Without a doubt. I even have the McFarlane figures of this team, the greatest hockey team to every hit the ice. My favorite olympic hockey memory of all time. I was glued to the tv watching this game. Cheers Team Canada.
roy retired like a year later he had enough. plus roy got the cup a year before and had 3 other rings to have 4 in total. and is considered by many as the goat goalie. i think he's alright.
These moments captured with family both during and after make this video special. Such family pride, which is the embodiment of the hockey community as a whole, as families give so much to their children who want to excel in the game.
Being an 11-year-old Swedish kid who loved ice hockey and watching his first Olympics, I remember being so excited after the Sweden - Canada game. Sweden felt unstopable. Then BOOM, knocked out in the quarter final by Belarus. It's still considered by many Swedes to be the biggest tragedy to ever happen within Swedish sports (not including deaths and such of course).
I'm sorry, Erik. I hear you. It was a tragedy, especially considering Belarus then got decimated by Canada, whereas Sweden might have beat Canada. Hockey is like that. Unpredictable. I really do believe, though, the players do their best. I hate the fact that Sweden was so hard on their players after their loss to Belarus. It felt cruel given what these boys were already feeling, but maybe you have a different take? If so, I'd love to hear it. Be well, my fellow hockey fan!
Most people only remember the fluke goal that went in off Salo's head. But I think they underestimated Belarus. The team lost its focus: they started making defensive mistakes, slamming gates, barking at each other. I personally think the turning point in that game was when Belarus scored shorthanded. still I think the funniest comment at the time was an interview the Toronto Sun did with Expressen's Mats Olsson about the fan reaction back home: he revealed that some of the readers calling for the players' passports to be taken away.
I will go on record and say that this was the greatest team ever assembled. Eclipsing the 87 Canada Cup team. Mario, Kariya, Stevie Y, Lindros, Sakic, Fleury, Pronger, Neidermayer, Brodeur. We even had Cujo and Eddie as insurance. This was the greatest 4th line to play the game as well. That line alone combined for 1500+ goals and 3500+ pts. I'm so glad I lived this and relished every moment. I'll never forget for as long as I live. 🇨🇦🇨🇦 I still cry and get massive chills hearing Bob Cole.
Maybe greatest Canadian team ever assembled but not greatest Team. That would go to the 1980-1981 Soviet team, which dominated everyone, including Canada 8-1 and the NHL All Stars 6-0.
Yada, yada, yada, the '80 USA Olympic team would've beat you. Just like we did the great Russian team! And we didn't use professionals. Now that's something.
@@tonygambino5905 The Canadians beat the Soviets 7-3 four days before losing the final 8-1. Had the two teams played a series, it could have gone to the Canadians, as it did in 87. Definitely a great Soviet team but the greatest team ever? Mehh.
I beg to differ, that 87 canada cup team was stacked just as much as this gold medal team, difference I see is that the 87 team had line mates from stanley cup winning teams, the 2002 team didn't. The hockey was better in 87 as well I watched both series thoroughly and both teams are great but the 87 team with Grezt and Mario out do the 2002 team. But in the big picture both teams won !
This has been a most fascinating look behind the scenes of what goes into choosing Canada's Olympic team. What a class act and high quality leaders. And what can I say about our team. All have great hockey skills and most important of all, Canadian hearts. Need I say more.
'72 was amazing. '87 Canada Cup was a dream to watch. 2010 was hockey Gold. But '02 Gold Medal Game was the greatest hockey game I've ever watched... hands down the greatest team Canada has ever put on the ice.🇨🇦🥇🏅🎖🎉
Well if it was the greatest then why did they get hammered by the Swedes 5-2? No way was that the best ever. The '87 team was Canada's best, with both Mario AND Gretzky. But yeah this game was great. The Americans were awesome as well.
