you're just severely handicapped vs most of your enemies because this plane doesn't fit the gameplay that war thunder toptier is.
You can get kills and win matches fine in it because of the nature of the game, but saying it can go toe to toe with many of the toptier dedicated fighters is straight up silly.

From my experience. It does alot better in sim. It's Britain's first plane with PD IFF which makes a world of differenc, and TWS helps to prioritize targets. Its certainly not meta in sim either. But it has some very welcome additions :)

I think that its issue is that it's an interceptor type plane. While it isn't bad you are at a severe disadvantage due to that against stuff like Mig29, F16, Mirage 2000, etc
you are up against plane that designed from almost the get go to be air superiority fighter which can do most things fighter need well, against plane designed specifically for performance or weapon load which need sacrifice of something to complete its task
It’s designed to kill bombers, sure it can kill fighters in self defense but don’t expect to do well.
I personally think there is something wrong with the model
@@Alex2K there (with the IDS at least) was talk of slats not being implemented correctly, so lower sustained turn rate than irl. it will not make a significant difference even if we do get them to be honest though

6:19 shoutout to the SMT that snagged an R-3R kill, insane gaming
the r3r is a good missile like any other early missiles you have to learn to use it. but unlike the others the skill ceiling is much higher. so it can become quite powerfull if you know how to use it. the migs 21s has r3r as its most powerfull and noobs call it bad good players call it one of the most powerfull. and it can use rockets as makeshift flares.
R-3R is at least sorta usable at really high altitudes but only against people who don't run chaff. It's a significantly weaker AIM-9C pretty much, and on a worse radar.
R-3R is so bad that you can dodge it even at high altitude which is laughable

@@nnteslann1928 it just doesn't you just cant see the chaff at close range so it looks like it locking flares. best way to use the r3r is to shoot it at super close range, funny enough the r3r is one of the fastest accelerating missiles in game, so the enemy cant react fast enough most of the time to either dodge or chaff it. thats in a headon which is the r3r best situation, the other best way to use it is to dive directly down on enemys who dont see you the radar can see targets who are 1km over the ground or even less they also dont get rwr warning. you just have to lead it and shoot at a range the missile can guide enough to hit.

The F.3 currently doesn’t use the radar it historically used, it’s using the weakest Foxhunter radar. Gaijin has acknowledged this, and they’re currently looking into it, so expect the radar to become pretty much the best ingame once that’s fixed.

@@thor923 it didn't have hmd, but it had like a stick that you could use to slave the seeker, and Gaijin is also looking on a way to implement it. The phantoms (British at least) also had it.

They've also limited the plane with 15° AOA for some stupid reason when it could pull well over 21° IRL.
In other words: You have much better options, but you can do "fine"
Which is enough for me to start grinding it (this fellow only has up to the Vampire, so he's in for quite the long haul of a grind)
Highlights of the tree:
Sea Hawk is not an 8.0 plane but it fights well, can pull just as much AoA as a vampire if you have proper flaps management.
Swift F.7 is probably the best British jet relative to it's BR. It can get a crazy amount of energy with that afterburner, and Fireflashes are a nice gimick. Be careful maxing out the elevator and using ailerons though above 850 kph, it will reliably snap a wing off.
Hunter F.1 isn't what it once was, and just as high as skill floor as it was back then, but in a downtier nothing can compete.
Hunter F.6 is actually decent at 9.7 now! You have swords in a bracket filled with guns... but your swords are *really* sharp. Stay vigilant, never take a fair fight, and it'll perform better than it has any right to. Mind the all aspect carriers of course.
Harrier GR.3 has got good missiles, good acceleration, and flares. Nothing special, but it works.
And that's about it. FG.1 and FGR.2 are still capable, though still held back what with it now having the worst maneuverability and armament of all the Phantoms.
And a better plane makes it easier to do well in. Just like in a fast car with good handling you don't need to be a professional to do better than someone in a toyota corolla. In war thunder that means you can play more aggressively, and aren't just forced to play like a rat anytime you want a kill

