So extremely rare to see on UA-cam someone explain something without the fluff and unnecessary drama to make you watch a 10 min video. Give this man a GOLD UA-cam play button NOW. But the sad fact is UA-cam reward those who game the system, weird isn't it.
My first step is clean the throttle body and plate. I have no doubt this can cause the sticky acceleration. Throttle body spray cleaner is not real pricy
Agree, always like finding simple little videos like this that give me a gist of what to do. Though, in some instances, longer, more drawn out *tutorials* can be appreciated
I cleaned mine, and it worked for another 5 months, but the problem came back. I performed this test and the engine kept running. Thank you for creating this video! So at this point it is likely to be a bad MAF sensor.
I have been trying to figure out what was wrong with my wife's Malibu for months. Came across this and I will be damned. Changed MAF sensor on 2011 Malibu and now it's purring. No engine codes. God bless you for helping discover the fix and for helping me save money.
@Theeverhettshow1216 It was shutting off at random times and idling hard. Idk why your question never showed up on my notifications so I'm answering five months later. The suddenly shutting off in reverse and at a stop sign is what threw me off. It's still running great now
Hi my car was stalling at stop lights and I unplugged the mass air flow sensor plug and plugged it back in again and now my car is not stalling anymore 👍🏻🇦🇺 thanks so much for this video.
I'm gonna be 100% honest and say that I figured pulling the cord on a sensor in general would stop the engine anyway. So I walked outside all skeptical, started my truck, pulled the cord and the thing kept running. You win. Thanks.
The same here i tried on the 2008 suburban unplugged the car kept running. I bought a new maf sensor installed it unplugged the car kept running. 🤔🤔🤔i wonder do you do this on a cold engine or hot.
@@SamSam-on8dt each car work different most of the cars will keep running other dont...if your car keep running BUT you got all the loss power back and I mean like no issues then provably it is bad / bad groud or broken wire must see wire near connector 🖖🏿
Hey Paul you shouldn't be putting videos like that's up a lot of people will be wasting a lot of of money. I don't know if you're a mechanic. That's not how you test an air flow sensor
Wow..! tried exactly what you said step by step.. it fixed the car, I couldn't believe it at first. so we tried the experiment again, same result-- this repair saved us hundreds!! Thank you for taking the time to post this video!
Thank you a million times for this vid. My 2004 F250 5.4, bought new, was having issues losing power uphill and under load at 85K mileage. Took it to four mechanics over the last 1.5 years. No one could figure it out. One told me the truck's engine wasn't powerful enough and that's just the way it was built. Not! I've driven and towed with this truck since 2004 and never before had this problem. The most recent mechanic at a Ford dealer said it was the transmission and wanted to take me down that rabbit hole but I intuitively knew that wasn't the problem. I had already taken it to a good transmission specialist and he found nothing wrong with the transmission. But, then I found your vid and, sure enough, the sensor was bad! $140 cost to replace and I am now driving with no power loss and ability to tow my horse trailer up hill on the Interstate beautifully. Just as it was built to do!
@@jwillzcommonsence8870maybe if you get aftermarket BS. I ordered a Duralast and it came all mismanufactured and in horrible condition for $99.....I ordered the FACTORY OEM mass air sensor directly from Mitsubishi for $150 and it came in PERFECT matching condition and my car now runs much much much better, almost like new...... 244,000 miles on it!