'72 was amazing? You mean when Bobby Clarke and the rest of the Canadian team played the dirtiest hockey in the history of the sport? No one outside Canada considers that a legitimate victory. The '02 team was not Canada's best ever. The US team was better that year. The '87 team was the best.
Agreed! I also liked the 2014 Olympic team, pretty amazing! They didn't score as much as they could have, but they completely shut down the opposition and stuck to a game plan!
@@tonygambino5905 it may not have been the best game in your opinion but for cryin out loud why cant people have their own opinion?!!! like wtf man!!! AND IT WAS THE BEST GAME EVER!!!!
I thought the same thing what if Mario and Wayne on the same NHL team for 10 years.Mario may have beaten Wayne's goals in a season and career goals and Wayne would've beaten his assists records. The goalies weren't great back then and with Mario and Wayne on the same line you may as well paint the goalie orange and call him pylon.lol
Most people don't know this, but the ice at Salt Lake was made by a Canadian and he place a loonie at centre ice, it's currently sitting in the Hall of Fame, you're welcome.
I remember watching this game as a kid in Ontario. My family was all glued to the tv. When the final buzzer went we grabbed our big canada flags and my brother and I ran outside and were waving it up and down the street. People were out cheering and car horns were honking everywhere. I had a bit of a cold so my mom was trying to bring me back inside but we were all just too pumped. My dad drove us downtown and everyone was just celebrating. Flags everywhere, horns going, smiles, and cheers. Was so great. One of my favourite memories.
Mario Lemieux, Sakikn,Gretsky Yzerman,Mckiness this is and will ever be the legendary hockey heroes of canada's History and the world!! My most favorite hockey memory!
By the final game it was Sakic-Iginla-Gagne and Lemieux-Yzerman-Kariya and Peca-Nieuwendyk-Fleury and Lindros-Nolan-Smyth. Four Norris-winning studs on defence: Pronger, MacInnis, Blake, Niedermeyer. 3-time Vezina-winner Marty Brodeur in net. 14 Hall-of-Famers (could be 17). Most were NHL captains or alternates. Veteran team (average age was 30). 27 Stanley Cups won between them. The 2002 team was one of the greatest collection of names ever assembled and one of the greatest Team Canada's of all-time.
Can you imagine getting on the ice and facing Mario Lemieux with his size and skill? Six foot four, two hundred and forty pounds and with all that hockey ability? That's NHL quality. Amazing player!
I was at Work that day 6am-6pm @ the Hospital ! Thankfully most of the patients were watching that game on tv.Apon delivering the Meals i was able to catch the end! Great game!!
Wayne G trying to sing the anthem through a GIGANTIC smile is my favorite memory of the gold medal game. I bet P. Roy was kicking himself for missing this.
@ The 1:27:40 mark that goal is the straw that broke the camels back. The way Sakic speeds up the ice protects the puck at full tilt in their zone and drops it to Yzerman. Game over that's hockey.
I don't remember much from watching this game live, I was nervous as fuck up until the last 5 minutes... it's nice re-watching it all these years later without my heart in my mouth the whole game
This is a really cheesy, not especially in-depth, public relations documentary, but there is some neat footage in here. I really like seeing the executive and coaching staff in meetings planning and debating which players will be on the team. It gives you a sense of what actually goes on in these rooms as fans, who often debate these kinds of things but without real stakes.
My team is the USA, but if they're out, Canada is my 2nd choice. Gretzky was right, seems like everyone else roots against them, because they're always the best and deepest team top to bottom, front to back. This was a hell of a tournament, and the best team won. Some of my all time favorite players were on the ice in that gold medal game. What an incredible pool of talent.
I feel Fleury's work in the corner that led to the goal that tied the game against the Czechs was the turning point in the tournament. Without that, we quite possibly don't win.
Thanks to “the great one” for backing him for the team when his career was taking a shit kicking in the eyes of the public and the hockey world in Canada 🇨🇦
I remember watching these games at school, the principal was a huge hockey guy and allowed every class to watch the games instead of school work. The teachers would roll in a television on a stand and we'd just watch the games.
