Unboxing + Reacting to SYOS Mouthpieces!

- Опубліковано 29 чер 2020
- In this video, I try out 2 alto saxophone mouthpieces - the SYOS Steve Kortyka model and the SYOS Godwin Louis model, and I compare them to my 2 rubber mouthpieces, the John Thomas Custom and the Meyer 7M NY. What makes these SYOS models unique is that they are 3D printed, so the measurements are able to be very precise and consistent. They allow you to customize mouthpieces on their website to any degree of specifics you want - it's incredible! Usually, I've been wanting to try one of these for several months now. Finally got my hands on them! My favorite part about them is that they are colorful. Usually, when someone walks into a room with any colorful gear on their saxophone setup, you immediately associate them as noobs. But these mouthpieces are the real deal - professionals are using these everyday! Has anyone even read this far in the description? If so, you are incredible, and a true master of reading. I just finished reading an entire book not too long ago and man, it's been a while since I've done that. Never, ever again. lol jk. Okay I hope you enjoy this video!

Genuinely curious: Which one did you prefer + why?
Not sure?! You sound beautiful on all of them. Which is easiest to play?
Chris Higgins Honestly the Steve one felt really good. It also plays subtone incredibly easily, which I had some difficulty doing with the Godwin model. But, I only tried 2 different reeds on them so far, so there is a lot more to discover!
Saxologic I feel like the Steve one had a nice balance between bright & dark. Obviously got to spend some time with the mouthpiece to get to know it. I bought the Tivon Pennicott tenor mouthpiece from SYOS and it’s great. I went back to my Otto Link though because I don’t play tenor very much.
I thought the Meyer won pretty decisively. Great projection, nice full well rounded tone. The SYOS pieces have this subtle but still significant lack of depth somehow. Feels like the SYOS pieces kind of.. suck the resonance out of your tone. Only slightly, but still
Godwin one looks cool and I loved the sound
You have a soothing voice, I fell asleep twice
:O
Saxologic I think it’s time for you to quit sax videos, and start an asmr channel ASAP lmao.
Laser Cat Ok I am quitting sax just for u!!!!!!!
Saxologic pls don’t
Saxologic woah woah woah woah woah, no no no no
The Godwin Louis makes the horn look like a toy gun. Y'know how they got that orange tip at the end of the barrel? Yeah, it looks like that. LOL
Haha very dangerous!!!!
"oh wow bubble rap very rappy and bubbly and stuff"
-Nathan Graybeal 2020
I was about to comment this! Haha
Meyer 7M NU definitely sounds the best on you
Agreed
It sounds Amazing
"Everything's metallic except the mouthpiece, I think that's the coolest thing ever"
Hard rubber mouthpieces: 👁️👄👁️
If this video was food i’d eat it
Man you talk so calmly and smooth throughout the whole vid, and then that scream at the end 😂. That got me ngl. Anyway good vid as usual
Love how the syos handles altissimo.. also I love that excercise
Thanks!
The moment you changed the angle I let out a gasp out how good they look
the godwin lucas has such a cool tonality to it.
reminds me of the sound of the players at the original jazz house in new orleans.
Pronunciation: "Core-tea-ka" ha ha, went to school with Steve, awesome dude!
You sound like Owen Wilson.
I preferred the NY Meyer. Love the brightness and overall dimensions of sound it provides; it provides lot more of a commanding tone.
You should do a video on discussion mouthpiece specs and giving recommendations on which ones people should try. I’m going to music school in the fall and currently play on a metal Belmonte with a 7 tip opening, small chamber, medium baffle. I only play it because there’s so many options out there that I don’t really know what to pick and there aren’t any good music stores within driving p distance that have a good selection of mouthpieces to try. Closest one is 3 hours away driving. Idk I think talking about mouthpieces in a video would be great and helpful to a lot of people! Thanks! Love the channel!
If I had to pick one, I'd go for the Steve Kortyka. I found the other one too dark for my taste, but that is me. I think you sounded great no matter what.
Hey Saxologic! I got your MK merch! It is AWESOMEEE!!!!
Whitney da Poh B Thanks!! Take a pic of you wearing it and send it to my gmail!
Man you sound great on all of them!! I'd love to see a video on how you practice altissimo. Everything is so clean and consistent up there!
Thanks man we ought to collab at some point yes!?
