Amazing how Talbot will always be loved and respected as much as almost any player that played for the team but once he went to the Flyers, they never appreciated him the same way. I live out in in Joisey now sadly, and went to a comedy show in Philly one night in 2012. While sitting at my table I saw Max come in with two girls with him and no one else there even noticed him. After the show people had pretty much all left and he was still sitting at the table with absolutely no one coming up to him. My wife (gf at the time) knew I wanted to say hi and get an autograph but I didn't want to pester him when he was with "company" so she walked over and asked for me. He looked thrilled that anyone even knew who he was and when I told him I was a Penguins fan he chuckled in a almost knowing way because of course. He didn't sign my autograph with anything Flyers, like his Flyers number, but with his Pens number and "Superstar" after his name. Probably made his whole night. Mine too.
Listen as Flyers fan I loved having Talbot on our side, was weird because he was a Penguin, I was annoyed when they moved him & shocked a bit when his career ended so soon (to me anyway)
Excellent job telling the story!! as a native Pittsburgh and a diehard hockey fan, my entire life and a season-ticket holder for Crosby’s first four years and someone that took advantage of the student rush program to get tickets before that in the 01-02,02-03,and 03-04 seasons you did a perfect job of explaining what was going on in Pittsburgh then
Who would've thought that the most consequential player of the post-Therrien years would've been Michel Therrien's favorite guy? Max is forever a hero in Pittsburgh, down to the point of being a guest PA announcer for French-Americans Night the past few years.
Nice job putting this all together. I remember watching this as it happened and the fight absolutely changed the game. There is a great interview with Talbot where he admits he was responsible for the first goal against and new he had to do something. It would be great if you could clip it into this video. I like how you went back and set up the whole history leading up to the moment. Nice job.
As a lifelong Flyers fan, Carcillo was one of the dumbest players I’ve seen play. I still remember him instigating that fight when we were up 3-0 and my first thought was, “Why???” Why would you give the Penguins any life? I miss those Flyers/Pen playoff matches even back to the late 80’s. They are the definition of a great rivalry in sports. You hate the other team but respect the hell out of him. Unfortunately our management has sucked for the past decade as we are mired in mediocrity. I don’t have much hope in Briere as we actually took a step back this year losing Gauthier and Hart. I’m sorry that Hextall ruined your team too.
Hahahah man carcillo was still entertaining. Next video is on the 2010 flyers man, that team was my childhood. Will forever stand by trading Richards and carter were the 2 stupidest moves the flyers could’ve done.
Hockey. The only sport that can compete with the excitement of football games. I’d argue it’s more exciting in the playoffs because it’s an entire series not just a game which any team can win. A series. The best team always wins.
As a pens fan I always loved Geno but the pens were an eye lash away from having Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin…. That would have been crazy! I imagine 5 or 6 cups not 3
I remember in the 2003-2004 season when I was at a Screaming Eagles game and took a puck to the head in the audience. I was eight years old and was given a jersey signed by the whole team as a get better gift. I still have that jersey, and Fleury's signature is on the shoulder.
Those two playoff runs both ending against the Red Wings sealed the deal for me. Hockey is the greatest sport on the planet. This channel is epic man, instant Sub.
Knew it was the Max fight immediately seeing the thumbnail. Gotta admit though, I 100% forgot we had Peter Sykora 😆. And i was there for Mullen, Francis, 66 & 68, and the 90's boys! Shame shame 😞. Great vid though. Goosebumps
Things I forgot about. Gonchar missing half the season. Guerin being such an effective net-front presence. And Talbot's turnover in Game 6 before the fight. Also, a subtle moment is when Crosby ties the game at 3, Kunitz grabs his jersey and pulls him away from the front of the net in case any Flyers wanna screw with him.
Speaking as a Flyers fan, I never liked Carcillo - and this fight is a big reason why. There are hills to die on, I get that, but that wasn't one of them. He was just a dumb penalty waiting to happen - and this one led directly to a momentum shift and... there we were.
