- Living in the Dominican Republic as an American expat takes more than just money. In this video, I'll share my experiences of expat living in Santo Domingo and the challenges I've faced. Money is not enough to thrive in this beautiful but complex country.

It doesn’t matter where you go on the planet, money alone will never be enough. A community amongst your peers is essential to live comfortably.
💯
Not exactly i stay in dubai for 3 months with money n i bounce. Ill prob go back just for the show fews days not more than a week. Trust me. Im pretty sure he not xpendin crazy money over there to live good. You will be good there 4 k a month. Or 1k a month dependin were you live at.. last time i was there maybe about a year ago i blew up around 30ks in 21 days no cars no rent. Just clubin n chasin. Cara were there house were. Its only hard over there if you chasin than you gotta be rich.
I’m dominican 🇩🇴 and I approve this message 😅, definitely something noone tells you, “wealthy” dominicans with no money because joy is our currency. It is part of our culture to make a joke or meme out of a problem as a way to cope and as a reminder of things that matter more than money to us (your family, your health, helping someone else, etc)
I’ve lived in Puerto plata also and you are correct you have to be rich in spirit
When in Rome, do as the Romans do; when in the Dominican Republic, do as the Dominicans do; it's that simple, let's not make it complicated. When you travel to another country, never try to change the status quo, bc if you do, you'll be like a bird without a nest, flying erratically forever, unable to find your North. Just chill, relax and enjoy the moment. No country is perfect, and our good outweigh our bad by a lot. This goes for them critics and perfectionists out there. God bless you all 😊
Well said. Couldn't have said it better 👍🏾
(edited out)
Good points about what?
i am dominican living in the states, you forgot to say When living in US do as North americans say
@@PolishBehemothand you have been here 4 times like for what. Do yourself a favor and don’t come back 🤷🏾♀️
Because I'm Dominican I have to say thank u for the positivity towards the Dominican republic
You're welcome 🙌🏾
Well said !! Im from toronto canada and been living here in RD since 2021 best move i ever made !!!
Yessiiir. Congrats!
It’s easier to adjust in certain parts of DR like Punta Cana. For example, in my area, you’ll find more English speaking residents than Spanish speakers. And the restaurants and businesses cater to foreigners. It isn’t perfect, but probably easier for an American with money to adjust to.
I agree with this, for those looking for that type of lifestyle...👍🏾
Mr. Jay thank you for sharing your thoughts on life. You are a motivator.
I appreciate that, bro👊🏾
Patience is the #1 thing for me. Dominicans do things when they feel like it or get around to it. I’ve had to just accept that and tell myself tranquilo. I’m working on it. 😅
Facts...lol!
You're right about adapting to the culture, and it applies anywhere you go. Well said.
👊🏾
As far as the diet, you are absolutely doing the right thing Brother. Keep your rice intake under control. Good on you for awareness, intention and execution. Good job Bro!!! 👍🏾
Much appreciated bro.
I cut out sugar and processed foods and it made a hugs difference in my blood. I went from pre diabetic to normal. Keep up the good work
Yes siiir. Definitely cutting out those processed foods. The sugar is hard though...lol! Did you completely remove sugar or did you just dial back?
@@JayAbroad the sugar I eat is from fruit. I start my day off with an egg mushroom and spinach omelette a purple potato and an air fried sweet plantain . Watermelon, green apples , lemons and strawberries and blueberries
@mervinperson2887 cool thanks for sharing.
You get it right all the time James. Just keep pushing positivity. I for one appreciate you for that. It does take more than money to live there. Your going to need that family structure , including extended family y a few good friends. You already mention exactly all the other qualities , a person will need to live in the Dominican Republic. Splendid James, splendid 👍👍👍
Yessiiirr thanks Dee🙏🏾
Alabama, sweet home Alabama.
Good stuff Jay! Bless up!
Thanks!
You nailed it again 👏🏽 bruh, especially about not perpetuating stereotypes about us. 💯💯...3 weeks & loading champ, take care, the DR will be my home
Yessuuuhh. Congrats fam. I know those 3 weeks can't come fast enough for you😅.
@@JayAbroad you got that right ✅️ 👊🏽
You videos are pure gold, keep up the good work man.
Thanks for the feedback, will do!
I love this .. the point about leaving your culture for another and the mental toughness required .. i get that!!! You and me both gotta work on the language brother haha. Great vid!
Yesssiiirr, thanks bro!
5:29 A cold, delicious and delivered presidente! Wrapped and all. Nice!
Doesn't get any better than that💪🏾
Thanks for the video. I agree. "Simpler, but not easier" and character (as well as adaptability) matters.
Absolutely!
Great content! Thank you for sharing.
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it...