I imagine if the rest of us got one of the most vital parts for our vehicle at Kmart, or Temu or where ever it is you shop, we would have got it for 20 bucks also. You left that comment thinking "these people are idiots" and looks like you're the real genius here, no doubt. I wonder where that sensor of yours, the new one, wonder where it was made. Fr i did the same i replace all the spark components coils, plugs, fuel injectors, valve cover, and fuel regulator and still threw a cyl 3 misfire. Got the sensor and ran better than it ever did made the light go of. P0303 code gone @Ron.Swanson.
@@JohanAguilar-kk9sp I replaced my MAF the other day after doing googling for 3-4 days on why my 4Runner was not accelerating well when I was pushing on the pedal. It seemed to have fixed the issue.
You saved me from headaches. I thought my transmission was the problem, the dealer told me I needed a new fuel pump, and my brother said I needed a tuneup. After watching your video I tried it out on my car, found out it was the MAF sensor, ordered it and my car works like a new one. Thanks!!
Also unplugging the mass air flow sensor while the car is running on some cars will cause the car to go into a test mode and then u may have to see a mechanic to get out of test mode
Awesome man spent 190 dollars at a corner shop and couldn't find the issue on why it idles roughly, I should have started with UA-cam to find my issue myself. I came across your video third video from The View Bar I tried it and that's exactly what it was. From now on I'll be diagnosing my own car using UA-cam
im impressed by how you explain something like this quiet simple without any nonsence and taking ten minutes to do so ,, so well done , i would think you would make a good doctor or teacher of any subject in front of a classroom of kids
I had been troubleshooting my daughters 07 Pontiac G6 for traction control light and check engine codes for weeks. I cleaned the MAF, New Air filter, fuel Injector Cleaner and all kinds of fixes. Went through the Shop Manual, watched hundreds of UA-cam videos, went on G6 Forums, tried dozens of things but no good results. Everyone had a different opinion of what the problem was. All pointed to very expensive repairs. I was in despair so i decided to pray for a solution and within minutes your video came into my view. I went out to the car an pulled the sensor plug and the car kept on running. Ordered a new MAF Sensor online $35 buck plus shipping. Thank you. God Bless. Ill add the codes I was getting to help others P0171 & P0174 and T/C Light.
Thank you for this for this quick simple video. I ran a code saying my CAT was bad & my mechanic said to change the MAF first. Your video confirmed that the MAF needed cleaning/change. Thanks again
You should not do this because the battery acts as a capacitor (voltage spike dampener). The alternator will generate more voltage the faster it spins far in an excess of 12 V. The battery is there to absorb the voltage spikes and distribute an even 12 V to the electronic components that can’t handle more than 12 V. The car actually runs off the battery. the alternator keeps the battery charged. But the car does not run off the alternator.
I am gonna try this, so simple but effective. I did clean my MAF last night. One side was black and the other was amber, now after cleaning it, the black side looks better, but I am not 100%. I think this little test will tell me more . Thx for posting this one !!
I was going to take my 2008 Pontiac to a shop to put the mass air flow sensor on a new one and a emission evaporative position sensor showed a leak that I know where’re it is exactly. But the shop wanted to charge me $700 for labor. So I looked on UA-cam. Thank you cuz you saved me money on the mass air flow sensor. And now I have to look at how to fix the gas air leak. It was so easy to put on a new Mass airflow sensor.
Just came across this video and happy I did.My 2019 Chev malibu with engine light coming on and car not working good.took it to the dealer,3 and half hours later they said they couldn't find the problem, so they reset everything and if the light comes on again and they would keep it a few days and drive it with a laptop connected and see if they could find a problem.i left the dealers and less them 2 minutes the light came on.I knew I wouldn't be taking back.Found your video and this morning did what you said, car kept running.Took the mass air flow sensor off and cleaned it up with proper cleaner, returned it to the car ,light still on and drove it about 15 km turned car off, started it again.NO LIGHT :-)))) Car works like a charm now. Thank you so much.
This video stands out as one of the finest instructional resources on UA-cam. It wastes no time and gets right to the point. Initially, I believed my transmission was experiencing problems, so I attempted to resolve the issue by changing spark plugs and the fuel filter, but to no avail. However, upon discovering your video, all of my troubles were alleviated.
Watched a guy in another video drive through town with a computer. Total waste of time. Thanks for the easy to understand concise and to the point video.
I tried it just now, my engine keep running when I disconnected it, time to replace mine, but oh man, I clean the throttle, change the spark plug, check the fuel injector and nothing happened until I saw your video, thanks a lot.
Just cleaned mine it most definitely 100% worked. I took off the negative and positive battery cables before cleaning. Once I reinstalled everything my check engine light went off immediately when I first started the car
Don't run without your sensor. That sensor is designed to measure airflow. Yes, your vehicle runs for now, but unregulated airflow will throw off the air fuel ratio, resulting in an offset spark resulting in long-term engine damage. If you haven't replaced it, I highly recommend you do. I'm a mechanic and see this all the time.
@@Michaelbrian777 Yes you 100% correct because I'm facing the exact same issue with my W204 C200. Only when it's hot outside my car's idle goes up and down
It's worthwhile to clean the MAF sensor first before replacing it. It did worked in my car. After cleaning it with the MAF sensor cleaner my car is running perfectly. No more hesitation.