If I remember this correctly, the Rangers were supposed to have the first pick that year but they changed it to the lottery. I know that it was controversial because Crosby was practicing with Mario before they picked him. The Penguins were bankrupt and were going to sell and move to a different state. Then magically got the number 1 pick and got Crosby
Weird seeing these guys as kids again. God I'm old. I remember right where I was for that game and rolling my eyes at Edzo talking about it being a mistake for Carcillo to fight Talbot.
@@StuartTurner13 They were getting run out of the building and I flipped when Talbot shooshed the crowd. "Who the f--k are you shooshing, Talbot?!?! You guys are getting KILLED! STOP SHOWING OFF AND PLAY HOCKEY!!!", etc. A minute later Geno banged in that rebound and away we went. That whole run was so stressful (except for about 90% of the Canes series...they just couldn't hang after Malkin broke them in game 2).
As a flyers fan this was a great series.also the beginning of our downfall.the flyers trading Richards ,Carter and allowing brierre to leave destroyed this club .we got to watch out nucleus of talent win two Stanley Cup for the kings.im 51 yrs old and lifetime flyers fan .these trades were the worst thing the franchise did and we never recovered from it
as an outsider, I never understood the trades.. Richards was the heart and soul of the team and if the management just believed and got them a goalie, they would have won the cup in 2012 and I stand by that
I never realized how close ovechkin and Crosby could have been on the same team if pens won that lottery . My goodness. I know they still got malkin but still imagine ovechkin and Crosby 😂
I heard an interview with Bill Guerin last year where he raved about the guts of Max Talbot taking on the clearly better fighter in Dan Carcillo and how it effected the Penguins. He said if Max could lay it out like that, the rest of the team better do the same... and they did.
First off, let me complement you for an entertaining and mostly factual summary of the rise of the Penguins, and how, as many opposition fans would argue, the NHL conspired to help them regain NHL relevancy. It's certainly a great turnaround story, and as someone who grew up in the state, albeit a fan of the other Pennsylvania team, while I relish the cross state rivalry, I also have to give credit where it's due. Sid's influence on the modern generation of NHL stars can not be denied, as for the most part they grew up watching him and seeking to emulate many of his signature skills. With that said, I am amused by the clickbait title and find this to be a prime example of how ridiculous a lot of hockey fans are in their beliefs. FIGHTS DON'T MATTER. All that happened in this game, is that the "worst lead in hockey" proved once again to be the "worst lead in hockey". If anything, Dan Carcillo even playing for the flyers, was a symptom of a disconnect between the young flyers core lead by Richards and Carter, and the 70's era management as personified by GM Paul Holmgren. Ostensibly, a desire to control the locker room and curb the "party boys" lead to the terrible decision to trade Scottie Upshall for Dan "carbomb" Carcillo, which set the stage for this fight. Rumor has it, that the trade was primarily intended to curb the party group. It also was an early example of a trend that undermined the reputation of the franchise, as a "player friendly" destination, adding to a history of poor communication and relations with players that continues to plague the team in present times. Upshall would state later, that he found out he was traded, not from the Flyers directly, but rather, by hearing about it on a local sports radio station. In the trade, the Flyers got a middleweight who was slower and less skilled, with a propensity to punch people in the face even when doing so seemed to have no strategic value. The team already had Arron Asham and Riley Cote as well as solid energy player Darroll Powe to drop the gloves if need be. About the only argument that could be made, was that the Flyers had a strong Right wing group, and lacked left wing depth at the time, but that's reaching. Flyers management tried to sell the trade at the time, as an example of the Flyers getting a superior overall player, which is a claim that few fans were buying. I can't emphasize enough how much this move derailed a team that was on an absolute tear, and how stupid the trade was: The Flyers sent Upshall with his 7g/14a, plus a 2nd round pick, to the dismal Coyotes for Carcillo's 3g/7a. With more ice time and an elevated role, Upshall would double his production in the final 18 games, putting up another 8g/13a, while Carcillo's run with the Flyers (including playoffs) was 4 assists! To make matters worse, Upshall had performed well in the prior year's series loss to the Pens, where he had 3g/4a in the series. In summary, the seeds of this loss were planted in that trade, and way it undermined the morale of the team at a time when they were playing well, only to limp into the playoffs going roughly 500 in their last 20 games after the trade, and 5-4-1 in the last 10. Had the Flyers won a single game, they would have jumped over the Pens, and enjoyed home ice advantage in this series. Pens fans might believe that Max Talbot (a nice player in his day) getting pummeled and then putting a finger to his lips actually meant something, when the reality is that Flyers fans who actually followed the team in that era, saw a young team that was lacking the swagger and confidence they needed to play the hockey they were capable of.
