Roy Wood is a very under appreciated British music icon, a giant in the music world and this is one of his very best.

He really set the framework for ELO - the use of classical instruments, the tracking of vocals, the overall production.

Carl Wayne was the main lead vocalist with the Move up to 1970, he was also lead vocalist with the Hollies 2000-2004, married to Susan Hanson or Miss Diane to us old crossroads fans, he was a fantastic singer and fine actor too! RIP

Their greatness is really apparent here in this live performance.

    • @misterteaification
      @misterteaification Рік тому +2

It's not a live performance as such. Trevor's bass isn't even plugged in. Almost certainly what they did was to record a rough performance in the TV studio and then mime to that for the TV footage. That technique was used for TOTP for many years, which is why so many TOTP performances feature the show's orchestra and backing vocalists. If you look at Carl you can sense his frustration that he isn't actually quite doing what he would do on stage.

I was born in 68 , and to me music like this is more real to me than all the new crappy singers . There are a few newer artists that amaze me but not as many as the 60s 70s and 80s.mostly it's indie artists that carry the torch from those good old days.

Cast your mind back ten years
To the girl who's next to me in school
If I put my hand upon her leg
She'd hit me with a rule

    Though tomorrow won't be long
You're gonna have to play it cool
    You've been fascinated by her
She could set the place on fire

Run and get the fire brigade
    Get the fire brigade
See the buildings start to really burn
    (Ooh) Get the fire brigade
    Get the fire brigade
If you jump, you've got to wait your turn

    Friends all seem to laugh
I feel I have to make a compromise
    Try to reassure myself
My head must need some exercise

Half past ten in the morning
She just took me by surprise
True, she set the place on fire
    You've been fascinated by her

Run and get the fire brigade
    Get the fire brigade
See the buildings start to really burn
    (Ooh) Get the fire brigade
    Get the fire brigade
If you jump, you've got to wait your turn

    The lights across the street
Throw a rainbow in her hair
I'd love you all to meet her
I'll be there, I'll be there

Notice that my eyes have been
    A misty place since Saturday
Brings a feeling we might need
    The fire engines anyway

    Though tomorrow won't be long
We're gonna have to play it cool
    You've been fascinated by her
She could set the place on fire

Run and get the fire brigade
    Get the fire brigade
See the buildings start to really burn
    (Ooh) Get the fire brigade
    Get the fire brigade
If you jump, you've got to wait your turn

I was about eight when this song came out. I remember it on the TV from what I suppose was Top of the Pops. I liked it then and still do. This colour version is great for a TV tech-bore like me. A few good shots of a PC60 camera and the luxury of all the cameras having a zoom on board was Christmas-time for the Directors. Carl Wayne's 'ooohh' seemed to grow in intensity throughout the performance. I think he was enjoying himself. Woody didn't have his shades on in this song, I guess by the time they did 'Blackberry Way' he was dazzled by the 5Kw scoop in his eyes. Thanks for the post.

I'm not convinced it is, unless there's someone off-camera playing lead guitar. Roy's strumming doesn't seem to me to account for anything like all the guitar we're hearing. But the vocals seem to be totally live.

No, I've played in bands before, thank you, I know the difference between the sound of a bass and the sound of a guitar.

    • @waltdefucq6106
      @waltdefucq6106 7 років тому

Nice try, but.. listen at 0:27 and again at 1:06. When the group was a five-piece, those arpeggios would have been played by Roy, but Trevor would have played the background chords - or maybe the other way about. So is Roy playing both of them here? On one 12-string? I seriously doubt it - there's probably someone in the wings on guitar.
Bear in mind that not all 'Colour Me Pop' sessions were live - see the Small Faces 'Song of a Baker' for proof.

I totally agree with the notion of taste - the Brits were considerably farther ahead of their American music listening/purchasing/playing counterparts.
And not a great deal has changed, if the current trend of Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame inductees are of any indication nowadays...:-x
How the Move - and Roy Wood in particular - don't receive plaudits in deference to other bands of the era is truly criminal...

snerper Oh dear. That is a fact that saddens me. I liked Carl Wayne and I actually quite liked Miss Diane.

Kat knights I really hope we don't go The" Crossroads" route. It was corny, no question but actors have to make a living. And I quite liked it: my mum loved it.

Kat knights I worked as a courier in the day job and a takeaway delivery driver at night to supplement my poor wages, I guess you could say, I was a delivery courier and a curry deliverer! Anyway one of my regulars at the curry job was Paul Henry who played Benny, and he was always a good tipper and a real nice guy, he gave me £20.00 for a Christmas tip, that was a lot of money 25 years ago, especially as I worked at a courier firm owned by a modern day Ebenezer Scrooge! He had four drivers, at Christmas we never even got a card off him, but he had us taking a bottle of whisky and a card to each of his regular customers, and, get this, he even got them to sign for them to make sure we never kept a bottle for ourselves! One of his drivers, not me, honestly, let his wife know he was shagging his secretary most lunch times, she caught them in the act, and what made it worse, the secretary had only recently got married to her long term boyfriend! The shit hit the fan, and we drivers ended up out of work, turns out it was the wife's money that was funding the business and she pulled it all out, resulting in the business collapsing in a few short weeks! Every cloud has a silver lining though, it prompted me to move away and we headed down here to Brighton, on the other hand, that bastard headed for the divorce courts and eventual bankruptcy! Karma wins again!

+snerper Just picking the bones out of this story, I am getting that Paul Henry who played Benny was a nice guy and a generous tipper. Nice to hear