Yes its takes for us to show good character to live in DR or any other country .We are to show love and not think or show that we are better then them or anyone.
👍🏾
Make the best of it, my brother.
Definitely....🙏
Sugar is an addictive drug and you don't find out how addictive until you try to stop consuming it. I tried to go sugar free a couple of months ago and it was one of the hardest things I ever did. i used to smoke cigarettes and it was even harder than quitting those. And yes carbs like rice and potato spike your blood sugar levels as well.
Tell me about it, it's been hard to not bake me a chocolate cake😅
Most of the stuff with added sugars is easy to drop but there are those treats man that you never stop missing. Nothing wrong with having them from time to time. That's what I tell myself anyways 😅
I was listening while doing my daily walk and I had to stop and write this when you mentioned getting up and leaving, and how it takes a special kind of person to get up and just leave everything. People talk that talk with no actions lol. Most dudes are scared to leave their block much less take a vacation somewhere. But yes, it truly does take a mentally tough individual to leave everything they know and just go live in a foreign country.. also what you said about being a bum in the USA. If you are a bum there you will more than likely be a bum in the other country lol
Thanks for sharing this bro. Glad it was inspiring enough to pause your walk to comment. 🙏🏾
I agree bro, money alone ain’t going to do it. You need that Presidente light too😂
Lol...that Presidente is a must have💪🏾
Good advise. I would also add having a car and your own spot.
This video is more about intangibles. But I get your point.
What’s good Bro! I appreciate the gems you consistently drop on your channel about living in the D.R. The airplane analogy was “CLASSIC” and right on point! Again, thanks Bro! Much respect…
Thanks fam!
I really enjoy a lot your comments. Stay positive and continue to do your thing.
I appreciate that..
I agree 100% never disappoint with your videos.
Smart speech!! Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure!
I like the way you see life in DR. Me being from overthere and leave in Brooklyn for 20 years and another 20 in WPB fl. Teach me a lot about life. Keep up being humble. Be safe Bro.
Thank you! Will do!
Good vid, it takes courage on your family's part to move and start a life in a different country. You and your family has done it! It is not only money but a different mind set! I have been trying to research different countries to move abroad! To those who are successful I applaud you🎉
Thank you for understanding. People think the journey is easy when it can be a challenge.
Jay again great video! Very informative and interesting video.
Thanks again...Glad you enjoyed it!
thanks for sharing Jay awesome me and my wife are planning to return to the DR. i’m from Louisiana between Baton Rouge an New Orleans and my wife is from Santaigo DR. this is my last year for retiring an moving to DR.
You're welcome. And congratulations I'm sure you are ready to move.
Man I love the opening road shots of this video rolling through the city. I can't wait to get back! You presented this video 💯 hope to run into you one day when I'm there, and have a Preidente "Con Vestido de Novia" 😂😂😂 keep up the good work Brother!
Let us know when you are back in the country.
Another home run, Jay. Congrats
Thanks again!
Como siempre muy buen video Jar,

I like you content my brother keep up the good work
I appreciate that
If you work out you can eat whatever in moderation. Remember that. 👍🏾
I do but I need to work out more. I now do 2 days in the gym and need to do more but it's tough because I don't enjoy working out😅
Hey Jay, keep up bro, truly appreciate your videos because everything you say is absolutely true. Just do your best to enjoy yourself living a simple lifestyle and enjoying that Presidente light. Salud 🍺
Thank you bro...
Hey Jay you wife is very intelligent.I always am watching its channel because she talks very interesting things about DR.
Thanks, I'll let her know.
Hi there, great content wonderful sharing
Thank you so much 🙂
Morning Gospel , Preach my Brother, you hit on many things, my pops always said live good behind because life is a circle and when you come back around you want to meet the good you left behind...And as far as the sugar I've eliminated it and most carbs and I have seen a major difference between my mind and body....Superb talk bro.. Keep them coming...
Brother when you and I spoke, and you told me your experience eliminating sugar and carbs it got me thinking. It's tough but I'm trying to dial back.
@@JayAbroad Bro you will notice the difference this I promise, stick with it, and yes it's difficult but worth it...
Will do...
@@JayAbroad What if I told you that I got rid of Diabetes in 4 months without medication? I cut carbs and lived on fat and proteins with some fiber (I'm no fan of damn broccoli) and dropped 65 pounds. I was happy to invest in a new slimmer wardrobe. But man... as Dominican, my Achilles heel is rice. I missed it so much!
Long story short, I gained 30 pounds back a year ago and haven't been able to shed them.
In my defense, I'm 62
Thanks for sharing this bro. I heard cutting carbs is key to keep diabetes under control or getting rid of them.
So true....Good content!!!