Thank you so much Auto shop said transmission was bad. I came home and changed plugs, battery and tried this. It kept running so ordered a new one and air filter.
my st220 started cutting out i changed the coil pack and sorted a loose vacuum pipe which sorted the erratic idle , but now the car idle started diving and wanted to cut out whilst on the run. I just did this test and found the car was still running after removing the maf connection... so im buying a new one ... thanks for your demo sir!!
Wow, after months of trying to figure out what was wrong with my car - talking to and taking it to many mechanics this is the answer I have been looking for. Thank you soo much man, I can now freely go travelling my home country!
I have Cx5 2014 sport, 6speed, 135,000 miles, I've had spark plugs & tune up, misfire coil wire #2 changed. Ran well, for two weeks ago, I recently noticed some hesitation & jerking again, upon stepping on the gas going up a hill, was only able to go 5 to 10 miles smh. I ordered the MFA oem part, and hopefully, this will fix the issue. The car has been to 2 garages, totaling $500, and I've heard hope its not the engine or something else from them. Thanks for your video❤
Same story here with a 2016 Kia Soul+. One lone misfire on cylinder #2 code, that never came back. So no codes to go on for 6+ months. Changed plugs, coils, battery, filters, cleaned fuel injectors. Took it to 3 repair shops. Spent $$$$$$! Last shop said maybe it's in Limp mode with no code? Or maybe it's the transmission? Called the Kia dealership twice $200 to put it on the first level code reader, $+++ after that! Kia even said maybe it's beyond repair! 😢 At 133,000 miles!? It went from great car to 40 mph tops, then to 20 mph tops over 6 months. Won't climb the smallest incline. Jerks, rough idle, can't press the pedal down even halfway way or it starts knocking under the middle passenger's side. Barely no forward power, and jerky Fuel economy dropped from 30 to about 10 mpg. Runs best upon starting for the 1-2 minutes between "cold" & "neutral". Doesn't go over 2000 rpm. Seems like it doesn't shift out of second gear. But no codes! Just a quickly flashing oil light after it's been running for awhile, but I've checked the oil dozens of times & it's always full. A lot of weird symptoms! I'm gonna try this MAF test & see if it's that!
I agree with the comments, good video, I would like to add one detail if I may. Another option is to purchase a can of MAF Sensor cleaner, and I only say this because some of those sensors can be expensive. I've had excellent results with the cleaner, and no disrespect intended to your video.
WOW I have now gone through 2 and prob 2 hours of research to have you simply unplug it... Your on point. MILLION DOLLAR QUEST. For both of you Scholars, if the engine doesn't Is cut off and still runs which would means my sensor's bad, I could still possibly clean it to salvage it??? I did try to spray a bit of cleaner but still the same problem, any further suggestions aside from the basic spray cleaning? and the mi
Electronically a mass airflow sensor is a very simple component. It consists of a thermometer and an anemometer. The anemometer measures the airspeed and the thermometer measures the air density and given a fixed diameter you can calculate exactly how much air is going through it
I pulled the plug just like you said and my car took off down the street and never saw it again!!!! Thanks!!! In a instant I saved on total vehicle expense!!!! And i saved 15% on car insurance!!!! No foreal, I will really have to see if that's true.
Hey thank you very much for posting this video. My check engine light has been on for a few days now and I just did this test and confirmed that the mass air flow sensor is bad. You're right, it was very easy. Thank you again for posting this video and showing us how it's done!!!!
If you read the schematic you'll see most MAF sensors contain a temp sensor as well. The correct way to diagnose is to disassemble the connector and remove the MAF signal wire. Reconnect the sensor and drive while watching your fuel trim numbers. With the signal wire disconnected the ECM will substitute values so it can run without the MAF signal. My rig showed LTFT (long term fuel trim) numbers high while driving. Plus 10 to 15 percent added fuel. With the wire disconnected the fuel trims were normal plus or minus 5. Replaced the MAF sensor. The ECM relearned the correct fuel trims during the next cold start warm up. This test is more accurate than just guessing like this video shows.
I unplugged my MAF and my engine ran crappy but didn't shut off. Cleaned the MAF sensor and plugged it back in and it ran fine. I have to question about the engine shutting off by just unplugging the MAF. Just clean the MAF and see how the car runs. Check the vacuum hoses etc. that can cause a lean condition. Check some other UA-cams for other things that can cause an engine light associated with the MAF.
I need to buy one because engine keeps working when I pull connector. My mechanic found problem in MAF sensor using diagnostic device. So you are right. Thanks a lot for the video.
You are the MAN!! , i had rough acceleration, idling was horrible.. I have a 2004 MDX. I turned on the car removed the connection and the car turned off. But as soon I reconnected the connector the idling and acceleration issues were resolved. Its driving much better. I was going to replace all the spark plugs, fuel injectors.. you saved me lots of money. FYI a few months ago thoroughly cleaned the throttle, same results bad idling and acceleration. I guess by unplugging the MASensor while the car is turned ON it reset its reading.. Im very happy now..
"But as soon I reconnected the connector the idling and acceleration issues were resolved. " You mean reconnected with a new maf sensor? I don't think the point of the video was unplug it and them plug it back in ad it'll be fixed?
1.7k Dislikes for such a short helpful vid?? 1.7k mechanics must not have appreciated you sharing the valuable secret.🤑 Thanks for taking the time to help people same money and time!