I appreciate the kind words, and the honesty. I was a diehard flyers fan back in 2010, my first taste of playoff hockey, and I can imagine you'd agree but I was crushed when they traded richards and carter, in my eyes another move to rid the "party boy" culture, I'd love to hear what you thought when those 2 got moved though
@@StuartTurner13 100% agree. That trade was devastating, given how close the team was in that era, with the SCF loss to Chicago. In fact, your video in a way highlights the fact that there was a lot of parity in the league at that time. Flyers and Pens were tied in points for the season, and both had a nearly identical team +/-. Having momentum going into the playoffs can not be understated. I watched Richards and then Carter in LA, and saw how important they were to the Kings winning their cups. Unfortunately for Richards, he sustained a series of concussions that lead to an early retirement, but the Kings don't win their cups without this trade happening, which will always leave me with the question of "what if" the team hadn't been blown up.
Real good video. Being a Wings fan- I don't agree that it was the most important in NHL history. For us it would be the Wings/Avs brawl back in the 90s. I can see where a Pens fan would think this one is tops though.
Just imagine if Philadelphia didn't trade away Carter & Richards, they would have Claude Giroux as the 2nd line center!! Philly made a huge mistake & cost them the cup
Still don't know how your teammate getting his ass handed to him would motivate your team, but the Penguins made it happen, so clearly I'm not that bright.
You forgot to add the 2009 refereeing and how it aided the Penguins. There are even reports on this. You should’ve added that in, how lopsided it was, and how a majority of calls were questionable. However, you probably left it out because of the dislikes you’d get…. smart move.
We hated him.but that is a sign of respect .same way pens fans hated lindros.i wish the flyers didn’t trade away carter ,Richards and brierre ,this would have been a great rivalry throughout the 2010’s ,unfortunately the flyers management has been absolutely terrible since this series..im 51 years old pens vs flyers was such a fun rivalry my entire life .except the last decade the flyers have been horrible
Great video, but your titles a bit off. There's another fight that kicked off a longer, 4-cup dynasty. It happened March 26, 1997. ESPN made a documentary on it and the rivalry involved.
Wait...wtf....how the heck is this not the worst trade ever...M. Samsonov and. 3rd rounder for the 1st pick overall.....M.A. Fluery.....ahhhhhh...I'm a die hard hockey fan...and i didn't know this....but like wtf...this is by far the best steal...worst sell...biggest trade ever in hockey...and yes...more then W.G. WOW. I hate Pits. So much..yes I'm a flyers fan...but wow.....this is slow low and scumbaggery
I think you’re exaggerating but spoiled pens fans that want rid of Geno don’t understand that they’ve NEVER gone all the way without him catching fire (with him on the roster). He was the key to them getting over the hump every time.

Guerin was such an unreal pickup, great leadership presence
The Ironic part is that Talbot lost the fight by a landslide, but still created a spark in penguins that ignited! lol
yeah it was pretty funny that seeing their buddy get worked in a fight inspired them😭😭
I never get tired seeing Crosby own the flyers
Funniest part watching the whole game was like 75% of the chants were “Crosby sucks” then he buries 2 goals😭
Keep em coming nobodies making nhl content like this 🙌🏾
Hell yeah bro no plans on stopping 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Speaking as a Flyers fan, I never liked Carcillo - and this fight is a big reason why.
There are hills to die on, I get that, but that wasn't one of them.
He was just a dumb penalty waiting to happen - and this one led directly to a momentum shift and... there we were.
