Sackboy: A Big Adventure - the Digital Foundry Tech Review - PS5 vs PS4 vs PS4 Pro!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
- Sony may well be wedded to the concept of the console generation, but it's also indulging in some cross-generational development too. So how does Sackboy: A Big Adventure from Sumo Digital work across three very different PlayStation consoles? In this review, John Linneman assesses the quality of the game as a whole, how it stands out on PlayStation 5 and how the older PS4 Pro and PS4 Amateur consoles compare.

Why is this just affecting you? I'm not having any problems getting 4K videos from all my other tech channel subs.
What about scheduling the uploads for, let's say next day, in order to give time to the processing? I always have the urge to immediately see the digital foundry videos and I'm always suffering watching them in a very poor encoded 1080p.

Proper chuffed that most people are enjoying Sackboy: A Big Adventure. It was a joy to be a part of the development team!
You all at Sumo are doing great work, congrats on the game!
Best launch game!!! Solid 10

I'm 38 years old and enjoying this game along my 11 year old and 4 year old sons.
This game is so awesome. My daughter and I have been playing through it and having a lot of fun. Some levels, while cleverly designed, can be a bit difficult for my daughter, but there is an accessibility option to enable infinite lives. That's so helpful.
It's a beautiful game
How old if you don't mind me asking? My daughter is 6 and is terrible at games. As she really struggles. But I'm determined to make a gamer out of her if I can. I've tried toejam and earl, overcooked, sonic racing, mario kart (snes mini)
I was wondering about this since kids will likely want to play due to the fun looking characters and set design. It def seemed challenging for kids.
@@Omegajayb I def think it might be just a little too hard for a 6 year old. It starts getting really crazy by the time you enter the second world. I'm 36 and I've been having a hard time on some levels but I've not played a platformer in years so super rusty lol
@@Omegajayb she'll get there I always played with my son even when he struggled, he's a lot better now 8yo we played quite a bit of BO zombies, Left4dead 1 and 2, Spiderman, GOW, TLOU, and quite a bit of Nintendo games

Sony just put a ring on Sumo Digital & BluePoint.
Tremendous launch titles!
MSFT will be like, if you liked the thing you should have put a ring on it
Sumo digital don't have a great track record blue point for sure though.
@Rosencrantz what’s with you guys? Lack of self esteem? Lacking confidence. You seem the type of guy who would buy a huge truck or a hellcat to make up for your tiny member.
Maybe you should just relax and play your system.
@Rosencrantz I mean. How many PS5 only exclusives are there? 1? 2 if you include astros demo room?
Sumo wasn't that good. LBP 3 was ok and Crackdown 3 disappointing, and they made a lot 6and7/10 games, but this one looks really good.
Out of everything, little big planet really hits home. After playing the first one on ps3, and on PSP, having a new LBP really make me want a new PS.

This doesn't look that great of a platformer though, I rather get Hat in the time or Celeste.
This game is fantastic and remarkably fun. Got it at launch with my PS5. Can heartily recommend it.
How's the difficulty? LBP1 was pretty difficult, but fun and rewarding, the lack of any kind of challenge in LBP2, though, made it very boring for me, and after a while, I couldn't even bring myself to play it
@@piobu5357 The degree of challenge varies from almost non existent to moderately challenging. I’d say it’s certainly more challenging than LBP2. It’s not a game I’d recommend if you’re looking for challenging, precision platforming, but it certainly does offer moments of difficulty where swift avoidance of obstacles and enemies are necessary, along with some fast paced moments that require an uninterrupted flow of coordination. Every stage has between 2-5 orbs. Collecting at least some of these is necessary to unlock new worlds and to progress through the game. Finding and obtaining all of them can be reasonably challenging. If you’re looking for some light hearted and amusing platforming with some moments of challenge, this game should satisfy you. It also looks incredible. The colors and textures really look great.
Imagine Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will be like on PS5. It's like you will be playing an Animated Show.

