An original 1966 British Pathe video about some of London's quirks and the reason people are attracted to the city. Initially called "London" the title has been changed to differentiate it from other clips in the archive. [Edited - 07/06/2012]
A look at various attractions in the Capital - more historical than swinging!
Panning shot down busy market in Berwick St. M/S of a salesman selling china to a crowd in Gravesend Market with cheeky cockney banter (synchronised sound).
High angled shot of Trafalgar Square. M/S of a man and woman feeding pigeons in the Square. C/U of the girl with pigeons landing on her hand. High angled shot of a barge going up a canal, pan to busy London street nearby. Panning shot of smartly dressed people riding through Hyde Park. Two deer are seen feeding from the hand of a fisherman by pond.
M/S of a calm lake, pan to a red double decker riding past. The bus is seen passing the National Gallery with St. Martin's in the Fields in the background. Low angled shot of St. Martin's spire. Various shots of Church spires and towers around London. L/S of the exterior of the Law Courts.
Low angled shot of a scaffolding covered dome of St. Paul's. Various shots of different parts of the cathedral, workmen are seen chipping and sanding off thick crusts of soot from St. Paul's. Panning shot follows a young couple in an M.G. car driving into the Barbican. Various shots of workmen on scaffolding cleaning old buildings, good views of the Capital from the scaffolding.
M/S of men in Cavalier and Roundhead costumes marching in the Lord Mayor's show. Low angled shot of children in the crowd waving Union Jacks. M/S of the famous gold carriage passing a platform of dignitaries. M/S of vintage cars passing in the procession.
M/S of the car themed, 'Two Hoots' restaurant in Bishopsgate. The couple (seen in the M.G.) are seated at a table, a waiter in driving goggles shows them the menu. Various shots of car related artefacts on the walls. Various shots of diners being served. More shots of the cockney market salesman entertaining the crowd with his banter. Various shots of a Pan American airliner landing at an airport. Passengers are seen coming down aeroplane steps, other planes are seen taking off.
M/S of the M.G. coming under Admiralty arch, point view shot from inside the car as it drives down the Mall. Various shots of Household Cavalry riding into their barracks. M/S of a horse and cart riding by the Thames. M/S of the couple looking over the Thames at the Houses of Parliament. Some shots of a water scooter on the Thames (see note in record c). The couple get back into their M.G. and drive past Parliament.
M/S of an Evening Standard van parking. M/S of press photographers. Various shots of a chef icing a giant cake. Britt Ekland is escorted into shot, she climbs a ladder and cuts into the cake. As she cuts, Peter Sellers bursts out of the cake driving a Mini (her present). More shots of the press, Brit and Peter lean on the car posing for photographs. M/S of Frank Ifield in a pub in Fleet St., he is being interviewed by Pat Doncaster. M/S of journalists around a pub table, pan to Frank's table. George Casey, sports journalist, eating a pub sandwich. C/U of the back to front sign for the 'Gentlemen's' - a printer's joke! Various shots of theatrical and historical artefacts on the pub walls.
Various shots of a Sherlock Holmes theme pub in Baker Street that looks like the detective's study, the landlord wears a deerstalker. Various shots of a pub in Covent Garden where Barrow boys from the market mix with "baritones of the Opera House". Some shots of vegetable deliveries at Covent Garden.
More shots of the cheeky cockney barrow boy selling china to an eager crowd - he throws a pile of china in the air and catches them. Several 'plants' in the audience start the bidding - very 'Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'!
Note: this story is a bit of an odd mixture - it appears to use material from other Colour Pictorials: the water scooter is in AMPHIBIOUS WATER SCOOTER in CP 574, it also revisits places previously featured - the Sherlock Holmes pub is in SHERLOCK HOLMES PUB in CP 162. Other sequences may also have been reused or revisited.
Cuts exist - please see separate record.

From back in the day when London was still beautiful.
It nothing like it noe
In 1966 my parents took us to London for a 2 week holiday. We had the best time there, and although I was only 10, I still have clear memories of our holiday. I still remember watching the England football team practising in Hyde Park just a few days before the World Cup Final. We left on the morning of the Final and drove to Stafford to visit our relatives, arriving just in time to watch the game. What a day that was as we all celebrated England winning the World Cup.
Well said....well said!
Miss this London…tragic loss
This is the London I remember as a child. After Blair got it in 1997 he started the rot that has culminated in London now being more or less Londonistan and ruled by the Grand Caliph Sadiq Khan.
Tony Blair was a git
Politicians like Blair did not help matters admittedly, however the demise of our parents and grandparents generations have also a lot to do with it I believe. There was no one shooting at me when I was in my teens nor was there bombs falling on my head. I could also call on a friend without being told he/she had been killed since I last saw them. Nothing much bothered those generations,,they were accustomed to lifes uncertainties.I well remember the late Enoch Powell in a TV interview on the Falkland War. The interviewer was trying to point out the possible catastrophies thar could befall such an adventure. Three times he pointed this out and three times he got the same answer,' You have to win' who could continue to argue in the face of such military experience and quiet confidence born of intellect ?
@@philiprufus4427 You make some very cogent points. Wish more people were like you.
Back in the days when London was a safe place to live….how sad to see the difference now….it has been ruined 😥
True. Its is so dirty looking in places now. Dark depressing unsafe. It so sad to see.
I WAS IN SWINGING LONDON IN 1966 I LIVED IN ISLINGTON NORTH LONDON THE MUSIC AND NIGHT LIFE WAS FANTASTIC THE CLOTHES WERE FAB AS WELL WONDERFUL SPECIAL HAPPY GOLDEN MEMORIES ❤
The Narrators always spoke with a distinctive style in these Pathé reels. Beautiful British accents you don't hear anymore. Today narration lacks this unique style of speech delivery, because narration nowadays is way too casual and americanised for my liking.God Save the Queen and all that is Great about Britain.
They had a project going back a long time to track British accents.
One is analysis of the Queen's address.
But there was also film and audio collected by region and social class.
With a bit of Google magic you can find them.
Yep, back then the English accent was a work of art, not like today innit.