Saxologic Duddeee that would be incredible I’m so down!
So did you?
@@sampowellmusic oof I actually forgot about this, I think I sent an arrangement to him of something but the master is a busy man😰
The red has vanished sadly and now we have this new black here. Looks nice. Mouthpiece = :O
Thanks man! Purple won the vote but my dad had this giant black curtain that wasn’t being put to use so I was like I’ll just settle for this.
Saxologic The black looks good 👍
Great video man, love the workout! FYI I had to lightly sand the table of both my syos pieces to get them to seal properly....the difference was night and day. For people with a syos, make sure you do the pop test before passing judgement.
Interesting!!! Thank you for that
You should make a video showcasing all of your favorite books that you use for practicing, and maybe your favorite workouts
Nice video! I preferred you on the John Thomas and Meyer. For my ears it had a much sweeter sound and the articulation seemed cleaner. You still sounded ace on the others though but as we all know it’s all down to personal taste👌❤️
Bro, I just got recommended your video about the Mario kart lick (loved it btw) but I thought your name sounded familiar, and then I realised I used to be in a clan with you in clash of clans and clash royale (I can't remember the name but the leader was king harry) and I just thought it was super funny. Keep up the great work!!
Carter M. Thanks man clash was the best!!!
Any good mouth piece you recommend for a soprano sax player?
The guy's solo reminded me a bit of Charlie Parker's performance of "I can't get started with you"
Definitely a cool idea. I'm curious how durable/cleanable it ends up being - judging by the layer lines it looks like they are just printing it using a pretty basic 3D printer. Given IMO their real value is the custom models they generate it would be cool if they could partner with a contract manufacturer to offer different printing processes with better surface finishes and different materials (including metal!).
Maybe it's just you but that Godwin Louis mouthpiece gave me chills.
The SYOS Steve Kortyka one sounded the best to me.
I've been playing saxophone for 13 years now and it amazes me that 3D printed mouthpieces sound this good.
It’s impressive for sure!
@@Saxologic The bright colored ones make your Sax look like a toy, which I actually kinda dig.
12:19 spitting straight fact.
Loved the Undertale Shop Jazz cover btw...
I liked the sound you got from the Steve Kortyka
great review. 🔥
What reeds did you play on the mouthpieces? Which mouthpieces offers less resistance? Which mouthpiece can subtone easier with?
Drinkin game: shot for every time he says “France”
Lol!!
When you say Meyer NY, you are referring to the ones from the 100th anniversary?
Nice video! I guess you sound the best with the Meyer. Why did you use the sell phone instead the AT microphone for recording your saxophone?
bro the ending got me good
ooooh baby that Meyer though. I played Meyer 7 for a year that my professor gave me to try. The only reason I didn't buy one was cause the Theo Wanne NY bros 2 was on sale for the same price and it had that real vintage meyer tone ala Cannonball Adderley!
Oooh really? How much was it?
@@Saxologic Originally 275, I got it for 200. Its one of the cheapest Theo Wanne sells, but damn does it play consistently
I like the Godwin Louis mouthpiece sound the best! :)
Im pretty pleasantly surprised by their sound! I assumed that the uneven surface where the reed contacts the mouthpiece would have a noticeable, negative influence. I suppose that the actual quality/smoothness has a lesser impact than geometry, to a significant degree.
Also, whats the background music? It's dope, and I want to listen to more of it.
It was the rest of the video I showed of Godwin Louis!
Is the Meyer a good upgrade for an intermediate player?
I could very much relate to part of this video. The story of the John Thomas mouthpiece and paying $60. I bought a Claude Lakey mouthpiece for my tenor for $60 from a band member. I’ve recently bought a Vandoren metal V16. Much happier!
When resonance matters, go with the Meyer.
syos is such a good company. great products great people working there. very good company indeed
That’s so cool !
Great video
Nice! It'll be interesting to find out how you feel about the pieces in a little while. The Eb workout is awesome! Did you make it up? I'm transcribing it. One day when you have time - like in retirement - I'd love you to talk us through the Bb fingerings you use in that exercise. Thanks!!!!!!!!
I made it up, yes. As far as Bb, I follow Otis Murphy’s rule - when you see a Bb, look at one note before it and one note after it. If one of them is a B/Cb, use the side fingering. If not, use bis.