@@lukeskylicker you forgot to mention the scimitar which is probably my fave from that whole tech tree. A lot of power, no pull, and 4 missiles. Kinda suffers against all aspects but who doesn’t tbh, 4 bullpups for memes is nice too
@@Lucy-ls5to That rudder though... If it's hard to get guns on target in the Tornado then it's impossible to do it in the Scimitar.
We're working on it on the forums. W-list is the worst possible production version of the radar, it's snapping at G-limits it should be able to take (even before taking into account the 1.5 times structural limit Gaijin gives), and it's not pulling as much AoA as it should.
It's not bad, but it's also not a finished aircraft.
Definitely a better upgrade after three and a half years of the FGR.2

F104 going "you can't dogfight an f104" meanwhile earlier LOST a dogfight, then started running straight back to his airbase like a coward, so dunno what his version of a "dogfight" is.
my recommendation is to bind thrust reverser to the airbrake key (H) which forces your wings to sweep quicker and can avoid wing rip as you can decelerate very quickly. Also allows you to sit on the enemy tail when they are slow.
what should that help? you just throw away all your energy against ppl, that can outaccelerate you anyways
well this works better with the tornado ids as you cant turn so you might as well force an overshoot. Also at high speeds when needing to get a shot it really helps with sweeping wings forward quicker and also stops the annoying mach cone from blinding you
Rare to see 2 Tornadoes still alive so late in the match, good flying on both ends.

I completely agree with you about the car analogy, it fits perfectly with how warthunder is. For instance; a f5c isn't going to be touching a mig23 unless he makes some big mistakes, or the f5 catch's him off guard. Same with a phantom vs mig29, ive had people tell me unironically to "just get good". A f4j cannot do anything against a mig29 if: he knows where you are, he's not stupid, and he wants you dead, no amount of skill is going to save you, unless the stars align for you.

It's a okay plane, that's for sure, but not in current meta. It could be much better if it got added around the same time as Tomcat. The thing that annoys me the most is the radar - TWS doesn't really work as intended, sometimes when i lock up someone flying straight at me and lock them again with PD Skyflash says fuck you and tells me that radar lock is required lol.

The way i end up using it is how you use the Lightning at 9.3, go in boom get 1 or 2 zoom out and then turn rinse and repeat.
are you indifferent to using the alternative ACM mode? the vertical scan can help you in 1v1 dogfights such as @ 9:13

It’s kinda the issue with interceptor aircraft, they can be good but not meta. There’s no bombers to intercept.
They can fight fighters but are designed to take out bombers and attackers. Since you don’t see them, you have to play fighter.

@@SS-2178 Italy did use the ADV, they leased 24 from the UK and kept them in service for 10 years before replacing them with the american F-16 ADFs while waiting for the Eurofighter to come.
Defyn are you able to revisit the Mirage-2000C by chance? Considering it’s still at 11.3 and is probably one of my favourite aircraft.

I dunno man, it's game play is almost identical to my FGR 2 game play. Fly around and throw missiles at people that aren't paying attention or don't know what a SARH missile is, then die when 1v1ed by any competent pilot. At least it has variable wing sweep and thrust reversal to play with?
I think the slow speed could be due to the fact it’s intakes(ram air scoops) aren’t modelled, the IDS variants brick wall at 1300kph because they don’t have them. But the F.3 should…In a nutshell it shouldn’t brick wall at 1300kph on the deck and keep accelerating.
I've honestly been having a great time in the F.3, 16v16 battles mean you rarely get into dogfights that you'd rather not deal with, you have so many teammates to cover you that you can generally pick your battles.

It's possible to do the same as other planes (but harder) because it has the radar and IR missiles, you can press buttons, when the enemy forgets that you win. That's war thunder

The tornado f3 feels quite strong imo in the initial furbal. You have plenty of missiles to spam and they have good range and all aspect. However if you don't make a big enough impact in the early game it becomes almost impossible to win in the later stages. If the enemy is aware of your presence and not dumb enough to eat a skyflash to the face the tornado is screwed. As Defyn rightfully put it, you don't only have to play your cards right, the enemy also has to make mistake in order to lose a dogdight. Thankfully there is no shortage of players who make mistakes. I've managed to energy trap plenty of 11.3 and below aircraft that decided to rate fight me. Sadly against 12.0 aircraft, which currently is more than 90% of the matches the tornado gets, you stand zero chance. Even if they make multiple crucial mistakes, they outperform you so massiviley that there is no reason to even bother fighting them.

