The MONTE Cristo Popular 1950's - 60's Sandwich

- Опубліковано 29 кві 2024
- The Monte Cristo sandwich is a unique and indulgent variation of the French croque-monsieur. It became popular in the United States around the 1950s and 1960s. The sandwich typically consists of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese between slices of bread that are then dipped in beaten egg and pan-fried or deep-fried until golden brown. Often, it is dusted with powdered sugar and served with a side of jam, usually raspberry, for dipping.
The origins of the Monte Cristo sandwich are a bit of a mystery, but it's believed to have evolved from the croque-monsieur, a grilled cheese and ham sandwich that originated in France around the early 20th century. "Monte Cristo" could be inspired by "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas, though the connection between the novel and the sandwich is speculative at best.
The sandwich gained widespread popularity when it appeared on menus in southern California theme parks and restaurants in the 1960s, making it a staple of American comfort food menus. It's known for its delightful contrast of savory and sweet flavours and rich and crunchy texture.

An American chain restaurant that was popular in the 90’s called Bennigans used to have a breaded and deep fried monte cristo sandwich. It was served with powdered sugar and raspberry preserves. Talk about a heavenly heart attack on a plate. It was delicious!

@Jules 73. They also used to have a rockin' potato soup. 😋
I first tasted a Monte Cristo at a breakfast place in Lake Tahoe, California in the early 80's.. They served it with powdered sugar & maple syrup with jam offered on the side. Too messy to pick up, it was eaten with fork & knife. Heavenly! 😋
Thank you. Best, Rik
I grew up in California and Mom made MC's for us on Saturdays (Sundays were sausage with either Dad's pancakes or waffles). She would simply make French toast with her homemade bread, then add ham/cheddar with maple syrup or turkey/swiss with her blackberry jam. Miss those days.
Made this as a line cook in Midwest USA restaurant in 1969-71. Never squished my sandwiches though. Dipped sandwich in beer batter & deep fried. Held together with long wood sandwich picks
Thank you. Best, Rik
Do you remember the establishment in which you worked from 1969-71? I like going down the rabbit hole for no particular reason. Something to do do in retirement. I like chefs idea of 2 tbsp of butter. Cheers mate.
@@Honey-Sanchez Jo-Jo’s. Morton Grove, IL. North suburb of Chicago. I believe original developer was from California
I use to work for a place that one of their best sellers was a monte cristo but they did the cooking quite a bit differently lol. Build the sandwich just like you did yours, but then they would spike the corners with skewers to hold it together and cut diagonally. Instead of the egg wash they would then chuck it into the beer batter they used for fish and chips and into the deep fryer it went. No melty cheese oozing out of the crispy fluffy batter so everything was held in. Less messy and incredibly delicious.
Oh yeah, this joint in America called Bennigan’s used to make a battered Monte Cristo sandwich like that, and it was SO good.

Truly magnificent! You can see why the 1970s would've killed it as a sandwich choice. As we all rushed to embrace the low saturated fat, low protein and highly processed food mantra and its false promise of eternal fitness and longevity. Shame it was all a lie and we've been cursed with morbid obesity and a joyless, tasteless cuisine of guilt and misery. Folks, you are not eternal. Your ancestors ate like this and were happy. I'm one old person who is looking forward to tucking into one of these!

Yeah mate, people aren’t eating any more calories than they did in the 70s. It’s those magic carbs you’re so afraid of that must be making people fat!
Social murder. Google it. Processed food is the food of the marginalized communities that's why it's so cheap
Whatever, I’ve made probably a thousand of these when I worked in kitchens in the 90’s and well into the 2000’s. I also made a variation of it called a Molly Brown, built the same way, but dipped it a batter and deep fried.

One of my all time favorite sandwiches! You can still get them in some restaurants here in the States. My favorite version came with a sweet/spicy Raspberry Jalapeño jam, which was perfect because the slight heat helps cut through the richness of the dish. That jam sent me down a rabbit hole of the fruity/spicy jam & jelly category which is worth exploring, imo.
Love jams with peppers made in them!!! They definitely add a depth to the jams! Habanero apple jam is spectacular!!! (And I really don't care for apple jam.) Best part of making your own jams is adding what you want to create a new, amazing flavor!
Love the sound on the jam you had. That could be on my own make list. Thank you. Best, Rik
I think I've had that sweet spicy sandwich you're talking about. Delicious 🤤
In 1970, I worked all through HS at W.T. Grants. I used the butter wheel & then grilled the top-split New England hot dog rolls on a panini grill like a grill cheese on both sides. Then put in the chili, then the roller-grilled hot dog, and then the mustard or ketchup, minced onions and pickle relish. Some wanted sauerkraut, too, or minced cabbage on top for the crunch. They were 40 cents, and 45 cents with chili. I sold 230 hot dogs in two hours, in my aqua dress uniform, lol! For 3 years! At Christmas, we would open the front doors of the store where our popcorn machines were. Everyone came in, and then came over to me for a chili dog and a coke. Inflation-beating eating! Pepperridge Farms still makes the New England hot dog rolls, but they are less shallow now.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Its like a club sandwich made with french toast and fried in butter. How can that not be great tasting.