That's because this video will cause viewers who are inexperienced to misdiagnose the problem. This particular vehicle may or may not represent a small percentage of engines (or it's a very old model without O2 or MAP sensors) as most engines WILL CORRECTLY NOT KILL the engine when the MAF is disconnected (I haven't seen an engine that would die regardless if the MAF was good or not). When disconnected, the ECU will go into a default mode where it will rely on other sensors such as the MAP and upstream O2 sensor (A/F ratio sensor on newer cars) to calculate for a 14.7:1 air/fuel mixture and continue to run. Apparently, "Proclaimliberty2000", is not a mechanic and will cause more problems than help and was wise to add that long disclaimer. He may have good intentions or may be deliberately screwing with people; I don't know but I have nothing to gain by advising that no one trust him when it comes to engine diagnosis. In this day and age, four things are needed to reach a 100% absolutely correct engine diagnosis (although less will do in some cases). Those are: 1.a scan tool that is able to read live data and display freeze frame data, 2.an oscilloscope, 3.the factory car specific service manual or access to your vehicles specifications/values for parts that may be causing an issue and 4.at least a general understanding of the mechanics and the CAN Bus OBD II system that exist in all vehicles today (OBD II codes are the same for all car manufacturers, unlike the older OBD I systems). Hopefully, you'll at least watch a few other videos. You can't trust the first one you watch on You Tube without sometimes regretting it or worse, creating more problems. Good Luck!
This is a short 2 minute video (I have no idea who the channel belongs to nor do I have anything to gain) that advises if you have an issue that causes your vehicle to start, then it stalls; disconnect the MAF. If that corrects the problem and the vehicle continues to run with the MAF disconnected, then the MAF sensor is bad and needs to either be replaced or in some cases, cleaning it properly and with the correct cleaner (MAF cleaner, electronic cleaner, brake cleaner, etc) may correct the issue. The reason is that the bad MAF sensor is sending incorrect data to the ECU but by disconnecting it, the ECU can't use the bad data (either very lean or rich condition/engine needs a 14.7:1 A/F mixture to properly combust) that is causing the engine to die, so it then relies on other sensors. Hope this explains the many dislikes here and helps. ua-cam.com/video/M1m-n5rxuQs/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for this video! I'm glad I believe in doing my homework before just going to dealerships. Check engine light came on Friday, had the reading done and it came back as the MAF sensor needs replacement. Did this check on Saturday and my car kept running yet acted as if it was going to stop but kept running. I cleaned both my sensors with CRC MAF Sensor Cleaner. Drove it around today and my vehicle rides and idles sooooooooo much smoother now! I sure hope this cleaning resolved it and I don't need to buy new ones. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Thanks for the video. I had this same problem with my z4 e85 three times already within a week. The mechanic did mention last Jan 2023 that it may go bad and to replace it but mind as well clean the MAF first to see results. After cleaning it, all was good until just few days ago and today, I started to have that same problem and this time it went dead on the road. Had to park on the side to restart the engine again.
YOU ARE THE MAN!!! I have trouble to figure out if it was the MAF or something else... i did it and my car keep running as u said so my MAF is bad... thank you a lot....
My mother in law's Ford Taurus would not start and I was able to get it to start by disconnecting the mass air flow sensor. I took the sensor apart and wires and junk stuck on them. Some chipmunks had gotten into the air filter box. I put the sensor back in after I blew the stuff out and it started again when the sensor was reconnected. Good video. Happy Motoring.
Simplest explanation. Had to get the obd to find out it was the sensor, but I remember my van not shutting off when I disconnected it. This wouldn't saved me a lot of time and money. Thanks for the helpful tip.
This is very well explained and it is important to know this also sometimes you may not need to replace your MAF Sensor so you can buy a special Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner which is a spray and spray the metal wire part of it, you can watch videos on how to clean MAF Sensor.
If the car doesn't turn off your maf sensor is bad or the connector is bad if u have a rough running engine when the sensor is connected cleaning it might fix it but if the engine doesn't stop at all when u dissconnect the sensor then your maf sensor is bad Because maf sensor cleaners clean the sensors and they work only if the sensor was already sending signals or working poorly atleast If you pull the connector and it turns off then the sensor is working "even if it was working poorly it would turn off" It will stay running if the sensor is bad This is my thought about maf sensors if anyone thinks that am wrong pls correct me 😁
The idea of Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaner is not to fix a faulty MAF, it's to KEEP IT CLEAN so it doesn't crap out. Another sign of the MAF being dead is the car running rich, and I mean halve your fuel economy rich, blowing fuel smoke by the bucketload and getting worse as the throttle is opened more. Plugs often foul and cause misses within 50miles or less. Contrary to popular belief due to a "Pimp my mum's car" kids show from England, check engine light doesn't necessarily just mean a faulty O2 sensor! 😂 😂 😂
Very nice. Simple and straight to the point! No fancy diagnostic tools needed! Sometimes just diagnosing the problem is the hardest part! Wish I would have know this last year but MAF sensor wasn't too expensive for my 2002 Rav4. Only about $32 off Amazon!
Something you might want to mention is that diesels can run without a MAF. So the engine might still run with it disconnected, but the MAF still be bad.
Before you go replacing the MAS you can take it off and clean it with electrical cleaner spray, this usually works and saves money The same with your idle control valve
What is really sad is trying to find an auto repair shop that the people there can actually use a scanner to program or reprogram things wrong with a vehicle. Not a worthless code reader but an actual scanner.