Gretzky's insistence to take the best, regardless of age or reputation was key, and set the tone for modern Canadian international hockey rosters. 2006 was weak, between waves of talent, but 2010 and 2014 were prime examples, with gold medals as an easily predictable result. In the Canada Cup days this was not the case... For instance, 1987, the team had Dineen, Tochhet, C. Lemieux, Propp, and Brent Sutter. All solid players... BUT, they were chosen for reputation, while the more talented and skilled Steve Yzerman, Ron Francis, Brian Trottier, Marcel Dionne, Luc Robataille, Denis Savard, and Dino Ciccarelli were watching on T.V. (all the latter were much hotter at the time than the former). Switch these players and it is not as exciting a final with the Soviets. The Canucks win without the intrigue and stress. Hands down! For 1998 in Nagano, Bobby Clarke named a roster also based on reputation, and not on skill and talent as best suited for big international ice surfaces. So Zamuner, Linden, Stevens, Primeau and Corson were chosen over the obviously better (Wayne method): Murphy, Turgeon, Robataille, Recchi, and Oats. Perhaps Canada would have beaten the Czechs if they could have iced more talent. (Disclaimer, although I was reading the papers and watching at the tie, I do forget the injury status of the above mentioned men.) I'm just talking approach here, of Wayne's (best of now), vs. Keenan and Clarke's approach looking for toughness and chosing biased favourites.
The CC was before the 87 season started. Yzerman didn't even have his first 40 goal or 100 pt season yet. He was a great player but was still relatively young
Remembering both 87 and 02 the only thing I thought made 87 better was the goaltending, Fuhr was better for Canada than either Joseph or Brodeur over the whole tournament run. Though Brodeur got better with each game. Also if I remember correctly Clarke built the 98 to combat the USA who many felt had outmuscled Canada in the 96 world cup. As a result they were slower and less skilled than they should've been. Ironically both the US and Canada fell to the gritty faster Czechs.
If the NHL is going to Italy in 2026, here's what I have: Steven Stamkos (A)-Connor McDavid (A)-Mitch Marner Nick Suzuki-Nathan MacKinnon-Connor Bedard Brad Marchand-Sidney Crosby (C)-Sam Reinhart Jonathan Huberdeau-Ryan O'Reilly-Mark Stone Owen Power-Cale Makar Shea Theodore-Alex Pietrangelo (A) Morgan Rielly-Dougie Hamilton Darcy Kuemper Adin Hill Devon Levi GM: Doug Armstrong or Kelly McCrimmon HC: Bruce Cassidy AC: Jon Cooper, Jay Woodcroft, Jared Bednar

This will never get old. Golden. I was 10 years old and I still remember seeing Gretzkys son shooting on Cujo in the warm ups. What an amazing moment in Canadian hockey and just overall history.
First time viewer! Enjoyed watching these Canadian legends win the gold! Many are now in the HOF! Great presentation!
Rob Blake and Pronger holding down the blue line is nuts!
Pat Quinn reminds me so much of my Uncle John, when I think back to this Olympics it reminds me of being up in Sudbury for the holidays with the family and good times. Going nuts when we won the Gold! I miss these times a lot…
We are incredibly fortunate to understand what was happening behind the scenes. From management to coaching to players, every name is a household name. Thanks for this!
I just watched this, n am beaming with pride n smiles as I sit here, what 17yrs later 4 what I think, the greatest team 2ever hit the ice...so proud of our Boys n r Girls 4goin in2 the USA n taking what will always b ours...🇨🇦⭐️❤️
Without a doubt. I even have the McFarlane figures of this team, the greatest hockey team to every hit the ice. My favorite olympic hockey memory of all time. I was glued to the tv watching this game.
Cheers Team Canada.
The women’s 2002 team was fabulous as well
Both the men and the women were arguably the best.