Thanks👍🏾
Hello Jay, Have you try to cut down on the "Pequeñas"? 🤭😂
Slow ya roll, homie😅
You are driving me crazy in a good way because I’m dominicano and that’s my dream to retire god wiling 🎉
😅
Yes, I am from Villa Mella.
I love Villa Mella, I just wish it wasn't so far from where I currently live or I'd go often.
Hello brother, I lived in Villa Mella until I was 20. Primaveral and Buena Vista 1. Great memories there 👍
Yessiir, Buena Vista 1 is my spot. I used to live there for about a year.
It’s not about commitment not in DR. Well if you don’t care to live with out electricity and water half of the week then you good. Better have a good health insurance. Because hospitals sucks. I live in Puerto Rico. Dominican Republic, Mexico ,USA and I went back to USA. Yes I want to live comfortable , for vacations it’s find but living it’s a different story.
I pray to God you're living your best life🙏
Thank you for sharing, Jay. 💯🙏
Any time💪💪
Whats up Jay, that rice and beans looked on point!! Nothing like home cooked food with a slice of avocado and tostones on the side! 😂 Bro, you might as well write a book, it'll be a best seller!! Love your content, enjoy yourself to the fullest! God bless my dude!
Yessiiirr bro, I appreciate this. Glad the content is resonating with people.
Facts!!!!! Enjoy DR brother.
Yesssiiiir!
Solid point of view my brother!!
I’m Dominican. It’s so hard to cut out that rice. 😅
It really it is
Excellent content I love it you are always on the top of the game.
Just love ❤.
Thank you 🙌🏾
People like you are important for Dominicans who have been deported from the US that can't hack it in DR. I've met a lot of deportees that can't adjust to DR with a good number of them turning to hard drugs. This is paradise. I can't repay the DR for what it's done for me in terms of my education career business spirituality and it's sad that a lot of Dominicans, especially Dominicans in the US particularly in NY, just don't value our Country. Smh
Thanks bro. I appreciate you sharing this.
Like always enjoy listening you👌
I appreciate that!
Great video thank you for sharing your thoughts
Thank🙏🏾
MAN,ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO, I LIVE HER IN D.R AND IM RETIRED..THE HARDEST PART OF MY DAY IS EATING RIGHT AND FINDING SOMETHING TO DO WITH MY TIME ,
Definitely finding something to do with your time is key. Not sure what part of the island you're in but in Santo Domingo you can always find something to get into.
@@JayAbroad I live in caberette, and you know when you live here ,you get tired of sosua...
@@bigrobl7936 I can imagine bro...
Can you do a video on how you make your money to survive in the Dominican Republic? And also other ways to make money in the Dominican Republic as an expat.
My wife and I already did a video on this channel about how we make money. I recommend going back through my videos and watching it.
Remember Jay my country also you country you are very welcome in Dominican Republic
I appreciate that bro.💪
learning spanish is very key as well
You must didn't heart me say this in the video?
You are absolutely right! being a Dominican woman, leave the country when i was 10 to go live with my Dad. have my degree happy but lord after losing both of my parents. Thank God i have a place there. Both of my parents did good left me 2 properties there. Still i am here working doing what i should to survive. Every day i think of what it would be like if i actually lived there. life is so simply. The quality of life there can be explainable to what is going on here. Hands down. Enjoy and make the best out of everything, every moment that's just magic. Many blessings to you and your family. watching you speak so highly of my culture make me feel good, specially because your not a Native. May God Bless DR.
Thank you Donna and I appreciate you sharing this.
That true you have to understand the culture and integrate into the culture.
Fa sho💯
Amazing advice
Nice time piece Jizzle 🎉
Thanks bro🙌🏾
Jay, any chance you can get rid of that blurring effect from your videos as it makes me dizzy 🙈🙈. Keep up the good work
What blurring effect? My videos don't have an effect. You might need to stay off that "oooweee"...lol. That's what's making you dizzy 🤣
I dont do anything that requires fire. I like my Brugal and Barcelo😜😜
Villa mella is life, that’s my hood we right on La charle. Cutting and bending metal 🫡
I actually like Villa Mella and would visit more often if it wasn't so far from where I currently live.
@@JayAbroadthe little mall they just built is pretty cool too. Well be moving over soon, deff visiting in November
Right don’t try to change things down here you won’t win 😂
A losing battle from the beginning 😅
Can you give us examples of how people try to change the culture?
Anything they aren't accustomed to doing.
Good info, Thanks.
You bet!💪
Respect man salad lou from philly
Thanks bro 🙏🏾
Good video. Yes don't try to change things there just embrace it😂😊
Exactly!!
DR I eat like shit cause I eat everything, its hard to eat healthy in DR.......
