Today on The Skid Factory we take a look at this 1998 GU Nissan Patrol which is powered by a 6.6l Duramax Turbo Diesel V8 Engine.
Al originally owned the car and converted it from the standard TB45 Petrol straight six to the GM LMM Duramax V8 and Allison 6 speed transmission many years ago. The car is back in the workshop to sort out a transmission problem so Al takes some time to show you how he did the conversion, what he liked and didn't like about it, and then taking it for a drive.

What's it like on fuel
Hearing Al talk about the conversion sounds like "I could have done something easier and maybe more sensible. But where is the fun in that."
its amazing seeing the progression in Al's work from something that looks like a very well done conversion like this to the work they're doing now. Especially considering how honest Al is about it all.
good work lads
A real craftsman knows his crimes.
Best spin off out of the MCM characters and a better show in my opinion. More enjoyable than Moog yelling for 20 minutes.
Illegal!
@webnothing couldn't agree more
That channel die for me around 2 years ago.
Who cares? Just enjoy the show.
Do they even still modify cars? They only seem to do stupid challenges these days...
Getting a Duramax running in our 64 C10 right now cause of the challenge but Cummins is still a better (cheaper) option. The weight savings is great but at least a 12v still sounds like Big Foot farting in the woods
Cummins aren't very cheap in aus/NZ tho
yes only in Ontario would they love the sound of bigfoot farting in the woods , second only to marrying their sisters , the cheaper option ......🤣
Throw a td42 in your c100 deboss! You and zip ties would love that motor
Dam...fancy seeing you guys comment
Love your channel too 🤙
@@ReubenHorner compared to a built td42ti or Toyota engine they are cheaper and far more potential
That thing sounds like it RIPS!
Love that Al doesn’t cut it any slack either.
I think it speaks loads about al that he can look at something that has and does perform like it should and talk about how he could have done better. Shows he's still learning like everyone should and is humble. Great shows guys. I always look forward to new videos. Keep it up.
Al his own toughest critic. Amazing work completed. Don't be so tough on yourself bro.
I have a FJ40, and I kept the axle on the stock side (which meant a custom axle) - many didn't understand why I was so insistent about maintaining the stock position, your explanation is going to be my go-to-video to help when my patience wears thin trying to explain it....
That thing Boogies !
Woody had a good clench goin on.....
This conversion is the reason I bought my GU. Thanks for going into so much detail about all the little quirks & things that will catch you out with the swap. Have bought some parts from Heath @ PID as he seems to be the most reliable when it comes to delivering the goods!
6bt patrol build series WE NEED IT Lol
say no more
Extra brownie points for the use of "hysteresis"
Oh lots of brownie points for that, makes him a dead proper engineer now in my book
@@VivCollins Hysteresis is such an important concept that is found in many systems, both biological ans mechanical.
Daaaaamn! This thing must be Alllllmost as quick as my ZD30!
Is it weird that I read that in your voice? Haha
@@boostbogan haha naaaaah I did write it in my voice in my head so...seems legit to me!
😂 Baiting
You know a mechanic is a great metaphor for a problem solver. You simply believe a thing can be done, get into it, and start tackling the problems you find one at a time, making it work, inventing parts, modifying parts to fit, until you've accomplished their functions. And I think I can, becomes I did it, becomes empowerment over the helplessness, the cries, and complaints that trouble us.
I felt no pain at all with my build ! much thanks to PID Diesel.. best thing I have ever done, perpetual smiles when driving..
how much guy?
20:27 haha when Al says ‘ I wonder how it would go compared to a Cummins powered patrol ‘ .. haha and what are you building right now Al 😋😜
“Spins a lot of gears” 😂😂😂😂 well done guys! I think it’s great seeing the progression of your fab skills. Imo that duramax swap does look great but we all know the second time you do something is always better
Was that 4th?
Very interesting, guys, but I'm glad I went my way - 200RWKW TD42T. Cost me $10K to get a good pump, turbo and IC, did all the fitting myself and it just turned over 300000kms. Bog reliable and gets better (ok, less worse) fuel mileage than standard. Doesn't go like that monster, though - I'd love the tranny in mine :-) Love your work, always look forward to a new episode.
Fantastic in depth explanation, could listen to Al speak all day awesome knowledge.
I have done engine conversions . It takes time , it’s to spend 3 or 4 hours just to get one engine mount right . Then there’s heater hose routing, intake ducting , and a million other things . Most workshops are going to charge a grand a day, so the more you can do yourself, the better.
So, at 18:53 I was worried that The Skid Factory wouldn't deliver...
...then came 18:55!
Thanks Al!!!
-100
Love the diesel content- and The aforementioned upcoming project
Surely with having to move so much stuff for the shaft would just be easier to redo the diff housing with the diff on the left? Al has the skills
After the last few weeks of episodes in the US, it feels strangely comfy to be back in the shed.