2010 comes close too.
One of the best hockey plays ever involved no points for Mario. Brilliant nonetheless.
I love how roy held out for the cup but stevie y still got it
Tom Ace thank god roy didn’t go
@@2011Oly Roy was playing the best of all the goalie prior to the tourney and he had a great playoffs. 1 game away from the finals.
It is speculated that Roy couldn't pass a drug test and the playoffs where his public excuse
roy retired like a year later he had enough. plus roy got the cup a year before and had 3 other rings to have 4 in total. and is considered by many as the goat goalie. i think he's alright.
These moments captured with family both during and after make this video special. Such family pride, which is the embodiment of the hockey community as a whole, as families give so much to their children who want to excel in the game.
Great glimpse of the process...Excellent video, as a coach, to show your team as you prepare to battle for a championship.
Still my favorite team ever assembled
Yzerman had the greatest year ever that year. Gold medal and a stanley cup all one one leg.
So happy Theo Fleury was there. Gretzky believed in him and he didn’t let him down
Fleury played great
Being an 11-year-old Swedish kid who loved ice hockey and watching his first Olympics, I remember being so excited after the Sweden - Canada game.
That goal Salo let in off his head ! Tommy was never the same goalie after that series.
I still cry and get massive chills hearing Bob Cole.
What about 2010? Brodeur, luongo, iginla, Crosby, Keith, toews, Richards, doughty, pronger, niedermayer, fleury, weber, Boyle, Bergeron, getzlaf, Thornton
This has been a most fascinating look behind the scenes of what goes into choosing Canada's Olympic team. What a class act and high quality leaders. And what can I say about our team. All have great hockey skills and most important of all, Canadian hearts. Need I say more.
They saved the best for last Stevie Yzerman and he's #1 in our hearts and the true Captain for Canada..
This was the best hockey game at any level that I have ever seen
The '87 Canada Cup was likely the best series ever. Three games 6-5, and not because of bad goaltending. But I was only 3 in '72. ;)
This was a new generational moment. I participated in an impromptu parade down University Ave in Waterloo. Good times
I'm pretty sure I got these DVDs in a cereal box when I was a kid, cool to watch again!
Sakic is the real life Adam Banks
"It's not the coming out of port, but the coming back into port that determines the success of the voyage" - Pat Quinn, 2002 Salt Lake City RIP
What a great great documentary! Thanks for the wonderful Upload 🙏
Thank you for such insightful documentary.
Jarome Iginla went to Colorado 10 years too late. Would've scored 80 goals playing with Sakic in his prime.
Shinn18 conroy was fine. Langkow tho was kind of a cringe and collar puller.
Iginla Forsberg could have been the making of a second legion of doom line...
@@RandomPlaceHolderName with pronger
@Flatulence Pile Stick to baseball, grandpa.
Thanks for the memories 🇨🇦🥇
Thank you Max for all this... so sweet to remember... Your video made me sleep 2 hours shorter... lol !!!
You are a fantastic human being.
thank you
"Sakic and Yzerman, what about this duo?! Shot! Scores!!"
It's such a sweet irony isn't it?
Thank you so much, really love the video
I think this is peak era of hockey for me. All these rosters are stacked
Most people don't know this, but the ice at Salt Lake was made by a Canadian and he place a loonie at centre ice, it's currently sitting in the Hall of Fame, you're welcome.
casuals dont know this. Id argue damn near every canadian hockey fan knows this
Joe Sakic had a great series. One of the most under rated players of his time.
He won 3 stanley cups and an olympic gold medal. All well earned and deserved.
I wonder what a coaching tandem of Scotty Bowman (head) with assistants Glen Sather, Al Arbour, Pat Quinn and Pat Burns would've been like.
They would be tough in the corners but wouldn't score any goals.
That never gets old watching them win the Gold Metal, I was there during those games... goose bumps went away about 2 weeks ago.
