Yeah, Jay!! You’re sounding awesome on all these pieces. Thanks for playing my piece and you sound great on the Approach Notes Etude!
that's one of the ones I asked them to send me. It's definitely cool to be able to play an exact copy of a mouthpiece played by someone you listen to all the time. (almost exact since I got a 7*) Need to go through the rest of those etudes!
Better Sax thanks, Jay!! That means a lot coming from you!
You two are amazing influences! Trying your incredible lessons during free time @chad LB
@@bettersax and @Chad LB I'd like to get the Chad LB but thinking the 8* tip opening might require too much air. How does it work with the 7* or 7 (or smaller) tip opening? I know that some step baffles have problems with the smaller tip openings. Thanks for your feedback!
@@bettersax good
I appreciate how he went to 6.9 on power on 4.2 on brightness when designing his mouthpiece.

Great review! Thanks for including my mouthpiece. Everyone expects mine to be just a screamer but I love those soft/fuzzy softs too. Before this Syos I had to choose between the two, now I've got it all in one.
Thanks Scott. Yours was definitely a surprise when I played it. Was expecting something else. Nice mouthpiece.
Always refreshing watching your reviews! Thanks so much!
Thanks for the review! I was interested in how these mouthpieces performed and you didn't disappoint with a rigorous testing. Most surprising was the difference in the Tenor Mouthpieces. That Chad LB7 to the Scott Paddock models was miles apart from each other! Thanks again!
I love my Syos mouthpiece, I custom made mine in early 2018 and they were super easy to work with and it is exactly what I wanted. Mine is a Baritone 10 tip opening that is sort of modeled after the child of a berg Larson and theo wanne.
I currently am playing the SYOS Chad LB model on my tenor and I really like it! I was playing on an 8*metal Link for about 20 years and the SYOS is an improvement all the way around!
Love the fact that you were willing to state that you were biased... Thereafter, you removed those biases and gave a great review. Well done!!!
I have a full custom Syos alto. I went nuts with the brightness and power sliders and it's a TON of fun to play.
I’m a new🎷 player. I’ve been watching your vids since May 2020 and have learned so much in the short time I’ve been playing. I’m a novice but always loved the 🎷. Eventually I’ll get a new mouthpiece and SYOS will be my next mouthpiece!
I stumbled across your beginning training videos and you make me so excited to learn to play THANK YOU
Sounds great on all 3, can't even tell the difference .... Plus love listening to you play, Jay !
All these sound superb Jay!!! I’ve been looking for one for an alto and this video helps soo much
I got a Tivon Pennicott model a few months ago, and it was a game changer for my sound, switching from a Otto Link STM
Jay, very excellent review. Thank you for being so upfront and unbiased. Would welcome a review of Syos soprano sax mpcs.
I use a Knoll Scott signature baritone mouthpiece with legere signatures and a vandoren m/o ligature. love the sound and definitely a bang for your buck!
These are great comparisons! Each MP is subtle in its own way. I needed a versatile MP for my alto. After much listening and comparing, I just purchased the Knoel Scott Alto7. Merci Beaucoup!
Yes! I have the Chad LB. I did end up taking some 3800 grit micro mesh and leveled the table to help the reed seal better. It is a Great mouthpiece!! It plays super easy!
Just received my SYOS this past weekend and I've been working on it every day. It's darker than my Meyer G 7* and I like how it responds, nice and free...
Hi Jay took your advice on beginners mouthpiece Yamaha 4c only been learning 4months wish I had bought this then. Fantastic difference thanks again 👍 Andy
I’ve used the Chad LB tenor model and it was really fun and great to use! Definitely worth the price tag
Maybe it's my preference, but man that bright, green mouthpiece is just killer. I love the brighter, more powerful sound. Thinking about getting a syos for clarinet
I would just like to add these words of wisdom:
Steal a man's wallet and he will be poor for a week;
Teach him to play music and buy instruments and he will be poor for a lifetime.
so true
I've been playing the Dayna Stephens model with a N0. 9 (3.05mm) tip opening since March 2019 and I love it. I spend a lot of time on long notes and overtones so the larger opening is not a bother and I play No.2 reeds. For me this works well. I tried the SYOS cushions but they did not last too long, B&G clear cushions work well. The ligature is great and really no fuss to use. It also doubles as a groovy MP stand on my desk. Thanks, as always, for your generosity and passion to share your knowledge Jay.