That depends entirely on what the enemy aircraft is actually doing. If they're flying straight then sure, you can just put the crosshair directly on them, but if they're turning then you need to adjust it in some way because the lead indicator can only take into account their current speed and direction, it can't tell the future.

For me it is a good plane. You have to know what you can do with it and above all choose the right place to be able to fly with guarantees of success.
I don't agree when you say that it is not useful for dogfights.
With it I have won dogfights at F14, mig 23 and F4. Although the pilots of said planes may not have been very good at playing, but there are the victories against those planes. I don't pretend to look like a top pilot, I'm average.
For now with this plane, after more than 100 games, I have shot down three times as many planes as I have been shot down, so in conclusion, it is a great plane in its BR.

I still think that tornado in general has wrong flight model. No matter what version you play it's a flying brick, even if you want to use a ground strike version in combined battles it takes ages to turn around at altitude where you wanna use GBUs, and it doesn't seem to matter if you use manual wing sweep or not.

I'm grinding for this thing rn and now I really wish I wasn't lol it feels like the best thing at the top of the British tech tree is just the Harrier. I personally hate the phantoms despite owning the F4J-UK like an absolute moron. I hope that when they eventually add ARM missiles or such that we get the Tornado GR4 with ARM missiles and also Brimstones. I would also love the Avro Vulcan
But honestly I just wish Gaijin would buff the fuck out of the tornados. They all need to outrun nearly everything because if they are going to suck them so hard with the flight model at least make them fast

I'm both relieved and annoyed at that wing rip. It means that even much better pilots than me can tunnel vision and forget to sweep them back. It also means the problem will probably not go away soon.

It’s much worse if you use manual wing sweep, you get warning-less wing rips quite often in turns. Using manual helps eke out the last little bit of manoeuvrability in the plane though so if you just spend a little time in a test flight learning tolerances then it’s fine most of the time.
Dedicated interceptors sadly don't have a place in this game where matches are completely decided by air superiority fighters. Sadly why we will never see my favourite jet of all time, the MiG-25, in the game either, although the MiG-31 with R-33's could be at least somewhat useful as a counter to Phoenix spammers.
It being useful and it being added is fortunately (?) unrelated :)
Though I do think the 31 is much more likely just because it would be easier to make it powerful, even in an off-meta awkward missile bus kind of way.

I was skimming mig25 on wikipedia and it said the plane has 0.4 T/W... If that's truly the case then it will be even worse than tornado
@@angga2917 Could be, it's single purpose was to always fly above mach or preferably at mach 2 and lauch it's chonky big payload BVR missiles on everything and never ever get in a dogfight with anything. It's huge for a fighter and also heavy as hell so basically zero turnability and zero energy retention for fights. So it's basically never engane and always keep your speed up no matter what.
With that said i would love to fly it in WT just because of it's looks.

Unfortunately I don’t have top tier Britain but the tornado is one of my favorite aircraft and I have the German tech tree one but it’s pretty much useless in the game. I don’t think Germany will get this variant but I can sure hope for it.

Well I have same felling in my F104j, it is not bad, but playing it hurts my psychical health. I am not very good at aiming the cannon, getting beter but slowly. And when I end up fighting F14A, Mig 23 or Mig21 bis I feel like canonfoder. Even in 10.7 BR I need to tryhard. So Tornado F3 can be a welcome plane in my hangar.

Well... there some truth in that shit-talk, sadly. Top tier is often "no skill required, point and click" (where the more advanced "package" wins) and if u trying to be too tactical, the match ends before u start to "achieve" anything; either by 80% of your team dies by than, or there's only AI left to shoot at. That's why I actually like the large maps, gives players more "room" and opportunities.

I'm not trying to be pedantic with this: When you say "you can't turn around in time, if an enemy is on your 6 and closer than 6-7 km," I think what you mean is that 'you can't make that turn while maintaining speed.' Am I off base with that? or is this thing that much of a boat that it won't turn if you chop the throttle?