RIP Pat Quinn
Bob Cole when he was at his best calling a game was legendary. "That's a goal", "Darn right it is"! 😂
RIP Bob Cole
Can you imagine getting on the ice and facing Mario Lemieux with his size and skill? Six foot four, two hundred and forty pounds and with all that hockey ability? That's NHL quality. Amazing player!
What’s so scary??? He wasn’t a checker !!
@@sammyweed4771 He used his size to his advantage offensively. The comment speaks to the intimidation of his ability to win a game, not hurt someone.
@@gunman462 lmao. He was a cherry picker. The guy could put the puck in the net . But he was not a two way player. Facts !!
@@sammyweed4771 Dude, you asked a question and I answered it. I had no idea you were a troll lol.
@@gunman462 lmao I’m not a troll. Love the game of Hockey, just throwing out some stats. I love # 66. Just with his size you would think he check more
I was at Work that day 6am-6pm @ the Hospital ! Thankfully most of the patients were watching that game on tv.Apon delivering the Meals i was able to catch the end! Great game!!
IM SO EXCITED FOR 2022
Should have been watching the best players in the world compete 2022! It’s sad for the players and fans.
OMG - I had forgotten how Mario...MARIO... let that pass from Pronger go between his legs for someone with a better angle. What a player.
Steve yzerman and Joe sakic are so fucking similar. But sooooo amazing
Jarome ingnla is a beast
The perfect mix of players and coaches. Amazing!!!! And Brodeur shutting the cages ❤️
Was this a national team or an All Star-team?:D with that lineup it would've been unfair if they wouldn't have won
This was crazy emotional to watch.
It's not often you see Pat Quinn smiling. What a great game!
MVP should go to Bob Cole
Wayne G trying to sing the anthem through a GIGANTIC smile is my favorite memory of the gold medal game. I bet P. Roy was kicking himself for missing this.
ChristineCAlb1 meh probably not. Guy has so many awards already
I’ll never forget this amazing game
The end of such a great era in hockey. That team canada will go unmatched as far as talent goes.
ah yes ... eternal blessings to Pat Quinn ... a Gold Medal was not ever more deserving !!!
Back when I was a kid, I ate an exuberant amount of cereal to collect all these dvds!
@ The 1:27:40 mark that goal is the straw that broke the camels back. The way Sakic speeds up the ice protects the puck at full tilt in their zone and drops it to Yzerman. Game over that's hockey.
Yzerman and Sakic, two opposing #19 wearing captains who went to war against each other for years....and would a few months later again
🇨🇦 Even 13 years after the 1989 Stanley Cup Championship Joe ..Al ...Theo looked great. Wow a awesome hockey team
Still hard to see Pat Quinn, R.I.P
I don't remember much from watching this game live, I was nervous as fuck up until the last 5 minutes... it's nice re-watching it all these years later without my heart in my mouth the whole game
Sakic was all over the ice in the Gold medal game. Dudes such an under rated legend
Gretzky: "I checked into it (Fleury's personal life). He is fine."
😂🤣
I remember watching this on VHS as a kid.
The Canadian lineup is unreal
Even though it's not quite as iconic, I'd put Gretzky's speech after the Czech tie, right up there with Espo's speech in '72.
I remember watching these games at school, the principal was a huge hockey guy and allowed every class to watch the games instead of school work. The teachers would roll in a television on a stand and we'd just watch the games.
Watched this whole thing with a smile on my face the whole time. Great hockey - a fabulous win.
Yzerman being left off in 1987 by Keenan was CRIMINAL. He was the 3rd best offensive player in the world at the time.
The only thing Wayne couldn't get on this team was HIMSELF. How much do you think he was wishing he could be down there on the ice with them.
The CC was before the 87 season started. Yzerman didn't even have his first 40 goal or 100 pt season yet. He was a great player but was still relatively young
Yes, agreed.
They don’t make players like this anymore wow I miss this team