Love it still has the 4500 stickers on the side .. full sleeper lol. Loved when al took off from the give way damn it fkn moves haha
Nice to see the Idaho license plate! I think 1B is Bannock County. Cool seeing other fans from my state enjoying quality videos from the other side of the world!
looks like a good rig. Big smiles when you put the foot down.
I kept hearing about this here and there from Alan in the older videos glad to see this.
Worked at Mark's for a few months and got to drive their patrol both on portals and off and it's a beast.
Yes about $50k point the road is about right including engine.
What was even better than the patrol was their 105 Landcruiser with the Duramax and 6l80e conversion.
That cost MANY moneys to build but wow does it drive good.
I prefer the old na 6.5 chev for sound with turbo wakes them up pretty well to but the Duramax makes them a real hotrod.
"Everyone likes to imagine that they are driving a train!" So true!!
Al you have go man...we believe in you.
I love the look on Woody's face when Turbo Yoda nails the go pedal, that thing really hauls ass.
This thing is pretty awesome.. Can't wait to see how the cummins one turns out.
Haha that's gold! Would have to be the first time I've seen Woody make a face like that. When Woody starts looking for the "HOLY SHIT" handle you know its quick. Now The Skid Factory is about to be flooded with Patrol builds!!
As long as they bring a very fat wallet with them
Here in portugal the moast popular sawp now in the patrol is the engine from BMW 530/535d and works great!
Congratilations im a big fan of the chanel.
Cummins patrol is definitely the truck feel and sound your mentioned at the start. Definitely more potential and easier to get in the patrol. I offered to bring mine in when I was passing through about 6 months ago but I couldn't hang around to get an answer. Duramax is sweet but cummins for the win is my opinion.
I love the IM AL Virginia plate in the background.
big call from denmark hav bin following your channel for about a year, you make the coolest cars, and as a patrol nott about 15 years and no plans to quit, in dk we unfortunately have a lot of stuppet rules that make life difficult for us who build cars have a y60 2.8td which is the standard in dk 4.2 is rare also in gasoline vasion, goes after approx 180-200 hp 2.8 with 2860 turbo 12mm pump 2.5 "feeder hoses 3" intorcooler 3 "inlet for the turbo 3 "v band exhaust, panning a rb25det if i can get the papers in order
Bring on the next duramax build guy's that would be a great watch. Be good to hear what you wanted to change and explain the differences. Great work love the show keep em coming 👍
21:40
Gee Woody's words crack me up at times 😂 Funny guy. Be great value to be around 👍👍
Yes boys, every episode needs a skid!!
Please do the build you're talking about Al, we'd love to see it! Keep it up guys.
great ep lads, skid factory vid is always my favourite part of the week
Thanks for adding this information vid mate...I'm an Aussie living Thailand and about to drop a LBZ/ Allison into my PZJ75 chassis with Hilux body..some good insight there cheers
A big Donk is always impressive under the hood!
great epp and you have cured me of ever wanting one of them like that !!
Yoos buggers did it again. Left a little nugget AFTER the credits. I caught this one but I bet I've missed heaps because I'm too keen to get onto the next vid.
LOVE your crap guys. Keep up the STELLAR work.
loved that Al had to show off to the 79 series haha
85k fully financed!
Best skid factory so far haha
Bit hard on yourself yoda looks like a great job drives well .will be good to see another one built
You did great Al! That is super cool build. But as mechanics I totally understand it can always be better.
Sweet conversion. Time to start a new duramax build mate would love to see it
LOL @ Woody grabbin the Jesus handle. The way that thing took off to begin with. Bloody hell.
That Idaho plate tho 💕💕
Awesome build! I would love to see a version 2.0
Drives it like a boss
All hail to the techwiz Al,, aka TurboYoda 🙏 such a bliss just listening to him explain his wizardness,,, 😋👍
You can also get the alternators from diesels in 4wds and light trucks that have the vacuum pump on the back of them
This video makes me appreciate my LBZ Silverado more.
Love the video guys, Allan you are chilled out man, thanks for your wisdom in a such a difficult task that many would like to undertake. I am looking at an LBZ at the moment too......lol.
YES PLEASE, ABOUT BLOODY TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Need more builds like this!!!
As an American it’s really cool to see someone on the other side of the world messing with the same engines we do. The later duramax’s are all pretty good engines, even better when all of the emissions crap is gone
If you're looking for future projects, not sure how different the Mondeo you get is to the us Fusion, but I recently saw a hoonigan video, guy swapped a full mustang driveline into a Fusion ( both current generation).
The rear subframe/suspension literally bolted right up, and the front subframe bolts were within 1/2 inch of bolting up. Just had to make a tunnel for the trans and driveshaft.
But it's a nearly bolt up conversion to make a 4 door mustang....
It's not a falcon...but...
That Idaho plate is from my home town, 1B is Bannock county.
Ryan Duvall I live in Aus now but from Boise, I got excited seeing that plate!
Grew up in Melbourne and lived in Idaho Falls (8B) for 10 years!
I was born and raised in Idaho Falls, and still live here.