Im gonna be the first to say that it depends on the car - when i unpluged the maf from my car, the engine didnt stop, but it worked better and got better mileage. Explanation: 1. After the maf was disconected, the ECU got the manufacturer code for (airflow ratio) for the engine to run correctly, even with the check engine light on. 2. If my engine stoped runing or bad idle - then that means that the ECU has a code problem 3. If the engine runs bad then one of the reasons could be that the maf has a bad reading (dirty ot electric problem) So if you unplug the maf - not always means that the engine dies! good luck!
Well, mine also worked better for short time but after sometime it got worst.. I tho had bad new part.. but wished I let the computer reprogram seen if it got better..
@@Magina1989 I didn’t get it reprogram, that was my mistake, I took the new one off and took it back refund.. I put my old one back on.. I wondering if I should reorder one and try ur method.. sorry on late reply!
I've been an auto mechanic for over 20 years. Many of the problems I see daily could have easily been avoided by simply following the vehicles maintenance schedule. I use a program on my computer called Automotive Wolf car care software to keep track of all the maintenance for my 3 cars, a truck and even a generator. It automatically can send you text message reminders when any type of service is due. Two of my vehicles have over 200,000 miles and have never needed any repairs. Want to save money? Follow your maintenance schedule!
Hi Just tried this on my old bmw e36, and sure enough, it carried on running!! so job for the weekend is to clean the sensor first before i order a new sensor! thank you so much Paul! Happy from the uk!!
The MAS will also stop working if it is dirty. On a Yaris take out the two screw and it lifts out. If covered in dirt clean using a sensor cleaning spray. If the contact is already clean you'll require a new one. 1/ Spray the sensor and the two contact point hidden near the top of the sensor lid and allow 5 minutes to dry. 2/ repeat the cleaning process and leave for 25 minutes to thoroughly dry before re-installing it. Do not touch the actual sensor with anything, just spray. Be careful to prevent spraying into the electrical harness contacts.
Rey DeGuerra Exactly I love this, I make videos myself and try to do this, because I hate people who run their damn mouth for 15 minutes for a video that could've been 3 minutes
Thank u so mutch. I learn today my car was slightly jerking when driving. Kinda felt like if it was a horse galloping. I did what you told me. I Disconnected the censor and the car kept runing on. Smh. 🤦🏽♂️ thank you !!! God bless you and your family ❤
I was amazed that my terribly running recently purchased 07 pathfinder stalled slightly but kept running. Does this definitively mean that the sensor is faulty? That would be an amazing quick to a problem that’s been taking too long to figure out. Thanks for the awesome straight to the point video.
If it stops when you take out the connector, is that a for sure sign that the Mass air flow sensor is good? Or is there still a possibility that it is bad? Can a bad MAFS cause a car to only start when it's cold and then after warming up it's harder to start? Thanks!
ok yes, if your vehicle cuts off , when you unplug it,it means that the MAS is working fine. also now by doing this by unplugging it ,now there is code stored by unpluggingit... and you need a OBD Reader to clear it... why not just take it to the local auto parts (autozone) store and they will check your codes and or clear your codes for you...free.
Disconnecting the maf sensor from the ECU proved only that the circuit is working and engine must stop..Need to have engine diagnostic or obd scanner to isolate what really causes check engine.
If you have a K & N filter installed then you should clean it after cleaning your filter. Because the oils from the filter can contaminate the “wire” on the MAF. But this test is golden to diagnose a bad one.
I just did that test and that's the problem or at least one of the problems..bad mass air flow sensor....car just kept running when I unplugged the wire....cool
Thank you for the information, it worked textbook perfect! I changed mine out on a 98 Honda Accord and it fixed it. Back on the road! Your video was short and to the point, not confusing. Appreciate Ya!
Yes I did , it was running very rough as I was driving down the road. Acted like it was missing and was going to stop at times. That fixed it. But if that doesn’t fix your problem it could be another sensor.there are quite a few of them that could make it do the same thing.
Tks! Also remember if you are driving and the engine shuts down just like the key was turned off peck on the MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. If it's bad this may get you going till it can be replaced. If it's bad even at ldle a light peck will kill the engine and another will let lt start. This happened to me on a 96 Maxima!🇺🇸
Will the mass air flow sensor cause a P0171 bank one to lean code , I need some help thank you , I did what you said in the video , my car stayed on , need some help
@@waldipup9010 You are absolutely correct if it's a "V" motor and it has 2 banks both codes will eventually appear as the fuel trims exceed 20% +/-; may be a 4 cylinder or straight 6 cylinder with only one bank, hence only P0171. That being said, disconnecting the MAF sensor shouldn't cause your car to die regardless of it's condition as the ECU will rely on other sensors, especially the upstream O2 and MAP sensor to calculate the injector pulse length to obtain the needed 14.7:1 air/fuel mixture. This video is very misleading and simply incorrect but don't take my word for it. Do more research, then you will learn and believe me.
When my car hit 130,000 miles my check engine light came on. So I took it to an auto parts store. They did a test the code came up bad mass airflow sensor. Since they had to order @ 220.00 each and I needed two of them. So I said no thanks and went over to Walmart and picked up mass airflow sensor cleaner/ throttlebody cleaner kit off the shelf for 10.00 and did the job myself. Followed the directions and put everything back together. Check engine light turned off on test run and 30,000 miles later it’s still good. Just saying try cleaning it 1st.

