Are you sure this dates from 1949?
The Saab-92 and the Morris Oxford driving in the background are still in the Drawing Board if this is 49.
The little green Austin A35 in front of Bucks Palace needs to be told he won't be designed for another 7 years.
The clincher afraid is the Vauxhall Victor at 2:58, this car didn't come out until 1957.
Secondly, Petrol rationing went on to well into the 1950s so it was uncommon to see so many private cars swanning around even in London.
I'm also fascinated by the Irish Tricolours flying in the Mall, a very unusual event indeed.
Many Thanks and sorry for being a vintage car nerd.

Yeah intrigued by all your points. Not an expert but a few of the motors did look suspiciously modern. Having said that there are an awful lot of older 1930s to 1940s era motors also. Which might look equally a little out of place in 1957 or after......
The Irish flag particularly intrigued me (as an Irishman). And is perhaps the biggest clue to the date. The first state visit to the UK by an Irish president was not until 2014. So that's not it. However in 1949, the Ireland Act which recognised the Irish Republic which was officially declared by the Irish government itself in 1948 was passed by Westminster. Would that cause Irish flags to fly? I wonder, but I cant think of any other event in that entire era that would trigger it.
That does add to the idea of 1949 as a date. Alas it doesn't explain the modern cars you pointed out....

@@fiachramaccana280 I'm afraid the Vauxhall Victor definitely places it after 1957.
It wasn't unusual to see many older looking cars driving around in the early 1960s.
The Second world war halted commercial motorcar development for nearly 8 years.
Basically the models that were being made in 1939 were still made after the war up until the mid 1950s and most of those went for export to try to boost the home economy.
The London Taxis have aways looked old fashioned, especially the old Beardmores that didn't really change for 25 years.
Purchase tax at between 33% to 66% made cars really expensive so people who could afford one kept it going as long as possible, you didn't have to worry about emission controls back then.
My Father had a 1934 MG and he kept that until 1957 when it had to sell it to buy my Mum and Engagement Ring.

@@marklatimer7333 That's why I thought I'd watch the video to see if that thumbnail featuring a Vauxhall Victor (FA) was not representative of the content as my initial thought was, "Are you sure???" As it transpired it was part of the footage and I would say that the year described in the title is not just out by the odd year or so, rather, more like possibly a whole decade, which is not good at all, certainly if this channel is what looks like a commercial venture. It would have been welcome had there been a closer look at the Beefeater to see if he was emblazoned with 'GR VI' or 'ER II' for a definite confirmation that this was really 1949 or a then-future year.

I think the solution to the paradox of 1957 cars being seen in 1949 is that this film consists of footage taken over a number of years, so sadly the 1949 in the title is no more than partially correct, at best.

Have you got any films just south of the river Thames. Poorer area but a brilliant place to be brought up in. I was born in 1950.❤ Enjoyed your film clips.

Definitely not 1949. The senior police officer on horseback at 2.58 is Assistant Commissioner Henry Hunt who was promoted to that rank in 1969. The flag in the background indicates that the occasion was the state visit of the President of Eire, Patrick Hillery, in that year. So the footage is at least twenty years later than claimed.

Certainly unlikely to be Irish flags in 1949, as that was the date of Ireland leaving the commonwealth.

Absolutely beautiful. People were a lot better dressed back then although there was still a lot of austerity in postwar Britain.
Those Dutch tourists were so picturesque in their national costume.

There is something different about London then and now, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Absolutely NOT 1949! As other commentators have mentioned more like late 1960s.

Footage from 1949?? My guess is early 60's. The one who has put a wrong date on it is an Italian guy.
Don't believe everything you see or read. If you want to start a "historical footage" channel, do your own research please.
