- Over a year in the making... LokJaw roars to life. "I've never had an engine that responds like this," says Gale Banks with a smile from ear to ear. "High-compression big block Chevy with a blower. This guy is the champion." Here’s your chance to hear the first of our forthcoming series of high-performance diesel turnkey (crate) engines. The exhaust note from all modern diesel engines is dampened by a turbo. There is no turbo to reduce the sound from this engine. The exhaust exits the engine through a set of custom headers, into a collector, and out to the world via twin Banks 5” Monster Exhausts. After Banks calibrator Jeff Lee tunes the engine, we'll be hitting the road. Subscribe so you don't miss any tire smoke.

Amazing, Gale Banks is about my age, when so many are slipping into retirement, he is still right on top of his game, Fantastic.
That's why I recommend people have a hobby they are passionate about ready to go before they retire. When you stop doing and start sitting, that's when things start sucking the life out of you. Also, it is a vulnerable time and post retirement depression can get you if you find yourself not knowing what to do with yourself.

When you produce 3lbs at idle you will have plenty of MAF
Well yeah... soot or "coal" is unburnt fuel and this machine is so perfectly tuned thar it's burning everything on each injection and lifter move

You do know that superchargers originated on diesels, then they moved into the petrol world via Hot Rodding. This is in no way a new thing or a radical new idea to put a blower on a diesel, even in more recent times

Holly cow the response on this beast was incredible for a diesel, I drive semi's for a living and never ever has a diesel responded with crisp punctual response like this! Mr Banks and his team has set a bar so high those cummings and powerstroke fellas will be left scratching there heads down to the bone trying to copy this setup!! Well done! Well done! I had wanted a diesel pickup now I really want a Gale Banks Duramax truck!!! Release the smack down I can't wait to see the numbers this monster is going to put down wow!! History has been made fellas and we all witnessed it here today!!!

It responds like a gasoline engine
Uh why would anyone with a cummins or powerstroke want to copy this? Im sure with a little searching you can find cummins and powerstrokes that have been supercharged, maybe not with this much investment and technology involved but nonetheless. I can guarantee no matter what "numbers this monster is going to put down". There are multiple cummins and powerstrokes that put down more. No I don't hate duramax or any other diesel brand but I can guarantee that this isn't going to do anything special as far as numbers go.
Manufacturers are interested in fuel efficiency, meeting EPA regulations, and meeting warranty cost limits, and therefor have absolutely no interest in supercharging...
And to get absolute peak horsepower, you get further with turbocharging because the power you use to drive the supercharger is taken from the crankshaft, which is therefor loaded higher than a turbocharged engine with the same horsepower. I.e. mechanical strength limits are met sooner with supercharging than with turbocharging.
@@jbowen1831 Well I disagree totally. While there are many diesels that may appear to match or exceed the power output of Bank’s diesel, they will do so with heavy smoke and high EGT’s, and almost none will have the throttle response of this monster. This engine has what I call predictable, reliable power and torque, while maintaining longevity. No other diesel builder designs this much longevity and reliability while building an engine. Extreme thought and care was given to this build, while most builders think that smoke is the way to show power, all while flushing efficiency down the toilet.. Banks is the best and will continue to be the best. Banks didn’t say this would put out the most, because lots of other builders have more powerful engines, but they get destroyed in multiple runs. Have you heard the term heat-soaked? That’s because there’s not enough air density to cool the whole intake system and powertrain, and the excess heat from combustion radiates through the entire engine, eventually robbing power from it. I’m sure Bank’s diesel will have repeatable numbers time after time after time on the track and won’t suffer much from heat soaking.
In case there was any doubt at all that Gale was born with a wrench in his hand, seeing him get choked up hearing this monster roar puts that to rest.

Congratulations to Gale and his crew for an amazing accomplishment with his Dirtymax Engine! When my father attended Diesel Mechanics class in 1961, his instructor said they would never create a diesel engine that turned more than 2k RPM'S..I can't wait to show him this unbelievable Monster!
My stock 6.7 Cummins happily turns 4300. The Mercedes om606 can turn 6000+
They already had Diesels that turned over 2k for a few decades before 1961.
Black Smoke Racing in Finland run their OM648 Mercedes engine 7.2k rpm, diesel ofc :)
GM 2 stroke diesels were above that RPM even then.
As a teenager of the 80's and an avid Motorweek fan, to this day remember I believe a segment on a Bank's turbo GMC Suburban. It was instant love at first sight.....

Iv heard diesels before big engines sounding strong and insane but this sounds angry awesome angry it sound better than most petrol engines

It's a great sound and super throttle response for any motor, although unexpected from a diesel... but this is a Banks project so surprises are no surprise.
My grandpa throws the Banks catalog at every truck he gets so he doesn't have any worries towing in the mountains.
UH time to get a contract with a tire supplier, that motor is gonna eat tires for breakfast lunch and dinner 😂

Gales expressions were priceless, his commentary was as honest as I have ever heard. It’s amazing all the preparation and engineering that has went into this project, but when it actually runs and works, it makes it all worth while. Mr Banks is my engineering hero. No black smoke, I don't see anybody's eyes watering but for tears of Joy. This is why yeah banks diesel is at the top.
It was great to hear that a couple Aussie motorsport brands (Motec & Turbosmart) were used in this fabulous build.
That might be the best sounding diesel I've ever heard! I'm a "gas engine" guy, don't get me wrong, I do like & respect most diesel engines. I just never really cared for the low rpm's of diesel engines. But now this engine, "sounds" like is revving up to gas engine rpm levels. Great job Gail and team! I bet that was a nerve racking moment for your team during that first startup! 😅

Gale is like a kid with new toys! And he’s a mechanical genius too. He got me laughing when he had that significant spiritual event. No turbines in the way and the sound was like no other. When I score my next Durtymax I certainly want it to have the Banks treatment! Love this channel
Sounds amazing. You can actually hear the true Duramax exhaust note. Instead of hearing a Turbo. Also I hope Banks develops a Centrifugal Super Charged kit also because those pro chargers sound Kool too.
The only reason to run centrifugal is if the engine can rev to the moon
@@nikki5399how much it revs doesnt really matter for low revving engines you just change pulley size...
@@MV-ri7zu That’s not how that works. It’s not like a turbo where you build full boost pressure at a set rpm. Centrifugal superchargers all build boost directly linear to engine rpm. If you put a super small pulley to build boost early it would either destroy itself when it got to higher rpm’s or the pulley would slip, whichever came first.
I can’t imagine how cool would it be to work there, and hear all of Gale’s stories!

Ever since the first D-max I worked on, I've wondered how a supercharged ONLY dmax would sound. I knew banks made a super-turbo charged engine, but turbo quiets the exhaust down. This was awesome! Thanks everyone who worked on it.

Absolutely beautiful. My 1964 3/4 ton Chevy that I have had since 1971 will be done this year. The truck never got to Lockjaw condition, with 40,000 mi but with a 498 BBC N.A. it will still be fun to drive. I have been following your fantastic build and look forward to see it drive. Thank you for all the passion you put into your projects.