Awesome vid as usual Jay, you sound great on all of them. Appreciate the depth and clarity of your videos in general. I was rather annoyed by all the attention I received when I started playing one from their first batch in 2017, but the ability to personalize the feel and sound made it well worth it. I hear you on the give and take of rubber/metal vs plastic, I tend to see it as another option vs better or worse. I tend to switch a lot and like the freshness of revisiting all of my pieces for a few gigs/recordings and the SYOS are always in the rotation for all four horns. Has anyone else found that newer reeds play a bigger part in the quality of the sound with SYOS than it does on rubber and metal pieces?
I play a SYOS. I have a few of them for my tenor and Bari. I love them all. The one that is gold in my eyes, is a custom one they made for me. It really blew my mind that they made a mouthpiece that was exactly what I wanted.
I asked for a mouthpiece with a tip opening equivalent to my Otto Link...they hit it perfectly. I love a breathy sound for a ballad tune...however, for bebop, something warm but very responsive. They did it for me, first time. I am amazed that I did not need to return it, without a thing needing done. I’m so content with it, and really worth every penny in my eye.
Thanks for the review on this video, you’re gonna help a lot of people who may wonder about these fantastic pieces.
Sounds beautiful Jay! Thanks for playing my model.
Thank you Godwin!
I love my Chad LB syos mouthpiece. I need something that I can use for awhile. Awesome piece. Awesome video👍
Thank you!!
I ordered one for Alto and one for Tenor a couple of months ago. I customized both of them according to my tastes. I did not immediately make either my main piece. However, over time, through many random mouthpiece gladiator battles, Syos has emerged victorious! That was actually surprising to me because my mouthpiece battles are very randomized and objective. It takes time...a lot of time. Be patient and make your own choices. They worked with me via email, extensively and repetitively communicated. I also gave them artistic freedom to make the very best piece they could and...they went OFF! I also got customized engravings on each piece that are uniquely beautiful. Thank you Syos!!
I have the Chad LB for my tenor and absolutely love it! This past weekend I tried it versus my old MPs, and it blew them out of the water. I want to get one for my alto sometime soon.
Thanks man!! Glad you dig it :)
Thanks for the video, Jay! Always great to see such thorough reviews/play tests. I'm currently working with SYOS to develop their first Classical Mouthpiece and I've been having a blast. Pauline and the whole crew have always been so easy to work with. Looking forward to more of your videos!
nice good luck with that project.
Strongly considering buying your classical mouthpiece you sound great on it
@@itisnottaken4444 thanks, Will! That's very kind of you! Please let me know if you end up getting one ✌
Great video as always !!!
Hey, I took your PSBE course and it done wonders to my playing, thanks a lot, love your teaching. 👍😁
Great to hear!
Another great video Jay. Thanks for taking the time to give them a second try and sharing it with us. I have not had the privilege to try one yet. Given the step baffles on the Chad LB and Scott Paddock pieces, I was surprised to hear such a luscious dark low end on the ballads. Could that be due to your expert playing ability to make essentially any mouthpiece sound great? I am coming from an Otto Link STM. I am looking for more projection and a bit more edge without losing the ability to sing on the ballads like you did.
Been playing florida link and other pieces.. Bought SYOS about 2 weeks ago in the summer sale ..
Think they are excellent and a great price
Hello Jay, I have some Syos mouthpieces. They sound great. The table and the rails are perfect: table flat and rails symmetric. But you have the texture and no seal. I put a fine sandpaper on a flat underground and very carefully give it a few strokes(4 or 5) . result: seal and pop! And they play even better. 5 minutes work only!