I still remember the first time I ate this…I was 13 years old (I’m 78 now) and we were on a family trip to Southern California for a day at Disneyland!!! My mouth waters just thinking about it!!! As a family of seven driving from Seattle, Washington, this was a trip of a lifetime…
Thanks for sharing a great memory. Thank you. Best, Rik
It was brought back in one of the restaurants in Disneyland a few years ago. It was the best food in the park and a destination for me when I went (I keep an annual pass). Then, they went to an industrial pre-packaged version that was horrible. I haven’t had a Monte Cristo since.
The first time I had a Monte Cristo was in 1968 in the restaurant that was next to the enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland. The restaurant was called the Tahitian Terrace and they had a wonderful menu that included the Monte Cristo. They had a fantastic stage show which included Tahitian dancers and beautiful women performing the hula dances of the islands.
My little brother and I insisted that we return to that restaurant the next day on our family vacation to Disneyland where we memorize almost everything in sight and especially that amazing Tahitian Terrace Monte Cristo sandwich. In my earliest days of cooking under my mom's watchful eye I was able to perfect the Monte Cristo sandwich. Sadly the Tahitian Terrace is long gone and has been replaced by several different iterations of eateries over the years.

There's a trick I learned for any kind of fried cheese sandwich, and it's basically once you are about 3/4 done cooking, sprinkle a bit of grated cheese (not much, be sparse) on the outside so it crisps up and gives you that great flavour of the cheese that melts out of the side and "overcooks" and gets crunchy, but now you have that with every bite. The trick is not to put too much on though. just a sprinkle.

back in the early nineties, for reasons that aren't relevant, I was in San Jose area of California and at a restaurant i had breadcrumbed wedges of cheese with fries and it came with ramekin of raspberry jam. Fun fact: There is an old silver mine from 100 years ago, closed off, in the Cascade Mountains near Seattle called Monte Cristo. Didn't make alot of people rich, just gave jobs to folks who had experience in mines, mostly immigrants from Poland and Wales. There was a fancy hotel on my town named after the mine, it still has a nice ballroom used for weddings, the hotel converted to apts. One of my favorite sandwiches! I worked at a place in the late 80s that had a variation of this - two pieces of French toast, thin-sliced ham and turkey, Swiss cheese...one time I had to redo the Monte Cristo and took a bite (of the one I wrecked) before putting on the powdered sugar, and didn't dip it in the raspberry compote. It was served on rye bread with cheddar and Swiss cheeses, in addition to the turkey and ham, they added corned beef and used Thousand Island dressing rather than mayo. Also, they deep-fried it.
Yes many combinations. Thank you. Best, Rik
Makes perfect taste sense. As someone who enjoys honey with cheese on toast and marmalade in a bacon sandwich. I will definitely try making a Monte Cristo sandwich!🌷
Thank you. Best, Rik
I have never seen square slices of chicken or turkey, whatever it is. The ham looks great though! I think I'm going to try this even though it's far from healthy. Good job Rik, keep bringing back these old recipes.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Going to try this, looks scrumptious 😋😋😋
Thank you. Best, Rik
That's a proper sandwich and my Pop's FAVORITE SANDWICH ITEM, right in front of a Chicago Pepper Beef sandwich.
Thank you. Best, Rik
I'll have to wait a while bnefore I can try this, my hospital's Cardiac Surgery unit is fully booked for the next month! 😂
Thank you. Best, Rik
Try watching a few Carnivore vids, if only just for fun. I'll bet anything you want that not one of those in the Cardiac Surgery unit is a Carnivore. 😊
@@istudios225 i bet you are just a hoot at parties.
@@woolymittens I bet you wouldn't dare watch those Carnivore vids. Sad, because Carnivore has helped thousands avoid heart surgery and cleared up a whole host of chronic illnesses. After going Carnivore, people's lab results have shocked their doctors. But up to you, to each his own.
@@istudios225Out of curiosity, does the carnivore diet include cheese??
My goodness, I do believe we will have to do this for tonight. I was going to do the casserole from yesterday but that may have to wait until tomorrow. 😉
Thank you. Best, Rik
I made this with sharp cheddar and Swiss and it came out great. My presentation was perhaps not as beautiful as yours Rik, but it sure passed the taste test! Very filling. 😋
The Monte Cristo at Bennigan's retaurant was special. I found a recipe for it shared by a cook that used to work there. The key is cut the sandwich into halves, diagonally, and very tightly wrap the assembled halves in food wrap and refrigerate overnight. Once unwrapped for cooking, it stays together and compact. Then you can coat it in the french toast egg mixture and, yes, deep fry it in vegetable or canola oil. Not simply pan fry it, but deep fry it until golden and crispy. Sprinkle lightly with confectioners sugar and serve with raspberry preserves. NOTHING else like it!
Thank you. Are you sure? Best, Rik
I haven’t had a monte cristo in years. That looks freaking delicious 😋
Thank you. Best, Rik
Dear God. That looks so, so good.
Ha ha ha. You actually made my chuckle out loud. Thank you. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChef No Thank you.
We called them door steps 😁😁😁 Still do 😁😁😁 . I'm gonna have mine with whole cranberry sauce.
No ladylike way to eat them ..yummy yummy .😋😋
Henrietta, the cranberry sounds fantastic! There's a phrase - door steps! Haven't heard that in a while. Smiling. Thank you. Best, Rik
Like watching James May in his bunker kitchen making sandwiches. Love it!
Thank you. Best, Rik
Like so many others in the comments, the sandwiches I had were different. They were plunged into batter and then deep fried. They were great and I hadn't thought of them in years.
Thank you. Best, Rik
🇨🇦That is quite the mountain of a sandwich! A bit fiddly in the egg. Why do you boil the meat slices? I never heard of that being done before.
My preferred way with the pre packed - everyone has their own way. I'd rather know it free from anything. Thank you. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChef Thanks for explaining the why Rik, i was curious about that too especially given your many years of experience.
Thanks for letting us know why you boil the ham .great tip from a fantastic chef
Thanks for asking, saved me some time. 👍