If u go dolo to villa mella ur Dominican bro but I would be careful with that camera and chain out like that next time my guy next time hold me some chicharron though it’s the best there and I would love for thev people watching this to listen well to a African American citizen telling yall it is very hard to leave everything behind and adapt to a new culture and way of living the next time yall come across a person in the United States that can’t speak English or doesn’t understand how things work in their present surrounding.. all love manito
Lol...I lived in that part of Villa Mella for a year. I know all those people there. Of course I wouldn't do what I'm doing all in any area of Villa Mella. I appreciate the concern but I'm no fool,...far from it. I'm always very aware of my environment.
My dad move back there 10yrs ago. I’m thinking seriously to move there but my wife (is in doubts, bc our adults children 😅) we are so Americanized n I’m Dominican 😅
I was Americanized to but it didn't stop me. If you have the finances I don't see why anyone would want to continue to live in the US.
Dominican spanish is on an entirely different level.
Very different.
Salute for eating healthier bro 🎉
Yessiiirr 💪🏾
*just discovered this channel. I’m in Sosua right now (Ocean View Luxury Collection Resort). His woman just brought him a beer without him asking. This dude probably doesn’t considered himself a passport bro (Not sex tourist), but he’s definitely passport bro adjacent*
I actually did ask my wife of 15 years (married for 10) to bring me a Presidente. And no I don't consider myself a passport anything. I'm a professional black man from Alabama married to a Dominican women.
@@JayAbroad I meant that as a positive. No disrespect, meaning maybe she figured her guy wanted a beer and she was proactive. As for the passport reference I’m saying men who leave the U.S. (usually for years if not permanently) for a better life and traditional women, hence PPB adjacent.
I appreciate the clarification. I really couldn't tell the angle because it almost seemed like wife was being referred to as some random Chica. But gotcha. 💪🏾💪🏾
Please, I would like you to talk a little about the history of the Dominican Republic, which I see is the first European settlement, the first city, the first university, the first cathedral.
Doesn't interest me at all. I couldn't care less who was or what was first. I live in the present. This is not a history channel.
Like Jay said, this is not a history channel. Please Google it and hope this type of information makes you want to visit! 😉
You sound so Dominican 😂. Why tf do you need to have a gringo talk about a history that you already know? 😂
Insane, I know. What I look like talking about the history of a country, I'm not from nor have I studied in depth.
What do you do to get extra income in DR if you dont me asking?
My wife and I already did a video on it. You can check it out here ua-cam.com/video/TyZ1x9PtTVQ/v-deo.html
Facts 💯
My man💪🏾💪🏾
😅 I feel you
Jay I’m a big fan of all you and Norberis content but that Presidente has a lot of refined sugar in it… how are you going to live in DR and not have a nice cold presidente? 😂
Lol...it impossible not to have a cold presidente every now and then. Honestly, I don't drink a lot of beer here more rum which I has a lot of sugar in it too. I typically never drink more than one at a time. I didn't say I was cutting out sugars completely, just cutting back. I used to eat a lot of sugars.
I nominate my (Dee)Jay for President(e)

Hi.you wife is Dominican?
yes
OutKast😂
Yep😅
Dominican Republic it’s a third world.
I pray to God you're living your best life🙏
The United States of America is a country within the continent of North America. Canada is a part of the North American continent, but they identify themselves as Canadians. There is also the continent of South America is another continent and that continent even further South of the United States. than the Dominican Republic, all of those countries within these 2 continents don't identify themselves as Americans, only the United States, citizens are considered and identified as Americans, all of the other countries in North America, such as Canada, identify themselves not as Americans. We go into South America and you have the countries of Brazil and Belize and Argentina and Chile, and they do not identify themselves as Americans. They identify themselves as the identity of their country. The DR was once one big island known as Hispanola. Just wanted to clear up false information.
The DR was once all big island know as Hispanola
Bro, I appreciate the history lesson but I understand all of this. I went to school for 16 years. If you travel to the other side of the world and say you are from America, Canada nor Dominican Republic would pop up in anybody's mind. The United States does. Everyone's knows this, I'm sure. Getting in the weeds over semantics is unproductive. I appreciate the comment but I'd rather focus on things that move the needle in people's lives.
Have you ever heard of the Caribbean sea before? Lol your original comment has no sense of direction. Most people who know a little geography know that information already.@@krhodessch
DR was actually called Quisqueya prior to being colonized.
Dude, are you 12? You're not saying anything people don't already know, you're not being "edgy" nor explaining some kind of hidden knowledge. However, AMERICAN is the demonym of people from the United States. That's what it is whether you like it or not. It's not wrong it just is.
U know brh its sad that our people dont even want or have the love for each other like other races of people smh but god bless u brh keep getting better
That's true. It is sad.