Who Run Bartertown? Sweet, it’s a beautiful area. Always loved going to Kelly Canyon. I’m in Heber City, UT now.
Alex S Haha Kelly Canyon is actually the location where I had my first broken wrist, concussion, and kiss, all on the same trip. That 7th grade ski club outing was one to remember (albeit foggily due to the concussion).
Sick rig and build gents.
At first I thought Al said it skips a lot of gears, then I noticed the tyre smoke out the back window, ooo skids a lot of gears!
Neat looking set up but can't wait for the builds to start up again
cheers al and woody for another epic vid we are always learning with you guys👍 yoda vids are #1
Beautiful work !
175k AU for Silverado wow !
knew a bloke who put an older chev 6.5 turbo diesel into his gu patrol for towing a massive caravan, got better towing mileage than the old engine
That thing sounds wicked Mallee.
How did I miss this video!
So much time for Al.
I love Nissan and GM ( in that order) so really dig the swap
Yes please
Keep up the amazing work and videos skid dude's. Can't wait for the new content.
19:46 that 79 wish it was that good
HEY! That Idaho L Plate is from my neck of the woods!! Cool!!!!
Nice mate. Im In Idaho.
What a beast of a Patrol that Allison box really seems to get it moving. Should drag race the Daihatsu in it or the V12 Cruiser.
Bro relax guy the look on woody face priceless👍🏼🍺
Dat turbo sound tho😍😍😍😍
I can see why your mate bought that vehicle it's an absolute weapon..!! 😯😯😯
After hearing about it vaguely in other videos (esp the TD42 Patrol series, as I recall) for years, great to finally see the Duramax Patrol.
Maybe an obvious answer to this one, but: Would changing the front axle setup so the center member was on the passenger side mitigate some of these issues?
I can imagine lots of reasons why not, but if the transfer case and front driveshaft led to so many changes, I could also imagine it being the same or less work on balance.
Rear diff is offset to the side too from memory.
Or maybe just 4 years on working on 70 series landcruisers is clouding my memory.
dchil15 from memory the rear of patrols is in the center, or close enough that it isn’t noticeable.
Good idea, but I suspect it'd be even more of a mission than the standard configuration. You'd need a custom front axle, and the transfer case front output would somehow have to stick out into the passenger side (Australian cars-wise) rather than the driver's side.
Al I have a GU you can improve the engineering side on. I also have some ideas to make it easier and neater
If you are not needing long range for remote touring, a big petrol v8 makes sense.. My GU has a turbo/intercooled TD42 auto, which has been more trouble than it's worth. If i were to do a build I'd use a LS3 with an 8 speed crate setup. Maybe even the new GM series motor if the prove reliable. Heck of a lot cheaper than a V8 diesel LC or v8 petrol patrol.
thank you for detail video on diesel power Nissan
Watching how quick those trees accelerated in the back ground made me happy, big diesel and an allison trans in a sub 2 tonne rig.....wild. I hate the allison trans in truck trucks like prime movers and rigids but they could be fun in a 4x4 😂😂 and that looks wild
Also....after the credits 😂😂😂😂🤙🤙🤙⛟⛟⛟💨💨💨💨💨
If by 'sub 2 tonne' you mean 'nearly 3'
Be interesting to see you tackle a GU conversion using a new Cummins factory repower crate engines. They come complete with wiring harness and computer..
If you're talking about the 2.8 litre engine you can get them second hand here for less than half the price of new out of a wrecked Foton Tunland.
Cummins are generally the loudest and Duramaxs are usually the quietest. Powerstrokes are pretty much dead in the middle soundwise. I have a personal 2018 Super Duty 6.7 Powerstroke and a 2019 GMC Duramax for work(I have to drive to large jobs sometimes through several states, so no wear and tear on my vehicle). The GMC almost makes zero noise, my truck let's you know it's a diesel but it's not droning along. I personally prefer the Powerstroke 6.7. It feels more torque-y and smoother under load. The Duramax almost feels like a gas engine in how it delivers power but the torque is still there.
Reminds me of the moon quote,
"We didn't go there because it was easy, we went there because it was hard"
I always thought it would be cool to swap a duramax in an old impala/ford galaxie so you'd have the old landyacht experience, but without the obsolete powertrain and dismal fuel efficiency
Wanna try one Al ? you won't have any trouble with the front axle on this one ! :)
Have you seen @CleetusMcFarland 's Cummins powered early 60s Galaxie?
WOW. Thats an awesome truck. Hope you getback ai it...
23:42 love the reeeeeeee from the turbo
total legends!
"Skids a lot of gears"....... LOL
That's the statement of all statements Al :)
Al , your a craftsman, and you have fun doing what your skilled at, woody learn everything you can off him , your lucky his taken you under his wing , both make a great team, Australian ingenuity at its best, but yoda we all could learn a thing or 7 off you,
Nice Idaho Plate you got there. I am From Idaho!!! =)
Love the patrol content. I've got a LSA and 6l80e in my gq Ute.💪💪👍