I'm a believer. I purchased the Tivon Pennicott and the Scott Paddock. Although I'm just at the beginning of the intermediate stage, I really noticed the difference. The Tivon Pennicott plays a good mellow blues sound while my Scott Paddock plays a good aggressive Chuck Rio Tequila. I just ordered a Dan Forshaw for another comparison.
you sound really good on the Godwin Lewis on the alto.
Chad LB on tenor.
Seems you match the middle-high of their spectrum pretty well.
(to my ears obviously)
A couple of weeks ago I purchased a custom one on online and had it shipped from France to Asia. Shipping was quick, had to pay custom duty.
I thought I was taking a risk. However, to my surprise it sounded great, exactly as I had envisioned it, even when failing the pop test. I actually send an email asking if it is supposed to be that way.
Hey Jay, great review. I have discovered that I do actually get a really good seal on my several SYOS mpc's, when the mpc is on the neck and I seal off the neck. And that is with a 9*. But the mpc does not seal or pop with just the mpc alone. I expect it is because the end of the mpc is not machined flat, which has no impact.
I play one on alto and soprano! I love them both!
Great content as always! Cheers!
On Alto, I really like the Godwin Louis. Not sure about Tenor, although they all sounded different!
Using a Mornington Lockett for my alto and Chad LB for my tenor! Love them both! 😁
Thanks, Albert!!
I myself play the Carlos Eiene tenor mouthpiece and have found it is my second favorite tenor mouthpiece I have played (after a theo wanne I cant afford) However I had to send it back at first and get a second one as the table was so rough it was unplayable.
I also ordered a custom piece for my bass clarinet that hopefully will be as good as my tenor piece.
No way, this is the giveaway I have been waiting for
good luck
Been waiting for this video ever since you posted that picture on your Instagram. I play my own custom syos mouthpiece that is a 7 on brightness, and a 7.5 on projection, with a step baffle, a 7* tip opening, and a medium large chamber
I have the Chad LB model for tenor. I find that I have to take more of it in my mouth but when I do it plays great. I used it for my gig last night.
Antiqua winds pro one, Fiberreed carbon medium. You sounded great on all of them.
I own Lorenzo's mouthpiece that I play on my P. Muriat tenor sax. I love it, as it absolutley gives, gives me the sound I have always wanted! Prior to this, My favorie was the Meyer 5* with an H frame ligature, recommended by Scott Paddock himself! I enjoy playing that mouthipiece too but the SYOS mouthpiece is a clear winner. Everyone who is accustomed to my playing has remarked how much fuller, rounder and richer I now sound.
I definitely would love to have one for my alto sax as well. Whereas I was leaning towards Lorenzo's signature mouthpiece again, I think, like the sound of Godwin's too and would be happy to give it a try.
I did not have a hang up about getting my mouthpiece in a bag. it was a cool difference to a box and it is very durable so, I'm confident it was pacakged suitably. I did have an issue, like you, with the table. it was not smooth enough and so I took the chance and lighlty polished it with some very fine emery paper and that fixed that issue instanty!
Nice video Jay! I always appreciate the content you put out.
Also the ridges on the inside is supposed to act as an air curtain and give it a more lush and sweet subtone. Mine doesn't have it though so I wouldn't know how much of a difference it makes
I would love to try out one of these mouthpieces they look really cool and they seem hip
I like the sound of that yellow Tevon Pennicott 7
Sounds great!
As Chad said, you sound awesome on all of them. I was impress by Chad demo on SYOSI think I would like to try one or better, own one. Hope luck will be with me! Salut et merci.
A while ago, I was invited to play tenor with a small group and singer primarily doing easy listening jazz numbers. My current mouthpieces were a Berg Larson 110-2, ponzol vintage ss 105, otto link tonemaster 9. All far too dominating for such a style. I was listening to Chad LB and heard him play wonderfully at lower volumes without losing intonation or tone quality, so I picked up the Chad LB Syos with an 8* opening, and I could not be happier. I love the tone I get (and others too!) , and the control is exceptional. It's now my standard mouthpiece I use in the bigband, funk band, and latin band as well. I'm curious how well the plastic will hold up over time.