People were slim, clean and tidy and so were tube stations and trains....
Most of the hard working people in this film are now turning in their graves at what has become of the capital they helped to build. A national disgrace.
They didn't build it, they survived in it and as better opportunities came along they moved with them.
They wanted modern cars, cental heating and double glazing, times move on, same as people
Those 60's and 70's and 80's days will never come back. Good bye to the western world of the past, hello to ...? a shyteshow of horrors where everyone hates each other and their are no 'norms'.
I was 18 years old in 1966. When I arrived in London for studying, I remained in Notting Hill Gate for fourteen years (I got married in London, and my kids were born there) .
As a new comer in 1966 I immediately fell in love with that beautiful, joyful, dynamic town. (We called it « swinging London ».To my opinion it was the very best place on Earth. And England was my love.
Today, I don’t like it any more. London has lost its beautiful soul. That makes me sad. London is no longer London. I keep on going back there because part of my family still lives there but I wouldn’t like staying in London a very long time. The population is completely changed, and this is not for the best, on the contrary it is for the worst.
I know exactly what you mean. I was born and raised in London when it really was London. Crime was extremely low and the city was safe. The population back then was different and one could walk around without fear of being attacked both physically and verbally. The only foreigners were those from the ex-colonies (British Commonwealth) who tended to assimilate. Almost every person I come across in London today speaks with a foreign accent. I can't believe what's happened to this once great and vibrant city.
@@jacobrivers5728 crazy how that happened..same thing here in many places if not all places in the U.S. the Seattle-Tacoma area used to be one of the safest areas to raise a family now both cities are ranked among the most dangerous..it only took 10 years to completely flip
@@BFaluup This madness will only end when right thinking people stand up and say it ends and that can only be done by stopping self-serving, liberal woke politicians from inflicting more damage on society. I'm so angry and frustrated at seeing my beloved city overrun with worthless freeloading foreigners who live on welfare, walk around with an air-of-entitlement and have no respect for law and order or the British way of life. Whenever there's a crime reported in the media, the culprit always has an African, Muslim or Eastern European name. I've reached a point where I no longer care if people label me a racist as I know I'm not. I can only assume that Seattle is suffering the consequences of policies inflicted by the money hungry Clintons', Biden, and Pelosi & Co who are no better than Boris Johnson and his cronies.
The only london I want to visit
The genuine ordered ancient established British traditions that we grew up with in the 1960s - not the confected, inflated, political correctness that 70 years of unregulated multiculturalism has foisted upon us.
I liked the predominant monoculture that was the lived experience of the majority of the population in 1960s Britain.
I don't feel any need to apologize for the Britain I was born into and loved.
Terrific micro documentary of beautiful and dignified London. Great images of the '60s and excellent video quality too. Many thanks BP!

It is great. We could return London to being British too, if Brexit is finally done and immigration is halted.
@@cryingfreeman2703 you're a cretin.
How times have changed. I remember being told by our school teacher back in 1967 that life won't be as promised come the millennium with a fabulous future we were all led to believe. How right he was.
why did he predict that? what led him to that conclusion?
@hawwndawg he was probably watching a program at the time called towards the year 2000 when we were led to believe that everything would be far better come the 21 century when we would expect to see monnerrail transport systems everywhere etc but he told us to take it with a pinch of salt as things will probably be a lot different.
When London was London, full of character. Now its just an immigrant ghetto with glass towers and Westminster.
1966....the year England won the World Cup. London was so nostalgic back then...Singaporean here..
Now you are getting it. Stay away then
ken tang I was so lucky to work in Singapore for 4 years late 1970's and early 80's.. That was a time when Singapore was 'nostalgic' with godowns and even kampongs. It dramatically changed in just a few years. I will never forget The Mitre Hotel in Killiney Road. Happy days.

Some interesting things. No seat belts, no fall arresting equipment for masonry workers but, and this is a biggie, there are stonemasons using masks and water spray to stop dust. We have just recently found a significant increase in stone masons dying from lung disease because of not wearing masks when fitting and cutting stone bench tops.
The scary thing is the sixties wasn't that long ago and seeing it from then to now what's it going to be like in another fifty years well I won't be about to see it unfortunately our grandkids will
My friends and I used to buy a ticket called a Twin Rover for about 10/6d and we could use the underground and buses all day. London was great in those days; grubby and busy and warm and friendly. Gone forever!

@2:50 It’s interesting to see what kind of food was being served in these restaurants - jellied eels, chopped herring, tripe and mash, boiled beef?! No doubt a lot has been lost of old London, but at least the food has come a long way :D There’s another British Pathe video about Covent Garden in the 50s, and you can see people ordering what looked like horrible little sausage sandwiches. The sausages were kept in some kind of brine. They were sliced in half and held together by two tiny little pieces of white bread. The sausages were also covered in lots of vinegar and mustard! Made me gag a little.
The year I was born, it changed a lot since then, absolutely tragic. 58 years later . . . . Look at the mayor, that says it all.