@@Saxologic That's super helpful! Thanks!!
Take a shot whenever he says "Ohh that's so cool".
Beautiful 😍
Bro this is my type of asmr
Any place I can find the exercise you played to test the mouthpieces, or did you write it yourself?
Hi! Sound pretty good! Quick question which opening number are you using? Thanks for the answer and Greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷
7*
Do they come in black, what’s the price, could I use my ligature, let us know, how to get them. Thank you
Says stuff about ordering them in the description
Saxologic ur the best keep up the great work😄
Did you record these videos on your iPhone? The sound quality when you were playing was amazing and I’d love to be able to have the quality
Yep!
I knew that ending was too formal for you, there had to be some surprise
Haha you know me too well it seems. It will be tradition
Saxologic, great video as always man! What app did you use to record the sax on your phone. It sound nice and clear almost as if you used an actual microphone.
Thanks man. I used GarageBand!
@@Saxologic Thanks man, I really appreciate it!
wait how was the recording quality for the saxophone so good? you recorded on your phone?
12:17 honestly, that should be your outro from now on
Very nice man
Hey man, what reeds do you use in the Meyer?
What mouthpiece do you recommended for jazz and classical.
Oh how exciting!!!!!!
Great review. I had seen both of these and hearing you play them made me want em more. A future purchase.
Thank you good sir. See you tomorrow!
Hi, can I ask, are you using some aplication on recording it on mobilephone? If yes, please tell me.
Damn you sound so much better than me with my setup lmao (Meyer 7 and a 62 series)
Hey man you’re a master do not doubt yourself
That Godwin Louis mouthpiece looks silly but dope at the same time
IKR!
How about the ligatures, do they keep the reeds sufficiently in place?, isn't it shaky when tuning etc? Love the sound and colors though, great review :)
They keep it perfectly in place. Super easy to put on and the tuning was actually really good!
@@Saxologic thanks, good to know!
Dude, I have a question. How much does a mouthpiece matter when playing? Will upgrading mouthpiece significantly affect tone/sound/ease of playing? Been playing tenor for a few years at this point and deciding whether upgrading from my Yamaha 4C will be worth the investment... Thanks man!
Hey I’m not Saxlogic but a mouthpiece can make a world of a difference, your could have a cheap 250 dollar horn but if you have a good mouthpiece you could make it sound like a Selmer or Yamaha
What mouthpiece would you recommend for a bright alto sound, the NY Meyer 7, or is there something even spicier?
Try the Vandoren V16 that's what I have it projects far and is pretty dang bright.
Alright thanks Mr. Coltrane I’ll check it out
I need a new mouthpiece but I play more classical than jazz. Should I get a Syos. If not what should I get I currently have a seller AL3 and its days are coming to an end
Watching this makes me feel better about my SYOS, I'm scared that my Band director won't let me use it next year, because of its color but it's the sound that counts after all, right?
Unless the band director is a saxophone professor, then he really doesn’t have a say. It’s also YOUR mouthpiece. If it gives you the sound and comfort you want then don’t settle for anything else.
@Nicholas C. Yeah, I completely agree. I don't know what my new band director plays, because I’m going into my first year of highschool, but I'm happy to hear a second opinion.
Duet Chops don’t worry about it bro. You’ll be straight use your mouthpiece
AbsorbingRed thank you bro. 🙏
Anthony Giordano Hahahaha If he does I will tell him that it gives me a good tone and the price isn’t that cheap to get another one, he’s a little strict so I’ve got to be careful. Haha but thank you.
How do you so easily from high g to b? My fingerings chain together very badly?
What recording program/setup equipment are you using? Surely not iphone voice memos, right?
I’m using a voice mic attachment to my normal iPhone camera
This is literally asmr
I've actually been wondering about mouthpieces for a long time, I'm still playing with the crappy one that was with my sax by default, in what ways does a better mouthpiece affect your playing?
Changes your sound more than any other material
@@Saxologic thank you for the advice. I'll probably invest in a better one soon.
I have a syos alto mouthpiece and I love it
They are neat!
Have you ever tried any of the classical Syos mouthpieces? I’m curious on how they sound.
I have not!
How can I sound brighter without changing the mouthpiece? Is there an exercise or technique I can practice to achieve brighter sound ?