Ajw312 oh no sir, I bought it from somewhere else.. but i didnt need the MAF sensor part, i just cleaned it and bought a OBD2 scanner and my car purrs like a cat again. No funkiness while idling at stoplight. But thanks for your support ❤️
All of the idle issues I've had with my truck I couldn't figure it out to save the life of me, I tried the unplug method and my truck kept running and the abs light came on. The airflow problem was giving me a lean misfire code so what did I do, I replaced all of the plugs wires and ignition coils... wasted my money, come to find out the MAF sensor was the problem smh... all I can say is thank God for UA-cam saving me so much money from getting ripped off by mechanics that are way overpaid...
434 ranch I have real bad idle problems it shakes so bad but it runs to smooth . I put seafoam , I changed the spark plugs , I cleaned the idle control valve , and cleaned the throttle body . This will be my next step
Years ago, a GM tech showed our class a simple trick of using the handle of a screwdriver and very gently tap the mass if the engine changes rpms or stumbles, replace the mass.

Unfortunately, it's not true. Like so much youtube. Now, 20 people watch this and make their own videos, creating more bull 💩
I cleaned mine, and it worked for another 5 months, but the problem came back. I performed this test and the engine kept running. Thank you for creating this video! So at this point it is likely to be a bad MAF sensor.
If it keeps getting dirty that quick it can be your air filter dirty as well
did you just clean the screen? there are small wires that also need to be cleaned.
I have been trying to figure out what was wrong with my wife's Malibu for months. Came across this and I will be damned. Changed MAF sensor on 2011 Malibu and now it's purring. No engine codes. God bless you for helping discover the fix and for helping me save money.