Pointless fight. That’s it
If I remember this correctly, the Rangers were supposed to have the first pick that year but they changed it to the lottery. I know that it was controversial because Crosby was practicing with Mario before they picked him. The Penguins were bankrupt and were going to sell and move to a different state. Then magically got the number 1 pick and got Crosby
Wouldn’t be surprised at all if Bettman gave them the helping hand a bit… but also interesting to see what happens in pit once everyone retires
Weird seeing these guys as kids again. God I'm old. I remember right where I was for that game and rolling my eyes at Edzo talking about it being a mistake for Carcillo to fight Talbot.
hahaha tell me about it bro, that's a sick memory though... if you're a pens fan lol
Little did we know Hossa would pull a Benedict Arnold and Dupuis would be an all time penguin
Dupuis man… what an unreal throw-in
Okay the sarcasm for fans dying to see the nhl come back and the image of a unanimous NO from every single state in America is just pure evil lmao
Richards was the heart and soul of the team and if the management just believed and got them a goalie, they would have won the cup in 2012 and I stand by that
The first 16 minutes are 'history of the Pens'. The fight arrives at approx. 18 min. If you are a hockey fan, saved you some time.
Great video dude!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed bro
What is the name of the track/song at 6:34, please?
Opposite of adults- Chiddy bang
Dope video as always! If i may ask, are u a penguins fan?
Nah I’m a Canucks fan, but Crosby was a huge part of my childhood, golden goal is what got me into hockey
Also thanks bro I’m glad you enjoyed!
Fair enough, good luck in the playoffs against Nashville! I'm getting ready for another let down with the leafs 😅😪
I still remember telling my uncle. Why is he fighting? They have a lead!!
I love carcillo but that fight was not needed at all, super pointless
I watched fleury every time he played the bathurst titans in his draft year. He was insane
His highlights are ridiculous
I never realized how close ovechkin and Crosby could have been on the same team if pens won that lottery . My goodness. I know they still got malkin but still imagine ovechkin and Crosby 😂
Imagine that shit😭 ovi would have 1000 goals already
good vid
Thanks buddy glad you enjoyed!
In history?
The 97 Wings (vs Avs) might have a laugh at that. But, as a secondary Pens fan, I should say that this WAS huge.
Not gonna lie the title is to get more views. That 97 brawl is easy number one spot
I can respect that honesty
Remember when Chara beat his ass. Not 1 Penguin stepped up
😭😭
"The first back-to-back in post-lockout history" is among the dumbest qualifiers I have ever seen. It isn't like hockey history reset at the lockout
I mean the salary cap does make it pretty hard to win back to back cups….
Kinda cool how SIDS and Mario’s first goals were against Boston.
Lemieux’s first goal gotta be the most national league of all time, first shift, first shot…
I bet Talbot never had to buy dinner for the rest of his time in Pit
No way. 09 Talbot should be in the rafters
"fans were dying to see hockey come back" *almost 70% of people in the poll didn't give a shit* lmfao
😭😭😭
I heard an interview with Bill Guerin last year where he raved about the guts of Max Talbot taking on the clearly better fighter in Dan Carcillo and how it effected the Penguins. He said if Max could lay it out like that, the rest of the team better do the same... and they did.
what a pickup guerin was holy shit, such a great leader
thanks for this video
You’re welcome man hope you enjoyed!
I can see where a Pens fan would think this one is tops though.
oh i agree fully. That brawl started the wings dynasty, had to chuck it in the title for the clicks yk ;)
well done Stuart Turner.
thanks horsewrecker🫡🫡🫡
Did not know the ducks were in the running for Crosby. My feelings are hurt
Also didn’t know the iconic talbot shhh was after a horrendous fight loss
@@migundiii1920 ikr he got lit up😭
At least you got bobby ryan!!!!
Just imagine if Philadelphia didn't trade away Carter & Richards, they would have Claude Giroux as the 2nd line center!! Philly made a huge mistake & cost them the cup
i've been saying this bro. 2 of the stupidest trades of all time, locked them in mediocrity for years.
I argue the 97 fight between the Avs and Wings was more important
Oh yeah it definitely is. Had to hittem w the clickbait;)
This was really well done, you should be very proud of yourself.
appreciate it bro, means alot!