Great vid, was hoping for the Daro Bahroozi mouthpiece as well
I purchased a 3d printer lately, and remembered this video. I went to thingiverse and searched for an alto mouthpiece. After printing and sanding the table flat, i was really gladly surprised. It actually worked, and was better compared to my cheap plastic one that came with the horn. That was a cheap upgrade :)
Sorry for replying a year after you commented but I was wondering which mouthpiece you printed out? I play tenor and I still use my stock mouthpiece and I don’t want to make the jump towards buying a new one. I was wondering if you could link the mouthpiece you printed or give some additional info, thanks a lot!
Thank you so for that I really like the Tivon on Tenor
Hi Jay, influenced by Chad LB, I ordered a custom piece for my vintage Selmer 1930 bari -this horn is resistant to my modern bari Link and Meyer pieces, but worked with a very old. Huge chambered metal Link, that was only a 4 tip and too close. I suggested a cross between the old link and a modern 5 tip and after a rebuild to increase the shank (for tuning) it works great, more power, better tuning, and golf read harmonics!
Not golf read but “ great harmonics!”
Wowww!!!Great!!!Amazing sound!!
The Scott Paddock piece is amazing. I have the exact model you tested (from Kpoudavoff), It did wonders for my playing (:
Definitely the Chad LB 7* sounds really good I admit. But most 3D printer plastics are pretty soft. I wonder how durable they'd be over time compared to a cast resin Ottolink. I'd still order black, I'm oldschool. I do my tables on a double sided japanese whetstone. 240/1000 like glass.
In 2022, my Syos Smoky alto mouthpiece is showing significant bite marks after only about 200 hours of playing. I don't like to use mouthpiece cushions.
But I do get the dark sound that I like, over the full range of my Selmer Paris Series ii. Setup: a Rovner 1RL ligature and Rigotti Gold 3 Medium reed.
Don't like the Syos ligature or cap. The ligature can't be adjusted up or down on the reed; the cap falls off frequently and is hard to find.
What they consider to be 2.8 out of 10, in terms of brightness, was to my ears bright as hell!! Like Dave Sanborn bright!
Thanks Jaye for your video on the smart piece of plastic don't hard rubber sound and feel better? I suspect in two years time there might not be so many people playing. Them?
I told Syos I wanted to sound like a Brilhart Ebolin alto and tenor mouthpiece rolled into one tenor mouthpiece (basically to sound like a mix between Maceo Parker and Gene Ammons), and boy did the deliver. The first try too! I still have mine two years later and love it! And it’s coral pink, so it makes practicing less intimidating, less dark and foreboding and self serious as a black hard rubber mouthpiece. Just a small thing that makes a huge difference for me personally!
Very interesting. I could hear the difference just on the sound while usually it is much more the player who feels the difference in terms of how the mpc responds. I find the CLB mpc really attractive. You sound similar to him on your samples.
thanks Marc
Jay, they all sounded great. I prefer the darker sounding ones. I hope I win. If not I definitely look at getting one. Great vid thanks 👍🏻
I'd really love one of these guys. I don't really have a reason like "Mine is broken and I can't afford it". My current mouthpiece is just really old and I could use a new one.
I was waiting for this review lets go
I love how the yellow mouthpiece disappears on the shelf behind you and reappears in your hand at about 0:50! Neat trick 😉
What!? No Jay Metcalf
Great eye! Had you not made this comment, I wouldn't have noticed.
i'm sorry, but it dissappeared because he picked it up and started using it. correct me if i'm wrong jay, but i don't think that was intentional. it was cool though
Change in the Matrix...
Miraculous yellow mouthpiece☺ Do the other colours come with this option too?
The mornington sounds good for me. I play on a berg Larsen metro alto mouthpiece
Great video , I will say something that stuck out and I instantly noticed was when you played the Chad LB mouthpiece, it instantly sounded like his tone and his sound. Very interesting.
Love your gear Reviews…
In regards to your original opinion, are the new mouthpieces' tables flat and how well do they seal? Thanks for another honest review including your first experience with the products.
I think i saw something like this at a Midwest Clinic booth in 2019, I didn't get to play one, but I can tell the difference in brightness between the models. Interesting to see if 3D printed Mouthpieces will be more standardized in years to come.