This might be my favourite launch title tbh.
Not hard when you don't really have a big variety of them, lol. One being a DLC for a PS4 game, the other one being a remake of an old niche game 98% of PS3 owners didn't even touch, and 2 platformers nobody cares about. What a launch, eh?
@@Oozaru85 What DLC? Those 98% of players are old and their kids are gonna want in on the PS5, like me, I did not know it was a remake and I still wanna play it on PS5. Those 2 platformers are wanted. If any of these games we're not exciting you would not see scalpers selling PS5's for $1500 and People fighting over them
@@theknightftw1 No sane person will buy from scalpers. And demand is always high when new tech launches. People would've even bought the PS5 if it had no launch titles at all. Consumers are brainless sheep. Or most of them at least. The launch games have nothing to do with the PS5 selling so well. Also, Sony simply didn't produce enough consoles to meet the demand and lots of what was available has been snatched by scalpers.
To each their own I guess. To me this launch was a total failure with 4 launch titles that don't interest me at all. No reason for me to even try to get a PS5.
@@Oozaru85 Don't get one then. Meanwhile everyone else who got one for the new games on launch and ones coming out soon are going to enjoy it.
You guys are something else with this PS5 has no games talk.
@@Oozaru85 yeah but sony selling more would have done nothing better. It would just make scalpers have more in hand
This game is honestly my favorite and it's super challenging. The music is fantastic. It's beautifully rendered and the story is so touching. I was really excited to cop it when it released and have not been disappointed.
Yeah the challenge of the later stages surprised me. I'm trying to 100% it and have had to play stages several times to get all the requirements. The lack of instructions really threw me for a loop to. I know they can be found in the menu but I would have thought they would have on screen tutorials in this type of game.
@@David-vg8ou That's the point of the hint system integrated in the PS5 UI.
@@David-vg8ou yeah they do have online tutorials if you get stuck. Hit the PS button to view.
But same. It's almost like you need to memorize the level layout a bit to get everything. Seems built so that you need to go a few playthroughs to get it all.
A wise man once said “ let the games talk”. This is another game that does. Keep it up.
This is an example of how games should be: lovely colourful places with amazing music. You feel happiness when you play it.
I agree with you 100%..this is exactly the joy and good feeling I often get when a play a great platform adventure game...it’s nice to say it happening on PlayStation for change other than on the usual Nintendo systems

I honestly feel that the PS4 Pro is still very relevant in the gaming world. It looks very good, and still performs well. Coming from someone who has a PS5 and currently playing Sackboy. Good job ps4 pro 👍🏽
Only flaw of ps4 pro is the stupidly loud fan which made me go for an upgrade. But the loading times and overall feel + the new controller is well worth it I would say. Also so many games running on 60fps vs 30 is also a big deal.
The fan isn't even a little bit loud. I don't care if you have a launch pro, which is a lot worse than the follow ups, it's still nothing compared to a launch ps4. I still have one and that thing makes ps4 pro sound like it's not even on so stop whining dude. If you can't put your volume up on your TV, USE HEADHONES! Great work John, what a great game to give some attention to... I will get this for my son, he still spends quite a bit of time on LBP3 content creator. Between the interview with Bluepoint games for Demons Souls, your Spider-man coverage going deep on raytracing or the two platformers that you've now covered, you're really giving PS5 some great attention...which I appreciate.

I played a level with my girlfriend last night and there was a remixed version of Let's Dance by David Bowie... really cool stuff! Sometimes you'll be playing the game and won't even realize you're listening to an orchestral version of Material Girl by Madonna lol
There are maybe 4 or 5 actual rhythm levels they add a lot to the gameplay though.
3:04 I just realized that many games are now more geometrically complex than some of cinema's best CGI like in LotR and Jurassic Park.
From what I understand the main reason those older and less complex implementations of CGI were able to stand the test of time, is primarily thanks to singular point-lighting like in the case of Jurassic Park, and also the relatively low fidelity of film as in the case of both LotR and JP.
If it weren't for the constant push for higher pixel counts, games could almost certainly look photorealistic at this point, especially now that Full-Scene Path Tracing is possible in real time enabling effectively, correct lighting. Now all we need is universal DLSS to upscale from ~1080p, and legendarily life-like motion blur.
Totally LOVE this game! 🥳
I'm glad this is not a typical launch title since it's also available on the older PS4s.
And especially on PS4 Pro it looks also quite nice. The first pictures I had to search for differences ... a good sign!
Too bad you arent using a PS4 with a SSD inside. Since Richard did test the PS4 Pro with SSD and saw that it's noticeably faster, this is kind of my standard for "last gen". Even an extern SSD should be doing better ... and I really would like to see just a few tests with that configuration especially when you show/ compare loading times.
When I get a PS5 this is a confirmed buy. Thanks John!

@Rinku Multani sure if you have the best hardware you can get for pc it will surely run better on pc, but I still think what I've seen so far for ps5 looks good
@@High.on.Life_DnB I'm sure it will run the best on pc but I can't help but imagine what they will do with the dual sense..... It has FPS, RPG elements so I just want to know how the guns feel or the melee weapons or the body modification. It will all probably be there in the 2021 update because it's a big game I don't think they have time to do it in this version.

In a nutshell. And this should shut up all the naysayers about how next gen is being held back by current gen.
@@bacardim390 well it is, depending on the game. Horizon: Forbidden West is a perfect example of being held back by PlayStation 4. I've noticed you guys have been downplaying the ps5, while at the same time claiming the series x has the same graphical power as a 2080, which is completely false and was a cherry picked comparison with a games that is famous for running terribly on PC (gears of war 5 for anyone who's interested).
