and hides the reply. 👍.

    • @terrygwilson9628
      @terrygwilson9628 Рік тому

      Thank you for answering my question. I’ve already googled the saw, and it seems like a good one. I may buy one.

      I appreciate the reply Mark. Fishing guide and a fishery manager sound like worthy and appropriate lines of work for someone who enjoys the great outdoors. being an outdoors person also, I have to ask myself why I work indoors all day. I think I would be much happier outside. Even the miserable winter days.

    Been looking for a mushroom vid for ages and until now found nothing! Im a beginner and about to buy another carving knife and Mora seems to be a good choice , i notice ur accent is UK , im in Scotland so no hassles getting them i presume?? What one do u recommend for a beginner thats still struggling with getting them 'sharp'(i didnt realise id have a problem with this!)....i strop regularly btw! As for what i want it for? ideally i want to get into whittling but atm ive been power carving due to putting a cheap ''craft'' knife in my finger......wasnt wearing my gloves-my fault!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Hi Pixie, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) Yeah, you should have no problem getting the Mora carving knives in the UK. Amazon and eBay usually have some good deals if you look on there. If you want to spend a bit more you could always look at Ben Orford's website who makes carving tools here in the UK. I find the Mora carving knives are easy to sharpen and they sharpen to a razors edge. So they are a good knife to learn with. The Scandi grind that they come with is easy to follow when sharpening. I tend to colour the edge with a permanent marker and use this as a reference to make sure that I do all of the edge and it is nice an even. Again, Ben Orford has some good sharpening videos here on You Tube. He recommends wet and dry paper in various grits to get the best out of the edge, then strop to finish the edge off. If you only strop a knife, you can run into the problem of turning a Scandi bevel into a convex or rounded bevel. So it pays to flatten them back out from time to time. As for knife choice out of the two Mora knives, it would depend on the size of work I am carving. Both have similar shaped blades, but they are different lengths. I tend to use the shorter blade for fine work and the longer blade for removing more wood. I hope this helps :) Happy Whittling, all the best, Mark :)

    Where did the silicate brick come from in the forest?))

      Hi Oleg, they have been there for years. I think the forest workers used them for something, so we just re purposed them once they left.

      Thank you Michele. I tend to use a beeswax and coconut oil mixture as it is food safe. It is the same as I use on spoons.

    Do you prefer the 105 or 120 if you are just began carving?

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981 4 роки тому +2

      Hi snApp, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. If I was just going to start off and buying 1 knife, I would opt for the 105. The extra length of blade helps when carving wider wood and the tip is still thin enough for finer work. The 120 is good for when the bulk of the wood has been carved away and you need a knife for finer cuts. I did a video recently about carving kits and the different tools. I think I mention a few things on there about it. Thanks again. all the best, Mark :)

    what wood do u use? :)

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981 4 роки тому

      Hi Lonelywolf2500 I tend to use a variety of woods. I often use Sycamore, willow or birch which grows in abundance to me locally, plus it is easy to carve. If you have it, Lime is another good wood to use. Often called Bass wood in the US, but I like how the willow looks once it has been waxed/oiled after drying. I suppose you could use most woods that you can harvest, as toxicity doesn't apply like carving spoons or bowls etc, but the wood I mentioned are softer and easier to cut. I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)