Maybe try different reed brands/thinner reeds.
I'm a true master of reading. Hope you'll read another book. The Steve Kortyka produced my favorite sound out of the 4 you played.
Have you tried any of the Theo Wanne mouthpieces?
Haha reading master! And me too tbh! No, I haven’t. How are they?
3:20 how do I find the full recording
Which mouthpiece can you recommend if you want a soft jazzy sound?
Probably the Godwin Louis
@@Saxologic thx don't know a lot about mouthpieces and such have been playing for 6 years though😅
I liked the last two best. They always have struck me as looking kinda different. They should make them except in a more standard color.
If I ruled the world.
They do you can get them in black
Love your playing and your insights. I really want to like these mouthpieces but they always sound kind of cheap to me... looks aside
Saxologic ASMR channel now??👀😌
I been playing on a Yamaha 4c alto mouthpiece for so long now for budget reasons and been looking to finally upgrade, would this be a good mouthpiece to upgrade to?
Yeah! Or the Meyer 7M NY. Can’t go wrong with that
Get a Meyer. I upgraded to a Ddarrio Select Jazz from the 4c and it works well for me. A LOT easier to play.
you think youll fully switch to one of the SYOS or stick with the meyer?
Tbh I think I’ll stick with Meyer, but there are more brands I wanna try
i love france too :)
Great video but curious if you bought these or they sent them to you for review?
They sent them to me to test them out
You would have a very successful asmr career
I don't play sax, I'm just here because this man is comical and hilarious...
Appreciate that!
What is a jazz mouthpiece below $100? There are so many such as Meyer and Ottolink I don’t know which should give me the best tone
Can’t go wrong with Meyer 5-7M. But you would be better off purchasing a quality mouthpiece rather than a cheap one!
Saxologic my dream mouthpiece is the theo wanne fire, but since I’m a highschool student I don’t have the necessary funds to buy the gear I want. Would the Meyer supply me with the power I need for 1st alto in jazz band?
Marker you do not want a Theo Wanne fire if your just playing normal jazz. If you want to play in a funk band, then maybe, but they are SO bright. Go with either the meyer NY 6m (or 7m), or a Vandoren v16 A6, you won’t regret it.
You probably have covered this already, so sorry for my ignorance, but what is the name of your harness?
Jazz Sax Lab
What did you think of the Meyer g series?
Not a fan!
Another vote for the Steve one. By a scootch over the Meyer.
Hello Man, can i ask you two "outside" questions?
1) what fingering do you use for the altissimo?
2) how you wrote that workout?
Sorry for the offtopic and i also play meyer, also like them better :)
Question 1:
G: LH - OK, Fork. RH - 1, Side Bb
A: LH - OK, 2, 3.
Bb: LH - OK, 3.
Question 2:
I just wrote it based off my weaknesses in that key.
@@Saxologic Can i steal it? I'm practicing blues in all keys after i' ve seen Oatts and Pollack, i'm also transcribing Oats playing the bird blues in all keys. By the way thanks for the tips and i wish you the best for your channel. Thanks for your time.
Did you write that exercise out? Sounds nice.
Yes!
I’d buy a pdf if you’re set up to do so.
Saxologic yeah is it available on PDF? :)
he has a book of exercises I think
I wish it wasn’t too late for me to get this good
The unintentional asmr
This video will decide if I buy one. Haven't watched yet
Are you buying one?
@@evandempsey7613 yeah lol. Not one of these models but yes. I should've came back and said so 😅
@@snadwich9352 I hope it's treating you well. I was thinking about getting one but I decided to go cheaper and get a Vandoren Jumbo Java instead. I'm very happy with that choice, gave me the power and brightness I was looking for.
@@evandempsey7613 I'll let you know when I get it. Ive played a couple Vandoren mouthpieces and I loved all of them. Unfortunately I was playing them for examples and I wasn't able to keep them
@@snadwich9352 did you end up liking it?
It's a vintage ny meyer ir or a meyer ny 100 anniversary?
Not the vintage. Too expensive haha and rare
Are those exercises from a book or did you write them? They seem great, if you did write them you should do a video on them!
I wrote it out myself. Ok maybe I can make a few more and put them out there
@@Saxologic that would be logical.
Steve Kortyka one was the best to my ears but I don't play saxophone, plus vive la France mon gars 😂
