I remember it well as a child. Every Sunday. Have you noticed how many markets across London have closed down over the last 30-40 years? Either that or they have become yet another fast food market. The markets were one of the hubs of the community
I.remember walking up and down East lane countless times as a kid with my dad . Stopping at the jellied eel stall, and the saspirilla stall on our way to see my Nan and Grandad, who lived on East street. Wonderful times.
Just the best day's down there i remember the flower seller .. used to buy my mum's flowers there every sunday .. Eels my nan got them from him .. blackcurrant we had every time we went there as well .. if i remember it was sixpence ❤
I well remember the Sarsapirilla seller in East Lane. 😊 Don't remember the jellied eel stall though. He seems to have been doing a roaring trade in this film.
@@returnofthegmac9203 It was from Baldwins and they had a shop on the Walworth Road (think it may still be there) and you used to get it in a pint jug. Anyway to answer your question you can get it in Tesco, think it may be classed in the 'world foods' section rather than with the usual squash, cordials etc.
Hi, was your Uncles stall a fruit and veg stall about 3 stalls from the start of the market by any chance? My Dad had a clothes stall next to him for 20 years.
@@robbochops No sold Hats Scarfs Gloves Socks etc. Although my dad had a Greengrocers on Dalwood Street just off of Haval Street opposite Lakanal Tower Block back in the late 70's early 80's. My Uncle used too look after others stools too. His full name was Tommy Steadman
was there just the other day, full of cheap luggage stalls and hair extension stalls, horrible place now, like an advert for what not to do to your country.
Having the sound would have made this priceless.

When our country was so much cleaner.
Yeah it was clean that the prime minister at the time, Edward heath, was looking at ways to clean London up because it was so notoriously scruffy

I loved that stuff too all nice and hot.
I wonder if it's still sold anywhere?

@@Gravym69 Thanks very much mate 👍
Always stopped off for a Sarsaparilla
The loss of England is upsetting.
When England's culture still had its own identity.
When trolls weren't russian
Back in the good old days of Jimmy Savile and Gary Glitter this beautiful nation had its own identity. 😢
Many happy visits - looking for bargains and Sarsaparilla ! 🤣
Omg bought back so many memories 🥲 what great days❤
@2:42 Who is that young lady with her child ? She must be in her 70's now and her kid must be between 50 and 60.
Now look at the UK 8th October 2011 film and compare the people with this one.
Why would you care, trollski?
What sort of a stupid question is that?! Don't bother to comment further you will be ignored as you deserve.@@zeddeka
Wish we could go back to those good old days of Jimmy Savile and Gary Glitter mate 😢.
@@southlondon86 What the hell have they got to do with East Street market. The establishment running things in the country, possibly.
@@bbcisrubbish Just saying mate that England was truly England back in the Savile days. True Brits unlike in the 2011 film.
Great footage. That clapperboard between takes, means this footage originally, definitely had sound.
fantastic
The good old days
such a beautiful country with well mannered citizens 🎉🎉🎉❤
My uncle Tom ran a stall there back in the 50's too the late 80's

@robbochops there was a stallholder called Tom who used to sell potatos and veg opposite Marie's. Tom had a daughter called Tracy.
such a shame theres no sound
No sound ???!
Bloke selling black currant looks 40 and 80 years old at the same time
It was a long time ago but I always remembered hearing that the sasprilla bloke was either Henry Coopers brother or Tommy Coopers brother ???
Why the use of the clap there is no sound to be synchronized to ?
Oh I could eat a bowl of jellied ills now with loads of vinegar and white pepper, I can't cope
watching this
East Street was not East London its in South London Walworth Roman Road is East London not fashionable anymore to go to markets lost its charm
lovely to see I was 12 at the time
Little did we know back then how our way of life and culture would be completely destroyed buy mass immigration. I cry for what it has now become.
Where English people once lived 😩
I used to exchange my comics every week.
All locals have been displaced now 🥺
It was great in the 70s and 80s not now