I have the scott Paddock #8 mouthpiece, and its a monster sound, i love the sound and power
😁
Interesting presentation. While I'm happy with my current pieces, and have lots of work to do before a new mouthpiece will "make me", I did "borrow" your demonstrations with My One And Only Love to learn your tasty embellishments and turn-around phrases. This video was worth watching if for no other reason!
Yes, they all sound good. Preferred the CLB. (if had to pick)..
them mouthpiece be looking fine n aesthetics😍😍😍
Superb testing Jay. Very objective. Love your work -thank you. Your playing is immense. Not sure about the mouthpieces. I still prefer my metal.
They really sound very nice. There are some that sound more clear in the low notes. They are great. I get a better sound from rubber mouthpiece that metal ones. It might be my embuchare needs to adjust to it.
great vid Jay!
thanks
I've actually talked to Pauline from SYOS about those ridges and my understanding is that they add resistance
I like them! #2 best.
All good!
I love your videos!! Keep it up
Thank you! Will do!
I've been using an absolute hooligan of a mouthpiece, I wonder what it's like to chill ,legato . After years of hard and fast , I want smooth and slow.
Hi jay I love your videos and lm a saxophonist myself thank you for making me have a future that I always wanted
With your amazing playing skills you sound good on all these mouthpieces 😃👍, but my favorites here are the Godwin Louis, Mornington Lockett and on the Tenor definitely the Chad LB. I agree with you that a hard rubber mouthpiece of the same shapes would sound better, as I have experimented with designing and printing a mouthpiece. Pro for these commercial 3D mouthpieces is that you have almost unlimited shapes and combinations to choose from and form your tone (and some of the colors do look actually nice, like the dark blue you selected), con it looses a bit in sound because of the material (and maybe tolerances like on the table) and definitely is not cheap. And a printed legature..nono..better to use a regular one ;).
I was surprised when I see Chad LB uses it and his sound is amazing
Thank you!!
Chad reminds me of a modern day Coltrane and Micheal Brecker. He is a prodigy and freak that will bring jazz saxophone to new heights.
Pat G thank you, Pat! That means a lot to me!
I just got a Phil Tone intrepid and will be putting that to the test here soon. I am in the market for a nice metal piece but may have to try one of these.
I love that mouthpiece. One of my all time favorites.
Thanks for the review, agree sound all great. I can imagine some people would like to swap and change depending on what song is being played, much like synth keyboard players swap their tones around. So has anyone spent the dollars on a 3D printer instead and roll their own, surely there must be a whole host of experimenters out there. I make my own hand carved Shakuhachi and the mouth piece design is an important part of the sound, great to experiment.
Love to try one. Cheers C
The tenor mouthpieces sound fantastic. All of them.
I see Lucky Chops using these all the time, and they have a wild sound! I play alto and only have used Selmer C or Jody Jazz... looking for a brighter sound!
Cannot wait to hear your thoughts
Hi Jay. I have just bought a Cohn Pan American tenor off ebay and was wondering what mouthpiece to use as I normally play alto. I think I will go with your advice and stick with Meyer 7M ebonite for now. I've not been in touch because of complaints from neighbours about my practising. I've bought a Sax Mute 1 which I hope will solve the problem. Hope to speak soon.
I have been really interested in these. Been seeing a bunch of people using them recently.
I really need a new mouthpiece, and these look cool.
Wow amazing
My friend saxologic uses these mouthpieces and I always wanted one.
If you're wondering about the little lines at the beginning of the chamber, I'm not 100% sure about what exactly they do, but I can make a guess. I know Theo Wanne recently started making classical alto sax mouthpieces that have these little "gills" all along the baffle. I think this either adds resistance or focuses the air more.
After visiting their website, one thing I definitely recommend is allowing the buyer to see what their mouthpiece looks like before they buy it. For example, I'm assuming turning the "power" and brightness up will give me a high baffle, small chamber, and turning up the darkness would give me a lower baffle and larger chamber. It'd be cool if I could maybe have a diagram of what my mouthpiece would look like as I adjust its settings.