That’s awesome.
Amazing.

A genuine MAF sensor should almost always be a dealer part or if you can find a genuine, OEM one online somewhere else for a bit cheaper and they always are a bit expensive. As the man said, $140 sounds right. Mine was $118.
I imagine if the rest of us got one of the most vital parts for our vehicle at Kmart, or Temu or where ever it is you shop, we would have got it for 20 bucks also.

Just like testing your alternator to test that unplug the battery when the car is running if the car stops your alternator is bad. Great job

Wow, after months of trying to figure out what was wrong with my car - talking to and taking it to many mechanics this is the answer I have been looking for. Thank you soo much man, I can now freely go travelling my home country!
What symptoms was the engine giving or just the Check Engine Icon TURNED ON ? TY
All the mechanics had to do was put it on a scanner and read the codes. Some scanners tell exactly what is wrong

Electronically a mass airflow sensor is a very simple component. It consists of a thermometer and an anemometer. The anemometer measures the airspeed and the thermometer measures the air density and given a fixed diameter you can calculate exactly how much air is going through it

You should make a video of that
Is that means when disconnecting the signal wire and the LTFT came back to normal readings means that the maf need to be replaced?!
I tried this guy's suggestion and I bet I will never do that again 😮

FYI a few months ago thoroughly cleaned the throttle, same results bad idling and acceleration. I guess by unplugging the MASensor while the car is turned ON it reset its reading.. Im very happy now..

Thanks for taking the time to help people same money and time!

THANK YOU...for taking the time to explain this. I am having the exact issue with my auto, this will save me a lot of $$$$!!!
🤦♂️ where was this video when I needed. I had this issue last week didn't know how to test it. Now I know. Thank You.
If the car doesn't turn off your maf sensor is bad or the connector is bad
if u have a rough running engine when the sensor is connected cleaning it might fix it but if the engine doesn't stop at all when u dissconnect the sensor then your maf sensor is bad
Because maf sensor cleaners clean the sensors and they work only if the sensor was already sending signals or working poorly atleast
If you pull the connector and it turns off then the sensor is working "even if it was working poorly it would turn off"
It will stay running if the sensor is bad
This is my thought about maf sensors if anyone thinks that am wrong pls correct me 😁
The idea of Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaner is not to fix a faulty MAF, it's to KEEP IT CLEAN so it doesn't crap out.
This is a great job of getting to the point and creating a detailed and concise solution for the average person. Thank you so much.

OMG! Thank you. Just did as instructed and my engine kept running. Bingo! Thank's again.
Something you might want to mention is that diesels can run without a MAF. So the engine might still run with it disconnected, but the MAF still be bad.
This is the case on my diesel
totally correct, you deserve a medal. But in the US basically no one owns a diesel car after VW dieselgate
Ck'd it with my OBD II it said flow restriction. I thought it was the cad converter but saw this video wow! fastest diagnosis ever. Thank you!
Mine is saying p0403 EGR vaccums solonoid . But when I pull this plug it doesn’t shut off
Before you go replacing the MAS you can take it off and clean it with electrical cleaner spray, this usually works and saves money
The same with your idle control valve
What is really sad is trying to find an auto repair shop that the people there can actually use a scanner to program or reprogram things wrong with a vehicle. Not a worthless code reader but an actual scanner.
Im gonna be the first to say that it depends on the car - when i unpluged the maf from my car, the engine didnt stop, but it worked better and got better mileage.
Explanation:
1. After the maf was disconected, the ECU got the manufacturer code for (airflow ratio) for the engine to run correctly, even with the check engine light on.
2. If my engine stoped runing or bad idle - then that means that the ECU has a code problem
3. If the engine runs bad then one of the reasons could be that the maf has a bad reading (dirty ot electric problem)
So if you unplug the maf - not always means that the engine dies!
good luck!
Well, mine also worked better for short time but after sometime it got worst.. I tho had bad new part.. but wished I let the computer reprogram seen if it got better..

And how is a sensor going bad going to be prevented by normal maintenance?