Moral of the story if you're a detroit fan is don't depend on Philly..EVER! 😂
Hahahaha you have no idea how mad I was when Philly blew it for the wings😂😂😂
Still don't know how your teammate getting his ass handed to him would motivate your team, but the Penguins made it happen, so clearly I'm not that bright.
legendary

god bless stuart turner
god bless ckurse ;)
You forgot to add the 2009 refereeing and how it aided the Penguins. There are even reports on this. You should’ve added that in, how lopsided it was, and how a majority of calls were questionable. However, you probably left it out because of the dislikes you’d get…. smart move.
Talbot should have won the Conn Smythe for that.
2 goals in a 2-1 win in game 7 of the finals is storybook. Def had the key to the city that summer
Music feels a bit loud compared to the voiceover, but still, good video :)
Thanks for pointing that out, I’ll be sure to fix it in the next one!
Crosby makes the town of philidelphia cry
We hated him.but that is a sign of respect .same way pens fans hated lindros.i wish the flyers didn’t trade away carter ,Richards and brierre ,this would have been a great rivalry throughout the 2010’s ,unfortunately the flyers management has been absolutely terrible since this series..im 51 years old pens vs flyers was such a fun rivalry my entire life .except the last decade the flyers have been horrible
it's hilarious hearing the "crosby sucks" chants even after he scored the game tying goal lmao
They assembled a great team. But if Datsyuk, Lidstrom, and Ericsson were all healthy for the 2009 finals. Detroit was going back to back no question
no doubt, that wings team was fuuuuucking loaded
I will forever love the Pens
They also fired the french coach who was a looser... (I'm french and Habs fan)
Hahahaha therrien on the habs was an experience
Great video, but your titles a bit off. There's another fight that kicked off a longer, 4-cup dynasty.
It happened March 26, 1997. ESPN made a documentary on it and the rivalry involved.
oh yeah i'm aware, had to be dramatic for the extra clicks ;)
@StuartTurner13 I appreciate the honesty lol
I know he's older but I wish the hawks hadn't traded Fleury
He was solid in Chicago. I remember he had a legacy game against the Canucks one time that was a frustrating watch
Atlanta Flashers?
Glad someone else noticed this, Thought I was tripping
So, as always, Flurry was the key player for Pittsburgh not Crosby.
Except for 2016 and 2017
The fight had nothing to do with it and everything to do with garbage goaltending from Biron.
Typical flyers goaltending definitely played a factor.
Only team in nhl history to beat the red wings in a game 7 at the Lou
That’s crazy, thanks for the fact I never knew that, makes that championship that much crazier
Briere goal looks more legal now knowing how scandalous the Penguins actually are..
I'm a die hard flyers fan.. feck the pens
Hahaha you talking about his goal in game 1 2012? That was hilarious
Phil Kessel was robbed of the 2016 Conn Smythe Trophy.
Bro I’ll live and die by this.
Ironic story, bylsma HATED talbot…….he was underrated & should have retired here
Really?? That’s so hard to believe, but talbot going to Philly was pretty hilarious
Also - this fucking video should have been five minutes, tops. Jesus Christ.
Why?
Why did so many people not care the season was canceled?
I think it was just Americans not caring about hockey
Wheres the fight?
In the video
Wait...wtf....how the heck is this not the worst trade ever...M. Samsonov and. 3rd rounder for the 1st pick overall.....M.A. Fluery.....ahhhhhh...I'm a die hard hockey fan...and i didn't know this....but like wtf...this is by far the best steal...worst sell...biggest trade ever in hockey...and yes...more then W.G.
WOW.
I hate Pits. So much..yes I'm a flyers fan...but wow.....this is slow low and scumbaggery
I think Panthers had Luongo at the time. Maybe that’s why. Still weird to me though.
they traded for the 3rd overall and samuellson, terrible trade considering they got nothing for luongo like 3 years later🤣
Crosby is just not as important as you all would like him to be. Malk was the main core.
Tough to say, but malkin was a total force while Crosby had the concussions
I think you’re exaggerating but spoiled pens fans that want rid of Geno don’t understand that they’ve NEVER gone all the way without him catching fire (with him on the roster). He was the key to them getting over the hump every time.