Thank you to all UA-cam mechanics. You've helped me out so much. This video in particular was very helpful. Keep it up!
Thank u so mutch. I learn today my car was slightly jerking when driving. Kinda felt like if it was a horse galloping. I did what you told me. I Disconnected the censor and the car kept runing on. Smh. 🤦🏽♂️ thank you !!! God bless you and your family ❤
FANTASTIC TIP....What other ENGINE SYMPTOMS, besides the CHECK ENGINE ICON TURNED ON, could be signs of a BAD MAF SENSOR ??? TY !
I was amazed that my terribly running recently purchased 07 pathfinder stalled slightly but kept running. Does this definitively mean that the sensor is faulty? That would be an amazing quick to a problem that’s been taking too long to figure out. Thanks for the awesome straight to the point video.
This video saved me! My car didn't do exactly what he said but it gave me my diagnosis
If it stops when you take out the connector, is that a for sure sign that the Mass air flow sensor is good? Or is there still a possibility that it is bad? Can a bad MAFS cause a car to only start when it's cold and then after warming up it's harder to start? Thanks!
Yes that’s correct. You will notice it to start acting up much more once it’s warmed up a bit
ok yes, if your vehicle cuts off , when you unplug it,it means that the MAS is working fine. also now by doing this by unplugging it ,now there is code stored by unpluggingit... and you need a OBD Reader to clear it... why not just take it to the local auto parts (autozone) store and they will check your codes and or clear your codes for you...free.
Gr8 advice and after cranking and disconnecting the maf sensor the car did stop so thanks for the advice🙌💯👍
my kind of diagnosis - no OBD II, no computer, just a quick test
Hh
Obd just told me "system too lean"
This test confirmed the issue.
I wish all tests were like this😂

Disconnecting the maf sensor from the ECU proved only that the circuit is working and engine must stop..Need to have engine diagnostic or obd scanner to isolate what really causes check engine.
Simple and straightforward. Thank you. My Volvo S40 needs a new Mass Airflow sensor
Hello I have a volvo S40 too. What symptoms were you getting and did you fix the problem?
If you have a K & N filter installed then you should clean it after cleaning your filter. Because the oils from the filter can contaminate the “wire” on the MAF. But this test is golden to diagnose a bad one.
What filter ?
@@youonlyliveonce2556
Air filter!
Thank you! I checked my MAF sensor, as demonstrated. Car shut off. Rules that out! Thanks!
A five year old understands this video. Great content without trying to sound like an engine guru. I will subscribe just for that.
I just did that test and that's the problem or at least one of the problems..bad mass air flow sensor....car just kept running when I unplugged the wire....cool
Not true on all cars. Some computers have a MAF default so if you unplug it your engine runs on the computer default settings.
Thank you for the information, it worked textbook perfect! I changed mine out on a 98 Honda Accord and it fixed it. Back on the road! Your video was short and to the point, not confusing. Appreciate Ya!
did u experience any car symptoms before u changed the maf sensor...
Yes I did , it was running very rough as I was driving down the road. Acted like it was missing and was going to stop at times. That fixed it. But if that doesn’t fix your problem it could be another sensor.there are quite a few of them that could make it do the same thing.
@@Jimbo7303 98 it works, but after 2000 no more so this test is for older cars, use live data and you know for sure what the problem will be.
Probably a crazy question..but will using this test damage other components of the engine or the engine itself?
No it’s to test all other components after air mass
My car sputtered a few times and then quickly roared back to idle after I disconnected the sensor... what does that mean?
Comeback Kid 702 yeah it’s causes a p0171 and if it stays on the maf sensor is bad. Did you fix it ?
@@HoustonRocket281 Why not a 174 also if the maf?
@@jlcastille9017 Yeah thanks JL .
David Wiley about to attempt this tomorrow morning on my Lexus is250... It was suggested by mechanic working at auto zone. Wish me luck 🍀 glad your car is working
Mrs Right the Infamous Black Goddess Good luck and take your time. It’s not to hard to do and worth doing it yourself!
Never buy parts from AutoZone... Save yourself the money and buy it from Amazon.
Ajw312 oh no sir, I bought it from somewhere else.. but i didnt need the MAF sensor part, i just cleaned it and bought a OBD2 scanner and my car purrs like a cat again. No funkiness while idling at stoplight. But thanks for your support ❤️
David Wiley it worked out great Dave.. thank you! 😊
@@PhunkyNomad also check motor mounts
Overpaid?
Years ago, a GM tech showed our class a simple trick of using the handle of a screwdriver and very gently tap the mass if the engine changes rpms or stumbles, replace the mass.
Thanks for the tip having issues with something I can’t figure out , change fuel pump, fuel filter, p0171 comes on
